BY MELISSA BELTZ e SunIt was hard for the faculty and staff of the Everglades Research and Education Center in Belle Glade to recognize Dr. Victor Guzman’s retirement in 1987, mainly because Dr. Guzman still returned every day to occupy his secondoor of ce and to conduct research on leafy vegetables in the eld. Those same faculty and staff, however, were able to formally recognize Dr. Guzman’s dedication to his work when a celebratory luncheon was held to honor his 100th birthday on May 16. The birthday celebration was held on the main oor of the research center, and saw dozens of friends, family, co-workers and mentees gathering to honor Dr. Guzman’s six-decade commitment to the vegetable industry. Dr. Guzman rst came to the Everglades Research Center in 1952, working on chemical weed control in sugarcane and vegetable crops. During his career, Dr. Guzman worked in many different capacities at the cenBY MELISSA BELTZ e SunThe Glades Area Ministerial Association is hosting the Stop the Violence Prayer Walk this Saturday, May 24 beginning at 10 a.m. in Belle Glade. The walk will start at the Belle Glade Plaza, located on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and will continue to the loading ramp. The walk is expected to nish at 1 p.m. The Stop the Violence Prayer Walk is intended to bring the community together under one common cause: to “spread the message of love and peace amongst our community.” “The purpose of the march is to pray over our city and to ask God’s help in changing the hearts of those individuals who are involved in the crime and violence in our community,” said Pastor Robert Rease, of Belle Glade’s St. John First Missionary Baptist Church and member of the Glades Ministerial Association. “We want to cover our city in prayer and ask for God’s help.” Pastor Rease said the organizers are hoping for at least 400 people to come out on Saturday to march. And for those who cannot march, Pastor Rease said they will be going to “hot spots” in the community, where the most violence occurs, to pray over those areas. The march is being sponsored by the Glades Area Ministerial Association and other community organizations, including the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Of ce, the city of Belle Glade, Bridges at Belle Glade, the Light House Cafe and the American Red Cross. Yet another shooting has rocked the Glades area, according to information released by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Of ce. In this latest episode, three men were injured during a Sunday shooting incident in Belle Glade. The shooting happened at the loading ramp in Belle Glade, an empty block of property between Southwest Fifth Street and Southwest Sixth Street where local residents congregate, sometimes in large numbers. According to Eric Davis, spokesperson for the sheriff’s of ce, the men received non-life threatening injuries. One man was airlifted to Delray Medical Center via TraumaHawk. And in a development that demonstrates how dif cult it may be for the sheriff’s of ce to nd the shooting suspect, none of the three victims 36 month lease with approved credit through Ford Credit. $0 security deposit. Dr. Guzman found a niche working with lettuce and other leafy vegetables, helping him gain the title, “Lettuce King,” by area growers. Dr. Guzman has bred thousands of different lettuce variety, several of which have become a staple in the mainstream market. Numerous faculty members and area growers, who worked with Dr. Guzman during his tenure and beyond, stood before the audience at the luncheon to recognize his contribution to the vegetable industry. Norman Harrison, a retired IT specialist, recalled working with Dr. Guzman out in the lettuce elds. According to Harrison, Dr. Guzman could look at a head of lettuce and know exactly which parent genes created that head. “I learned a lot about lettuce and crops. A lot of my lunches were comprised of tasting his different varieties,” said Harrison, who said he had never eaten so much salad in his life until he went out into the eld to taste Dr. Guzman’s lettuce. Richard Raid, professor of plant pathology at the center, compared Dr. Guzman to Gen. George Patton. “Dr. Guzman was not as bold and brash [as Gen. Patton], but he was as patriotic and unyielding. He could yield a lettuce knife like the best of them. He was task master who led by example, and he got down and dirty with his troops and earned their respect because of it,” said Raid. “He’s 100 years old, strong, proud and possessing tremendous heart. Dr. Guzman, we salute you.” Paul Orsenigo, of Orsenigo Farms, said Dr. Guzman always wanted to know what growers thought and was never offended when they told him a variety would never work. Rick Roth, of Roth Farms, said there were no words to express the work of Dr. Guzman and his years of dedication to the region and Belle Glade. Certainly, Dr. Guzman has contributed to the success of the Everglades Agricultural Area, particular in Belle Glade. In fact, Roth said that farmers would not be farming this area without the Research Center, and without the work of researchers like Dr. Guzman. Before the luncheon concluded, Dr. Guzman rose easily from his chair and thanked his guests for being there. “I’m lucky to be here, and lucky to have all of you here,” said Dr. Guzman, who continued with a story of his getting to the Glades. “Dr. Fein eld in Gainesville, he said to me, ‘Go to the Glades and solve the problems of the farmers.’” Shortly after his arrival, Dr. Guzman helped farmers at Duda grow bigger and better celery by eliminating a technique called, scratching. “Duda adopted the system right away. All the farmers in this area are hard workers, very intelligent and tied to doing the best they can for their crops and to remain competitive among themselves,” said Dr. Guzman, who nished his speech by saying, “I am lucky and I stay lucky. I don’t think I’d do anything differently than what I did. So lucky me. Thank you all for coming.” 