SOURCE DOCUMENT ADVISORY

Digital images were created from printed source
documents that, in many cases, were photocopies of
original materials held elsewhere. The quality of
these copies was often poor. Digital images reflect
the poor quality of the source documents.

Where possible images have been manipulated to
make them as readable as possible. In many cases
such manipulation was not possible. Where
available, the originals photocopied for publication
have been digitized and have been added,
separately, to this collection.

Searchable text generated from the digital images,
subsequently, is also poor. The researcher is
advised not to rely solely upon text-search in this
collection.

Otl History of FNG (must be checked for accuray )(add dates & corce

From early days of Florida, the various communities maintained their own militia,
unorganized groups, which fought in the Mexicw.n & Indian W(ars, protected their communities
nnd participated in parades, social functions encampments. These groups of militia served
the State and their comnurnities until the Civil IWar, when all able bodied men either
Joined existing units of formed their own, and all served as an important part of the
Confederate forces. Immediately after the war the defeated Southemstates were not
permitted to form a militia, but when the law was relaxed groups of militia were organized
thruzut the State, many of them filled by men who had fought bravely thru the Civil War.

There are no records in the Adjutant General's Office of the militia prior to 1893; in
that year there were approximately 24 military groups already existing with many more to
be organized subsequently. These Florida units were organized into five separate battalions
as follow: 1stBn: Jacksonville-St.Aug area; 2ndBarLeesburg, Orlando & Sanford; 3rdcn:
Pensacola, 'LiveOak & iAppalachicola; 4thBn: Gainesyille,Starke,Palatka & Daytona; and the
5thBn: Tampn, Key1West, Titusville & Arcadia. The first summer encampment on record took
place at Camp Dunn, near Ocala in 1893; all five battalions attended, and such encampments
were held in various places each ear.

The war clouds of the Spanish-American War were'forming in 1898, and all units of the five
attalionsvolunteered for federal duty. The First Regiment of.Florida Volunteers was
organized 23 May 1898 from 20 companies of Florida State Troops and was mustered into federal

assemblede, in their respective armories for final muster into the service of the US on 5 Aug
191. The entire force of the 1i of Fla was taken into federa-Tservi-ce on 5 Aug 1917.
the.Coast Artillery, after.being federalized, was mobilized/at Fort Dade, Fla for instruc -
tiors. The 1st & 2nd Rgts of infantry, with Sanitary Troops attached, and the IstField
Hospital Co were mobilized at Camp Wheeler, GA for further preparation for active service.
The 1st Regt of Inf, after reaching Canp Wheeler, was disbanded; all officers & EM were
transferred, the personnel used thethe organization of new/units of machine gun battalions,
field artillery & infantry. The 2nd Regt was redesignated the 124th Inf in Sept of 1917
Assailed for France .rom Camp Mills, NY in Oct 1918, and the regiment disbanded upon reaching
France, where the men were used as replacement troops in the AEF.
.After the fist WIW the NG of Fla was reformed, but more on the order of a Federal NO, supported
largely by the Federal Goyt. The First Fla Inf was organized in 1919,1920 & 1921; in
Dec'1921 the First Florida Inf was redesign the 15hth Inf; and in May 1924 the 154th was
redesig:the 12tth Inf. This regiment, along with CA, FA & misc units, made up the FNG
during the period between the first and second world wars. During this period Federal aid
!to the NG was increased, with superior training and instruction provided by the army. It
was to an efficiently trained and alert Guard that the President again sent a call in 1940
for mobilization into federal service for 7fWtF.
(Here should be inserted all data pertaining to #s & performance f
during WII) t f t
Upon their release from federal service at the close of the 2nd'WW the FNG units underwent
a complete reorg..nisation. The FNG, the organic ed militia of the Ste is composed (1953) of
parts of two Infantry-Division, a Hq AAA Group, Two AAA Bns, a Fighter-Bomber sqdn, a TTruck
Co & a hq&hqDet. The majority of th-ese units carry the lineage and battle honours won$

"service the same day at Tampa; members of the other companies were mustered into federal :
service as part .f the newly formed ,nis.

Upon its relief from federal duty and service in the Spanish-American war the militia in
Florida was reorganized into the slt & wnd Florida'Infantry Regiments,,and served as such
until their entryinto ZWI. During this period were passed by the Congress of the US the
Dick Bill and the first National Defense Act, which, realizing the value of the militia as
the first line of Defense of this country, and a force for peace and suppression of law-
lessness in the states, granted to the NG the benefits of federal funds and regular army
instruction and training. The designation of Florida State Troops was .changed to the NG of
Florida on June 7th 1909.

With the approach of war again, the 2ndFlorida Infantry was called into federal service on
7 July 1916 for Metican Border service, while the 1st Florida Infantry was retained as
the 1st Separate Battalion.. This battalion and a detachment of sanitary troops were
mobilized and mustered into federal service, the several companies of this battalion were
distributed thruout the state at various points where their services were considered most
necessary for the guarding of bridges, railroad crossings, and public utilities of differ-
ent kinds. Upon their return from Mexican Border service the organization were returned to
their respective home 'stations, resuming the status & duties pertaining to State troops;
while the'1st Separate Battalion was combined with other new companies that had recently
been organized and all were consolidated, forming the 1st Florida Infantry Regiment,
and as such was taken into federal service forWIi.

Acting in accordance with the President's proclamation of July 3rd 1917, all organizations

'. 'T-'

during the 2nd war.

To sum up the history of the NO in Florida it is evident that the Guard has played a
tremendous part in the history of both the state and the county. From earliest times the
Guard has been a force for peace & lawfulness/ in the community, and has come to the defense
Sof the state and country in nine wars: the Mexican;and Florida Indian Wazg theCivil War,
the Spanish-American War, the War of the Mexican Border, WWs I & II, and the Korean
Emergency.

Pre world War II NATIONAL GUARD

I- -- -
On' january st, 1919, this State had no active Fede ally recognized National Guard.
Up to this time the Militia Bureau of the War Department had done very little towards
formulating plans for the recognition of the National Guard within the several States.
During the year, however, the provisions of'the National Defense Act of June 3rd, 1917,
were put into active play and the National Guard Regulations were published as, a guide
for organizing new units. Prior to June 30th, 1919, this State was authorized to organ-
ize one Battalion of Infantry. (Letter Militia Bureau dated April 23, 1919). This
authorization was later increased to two Battalions of Infantry and,two companies of
r Coast Artillery and eventually the same was increased to one complete Regiment of
-Infantry and two comp .nies of Coast Artillery. (Letter Militia Bureau dated October
2hth 1919). /
Under the above authority this State organized and presented for inspection for
Federal Recognition three companies of Ilfantry as follows:
Infantry Company, Daytona, June 21, 1919
Infantry Company, Miami, June 23, 1919
Infantry Company, Tampa, June 25, 1919
At this ti e this office had not received copies of NationalGuard Regulations governing
the organization of new units and consequently was not aware of the requirements of the
Militia Bureau for Recognition. As a result the-MilitiaBureau did not extend recognition
to date from the date of Federal Inspection, as 'follows:

Infantry Company, Daytona, Oct 15th 1919
Infantry Company, Miami, Oct 17th 1919
On December 31st this State had in process of organization several units which
.--should be completed in a-short while and, presented- for federal'recognition. It is the
i-plans of this office to inaugurate an active campaign to complete the Regiment to'
"the date of the annual encampment,,
