BY JOSE ROMERO Special to e SunSpring training has been good to the Clewiston Tigers, who routed the Raiders in last Thursday’s spring game. Despite a rocky start, the Tigers quickly recovered after the Raiders’ Johnathan Istache scored a touchdown not even a minute and a half into the rst quarter. Immediately following the touchdown, the Raiders went for a two-point conversion -an ambitious move, and one that was stomped out quickly by the Tigers. It only snowballed from there and the Raiders missed their cues each time they had the ball. Passes were blocked, drives were stopped short, turnovers were forced. The Raiders were feeling the pressure. On the offensive, the Tigers displayed that same ferocity that got them far last season. Every chance they got, the Tigers made a beeline for the end zone. Lenorris Gaines made the rst Tiger touchdown of the night, deftly catching a pass from Davis Witt with 4:52 left in the rst quarter. Tyrone Washington followed soon after, rushing past the Raiders’ defense to a touchdown with 1:30 left in the quarter. Both were followed by successful kicks, leaving the score 14-6 by the end of the quarter. The game continued in much the same way for the rest of the half. Glades Central tried again and again to score, but could not overcome the Tigers’ defense. The ball was turned over in various ways. Whether they tried to cut their losses with a eld goal, or were just forced to punt, the Raiders found it harder to score, much less hang onto the ball. The Tigers were much more fortunate. Despite feeling some resistance from the Raiders’ defense, they pushed through and kept scoring throughout the night. Gaines again picked off a pass for a touchdown in the second quarter, and after the extra point, the score was 21-6 at halftime. Once the second half got going, the Tigers wasted no time in trying to further their lead. Another Tiger touchdown was made about two minutes into the third quarter, thanks again to Tyrone Washington’s running the ball. Another successful kick followed, and the score was 28-6. After some more turnovers and well-executed plays by the Tigers (including an interception by Maurice Murphy), Darius Jackson continued the Tigers’ domination out on the eld, catching a 33-yard pass for a touchdown. The point after touchdown (PAT) was no good, leaving the score at 34-6. Many teams would have been discouraged by such a gap in points, but as the fourth BY MELISSA BELTZ e Sun“Do you have what it takes to survive a month in poverty?” That is the question Palm Beach County Community Action is asking organizations in the Glades area. To foster compassion, empathy and patience from the business and social services organizations in The Glades, Community Action is conducting a COPE simulation, or Cost of Poverty Experience, at West Technical Education Center in Belle Glade on Friday, June 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the simulation, employees of area businesses and organizations will face different life situations through the eyes of someone who is in a situation of poverty – whether they were born into poverty or fell into poverty due to job loss or another situational factor. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District has announced restrictions on lock operations on the Okeechobee Waterway due to falling water levels on Lake Okeechobee. Effective Thursday, June 5, locking operations at the W.P. Franklin Lock & Dam near Fort Myers and the St. Lucie Lock & Dam near Stuart will be conducted every two hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. This action is the result of the water level at Lake Okeechobee falling below 12.5 feet. “This is standard operating procedure whenever the lake falls below 12.5 feet” said Steve Dunham, Chief of the Corps’ South Florida Operations Of ce. “We encourage boaters to be aware of the lake level and consider that drafts will continue to decrease if the lake drops more in coming weeks.” The updated schedule means that lockages will occur at Franklin and St. Lucie at 7 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. Operations at the other three locks, Ortona, Moore Haven, and Port Mayaca, will continue on demand between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Should the lake drop below 11.5 feet, additional reductions in service will be necessary. A Notice to Navigation has been issued on this subject. A ‘Dear John’ Letter Worth SharingBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchIs there any son or daughter in this world who is not thrilled by the declaration of, “I’m proud of you,” from a parent?” I know how it was for me. Few things in my life have ever touched me as much as the words my dad shared with me in the rst letter I ever received from him. In many ways, it helped bring the “Prodigal” back home. My dad is gone now, but the blessing of that letter lives on. It’s a 28-year-old “Dear John” letter worth sharing. “Dear John: Your mother and I have been asked by Mike Oliver to write you a letter in support of your planned “Walk to Emmaus” in January. It is supposed to be an opportunity for us to express our appreciation of you and what our relationship means and has meant over the years. “When you were little, I had the same close relationship with you that I had with the other boys, and I realize now that when you were in junior high, I let you down by not being as involved with you in your activities as I was with the other boys. I also did not understand your sensitivity to other people at that time, and when you came home with a peace symbol, I never gave you an opportunity to state a position. I had my mind made up, and did not care to be confused by the facts. I was critical of your friends, and thus alienated you and never really re-established a close bond with you. I regret that now, and if I had the opportunity to re-run that part of the race, I would move up to scouts when