100Continued From Page 1 PHOTO / JOSE ZARAGOZA were cooperating with investigators regarding the shooter or his possible motive. The three men who were injured were later identi ed to be Von Smith, 24, Freddie Smith, 55, and Eddie Drummer, 48. The sheriff’s of ce has released a description of the suspect, who is believed to be a black male, approximately 5’10”, 155 pounds, who may have been wearing a black hoodie at the time. The investigation is ongoing and investigators urge witnesses with information about the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800458-TIPS. Callers can choose to remain anonymous. The Blessings of Love BugsBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchLove bug blessings. That’s an oxymoron if I ever heard one. Like jumbo shrimp or good grief, the words seem contradictory to each other. Some blessings are easy to acknowledge. For instance, I feel blessed with the sacri ces and freedoms we have received from those who have served or are serving in the armed forces. That makes sense. It’s right and proper. I celebrate that we are honoring them this weekend. But I have trouble celebrating and nding blessings in the love bug explosion that invaded us these last couple of weeks. Love bugs are not what comes to mind when I count my many blessings and name them one by one. But we are told in the Scriptures to give God thanks for everything, so I began wracking my brain for love bug blessings. I found that there are some blessings if you look hard enough. First, love bugs don’t bite. Praise God for that! Other blessings: Love bugs encourage me to wash my truck more often. Love bugs bring all of us together with a common nemesis. Love bugs increase on-the-road comradeship: “If I convoy behind that truck, it will take out most of the love bugs.” Love bugs increase my prayer life (Good Lord, where did all these love bugs come from?) Love bugs help me deal with statistics (with all of these hundreds of thousands of love bugs being smashed, surely there will be less in the future!) Love bugs only live three to four days, less if they y near a road. Love bug season helps us appreciate even more the 10-plus months when we don’t have to deal with them. In my search for love bug blessings, I was reminded of the story of Granny G, who never said anything bad about anyone or anything. Several guys decided to tease her and challenged, “Granny, what do you have to say about the devil?” Granny answered, “That rascal certainly gets around!” Attitude can make a world of difference in how we respond to the daily challenges we encounter, and we can always nd some positive sin the negatives we come across – even love bugs! That’s a life lesson worth embracing. Having said all this, there is still a part of me that wants to ask, “Noah, why couldn’t you have swatted those mosquitoes and squashed those love bugs?”First Methodist Time ChangeCLEWISTON — First United Methodist Church has changed their Sunday worship to one combined worship service at 10 a.m. each Sunday. Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 22, 2014 4 RELIGION NEWS AND INFORMATIONATTITUDE CAN MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE IN HOW WE RESPOND TO THE DAILY CHALLENGES WE ENCOUNTER...JOHN HICKS Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have fallen 2.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.62/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 8,237 gas outlets in Florida. This compares with the national average that has not moved in the last week to $3.62/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 16.9 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 12.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has not moved during the last month and stands 5.0 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. “The drop that we had observed in the national average weeks ago took a pause over the last week,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “Oil prices have perked back up, and some supply tightness across areas of the country helped propel wholesale gasoline prices higher last week, leading retail prices to hold steady instead of continuing to decline. The temporary stability in the national average will ebb over the next week or two, and gas prices will head down again as we approach Memorial Day,” DeHaan said. The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board is recognizing May 18–24, 2014, as Water Reuse Week to promote the bene ts of using reclaimed water as part of a continuing effort to protect regional water supplies. “Reusing water is essential throughout the state in protecting Florida’s water resources,” said SFWMD Executive Director Blake Guillory, P.E., who also is on the board of directors for the national Water Reuse Association. “Reuse technologies are continually improving, and as a result, we’re seeing an increase in customized industrial applications—especially as Florida’s economy also continues to improve.” Reclaimed water projects ease demand on traditional sources of water and reduce discharges into the ocean. Florida leads the nation in water reuse. Within the District’s 16-county region, more than 100 reuse systems produce and reuse 266 million gallons of reclaimed water per day. Water reuse involves treating domestic wastewater and using the resulting high-quality reclaimed water for a bene cial purpose. Extensive treatment and disinfection ensure that public health and environmental quality are protected. Reclaimed water can be used for many purposes, including: Irrigation of golf courses, parks, residential properties, highway medians and other green space Aesthetic landscape features, such as decorative lakes, ponds and fountains Agricultural irrigation Environmental restoration and wetland creation Groundwater recharge Industrial uses, including equipment wash down, processing water and cooling water Communities that reuse water are able to grow in size while minimizing or even reducing their impact on the water resources they depend on. In addition, use of reclaimed water allows communities to postpone or minimize their capital investments in developing new, more costly water sources and