BY AMANDA RAMOS-GUY Special to e SunCity-wide beauti cation efforts are in full swing in Belle Glade. Construction has begun on the pavilion at the marina and a community clean-up day has been held with more being planned in an effort to make the city more enticing to new businesses and more pleasant for residents. The city held its groundbreaking ceremony for the pavilion at the Belle Glade marina on Monday, December 23. The pavilion was destroyed in hurricane Wilma in 2005. The city received a portion of the money necessary to rebuild from FEMA but was unable to get their insurance company to cover the remaining portion. After a long struggle with the city's insurance provider, City Manager Lomax Harrelle was able to obtain the funds. As a result of the lengthy battle, Commissioner Mike Martin suggested to the commission in a prior commission meeting that the new pavilion should be named after Mr. Harrelle. "That project was dead in the water and no one else was able to make it happen but Max' did," he said. The name of the pavilion will be "The Lomax Harrelle Pavilion". The project will cost approximately $518,000. The foundation was poured on January 9. The slab alone contains more than a million pounds of concrete and steel. Although the pavilion will not be completely nished in time for the Black Gold Festival, it is expected to be completed to a safe and accessible point for festival attendees to use. Another focus for the city has become ridding the community of litter. Vice-Mayor Mary Wilkerson and Wallace Shannonhouse have partnered in a campaign to clean up the city and make residents conscious of the cleanliness of their surrounding areas. T J V. N. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, although one of the accidents involved a collision with a moving train. The events shut down traf c on the highway for two hours while emergency aid responded and investigators with the sheriff's of ce and Florida Highway Patrol pored over the scene. Emergency crews responded to the scene of the accidents at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 28 -maneuvering through stubborn fog themselves -to nd a number of accidents between S.R. 80 and Hatton Highway and Sugar House Road. PBSO reports the rst accident occurred on S.R. 80, just east of Sugar House Road near a railroad crossing. One of the vehicles involved sideswiped two other vehicles and collided into a train crossing the roadway. It may have been a particularly heavy fog that descended on the area, as a second accident was reported approximately 1,000 yards west of the rst scene, this one involving four vehicles. According to the sheriff's of ce, the combination of the thick fog obscuring visibility, as well as careless driving under the conditions, was responsible for the accidents. Five people were transported to nearby Lakeside Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Roads were reopened at 10:30 a.m. 7-Vehicle Crash Sends 5 People to HospitalHeavy Tuesday morning fog outside BG cuts visibility, reports PBSO PHOTO/ JOSE ZARAGOZAA thick fog covered the Glades area on Tuesday, causing accidents.

Wisdom Comes With AgeBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchI woke up this morning one year older. Some days I handle it better than others. All my life, I’ve been taught to respect my elders. Now I am one. I’m reminded of what one friend shared with me, “You know you are getting older when you try to straighten out the wrinkles in your socks only to nd you aren’t wearing any.” Growing older. Aging. We can laugh about it, make jokes about it, and groan about it, but we can’t stop it. So, what do we do with birthdays? As much as we might like to avoid them, we can’t. So why not celebrate them? Birthdays are good for us. The more we have, the longer we live. According to the Scriptures, “advanced years should teach wisdom,” so here is some of mine. Pocket the ones you nd of value, toss those you don’t. A positive mind-set can make your day. It’s better to set your mind so that when you wake up you can say, “Good morning, Lord,” and not, “Good Lord, it’s morning.” Words can hurt people more than sticks and stones. Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. But when you forget, never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on. There would be fewer problems with children if they had to chop wood to keep the television set going. Teenagers will do dumb things. Whoever came up with the phrase to “sleep like a baby” probably didn’t have one. Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their maker. More often than not, it’s the second mouse that gets the cheese. The easy way is not always the best way; and, often, the harder it is to do something, the stronger it makes you. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. To say no to someone is not wrong. We could learn a lot from crayons -some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull and some have weird names, but they all have to live in the same box. There is truth and value to what Robert Fulghum shared in “All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten.” Think what a better world it would be if everyone had cookies and milk at about three o’clock every afternoon, then laid down with their blankies for a nap. Or if all governments and people had a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own messes. And it is still true, no matter how many birthdays we’ve had, when we go out into the world, it’s best to hold hands and stick together. Life is not fair, but God is good. Together, we can all make it through with this truth.Defending Your FaithCLEWISTON — How can an individual defend his faith in a world that casts doubt? How can an individual answer the doubter, the skeptic and the atheist? The Sunday night series at Community Christian Church continue this Sunday at 6 p.m. Community Christian Church is located at 201 N Francisco Street in Clewiston. The series began Jan. 12; each session is about one-hour in length. Subjects to be covered are: What is Christian Apologetics? How can we answer the doubters? Is the text of the Bible accurate and trustworthy? How do we know the people, places, and events of the Bible are true? How can God be in all places at the same time? How can God hear millions of prayers at the same time? What is the Nature and Reality of this world and universe? Can we know for sure that Jesus did rise from the dead? The session will be led by Mr. Jon Loftis and Dr. E. Arlin Bolejack. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Public school families and employees are invited to bank with Suncoast, Florida’s largest credit union. LOWEST PRICE EVERYDAY! 5 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee January 30, 2014 RELIGION NEWS AND INFORMATION John Hicks BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe Crested Caracara is a tropical version of a vulture. Its range in the United States is normally only in Arizona, Texas and Florida. The subspecies known as Audubon’s Crested Caracara is present year-round in Florida. There are only about 250 pairs of this federally threatened subspecies nesting in Florida, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. The Crested Caracara is a large, long-legged tropical falcon about the size of an Osprey. It is often referred to as the Mexican Eagle. It has a black cap, black body and a white tail with a wide, black tip. The bare skin on its face is bright orange-red when it is at rest, preening or engaged in other non-aggressive behaviors. When threatened, the facial skin changes to a pumpkin color and, nally, to a pale yellow. The crest at the end of the Caracara’s cap lays at when it is comfortable and not threatened, but it will raise its crest when it feels threatened, frightened or is on alert. This bird is mostly silent. During courtship, or in the early morning or evening, it may throw its head back until it almost touches its shoulders and make a high, crackling sound that resembles its Brazilian name. Caracara are often reported in dry or wet prairie areas with scattered cabbage palms, or are seen eating carrion along roadways in the counties surrounding Lake Okeechobee. Their diet includes carrions, insects, mammals and invertebrates, including sh, snakes, turtles, birds and mammals. Crested Caracaras are often reported along County Road 833 in Hendry County and County Road 78 in Glades County. Caracara nest as early as September, with the height of their nesting season in January or February. Adult Caracaras are territorial and form persistent pair bonds. Their bulky nest of vines and sticks is usually built in a cabbage palm. The female lays one to four white or buffy colored eggs that are incubated for 32 to 33 days. The young remain in the nest for approximately eight weeks. These birds reach sexual maturity when they are three to four years old. Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers often see Caracara and other bird species at STA-5 in south Hendry County. Last week, 93 species were observed, including Caracara. Anyone interested in participating in the free driving trips at STA-5 on Feb. 1, 15, 16 or 17 should e-mail Margaret England at sta5birding@embarqmail.com or call 863-6740695 or 863-517-0202. The schedule of STA-5 trips through December 2014, and upcoming Hendry-Glades Audubon programs, are available on the HGAS website at: www.hendrygladesaudubon.org. Bicycling/walking is now available during daylight hours on Friday, Saturday and Monday year-round at STA-5. Amenities at the Deer Fence Public Trailhead at east end of Deer Fence Road include a public parking area, signage and