you did, to try to gain back the son that I had ‘lost’ with a few hasty words. “You are in the correct eld. From the time you were in senior high, I began to see the potential, and it really came out while you were in college. I felt that ministry was where you belonged, but I was not the one to whom you came for advice in those days. I will admit that I was quite pleased when you nally made the decision to enter the ministry, and I am very proud of you and your accomplishment in dedicating yourself to a life of service to others. You will never know the sense of pride we felt at your ordination. Your mother stood and walked alone for the rst time after the accident, and held her head high the whole way down the aisle. That event inspired her to do what very few believed could be done. “Your accomplishments in school, in scouts, and now as a person, have been sources of pride to us which you will recognize when you have children of your own. The greatest gift any parent can receive is to have a child do well, and the highest feelings of ecstasy are realized in the accomplishments of your offspring. When you do well, we glory. “Keep up your good works, son, and hold the hand of Him whom you have vowed to follow. Your earthly parents love you very much, and are very proud of you. Your Heavenly Father must be even more so. Love, Dad.” I hope each of you parents is smart enough to tell your children how proud you are of them. But not just parents -grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, coaches, friends, neighbors and everyone else! Just as God said to Jesus, “You are my beloved son. With you I am well pleased,” so we also need to let the young ones who are entrusted to our care know that we are pleased with them -pleased for the kind of young men and young women they are becoming, and pleased that God has brought them our way. Father’s Day is approaching. Fathers, why not write a letter of blessing to your child? It can change a life. It did mine. 3 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee June 5, 2014 “The simulation gives a birds-eye-view of what poverty looks like,” said Trenesia Rozier, outreach coordinator for Bridges at Belle Glade. “It’s putting [employees] in the place of the individuals who seek services from them.” The simulation will bring together employees from banks, grocery stores, the Department of Children and Families, unemployment of ces and other businesses and organizations who interact on a daily basis with people who are in a situation of poverty, in an attempt to put those employees in the other’s poverty stricken shoes. “People from those agencies will play the role of clients seeking services,” said Rozier, “It gives businesses a look at their own attitudes which might create a disconnect with people of poverty and discourage those people from seeking the services.” Rozier said the simulation is not meant to “point the nger at anyone,” but to make businesses and organizations aware of how their day-to-day attitudes can affect the lives of people of poverty, including the services that they can access. To explain how an employee’s attitude can affect a person of poverty, Rozier gave the example of an employee working at a social services organization who was having a particularly bad day. That employee’s bad day may cause him not to disclose all the services that a client is quali ed for, said Rozier, therefore, hindering the client’s ability to utilize services they could otherwise bene t from. Though it can sometimes be dif cult to separate an employee’s mood from their performance, the poverty simulation reverses the roles of service seeker and service provider with the goal of cultivating empathy and understanding. “The simulation puts them in the place of the individuals who seek services from them. They see what [a person of poverty] has to face when they go to the grocery store or wait in line at the health department,” said Rozier. The simulation even puts participants in the role of convicted felons trying to seek jobs with a record, with some actors playing the role of parole of cer and probation of cer. According to Community Action, which will be facilitating the simulation, Friday’s production is an “effort to change the face of poverty, one family at a time.” For more information about the organization, visit http://www.pbcgov. com/communityservices/programs/communityaction/. TO ACCOMPLISH GREAT THINGS, WE MUST NOT ONLY ACT, BUT ALSO DREAM; NOT ONLY PLAN, BUT ALSO BELIEVE. ANATOLE FRANCE quarter began, the Raiders seemed to have gotten a second wind. Most notably, Jamarius Way was able to blaze past the Tigers’ defense for a 67-yard touchdown after only 15 seconds of play. Again, their attempts at an extra point were thwarted, leaving the score 34-12. The Tigers wasted no time in responding. They, too, rushed towards the end zone with a newfound passion. Tyrin Summers was stopped just 7 yards shy of a touchdown after carrying the ball for 44 yards. Kyree Marshall went on to score the touchdown, and after the extra point, the Tigers were up, 41-12. The Raiders’ newfound energy was admirable, but was ultimately a case of “too little, too late.” They managed to score again, thanks to Rodrick Martin, but that was not nearly enough to level the playing eld. Final score was 41-18. Head coach for the Tigers, Pete Walker, was pleased with his team’s performance last Thursday. “We executed well [that night], especially for a spring game. It was a great team effort -we kept the pressure on the quarterback, created turnovers, and I’m glad we got to play and evaluate a lot of the new players.” Wellington 16, Pahokee 7: D.J. Hickman recorded a kickoff return for a touchdown, which accounted for Pahokee’s only score of the game at Anquan Boldin Stadium. Demetrius McFadden led the Blue Devils defense with an interception in his team’s May 30 spring football game against the Wolverines.
