BY JOSE JESUS ZARAGOZA e SunA violent confrontation at a South Bay convenience store that led to one man being shot four times may have been carried out by a man on a bicycle, according to investigators. Two days after the shooting, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Of ce arrested Taide Wiston Asencio Jr., 21, who was charged with aggravated battery with a rearm, two counts of aggravated assault with a rearm and shooting into an occupied conveyance. Deputies responded to the shooting incident shortly after noon on Friday, April 20. According to witnesses, the suspect had arrived at the Quik BY AMANDA RAMOS-GUY Special to e SunCongressman Alcee Hastings and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Greco met with Glades residents Thursday, April 24, in a town hall meeting at Pahokee High School to answer questions regarding the Herbert Hoover Dike Rehabilitation Project. Glades residents were able to address Congressman Hastings and Army Corp of cials with questions and concerns regarding the project in a question-answer forum. Lt. Col. Greco assured Glades residents that the Army Corps’ goal is to restore the dike to the design criteria that it had in the 1940s and 1950s, to protect the embankment of the dike, prevent sinkholes, stop water from seeping out, and repair weak points within the culverts. Lt. Col. Greco explained that out of the 700 dams in the Army Corps’ portfolio, the Herbert Hoover Dike is in the list of the top 16 dams that are considered as priority projects. The $640 million project is focused on ood risk reduction. South Bay Commissioner Esther BY NAJI TOBIAS Special to e SunFocused, hungry and ready for action -those three attributes can apply to Glades Day’s baseball team, which won the District 12-2A tournament last week in a 8-2 triumph over Atlantic Christian Academy at Homer Hand Field. With the victory, the Gators (18-4 overall record) will be hosting Master’s Academy (Vero Beach) at home in the Class 2A regional quarter nals. The state playoff game is scheduled to start today at 4 p.m. “All the hard work we put in is now paying off for us,” said Jaime Rodriguez, who has a .560 batting average with 19 RBI after 22 games played this season. Glades Day (8-0 in District 12-2A; regular season) has seen some bigtime production from the likes of Rodriguez and Jonathan Leon, who leads all Palm Beach County hitters with a .590 batting average. Leon is Glades Day’s team leaders in doubles (eight), triples (two) and RBI (20). The Gators have also seen signi cant contributions on the plate from Thomas Corzo (.445 BA), Jared McMillan (.430 BA), Oscar Ruiz (.430 BA; 15 RBI), Noel Figueroa (.380 BA), Kolby Ward (.380 BA; 10 RBI) and Justin Sager (.330 BA). On the pitching mound, Figueroa has proven to be the team leader, as he has posted a 6-0 record with an earned run average of 1.00. Corzo has been an asset as well, going 4-1 with a 1.20 ERA to date. Pitcher Nick Hudak (3-1 record; 2.10 ERA) has also been a key contributor this season to Glades Day’s pitching rotation. “The team is playing together,” Gators baseball head coach Mike Underwood said. “Everyone is performing their responsibility. We’ll see how far this can take us in the playoffs.” If Glades Day takes down Master’s Academy today at Homer Hand Field, then the Muck’s best baseball team will advance to the Class 2A regional semi nals against the Merritt Island Christian/Atlantic Christian Academy winner. However, if the Gators lose today, then their season is over. Here’s hoping that Glades Day seizes the day and extends its playoff run to at least another game next week. Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 1, 2014 4 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonChimney Swifts breed in the United States and southern Canada. Chimney Swifts are usually found in Florida from March until midOctober. They y long distances to their wintering grounds in western Brazil, eastern Peru and other locations in South America. Chimney Swift look like a " ying cigar" when soaring overhead. This small bird has a sooty gray to black elongated body with a slightly lighter or even silvery gray throat. They have large eyes. Chimney Swifts are not capable of perching on a branch or walking on the ground like other birds. They have extremely short legs, hooks on their tiny claws and stiff spiked tail feathers that are adapted for clinging to vertical surfaces. Their high-pitched rapid chirping twitters are often heard when they are in ight. These rapidly ying birds spend most of their time in the air when they aren't nesting or roosting at night. In ight they catch insects, drink, bathe and collect nesting materials. The birds nest in chimneys, rock walls and buildings. The half-cup-shaped nest is made from small sticks which are glued together, and secured to a rock wall or chimney with their saliva. Both parents help incubate the clutch of three to seven white glossy eggs for 19-21 days. Chicks are capable of ight at 28-30 days of age, but may leave the nest after three weeks and cling to the wall.Information If you would like to participate in a bird trip to STA5 e-mail Margaret England. FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTHThe Florida Department of Health will recognize the 20th anniversary of National Infant Immunization Week April 26 May 3, 2014. The Department reminds parents about the bene ts of immunizing children against vaccine-preventable diseases. Immunizations are one of the most effective ways to protect infants and children from potentially serious diseases. Parents should discuss immunization choices with their child's healthcare provider. "Ensuring that our children are vaccinated at an early age is essential to the health and wellbeing of Florida's kids," said Dr. Celeste Philip, Deputy Secretary for Health and Deputy State Health Of cer for Children's Medical Services. "We encourage parents to follow the recommended