BY MELISSA BELTZ e SunThe small, rural counties that encompass the Florida Heartland Regional Economic Development Initiative’s (FHREDI) 5,000-sqaure-mile region are the focus of some dramatic new changes in the economic development arena. Staying consistent with its mission of enhancing regional partnerships to support economic and tourism development, as well as supporting regional plans for broadband access, business expansion, retention, education, exporting and transportation, FHREDI has recently completed the construction of a broadband network spanning its six-county range and has plans to enhance the marketability of those six counties, plus the cities of Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay and Immakolee, to outside businesses. Gina Reynolds, CEO of FHREDI, paid a visit to the Clewiston City Commission and presented the organization’s current projects at their last regular meeting, held Monday, June 16 at Clewiston’s City Hall. FHREDI encompasses “Florida’s Heartland,” the six counties in southcentral Florida that include DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands and Okeechobee, as well as the cities of Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay in Palm Beach County and Immokalee in Collier County. Roughly 300,000 people live in Florida’s Heartland and as touted on FHREDI’s website, the region is a perfect location to move goods to the end consumer in Florida, the U.S. and around the world. FHREDI works to market, advocate and facilitate all things that could contribute to economic development in the area, said Reynolds in her presentation. Rural areas often face challenges that inhibit their growth, said Reynolds. To address such issues, FHREDI is currently working with Site Selection Group, a strategic location solutions company based out of Dallas, Texas, who will conduct a complete analysis of the FHREDI counties and cities to determine their marketability to new companies. Every business looking to move to a new region conducts an analysis of possible locations before making a decision. Those companies look at an area’s cost to do business, educational resources, available labor pool and the skill level of that pool, access to InterBY AMANDA RAMOS-GUY Special to e SunVivian Hunter, Director of Human Resources for the city of Belle Glade, presented members of the Relay for Life “Team PHIT 4 the Cure” with certi cates of appreciation at Monday’s commission meeting. Through various fundraisers like yard sales, a spaghetti luncheon, Biggest Loser competition, and payroll deductions the team was able to raise $4,586. “We did not meet our goal but we are still working on it,” said Barbara Spence, the Chairwoman for the team. For three consecutive years, the “Team PHIT 4 Life” has been the highest fundraising team. Bank of Belle Glade, Manny’s Meat Market, Houston Realty and Associates, and The Law Of ce of Glenn Torcivia were businesses that were recognized along with a host of individuals for their support in the team’s fundraising efforts. Mayor Steve Wilson thanked staff for their roles in making the fundraiser a success. “This shows the level of dedication of our staff,” he said. “This isn’t just a one day event; it takes weeks to plan and they are out there all day. Thank you for your hard work.” At the request of the mayor, city manager Lomax Harrelle reports that only ve streets remain to be paved, which began on Tuesday, June 17. Afterwards crews will begin painting the stripes on streets throughout the city. Mr. Harrelle informed the commission that staff is in the process of painting or replacing city dumpsters and trashcans and placing the city’s seal on them. Mayor Wilson instructed the city manager that in the future staff should immediately repaint when damage is noticed to help with the city’s beauti cation efforts. The city manager also reported that the sale of the 211 acres at the old prison site was schedule to appear before Governor Rick Scott on Tuesday, June 17. He also reported that the annexation of the remaining 783 acres is moving along and the he had supplied the last remaining documentation reNew Economic Development Initiatives for Fla.’s Rural CountiesFHREDI CEO, Gina Reynolds, presents strategies to enhance economic development and announces completion of new broadband network BG Leader Responds to Road Repair Funding Issue T J V. Hendry Regional Medical Center is adding affordable nancing options for patients through CarePayment, a leading national healthcare nance company. No application or credit check is needed for the nancing program that allows patients to pay off their balance over 25 months at 0.00 percent APR. "Patients facing rising medical expenses need a way to manage their medical costs. We don't want patients to delay treatment because they can't pay the entire bill immediately," said John Beltz, chief nancial of cer at Hendry Regional. "The CarePayment program is a great option for our patients who need time to pay their bills. The program does not add interest rate costs on top of an outstanding medical bill. There are no hidden fees." The CarePayment program is an open-end line of credit that features a 0.00 percent APR for the life of the account. CarePayment accounts are issued by WebBank of Salt Lake City, UT. Patients