supplies. Further, reclaimed water is exempt from SFWMD landscape irrigation restrictions. The SFWMD, along with local governments and organizations throughout the state, recognizes Water Reuse Week each year during the third full week of May, just as the dry season comes to an end. HEALTH CARE DISTRICT OF PBCLakeside Medical Center was proud to host U.S. Representative Alcee L. Hastings on May 15 for a visit and tour of Palm Beach County’s only public hospital. During his visit at the 70-bed, allprivate room facility, the Congressman met with the hospital’s leadership, including Angela K. Pope, a volunteer member of the Glades Rural Area Support Board which oversees the hospital, as well as staff to discuss the hospital’s role as a teaching hospital and safety net provider in the region. Congressman Hastings’ congressional district includes the rural, western area of Palm Beach County known as the Glades, the communities served by Lakeside Medical Center. “I want it clearly understood that anything I can do to help in the Glades, that is what I want to do,” said Congressman Hastings. “I consider this region of critical importance.” Congressman Hastings listened as staff and administration shared some of the hospital’s recent accomplishments, like high patient satisfaction scores and a signi cant reduction in patient wait times in the Emergency Room. He also heard about some challenges, such as a shortage of primary care physicians in the underserved region. Speaking to a number of the residents in the hospital’s Family Medicine Residency Program, the Congressman encouraged them to stay and practice in the rural communities after they graduated and thanked them for doing “God’s work in the Glades.” “We are pleased that Congressman Hastings visited Lakeside Medical Center and saw rsthand how our dedicated hospital staff delivers compassionate, quality care to 35,000 patients each year,” said Ronald J. Wiewora, MD, MPH, the Health Care District’s Chief Executive Of cer and Chief Medical Of cer. Dr. Wiewora, along with Hospital Administrator Thomas J. Leach, guided the Congressman on a tour of the hospital where he greeted physicians and staff in various departments as well as several patients. “Congressman Hastings recognizes the challenges that hospitals face in rural communities like the Glades,” said Mr. Leach. “All of us at Lakeside Medical Center greatly appreciate the fact that he took the time to tour our facility, learn more about our hospital and meet our staff and patients.” The day before, on May 14, Lakeside Medical Center hosted the Health Care District of Palm Beach County’s annual meeting of its Board of Commissioners. A number of community of cials and leaders attended the meeting, including Belle Glade Mayor Steve Wilson who welcomed the Board members to the Glades. At the meeting, the Board re-elected Carol A. Roberts as Board Chair. Commissioner Roberts was appointed to the Health Care District Board in October 2008 and again in October 2012 by the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners. The Health Care District Board also re-elected Philip H. Ward III as its Vice-Chair. Mr. Ward was appointed in October 2011 by Florida Governor Rick Scott. Brian R. Lohmann, who serves as the Glades’ representative on the Board, was also reelected to serve as Board Secretary. Also serving as volunteer Commissioners on the seven-member Board are: Alina M. Alonso, MD, Director of the Palm Beach County Health Department; Nancy C. Banner, Esq.; Angeleta Gray, Former Commissioner for the City of Delray Beach; and Leslie B. Daniels. Lakeside Medical Center’s Director of Nursing Elizabeth Fiegel, RN, MSN, presented to the Board details of the hospital’s recent success in improving patient wait and treatment times in the Emergency Room. Ms. Fiegel reported that the hospital’s “Just Like Home” initiative allows patients to see an ER physician within an average of six minutes of arrival and has reduced the time that patients are evaluated, treated and released from the hospital’s ER to slightly over two hours, which exceeds the national goal of three hours. 15 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 22, 2014 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe American Flamingo is mostly found in the West Indies, with some showing up in South Florida, Texas, South America, the Yucatan Peninsula and the Galapagos Islands. These birds, who were formally known as Greater Flamingos, are seen almost annually in the Everglades. Recently, a record-breaking 147 Flamingos were con rmed in a group at an undisclosed location in Palm Beach County, however, only two birds were observed last week at the same location. In order to protect themselves from predators, these birds usually live and feed in group, which are called a "colony," " amboyance," " urry," "regiment" or "strand" of amingos. Adult birds are tall and pink, with a long, lean, curved neck and a black-tipped bill with a downward bend. Young Flamingos are born gray and white, but turn pink when they are about two years old. The American Flamingo's voice is a honking goose-like, "huh-huh-huh." Their bent bills allow them to feed on plankton, tiny sh, y larvae and other organisms found in muddy ats or shallow water. They use their long legs and webbed feet to stir up the water bottom and then bury their bills or entire head to suck up mud and water. Morsels of food are then ltered from the mud with their beak and excess liquid is expelled. American Flamingos are known to reproduce in the Bahamas, Cuba, Mexico and Ecuador. At the beginning of nesting season they perform courtship displays with hundreds moving together in a coordinated walk. Once mating is complete, a pair takes turns incubating their single egg.InformationIf you would like to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers on June 12 or 14, email to Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail. com with your name and contact information, including an emergency cell number, the date you would like to participate, and the number of people in your party.