immunization schedule, providing immunity early in life, before infants and children may be exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases." Provisional 2013 data from CDC indicate more than 24,000 cases of whooping cough (pertussis) occurred in the US, including 9 deaths. All of the deaths were in infants younger than 3 months old. Pertussis is a vaccine-preventable disease. Although there has been a decrease in incidence since 2012, case numbers of pertussis in the US remain high. The provisional data for 2013 indicate Florida had 729 cases of pertussis, including one death. This represents an increase in the number of pertussis cases in Florida over 2012. Along with immunizations for infants, adults who care for infants should receive a Tdap booster to ensure that illness is not transferred from caregiver to baby. Through collaboration with health care professionals around our state, we can combat and decrease the unnecessary harm caused by this disease each year by continuing to immunize children and adults. For information about immunizations, please visit www.immunize orida.org or contact your county health department. Health care providers may also sign up to access the statewide immunization registry at http://www. shots.com/ to keep an online record of their patients' immunization records. The Department works to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts. Follow us on Twitter at @HealthyFla and on Facebook. A National Day of Prayer: Keep Praying, God AnswersBY REV. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchThere is a call for a National Day for Prayer, May 1. It coincides with the publication of the news for today and is worthy of a national response. Many will not make it to the city-wide celebration but, hopefully, will take a moment out to talk with the Creator-Sustainer-Redeemer of the universe. Very simply, God answers prayers. He does not always give the answer wanted, nor does He alter the way things are meant to go just for our personal convenience. The prayer that we were given was “…thy will be done…” and not “just mine.” If they are one and the same, all well and good. If not, then I go back to what one of my mentors said about God answering prayer: “keep praying until you get it right!” Maybe we pray for the wrong things, maybe our interests get in the way of God’s purpose. Maybe we are asking for things that are sel sh or ignore that there are others involved, who also have their prayers that differ from ours. Nevertheless, when I keep at it, something will eventually come to provide the answer. Our call is to pray for “our daily bread” and not the whole grocery store! One thing at a time, enough for the present need, tomorrow will be different and with different challenges. In the meantime, keep the line open. I remember hearing years ago that God answers prayers in one of three ways: Yes, No, or Not Now. I also remember hearing “Prayer changes things, or you will change.” Many of the things I prayed for didn’t come as I wanted; they came in a different fashion. I am the better for it; God knew what He was doing and I have re ected on one of the works of a concentration camp survivor who knew of the depths of life and tragedies of human existence. This physician advised that instead of saying “It can’t happen to me,” say instead “It shall happen to me.” He brought home “….thy will be done…” and forced me to face the possibility that the future is unknown for us but that many of the things we’re afraid of are not the end. In the meantime, I work to keep in touch with the one who directs, intervenes, comforts, teaches, listens and heals. A group of farmers immigrated to a rural area to pioneer and develop the agriculture in a wild country. It was hard work. They knew it was going to be hard, but the rocky soil wasn’t really conducive to farming, and many of them decided to return home. The loss of numbers and the strangeness of the land was depressing to those who stayed. Things weren’t going well. One farmer stayed and prayed that God would show him the way. Over time, more and more moved away and conditions became more and more dif cult. Machinery would break down and parts were hard to get, rain didn’t come when needed, crops seemed to fail. Nevertheless, staying and praying were the order of the day for the one who nally remained. Now, on top of all of the other hardships, snakes started to invade the farm. The one who stayed prayed and uttered “God, you must have a purpose in all of this” and was about to throw in the towel when someone pointed out that snake venom was used in medicine. A little investigation and contacts with pharmaceutical houses brought a surprising response. Yes, they were interested; yes, the venom had medicinal uses; yes, they would pay well for the “harvest.” Now farming took a different turn, another problem became an answer and gave meaning to all of the struggles. Harvesting was to be re-learned and humanity would be served in a most unexpected way with greater bene ts to people than ever had been thought of in the past. Prayers were answered and that realization made all the difference. Keep at it, keep in touch, “…thy will… it will be done” and it will be of God, and good. If you would like to contact Rev. SUN SPOTS BY MELISSA BELTZ e SunIn an effort to foster partnerships between GEO Group, Inc. and the tri-city communities, Warden Don L. Stine hosted more than a dozen community leaders on April 29 for a Community Relations Board meeting at the South Bay facility. The GEO Group, Inc. manages the South Bay Correctional Facility, a minimum-security prison currently housing 1,893 male inmates in its 20,000-square-foot facility located on U.S. 27. Community leaders shuf ed into the facility on Tuesday morning to network and brainstorm with members of the GEO Group and other community agencies in a two-hour, round-table discussion. Representatives