would assist the City of Punta Gorda by forwarding recommendations on how to prolong
the dam's life.

Dr. Wilson, USGS, gave the Board members an update on Tropical River Groves which
now has 35 complete wells. No drilling has been done since November. He also dis-
cussed water levels on potentiometric surface maps and answered questions.

Mr. Twachtmann explained the Governing Board of the Southwest Florida Water
Management District will probably soon adopt a regulation which would permit the
District to declare certain areas "water use-caution" areas. Mr. Wines said Peace
River Basin should be the first area under the "water use-caution" designation.
Following a full discussion Mr. Gaskins made a motion recommending that the
Governing Board put Peace River Basin in the "water use-caution" area category. Mr.
Simmons seconded the motion and it passed.

Mr. Wines explained that last year the Charlotte County Tax Assessor failed to assess
the taxes for the Peace River Basin and was to double up this year, but again failed to
do so. The total amount due is $67,653 for the two years. Attorney Taub advised the
Board members they should take legal action to obtain the funds. Mr. Safron, Charlotte
County Attorney, stated he agreed with the Board that the debt was owed and would
recommend to the Board of County Commissioners to borrow the amount to pay the bill.
A full discussion followed. Mr. Wade then moved that a resolution be prepared, and
presented to the Governing Board for action, to require the fulfillment of the payment
by a set date prior to the next Basin Board meeting. Mr. Simmons seconded motion
and it passed.

Mr. Twachtmann announced the meeting for March 2, 1972 was.set to prepare a tenta-
tive budget for 1972-73. There being no further business, meeting adjourned at 5:00 p.m.
