By DELMILLIGAN THE LEDGERLAKE WALES Hardees Martha Valadez curled a free kick from 25 yards over the defense, the ball bouncing off the bottom of the top bar and back up into the net in the closing minute as the Lady Wildcats upset Sebring, 1-0, on Monday night in the FHSAAGirls Soccer District 11-3A Championship quarterfinals at Legion Field. Hardee, the tournaments lowest seed, held No. 3 seed Sebring to limited scoring opportunities. An injury-riddled team could be said to be limping into the playoffs. As far as the Lady Blue Streaks are concerned, they were virtually being brought into this tournament on a stretcher. Sebring (12-8-2) was already coming in short-handed, and that list was added to as Haylee Peters, the Lady Blue Streaks leading scorer with 22 goals in 19 matches, suffered a broken leg in the next-to-last regularseason match. And Marianna Becker, their top defender, gutted it out and played despite injuries from a recent car accident. Hardee, 6-14-1, will take on No. 2 seed Auburndale Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in the semifinals at Legion Field. Sebring forward Kiersten Waldron missed the Lady Blue Streaksbest scoring chance with 19 minutes left, not converting her kick from point blank range. Sebring goalkeeper Shannon Bloemsma saved a power kick on goal late in the first half, ending Hardees most serious threat before intermission. The Lady Blue Streaks turned up the offensive pressure with 20 minutes left to play, but Hardee was a stalwart on defense throughout. And so the snake-bitten, though strong season for Sebring came to an end, with this being the final match for seniors Becker, Jazmin Gomez, Alina San Miguel, Sarah Smith and Kelby Mahoney, whose leadership and perseverance through the year helped the young core take a step forward. And with the likes of Peterson, Bloemsma, Waldron, Scheele Grimes, Faith Wilson, Lacey Watson and Julia VanFleet expected back and at full strength next year, look for another strong season with perhaps another step taken. News-Sun Sports Editor Dan Hoehne contributed to this story By DAN HOEHNE daniel.hoehne@newssun.comSEBRING As the regular season for boys soccer winds down and eyes start looking ahead toward district tournaments, coaches are looking for intense battles that will stoke the competitive fires. Each game from her on is tournament preparation for us, Lake Placid head coach James Ashley said. And Sebring is always a battle. So the competitive aspect was met, and the result came up positive for the Dragons as well as they took a 3-1 win over the Blue Streaks on Firemens Field Monday night. ALake Placid goal by Yoyi Gomez midway through the first half, was called back due to an offsides penalty. While putting plenty of pressure on Sebrings defense, the Dragons were having a hard time finding the net in the first half. But that changed momentarily when, at the 13:34 mark, Carlos Santana scored on a volley from the top of the penalty box that sailed past diving Sebring goalie Brandon Bowyer. Lake Placid made the most of their team pressure as they worked the ball around to set up several scoring chances in the first half, but the Blue Streak defense held strong and kept it at just a 1-0 lead at intermission. The second half saw the tough, physical play continue as these long-standing rivals were giving it all the y had to get an edge. Lake Placid managed to score on a Danny Gil cross that bounced to the head of an oncoming Diego Mireles to double their lead. Minutes later, Yoyi Gom ez scored on a hard shot from distance giving the Dragons a 3-0 lead. But Sebring continued to battle throughout the entire second half and would stop Lake Placids scoring there The Streaks did find their tally when a freekick was News-Sun Wednesday, January 15, 2014 BSection Sports Courtesy pho to Sebring high school boys soccer coach, Keith Bowyer, along with Blue Streak soccer players, from left, Brandon Bowyer, Ben Parez, Jared Lang, and Jordan Hay were featured guests on Ed Lynchs Sports Talk show on Saturday, Jan. 11. Maybe its his new assist ants. Maybe its his new o ffensive scheme. Maybe its just a new y ear. After the programs w orst season since 1979, M uschamp made signific ant changes and not j ust to his staff. Muschamp introduced t hree new coaches Monday offensive coordinator K urt Roper, offensive line c oach Mike Summers and s pecial teams coordinator C oleman Hutzler and a nnounced plans to install a hurry-up offensive scheme that will include spread elements. We needed more tempo, we needed to create more snaps, we needed to create more space plays, said Muschamp, who grew increasingly frustrated with every loss last season. I felt like being in the gun would help some of our personnel, and thats where were headed. The Gators lost their final seven games in 2013, finished 4-8 and missed a bowl game for the first time since 1990. The offense was the primary problem, finishing 113th in the nation in total yards. Muschamp responded by firing offensive coordinator Brent Pease and offensive line coach Tim Davis less than 24 hours after the season ended. Special teams coordinator Jeff Choate resigned in December to take a similar position at Washington. Their replacements are tasked with helping Florida get back on track and in a hurry. Its unlikely that Muschamp, who is 21-16 in three seasons at Florida, will get more than a season to turn things around. So the Gators have to find some quick fixes to the offense, and going with an up-tempo scheme can be an equalizer. If you can create a bunch o f 1-on-1 tackle opportunities, t hen you have a chance to h ave positive yards, and posit ive yards keep you on the f ield. Our whole philosophy o n offense is points per game. I ts not yards. Its not going u p and down the field. Its h ow many points we can get. Florida hasnt been the s ame offensively since 2007 H eisman Trophy winner Tim T ebow left school. The Gators ranked 82nd in total offense in 2010, 105th in 2011 and 103rd in 2012. Some believe its a talent issue; others insist its a talent-development issue. Either way, Muschamp knows it has to improve. Philosophically, all Ive ever asked is to be balanced, Muschamp said. I feel like youve gotta be balanced in this league. Weve run the ball at times extremely well. ... We need to throw it better. Weve said that all along. The Gators were decimated by injuries last year, losing quarterback Jeff Driskel, running back Matt Jones, receiver Andre Debose and right tackle Chaz Green either before or early in the season. Driskel broke his right leg against Tennessee in September and should be ready for spring practice in March. Debose will be non-contact in spring while continuing to recover from reconstructive knee surgery. Green (torn labrum) should be full speed. Jones, meanwhile, might be sidelined a while with a completely torn meniscus in his left knee. With all the changes taking place, there are no guaranteed starters on the roster. Every positions open. Every position, Muschamp said. When you go 4-8, its all open. Continued from B1 Gators look to open up the offense

As for the Dragons (13-02, 6-0-2), theyve secured the top seed in the District 10-2Astandings and travel to Frostproof Tuesday to face the winner of the Avon Park, McKeel Academy match. I really want to get the district championship, because thats what its all about, Ashley said.