from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Of ce, the cities of South Bay, Belle Glade and Pahokee, the Florida Department of Corrections, the Department of Health, Palm Beach State College, Glades Central High School and Lakeshore Middle School gathered in a conference room to discuss ways the GEO Group -whose facility reportedly contributed over $23 million to the local economy through wages, employee bene ts, donations, equipment, supplies and service contracts -could work together with local agencies to contribute even more to the community. From an academic standpoint, Glades Central High School and Palm Beach State College asked to partner with the correctional facility for different educational programs. The vice principal of Glades Central suggested at-risk students come and talk to inmates at the facility. Those inmates, he said, could share their stories and experiences with the students to help keep students “on the straight and narrow.” On the other hand, GEO Group staff members could participate in career day activities to show students the employment opportunities that exist at the correctional facility, said the vice principal. Provost of Palm Beach State College in Belle Glade, Dr. Holly Bennett, suggested the GEO Group accept interns from the college who are participating in the college’s experiential learning program. From a community outreach standpoint, Warden Stine suggested Belle Glade Chamber of Commerce Director Brenda Bunting use the facility as an opportunity to share things that are happening within the community, sending out email blasts to staff members and posting happenings on the bulletin board. Warden Stine reiterated the importance of his staff members and their involvement in the community. Of the 424 total staff members, two-thirds live and work in the tri-city communities, he said. Staff members have participated in community events such as the Black Gold Jubilee parade and the city-wide cleanups held on April 26. Belle Glade City Manager Lomax Harrelle wondered if the inmates could be used to complete city projects. Before GEO built the new facility in South Bay, the city of Belle Glade utilized six to 10 inmates per day for city projects, said Harrelle. Warden Stine said, though 60 to 80 inmates leave the facility each day to work in the elds around the Glades through the PRIDE program, he would look into whether or not inmates could be used for projects in the city. Warden Stine said he was aware that such programs would be valuable not only to the city of Belle Glade, but also to the GEO Group. Lieutenants and captains of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Of ce also spoke of their willingness to partner with the GEO Group, especially to run mock drills for their deputies in case those deputies were ever called to an emergency at the facility. By the end of the meeting, community representatives had made some important contacts and expressed their eagerness to partner with each other and the GEO Group. Warden Stine bid adieu to the group and said he would like to hold these types of meetings quarterly. Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 1, 2014 8 Berry pointed out to the panel that the dike has 10 regular spillways but questioned as to why there were no emergency spillways. Scott Burch, chief of the Geotech Branch in Jacksonville District’s Engineering Division, explained that because the dike was not originally engineered with an emergency spillway should the waters spill over they would spill onto the residents. He further explained that this is the reason the Corp is taking proactive measures to prevent the possibility of spillage. Tammy Jackson-Moore questioned the safety of the dike since South Florida has not has a major hurricane since 2005. “At some point our luck is going to run out,” she said. “The dike is much safer today than it was 10 years ago,” replied Mr. Burch but added that there is still approximately 120 miles of the dike wall that is not safe should the water levels become high enough. “We are in a better position but there are still risks that we need to prepare for,” he said. Marcos Montes de Oca, public works director for the city of Belle Glade, questioned that even though the dike may be safer, FEMA has not certi ed it. Lt. Col. Greco stated that FEMA will not certify the dike until all of the work is completed. Mr. Scott added that the Corp is trying to work with Washington to certify the areas that are completed instead of waiting for the entire 143mile project’s completion. Congressman Hastings asked the question that seemed to be on everyone’s mind—when will the project be completed? “I have been working on this dam thing for my whole career,” the congressman said. Ingrid Bon, project manager for the Herbert Hoover Dike, stated that, provided the Corps receives the funding as requested, the culvert phase would be completed in 2019. City of cials from Pahokee and Clewiston wanted to know if the Corps planned to repair the damage they caused to the scenic trail on the dike’s wall. Ms. Bon stated that the Corps was not permitted to spend funds on the repaving of the trail and explained that the state was planning to begin paving on the west wall. Some areas have already been paved and were paid for by the State of Florida, she said. Ms. Bon also addressed the topic of landside rehabilitation and explained that those plans had been abandoned. The Corps is looking at the dike as a whole instead of in sections as they had in the past. DIKEContinued From Page 1 BY MELISSA BELTZ e SunThe Belle Glade Campus of Palm Beach State College received a special donation on April 22 from chemistry whiz Michael Rosen, who wrote a successful chemistry study guide during his junior year of college. Rosen grew up in New York state and attended college at the University of Delaware, graduating in 2009 and majoring in chemistry. While in college, Rosen began tutoring students in