can manage their accounts in a variety of ways, including: automatic payments, mobile and online account access, and paper or electronic statements. And it's affordable: A $1,500 balance, for example, would require a payment of only $60 per month over 25 months. "Hendry Regional Medical Center has a heritage of serving the community, dating back to 1951. With CarePayment, the hospital now offers an affordable option for patients who are struggling nancially to pay for critical medical treatment," says Ann Garnier, CarePayment COO. Parting ThoughtsBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchI don’t know about you, but one of the constants in my life is time spent with God. I depend on time spent in prayer. I lean heavily on the belief that God loves me and that God responds in my life. After 12 years of Ministry in Clewiston, God has called Kathy and myself to ministry in Monticello, Florida. We love this town and the people in it. We have put down roots here and have our hearts invested in many meaningful relationships. But change is coming. As uncomfortable as change may be, it’s a fact of life. To live is to change. Change is inevitable in all of our lives. People and organizations which refuse to change and adjust to a rapidly changing world soon become extinct. I’m not suggesting that all change is good. Some change can be debilitating and even destructive. But change isn’t necessarily a bad thing. This is particularly true when it comes to a change of leadership. In the Bible, Moses had been the leader of the Israelites for forty years. Just as the Israelites were preparing to enter the land that God promised them, change happened. The change for the Israelites couldn’t have been more dramatic. Moses was dying, and Joshua had been commissioned to succeed Moses. That must have been quite a transition for the Israelites to make. But it was probably no more traumatic than the transition many churches have to make after a long pastorate. I’m sure there were Israelites who thought they were doomed because they no longer had Moses to lead them. But God cannot and will not be limited to using one person. If you don’t think so, read the book of Joshua. In some ways, Joshua was an even greater leader than Moses, because he led the Israelites into many victorious battles when they were hopelessly outnumbered. The scriptures clearly and consistently teach that God can use anyone (even you!) to accomplish God’s purposes. The same can be said about any change of leadership, including a change of pastors. They simply have to be open and willing to be used by God. I love the word of God in Joshua 1:9 for all of us experiencing change and transition in our lives: “Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid; don’t be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” With that promise, it’s time to pass the baton to others to pick up the race where I left off. And God has inspired others to start stepping up! Pastor Alan Koch (Faith Lutheran Church) has accepted the call to be the new president of the Clewiston Ministerial Association. Pastor Todd Buck (First Baptist Church) has expressed interest in taking my rotation in writing articles for The Clewiston News. Pastor Jeff Smith and his wife Tina are coming to pastor First United Methodist Church. God is good! And so, it’s time to say a heartfelt goodbye to everyone. But if you think about it, what does it really mean to say “Good-bye”? Centuries ago, English-speaking Christians parted saying, “God be with ye.” In time, it became “God be wi’ ye,” and nally, “Good-b’ye.” The coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost lls the phrase with the full power of its meaning. “Good-bye” truly af rms, “God IS with you.” So, God be with you! “And I pray that the sharing of your faith may promote the knowledge of all the good that is ours and what we have shared in Christ Jesus.” (Philemon 1:6) Let me close with one nal thought. Most of us already know how to live a successful and purposeful life. It’s just that sometimes we need reminding! My perspective on the key to a better life: Complain less, appreciate more. Whine less, laugh more. Talk less, listen more. Want less, give more. Hate less, love more. Scold less, praise more. Fear less, hope more. Trust God, be blessed!Community Christian EventsCLEWISTON — The Red Barn Gospel Sing will be held at the Community Christian Church during the summer months. Mayor Wilson and Mr. Harrelle surprised the commission with news that county is spending $650,000 this year and another $350,000 on the Bill Bailey Gym, in addition to the $1 million spent last year. The county is also committing to helping the program on a yearly basis. After its completion, the county will deed the building over to the city of Belle Glade at the commission’s approval. “We are trying to increase the recreation program,” said the mayor. “Not only are we going to open the gym but the gym will belong to us.” Gary Blake, Youth Violence and Prevention Manager for the Youth Empowerment Center, reported to the commission that in the month of May 30 students participated in the program. He also stated that the group had attended the National Preventing Crime in the Black Community conference and was a success. Mr. Blake addressed the