composting toilet. Make a note on the calendar for Hendry County’s “O” Birding Festival, being held March 9 through 13. Noroviruses are found in the stool or vomit of infected people. Norovirus is highly contagious and may cause vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps. Anyone can be infected and get sick with noroviruses. Symptoms usually start within 24 to 48 hours and most people begin to feel better within one or two days and have no longterm health effects. NOTE: People with Norovirus illness are contagious from the moment they begin feeling sick until at least three days after they recover. But, some people may be contagious for even longer. There is no vaccine to prevent Norovirus infection and there is no drug to treat people who get sick from the virus. Antibiotics will not help if you have Norovirus illness. This is because antibiotics ght against bacteria, not viruses. Norovirus can spread quickly from person to person in crowded, closed places. People can become infected with the virus in several ways including: Touching surfaces or objects contaminated with the virus, and then placing their hands in their mouth. Eating food or drinking liquids that have been contaminated with the virus, usually from the food handler not washing their hands properly. Eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with Norovirus when someone gets stool or vomit on their hands, and then touches the food or drink. Having direct contact with another person who is infected and showing symptoms, for example, caring for someone who is infected or sharing food or eating utensils with someone who is infected. The best way to reduce chances of getting Norovirus is by following some simple tips: Wash hands frequently, especially after going to the bathroom, changing diapers, before eating and prior to preparing food. Carefully wash fruits and vegetables and cook foods completely before eating them. Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces immediately after an episode of illness by using bleach-based household cleaners. Immediately remove and wash clothing or linens that may be contaminated with the virus after an episode of illness (use hot water and soap). Flush or discard any vomit and/or stool in the toilet and clean the surrounding area. People who have symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea should not prepare or handle food until they are completely free of symptoms and for at least three days after all symptoms are gone. Any foods that may have been contaminated by an ill person should be thrown away. For additional information, visit http://www.cdc.gov/ Features/Norovirus/ or talk with a healthcare provider. What is Norovirus? i w t b t e KNOW YOU WHAT IT IS TO BE A CHILD? IT IS TO BELIEVE IN LOVELI-NESS; IT IS TO BE SO LITTLE THAT THE ELVES CAN REACH TO WHIS-PER IN YOUR EAR; IT IS TO TURN PUMPKINS INTO COACHES, AND MICE INTO HORSES, FOR EACH CHILD HAS A FAIRY GODMOTHER IN ITS SOUL. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 16 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee January 30, 2014 “I’m not asking people to cleanup my house, but if everyone will clean around where they live, work, and congregate we could clean this city up,” said Ms. Wilkerson. Despite a drizzling rain, participants of the recent city of Belle Glade Cleanup Day are feeling proud of their accomplishment. Almost 190 volunteers from churches, schools and organizations blanketed areas of town in need of a little spif ng up on Saturday, January 4. The day was spearheaded by city of Belle Glade Commissioners, who seemed to have a New Year’s Resolution to see this city litter free. Mayor Steve Wilson, Vice-Mayor Mary Wilkerson, City Manager Lomax Harrelle and Assistant to the City Manager Beverly Scott spent their morning working side-by-side with the youth of our community. They picked up styrofoam cups, cans and other debris along the roadways and in city parks. Their efforts paid off, as Sanitation Director Johnny Gooden reported approximately six tons of trash were collected in just a few hours. “It was very successful,” said Mr. Gooden. “Afterwards, everyone enjoyed a cookout.” The Belle Glade Chamber helped coordinate the event with representatives from the city’s sanitation department and representatives with the Boys & Girls Club. Chamber Beauti cation Chair Ryan Shackelford said another cleanup is scheduled in April, which is the Great American Cleanup Month. It will be held Saturday, April 26. Organizations that helped clean up included the Muck City Browns, St. John’s First Missionary Baptist Church Youth Group, the Sheriff’s Of ce Transportation Team, Alcazar Academy, Palm Glades Girl Scouts, the First Haitian Baptist Church, Boys & Girls Club, Kappa Alpha Psi, the Power Enrichment Team, and Palm Beach County Fire ghters.
