SOURCE DOCUMENT ADVISORY

Digital images were created from printed source
documents that, in many cases, were photocopies of
original materials held elsewhere. The quality of
these copies was often poor. Digital images reflect
the poor quality of the source documents.

Where possible images have been manipulated to
make them as readable as possible. In many cases
such manipulation was not possible. Where
available, the originals photocopied for publication
have been digitized and have been added,
separately, to this collection.

Searchable text generated from the digital images,
subsequently, is also poor. The researcher is
advised not to rely solely upon text-search in this
collection.

FLORIDA VOLUNTEER MILITIA IN THE WAR WITH MEXICO, 1846-1848

Following the Declaration of War against the Republic of
Mexico, the federal government requested that Florida provide
five companies of infantry for national service during the war.
Eventually, all five Florida companies saw active service, three
in Mexico, the companies of Captains Kelly, Livingston and Clark,
and two at Fort Brooke, Tampa, the companies of Captains Johnson
and Fisher. The companies at Fort Brooke served sequentially;
many men from Captain Johnson's Company volunteered to serve in
Captain Fisher's Company following the de-mobilization of
Johnson's unit in January 1848. Captain Clark's Company was
eventually mustered into federal service as Company K, 13th U.S.
Infantry.

The compiled muster and service records reproduced herein
are on file with the National Archives and in the Archives of the
Florida Department of Military Affairs. However, for the purpose
of this publication, most of the material was derived from
Volumne XX, Florida Historical Quarterly, "Florida's Part in the
War with Mexico" by T. Frederick Davis.

In the following lists, the indicated age is that at the
time of the original muster; the home towns/counties are all in
Florida except as specially noted.
