Ballet Nacional de Cuba

with Alicia Alonso
director, prima ballerina

June 19-July 8

Ballet Nacional de Cuba, with its magnificent corps de ballet and breathtaking
virtuoso soloists makes its second visit to this country only a year after its exciting
debut last summer. In addition to their unforgettable production of the full-length
classic Giselle, Ballet Nacional de Cuba brings back several works that produced
critical acclaim and standing ovations performance after performance: Canto Vital
with its dazzling display of pyrotechnical dancing, the exciting Carmen, the tender
Tarde en la Siesta, the light-hearted Paso-a-Tres and the enormous, intense power
and excitement of Blood Wedding.
Under Alicia Alonso's direction, the company has created a major new production of
the classic Swan Lake. It will have its United States Premiere here. Choreography for
this beautiful, full-length work has been done by Miss Alonso based on the original
by Petipa and Ivanov with decor by Julia Castanio.
Other works which are new to United States audiences include: the charming Cuban
version of La Fille Mal Gardee, Alberto Mendez' Rara Avis to music by Handel; a
beautiful pas de deux for Miss Alonso and Jorge Esquival, Remembrance, to music of
Tchaikovsky with choreography by Brian MacDonald; another pas de deux for the
same couple, Spartacus, a gorgeous love duet; and Night of the Guitar and El Giije,
two uniquely Cuban works sure to be among the most memorable in the
engagement.
