Havana
Sunday night July 6 1862

Eddie my boy Don't be jealous and I will talk awhile with you. I was
thinking today how I would like to take passage on the Columbia tomorrow
for home once more but the time now necessary to be here will hardly
allow me to go by the Columbia next trip but I shall now say go then -
I have in my room a curious shaped jug which I intend to carry home this
I keep agua cebada (barley water) sweetner and some kind of tart juice
put in and is a pleasant and nourishing drink I wish you all had some of
the nice drinks and beverages we have They make them from a great many
kinds of fruit and there is plenty of sugar You would not believe it
but in some parts of the Island great quantities of syrup and molasses
is thrown away for the want of apparatus to boil and purify it The cane
must be cut and the sooner it is ground the better and if it remains in
the juice long it will sour and forment There is one long store house here
full of sugar that would cover the ground a 4 blocks of houses in N.Y.
and one in fully as large just now a little girl came into iy
room to show me her cage of white mice and she talked all the Spanish
out of me I made up my mind I did not know half as much as I imagined
about Spanish Tell Ella I acknowledge the receipt of the Easter Egg
and hope to hear soon that she is well Tell her &f she will wear green
classes while in the house it would favor her eyes very much I see I
have Mr. Green Seven full sheets of paper and some dozen drawings
and statements Yesterday I deposited about 50 ounces of gold to buy a
draft for Mr. Green a gentleman has just come in to see me and I will
close so good by old fellow and remeirber me to all
from your rather
Hile
