Three Florida Department of Education employees were recently honored with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award. This regional award is presented to employers who support members of the National Guard or Reserve and their families through a wide range of measures, including exible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment and granting leaves of absence if needed. Career and Adult Education Chancellor Rod Duckworth, Kathleen Taylor and Eric Owens were recognized for their efforts. "As we do our important work here in the department, day in and day out, it's easy to forget that some of our colleagues spend their time away from work in reserve units of the military, defending our rights and freedoms," said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. "Employees who have past and present military experience are very valuable to our organization. They are disciplined, skilled and have a strong work ethic. They display pride, leadership and responsibility. I'm very proud of the three supervisors recognized today for their support of the reservists employed at DOE." Peters, who has worked with the Department of Education since 2012, said he nominated the individuals in his of ce because of their "overwhelming understanding, support and responsiveness of the needs of the United States Air Force Reserves." He said the support his spouse received while he was deployed was an added factor. "Supporting our staff members as they perform their military responsibilities is an honor as well as duty that we gladly accept," Duckworth said during the event held on the top oor of the Turlington Building. "In the case of our staff member, Senior Master Sergeant Scott Peters, we are fortunate to have an individual who performs to the highest standard in his service to his country and to the state of Florida." Lt. Colonel Robert Sweet, 476th Fighter Deputy Group Commander from Moody Air Force Base in Georgia, who was joined by Roger Trout of the Department of Defense Florida Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, said it is important to recognize employers and supervisors who overwhelmingly go out of their way to support reserve military members so they can perform and concentrate on their military duties without fail. Mother’s Day: Not a Day but a MiracleBY REV. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchYes, Mother’s Day has passed, but not motherhood. We celebrate, then more likely than not, forget for another year. Parenthood stays with us all throughout the year and I have re ected on it at many times during my life. We carry with us the lessons in our genes and souls that living with a parent brings; and mainly those lessons from our mothers who spend the greater part of their time with us. The Gospel of Luke (1:26ff) tells about a young girl, Mary, who is called by God to be a mother; not just any mother but the mother of Jesus. First, there is apprehension, ”How can this be (v.34)” and then the reminder “Nothing is impossible with God (v. 37)” Then comes her declaration “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said (v.38).” I have seen many times the coming of the realization that something very, very special is going to take place in a family when a child is to be born and being mother becomes more than a distant dream. Many times I have heard of “the miracle of birth” and the realization that we who share in the gift of parenthood do indeed participate in a miracle. God seems to select mothers and fathers and then, miraculously, calls them to use their skills and abilities to raise those He entrusts to them. Most striking to me was Mary’s response to learning she would be a mother: “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” The realization that motherhood is so very, very special is re ected in those words. Mary and all mothers share with God in His creation of life; nurturing of life, shaping bodies and minds and souls of those He entrusts with this creative nature He gives them. For those few years that we serve as parents, we work alongside of God in His creative process. Mothers are there to support, encourage, defend and protect, comfort, love, be there. They are the ones that make it all happen; birthdays and holidays, repairs on torn clothing, nding a few extra dollars for a baseball glove or bicycle, tempering reactions by impatient fathers and cushioning the blows when things go wrong. I see the parallel to what God does for us all in what mothers do. We pray to “Our Father…” and He certainly is; but His qualities extend beyond many of the roles attributed to His earthly counterparts. Mothers too recognize that “I am the Lord’s servant” and bring those qualities that are God-like in many ways to God’s children. My own mother turns 100 years old in a few weeks; I am her oldest son and have seen her perhaps the longest of any of her family now. I never cease to marvel at her determination and tenacity; her many skills and abilities and her living through many tumultuous times in history and taking them all in her stride. With all of them, she is rst and foremost “mother” and carries her role as I envision Mary carried hers; “I am the Lord’s servant” and she has been that servant to her children and grandchildren as God has called her. No doubt your mother is that person too with those qualities that are worthy of celebrating more than one Sunday a year. May you take some time to remember and say “Thank you” – words can be so inadequate, but mothers have a way of understanding what is truly meant by them. Give thanks to God for them, too. My words of thanksgiving are often inadequate to Him as well; but I know He understands – He’s shown me that he does in that woman who has been with me from the beginning.Christian Fellowship ScholarshipCLEWISTON — Five separate $500 general scholarships will be awarded to local students. BY DR. DARAYES MOBED General Surgeon at Hendry Regional Medical CenterHave you been trying to ignore the tingling or numbness that you’ve had in your hand and