Mr. William F. Burke, 13:5 Frankford
Ave., Philadelphia, Pa.. writes:
"On the 19th of February, ltl, I was
taken with cramps that extended from
Just below my throat to the bottom of
my stomach. They were so severe that
my wife had to go for a doctor about two
o'clock in the morning.
"I had from February until July of
that year three doctors, and they were
giving me medicine for kidney, liver and
bladder troubles, and after taking all
kinds of their mixtures, in the month of
July I could neither eat nor drink. For
three weeks I had -not taken a morsel of
food except in a liquid form. At the
end of that time I could not drink milk
or water except in smzll sips, which
caused me great pain.
"I had given up all hope of living
more than a week or two at nliost. I
told my wife I thought I had catarrh of
the stomach. She seemed to think so
too, and having read of Peruna I decid-
id to give it a trial.
"-1 took several dose. that evening, and

THE PRiSeO CONGRESS IN SES-
SSION AT RICHMOND

GENERAL CONVENTION OF THE
DAUGHTERS OF THE
CONFEDERACY

The general convention of the Unit-
ed Daughters of the Confedleracy.
which was held in Atlanta last week.
was a very brilliant assemblage. Del-
egates were in attendance from Cal-
ifornia to Florida. and from Washing-
ton to New York. and some of the
most noted women of the south met
together in a splendid convention.
On Saturday morning, for nearly
two hours, the following questions en-
gaged the attention of the convention:
Shall northern women who are
wives of Confederate Veter.ins. or of
lineal descendants of veterans be ad-
mitted to membership in the 1. D. ('.?
The convention decidledl by an over-
whelming vote That thy'v should lhe
admlnitted; not, however, until a debate
hadi rage,,t. in the course of which the
,lel gaties grew almost uncontrollable.
Florida cast her volte against admit-
iin northern women as nimemlers of
he '. I). ('.
In speaking of this question ihe At-
lanta. Journal says:
"The ultimate action of the associa-
tion in refusing to exclude northern
wonmen from its ranks is considlereI
a most notable indication that th h bit-
erness of sectionalism has passed
away. Against such bitterness the 1'.
D). C. has spoken its loudest dlisap-
proval."
Other business before the conven-
tion Saturday was the completion of
reports on the Shiloh and the Arling-
ton monument funds. The erection
of these two mlemorials-the former
in connmmemoration of the fanimous )at-
tle of Shiloh and the latter of thle ('Con-
