Surinam Reception of the 7'roops in that Colony -

H E exploring of foreign countries having of late C H A P.
years, and particularly fince the recent discoveries
of the immortal CAPTAIN COOK, fo generally been the
object of perfons both in private and public situations;
and the hiftories of their labours and purfuits being fo
interefting to the curiosity of the public, I have ventured
to offer fuch observations as I have had an opportunity
of making in a very singular part of the globe, on which
few Englifhmen have been thrown, either by .cc-i:

T1 i s Work being perhaps one of the mrof fingular
productions ever offered to the Public, I think it
right to give the Reader a fhort sketch of what he
is going to perufe.-I have endeavoured to arra.gec
matters in fome degree like a large garden, where
one meets with the fweet-fmelling flower and the
thorn, the gold-bcfpang!cd fly and loathfome rep-
tile, the richeft glowing plumage and the darkeft
shades; the whole fo variegated as to afford, I hope,
both infor:r:.'. :n and amusement, without racking or
depreffing the fpirits, and d;--..:,g- the mind; not
indeed in the modern pomp and brilliancy of ftyle,
but in a fimple tale, where TRUTH is the chief or-
nament.