mayor’s concern of the youth’s behavior stating that they were “very well behaved”. Lieutenant Edward Luty announced that the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Of ce will be holding their NBA Basketball Camp beginning Monday, June 23, at Glades Central High School. Mayor Wilson thanked PBSO, the NBA stars, and the Howard E. Hill Foundation for sponsoring the week-long camp for the city’s youth. “I have to say that they’re [H.E. Hill Foundation] really stepping up to the plate,” he said. “Any time you’re talk about helping the kids, they’re there writing out the checks and I appreciate that.” Lt. Luty states that 200 children are expected to attend the event. Commissioner Johnny Burroughs responded to the concern Pahokee commissioner raised at their last commission meeting about the allocation of the $1 million from the state for road construction. He explained that a few months ago he had addressed the commission on “patching old wounds among the cities” and has since been visiting the sister cities’ meeting. He stated that Rep. Kevin Rader has been very good to the Glades in keeping them informed as to what is happening on the state level and visiting the cities. He thought this was a “good thing” and was surprised to see that when Rep. Rader made the announcement as to the allocation of funds both cities voiced dismay as to how the funds were divided among the cities. He explained that he has been working to get the sister cities to come alongside each other to maximize what they are able to do for the Glades as a whole. “It was disturbing to know that here we are busting our chops to ensure that all three cities are receiving something,” he said. “Only to hear that when you do receive good news someone is ranting about ‘why wasn’t it split this way ‘ or ‘why wasn’t it split that way’,” he continued, referring to the disagreement over the state disbursing the funds based on population. Commissioner Burroughs further explained that the tri-cities are eligible to apply for funding through the Rural Areas of Critical and Economic Concern (RACEC), a $9 million line item that has been placed in the state’s budget as a result of the request for the $1 million for road repair. “Things are coming down the pipe for us; not only for us, but for South Bay and Pahokee too,” he said. Mayor Wilson agreed and stated that because it’s only $9 million and ve cities that the city managers of the sister-cities needed to nd a way to work with each other to “ensure that we are not hurting ourselves,” his said. A workshop will be held on June 23 at 5:15 p.m.; city of cials will tour various areas of the city to access the resident’s concern of the parking of buses/trucks and the progress of cleanup efforts. On July 7 at 5:15 p.m., the commission will hold a workshop to discuss their ndings of the tour. ROADSContinued From Page 1 net and access to utilities, such as water, sewer and gas, said Reynolds. Reynolds said the Heartland region’s strong point is its cost of doing business, which is much lower compared to larger cities in the state. Site Selection Group is currently working on its regional analysis, which should be completed by the end of the summer, said Reynolds. As part of their analysis, Site Selection contacted local Economic Development Councils, asking them to provide the same information they would provide a business that was looking to locate to the area. They are also conducting community tours, employee interviews and are looking at the local real estate market and its available properties. When the analysis is completed, Site Selection will provide FHREDI with both regional and county reports, then they will come up with a marketing plan for the FHREDI region. At the end of her presentation, Reynolds said one of the most important aspects of economic development is an area’s educational resources. Competent employees, she said, are a huge factor in economic development and FHREDI is working with the Florida Department of Education, as well as local school boards, to ensure the Heartland excels in the education eld. Of cials received Reynolds’ presentation with enthusiasism, and said they want to be at the table when any decisions are made. Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have not moved in the past week, averaging $3.56/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 8,237 gas outlets in Florida. This compares with the national average that has increased 1.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.65/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. “The national average has stayed relatively at for the last month, but that appears to be over, as the escalating situation in Iraq takes hold and drives crude oil and retail gasoline prices higher,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “Motorists in some areas of the country have already seen slight price increases, and although the situation is still in its early stages, motorists should be ready for higher gasoline prices if the situation in Iraq threatens the ability of Iraq to export crude oil. While the U.S. only receives about 300,000 barrels of Iraqi crude per day, the concern is about the other 3 million or so barrels per day that Iraq pumps, which could be at risk of disruption. It’s that perceived threat that may cause the national average this week to rise 3-6 cents per gallon. The bigger picture here is that the timing of the situation in Iraq could threaten the possibility that motorists see lower prices this summer, as we had anticipated in our much earlier forecasts,” DeHaan said. 