wrist? Are you attributing the sharp, piercing pain that shoots through your wrist and up your arm as passing cramps? More than likely, you have carpal tunnel syndrome, a painful and progressive condition caused by compression of a key nerve in the wrist, the Median nerve. Carpal tunnel is a medical condition in which the Median nerve, running from the forearm into the hand, becomes compressed or squeezed at the wrist. The result may be pain, weakness or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm. Although many associate carpal tunnel syndrome with hours spent working on a computer keyboard, carpal tunnel can actually result from a variety of other job tasks, where the motions of your hands and wrists are stressed. A few examples of these include using power tools, participating in heavy assembly line work, sewing, etc. Carpal tunnel symptoms usually start gradually, with frequent burning, tingling or itching numbness in the palm of the hands and ngers, especially around the thumb and the index nger and middle ngers. The dominant hand is usually affected rst and produces the most severe pain. Women are three times more likely to develop carpal tunnel than men, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Conditions such as thyroid problems, diabetes, obesity and rheumatoid arthritis can increase the risk of this disorder. It is important to seek early diagnosis and treatment to avoid permanent damage of the Median nerve. A physician can examine the hands, arms, shoulders, and neck to determine if a patient’s complaints are related to daily activities or an underlying disorder such as carpal tunnel syndrome. The physician can also use speci c tests to try to produce the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Sometimes, it may be necessary for the physician to con rm the diagnosis by performing other tests that use electrical activity (EMG). In special circumstances, various drugs can ease the pain and swelling associated with this condition. When therapy, exercise, and drugs do not alleviate the symptoms, surgery may be recommended. With tiny cutting tools, the surgeon would make a small incision at the wrist and release the compression on the Median nerve by gently transecting the transverse carpal ligament. The small incisions are closed with stitches. When a patient undergoes carpal tunnel surgery, he/she usually goes home on the same day as the surgery and can expect a quick recovery period. The pain and numbness may go away right after surgery, or it may take several weeks. If you have any symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, please seek an evaluation from a physician. The treatment is quick and successful. For additional information regarding carpal tunnel syndrome, call 863-983-5026 or 863-675-2356. Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 15, 2014 8 GREAT IS THE ART OF BEGINNING, BUT GREATER THE ART IS OF ENDING. LONGFELLOW Over 200 volunteers showed up for the Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful event in an effort to keep Belle Glade litter free. They cleaned various areas of the city and returned to the library for to enjoy a lunch provided by Okeelanta. Palm Beach County Fire ghters prepared the hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken wings, chips, and a cold drink for the volunteers. Volunteers collected just over nine tons of trash and other debris. Cleanup crews could be seen all over the city; some of the speci c areas cleaned were the Walgreens' corner, the PNC Bank/Winn-Dixie area, Mace and Lyons Parks, and the corner of Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Ryan Shackelford from PNC Bank spearheaded the event and coordinated with the Chamber of Commerce and the city of Belle Glade. Other agencies involved in making the day a success were the Solid Waste Authority, Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful, Macy's, Publix, Southern Waste Systems, WalMart, Searcy, Denny, Scarola, Barnhart & Shipley, Arcadis, Skanska, Pratt & Whitney, PNC Bank, City of Belle Glade, and Belle Glade Chamber. The City Commission has discussed having these cleanup days on a regular basis but no de nite plan has been formalized although other events have been held recently within the city. Belle Glade's mayor stated that he was pleased with the positive outcome of the event. Numerous drownings in recent weeks underscore importance of following water safety tipsFLORIDA SWIMMING POOL ASSOCIATIONWater safety is an important topic year-round in Florida. Children and adults should be aware of the steps necessary to stay safe. There have been numerous drownings and near drownings in Florida in recent weeks. Below are some important water and swimming pool safety tips. When near the water, watch children with constant, undivided attention. Do not become distracted with things such as text messaging, talking on the phone or yard work. Have a designated pool watcher keep an eye on swimmers at all times. Watching your children is just as important when everyone is indoors. Children are curious, creative and innovative; they can quickly gure out how to get outside and water can pique their interest. For this reason it is important to have several layers of protection between children and the pool. Safety devices that are available include a mesh barrier fence, self-closing and self-latching gate, alarms for doors and windows and for detection in and around the pool, personal immersion alarms, certi ed safety covers, and life rings and shepherd's hooks. Do not leave anything near the fence that a child could use to climb over it and remove steps to above ground pools when not in use. Learn to swim and enroll children in swimming lessons survival classes can start as early as six months old. Learn CPR and keep emergency phone numbers posted in the pool area. While a backyard swimming pool is an obvious place to be practicing water safety, don't forget that bathtubs, lakes or ponds, in atable kiddie pools and the beach are all on the list. Additional pool rules and safety