cation Center (CREC)-Lake Alfred, FL; in cooperation

Center (AREC)-Fort Pierce; and with the Horticultural
Research Laboratory, United States Department of Agri-
culture-Orlando, FL.

Federal and State regulations set general and specific
standards that applicators must meet before they can use
restricted pesticides. The core manual entitled "Apply Pes-
ticides Properly A Guide for Pesticide Applicators,"
should be studied and followed by anyone using pesticides.

Products mentioned in this guide are subject to changing
EPA rules, regulations, and restrictions. Information pre-
sented is current at the date of publication.

Additional information regarding pests, their identifica-
tion biology, and management, as well as pesticide safety
and ground and aerial application may be found in IFAS
publication SP-14, Florida Citrus Integrated Pest and Crop
Management Handbook.

CAUTION: Growth regulators may cause serious problems if misused. Excessive rates, low volume applications,
improper timing, and fluctuating environmental conditions can result in phytotoxicity, crop loss, and/or erratic
results. Read label instructions carefully for precautions and additional information. Some formulations of 2,4-D are
highly volatile, and under certain environmental conditions may drift onto susceptible crops in surrounding areas.
Extensive damage can result with almost certain legal implications.

Lower rates are effective against certain seedling
annual weed species. Apply as needed to control
emerged weed growth. Repeated applications of
higher rates may be required to control some
perennial grass and vine species. Apply in active
stage of growth when grasses are about 18 inches
tall with enough top growth for good spray
interception. Perennial species, especially
grasses, are most susceptible at seedhead or early
bud stages. For perennial species, especially
vines, fall applications are usually most
effective.


Partial or total control of most weed species
following single or repeated applications. Has
no soil residual activity. Weeds germinating
after application will not be controlled.
Visible effects of herbicide on most annual
weeds occur in 2-4 days, but may not occur
for 7 days or more on many perennial species.
Extremely cool or cloudy weather may delay
visual effects. Do not apply when weeds are
growing under stress conditions such as
drought. When tank mixed with some residual
herbicides, Roundup loses some of its activity.
Such antagonism, more pronounced with
difficult-to-control perennial species, may be
overcome with increased rates of Roundup.
The activity of Roundup is enhanced when
applied in lower volumes provided adequate
coverage is achieved. Foliage should be
sprayed to wet, not runoff. Apply 20-80 GPA,
using higher volumes for more dense
vegetation. Low volume applications of 5-20
GPA using lower rates of 1-2 qts/acre will
provide control of annual broadleaf weeds
and grasses and burndown or partial control
of perennial species. Repeat applications will
usually be necessary. Application rates
required for flatwoods areas have been found
to be somewhat higher than those for the
"ridge" area. Roundup can be used at 8