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee June 19, 2014 The January murder of a Moore Haven man has prompted an increase in the reward in hopes of nding his killer. Mario Hughes, a 31-yearold U.S. Army Veteran and active army reservist was murdered at his home on East Park Avenue SE in Moore haven shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31. Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, the Glades County Sheriff's Of ce and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement announced an increase in the reward Thursday, June 6, to $12,000 to encourage someone to step forward and provide information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of his killer. Crime Stoppers is offering $1,000, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is offering $1,000 and an anonymous donor has added $10,000 to the reward fund. "We would hope rst and foremost that someone would come forward and provide detectives with information because it's simply the right thing to do. Mario Hughes served our country honorably, and for someone to take his life in such a violent manner is intolerable," said Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers coordinator. "Justice needs to be served for Mario's family and the Moore Haven community." Hughes was born in El Salvador, but grew up in Moore Haven and graduated from Moore Haven High School in 2000. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army, served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves until his passing. THE GLADES INITIATIVESummer Break Spots or the Summer Food Service Programs are federally funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is state-administered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Children need healthy food all year long in order to grow and learn. During the school year, many children receive free and reduced-priced meals through the School Breakfast and Lunch Programs. When school lets out for the summer, many of these children are at risk of hunger or poor nutrition. This program is designed to ensure that children have access to the nutritious meals they need to grow, learn and play during the summer months and to help ensure their bodies and minds are healthy and strong for the upcoming school year. There is no cost for meals. USDA requires that meals be served at no charge to the children. However, the site may have a fee set for the activity program they provide. At almost all sites, there is no application necessary and any child 18 or younger can simply come during meal times to receive a meal. However, it is suggested that parents call the site ahead of time to let them know their child may be coming during meal time. Some sites ask that an adult or responsible teen accompany children during the meal time because they don't have staff to handle extra children that may not be a part of their regular activity program. Exception: A few sites (like overnight camps and sites in higher income areas) do require that parents ll out a form about family income in order for children to receive meals.LocationsWeed and Seed 227 SW 6th St. Belle Glade Lunch, 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Afternoon snack 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Contact: Gary Blake, 561-993-5402 Days: M, Tu, W, Th, F June 9 to Aug. 15 Belle Glade Life Center 400 W. Their breeding range extends as far south as Panama, Belize and the Bahamas. These medium-sized birds are about a third larger and have a longer bill than the Downy Woodpecker. Hairy Woodpeckers have stiff, long tail feathers that they use to lean against tree trunks. Their bill is nearly the same length as their head and their black wings are checkered with white. The fairly square head has two white stripes. Males have a ash of red towards the back of the head. A white patch runs down the center of their black back. The oldest known Hairy Woodpecker lived to be 15 years and 11 months old. The most common call of the Hairy Woodpecker is a short, sharp "peek." They also make a rattle or whinny sound. Hairy Woodpeckers live in mature forests where there are medium to large trees. They can be found foraging in woodlots, parks, forest edges, open woodlands, recently burned forests and strands of trees infested by bark beetles. Up to 80 percent of their diet consists of insects with the remaining 20 percent consisting of fruit and seeds. In Florida, the nesting season for this species is from April to June. Both sexes of the breeding pair work together excavating the nest cavity located in the dead stub of a living tree, a fence post or living cypress. The cavity entrance is about twoinches tall and 1.5-inches wide. The nest cavity is eightto 12-inches deep and it typically bare except for a bed of wood chips. Three to four white eggs are laid and incubated for 11 to 12 days. The young edge when they are about three weeks old. Both parents continue to care for the young for several more weeks.
