Dear Derrill: rooksv\\\
I have been in touch with several members of the staff at
Brooksville concerning the proposed SgAvof the inter-
relationships of water levels on t Rid and in the
Peace Basin. It was my understand at this is being
funded from monies which were not expended during the past
fiscal year and that there is a time problem of approving
this in September so that the funding can be handled in this
I just wanted you to know that we are very pleased that this
project is being undertaken. Since I have not seen a copy
of the proposal, I am not in the position to discuss the
specific implications, but my discussions with numerous
individuals there suggests that this project does have an
opportunity to substantially further our understanding of
lake levels, surface water table levels, and Floridan
aquifer levels. If we could get a handle on these, we should
all be in a much better position to plan pumping activities
into the future so as to minimize any irreversible effects
on either lake levels or the Floridan aquifer.
My only concern was that the program be carried out with an
opportunity to maximize the information that is needed to
answer the most pressing problems which are currently present
in the study area. We have no desire to dictate how work
should be done, but we do feel because of our understanding
of the area and the concerns of individual property owners
that our input might well help to set the proposal up in such
a manner as to maximize usable results.
J. B. Butler has assured me that he wants a review at the time
that about $25,000 has been spent or probably around next
April and he would welcome the opportunity for me to review
the project at that time with him. He has also offered to
send me the final draft of the proposal when it has been

I am writing to specifically request that the adoption of
the proposal be handled in such a manner that there will
be some flexibility in the specific activities as well as
the scope of those activities as they are undertaken so
that there will be maximum flexibility in changing directions
if such is demonstrated to be desirable or necessary.
We would welcome the opportunity to work with the staff on
this. As noted above we are delighted that this project
will be undertaken.
At the present time I see no reason why we need to appear at
the board meeting and take up your time there. We would be
happy for this letter to be made a part of the record in
support of such a project.
Thanks for your continuing cooperation.
Best personal regards.