tips are available at www. oridapoolpro.com or upon request. The Florida Swimming Pool Association is a trade association for the pool and spa industry in Florida. There are approximately 600 member businesses in 16 Chapters across the state. Members are required to abide by a code of ethics and to be properly licensed and insured. FSPA provides the industry with access to continuing education courses, information on current trends and issues, an arbitration program and government relations representation. FSPA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Margaret Froggatt, of Okeechobee, wishes to announce the engagement of her daughter, Michelle L. Harper to Rick Krnotch. Thousands of teens in Palm Beach County are expected to participate in the thirteenth National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. The purpose of the National Campaign is to focus the attention of teens on the importance of avoiding too-early pregnancy and parenthood through an interactive on line quiz. The Teen Pregnancy Coalition which includes the School District of Palm Beach County, the Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County, Planned Parenthood, Healthy Mothers/Healthy Babies, Healthy Beginnings, the Palm Beach County Children’s Services Council and the Health Care District support efforts to reduce teen pregnancy and repeat pregnancies in our student population. Teen pregnancy rates in Palm Beach County have continued to drop to 684 births to teens age 15-19 in 2013. Of those births, one-sixth were to teen mothers who already had at least one child. Further education is needed to continue a downward trend. Three in 10 girls in the United States will get pregnant before the age of 20. Less than half of all teen mothers graduate from high school and male children born to teen mothers are twice as likely to end up in prison. These are sobering statistics. “We all need to work together to convince young people that adolescence should be a time for education and growing up, instead of a time for pregnancy and parenthood,” said Amy Crease with Student Intervention Services. “Encourage teens you know in Palm Beach County to visit www.pbcteens.org to take the quiz, which is available throughout the month of May.” For more information please contact Ms. Crease at amy.crease@palmbeachschools.org or 561-494-1592. florida.newszap.com Check out these new features: • Daily Local News Updates • New interactive and easy to navigate format • Plus much, much more!Come see for yourself! 13 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 15, 2014 GLADE VIEW ELEMENTARYThe Harvest Day Celebration at Glade View was a huge success. The theme: Changing a Community One Generation at a Time re ected the school-wide effort of the staff and students to share with families and the community the “Teaching Gardens.” The students proudly shared in song, cheer, and stepping performances related to healthy eating. Students sampled salsa, mint and lemon water, carrots and celery. In addition, students were served sherbet w/mint for dessert while having lunch in the garden. Each grade level rotated to the various stations which included: Harvesting Seeds, 4-H Club, Compost (3-5), Vegetable Activity (K2), and Rock Painting. The Teaching Gardens at Glade View was made possible through the American Heart Association. About the Teaching GardenObesity is one of the most expensive health care problems in America. One third of U.S. children are overweight or obese putting them at higher risk of heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association is taking a new approach in the ght against childhood obesity. We’ve teamed with noted child-nutrition activist and philanthropist Kelly Meyer to create the American Heart Association Teaching Gardens planted in elementary schools across the country that become real-life learning laboratories for students to learn what it means to be healthy. Aimed at rst graders through fth, we teach children how to plant seeds, nurture growing plants, harvest produce and ultimately understand the value of good eating habits. Garden-themed lessons teach nutrition, math, science and other subjects all while having fun in the fresh air and working with your hands. Together, we can dramatically change the way America thinks about and consumes food. There to accept the award was Karis Engle, executive director of The Glades Initiative. Engle said she was excited just to be one of the nalists for the award and said it was nice to be recognized for what The Glades Initiative does within the county. “What’s especially exciting for us is being recognized in doing something within the county. It’s important for me and our staff to remember that’s what we do,” said Engle, as one of the many roles of The Glades Initiative is helping people within the Glades access health care. The six-person staff at The Glades Initiative help individuals get access to health insurance, and have staff who can help clients navigate the Affordable Care Act. Among other services, the agency helps bilingual individuals become medical interpreters through a 40-hour training session. The Glades Initiative not only helps people access health care, they also help people access food stamps. The dif culties of language and computer or Internet access bring in a lot of clients to The Glades Initiative of ce in Belle Glade, according to Engle. But it is the of ce and its dedicated staff that make The Glades Initiative such a driving force within the community. “Some were nominated as individuals and some as of ces,” said Engle of the Heroes of Medicine awards. “I like that it was our of ce that was nominated because our effect on the community is great. I’m just a representative of the of ce. I certainly can’t help thousands of people get health care all by myself.” GIContinued From Page 1 Visit your nearest state forest for exploration, learning and relaxationAnyone searching for an affordable day or weekend trip in Florida should look no further than their nearest Florida State Forest.