chemistry. Students quickly realized Rosen’s knack for breaking down the dif cult material in a way that was easy to understand, and Rosen became a popular chemistry tutor at the university. “Not only was I a personal tutor, but I was appointed to be the “Group Tutor Facilitator” for general chemistry at the University of Delaware, where I tutored lecture halls full of students. As word got out about how helpful I was, more and more students started coming to my sessions, and I would have upwards of 200 students a night,” said Rosen. Rosen cites his tutoring techniques, easy ways of remembering the material and funny mnemonic devices as the reasons for his success. Rosen decided, in his junior year at university, that he would use his winter break to write a book that could reach even more students of chemistry. “As a 21-year-old junior in college, I sat down during winter break and wrote the book in just under seven weeks,” said Rosen. “What makes my book different from any other book out there is that it is one of the only, if not the only, chemistry reference books written by a student.” Rosen calls his reference book “an easy to read, concise and straight to the point study guide” suitable for all general chemistry classes, including high school AP classes. The 186-page reference book, “The Guide To Surviving General Chemistry,” includes Rosen’s mnemonic devices, is easy to follow and offers tips and techniques to remember the most important topics. Rosen said he wanted to keep the book simple, unlike many textbooks on the market today. “My book is one of the only chemistry books out there that is written by a student, for his fellow students. There is typically a disconnect between the professor’s level of understanding and that of a student. Being a student myself, I know exactly where students have dif culty, the way they learn and the typical mistakes they make on exams. I spoon feed them the information and help students who are completely lost get back on track,” said Rosen. Rosen’s book was published in 2007 and can be found in many university bookstores across the United States, on Amazon.com and Rosen’s own website. Individuals can now nd Rosen’s book at Palm Beach State College’s Belle Glade Campus. Rosen, who just nished his rst year of dental residency in New York, traveled to the Belle Glade campus on April 22 to donate 30 books to the college’s bookstore. “My overall goal is to help students as much as I can. ... I know what it is like to struggle as a student, and how frustrating science textbooks can be with their dense science vocabulary and hard-to-follow format. I take pride in offering students help, to allow them to get through general chemistry and continue on with their career paths. I am trying to donate books to as many schools as I can, and help as many students as possible,” he said. Anyone interested in purchasing Rosen’s book can visit his website, www. survivechem.com, or email him directly at survivechem@gmail.com. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.65/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 30.9 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 10.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 12.9 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 16.5 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. “While the national average has risen for the 12th straight week, it is likely nearing a peak,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “Gas price increases have continued since early February but are likely nearing an end as oil re neries conclude seasonal maintenance, and the switchover to summer gasoline is nearing completion. Meanwhile, oil inventories are at their highest ever level as reported by the Energy Information Administration, which cited crude oil stocks at a record high of 397.7 million barrels, which should help propel oil prices lower in coming weeks as some storage facilities near capacity. For motorists, the peak to retail gasoline prices is likely very near, with some relief to follow in coming weeks as pressure eases on factors that drive gasoline prices, “ DeHaan said. Gas Price UpdateINCLUDING THE CHANGE IN GAS PRICES IN FLORIDA DURING THE PAST WEEK, PRICES YESTERDAY WERE 30.9 CENTS PER GALLON HIGHER THAN THE SAME DAY ONE YEAR AGO AND ARE 10.7 CENTS PER GALLON HIGHER THAN A MONTH AGO.

Stop store in South Bay, located at 190 S.R. 27, on a bicycle and then opened re at a truck occupied by three men. The suspect then ed, managing to elude capture. The driver of the vehicle, Santiago Gallegos, 31, was hit three times in the arm and once in the head, according to a police report of the incident. Gallegos was transported to Delray Medical Center in critical condition. Two passengers in the vehicle, Anthony Sanchez, 17, and Mario Cardenas, 21, were not injured. Video at the location showed the suspect entering the store to purchase a drink. The video showed distinguishing features of the suspect, including large tattoos on his neck and both arms. The video also managed to capture the shooting outside. Investigators were also able to follow a lead that the alleged shooter purchased rearm ammunition the previous morning at True Value in Belle Glade. Surveillance video from that store showed the suspect, accompanied by another man, purchasing a box of .380 caliber ammunition, which matched the bullets used in the South Bay shooting. Witnesses were also able to pick out Asencio from a lineup and a warrant for his arrest was issued. When he was found, the suspect told police that the victim had threatened him months prior to the incident. When the suspect saw the victim reaching for "something" that day, he decided he was not going to take chances and shot at the victim rst. The suspect did not tell deputies where the gun he allegedly used was located. The victim underwent surgery and was last listed as being in severe condition but was expected to survive.
