According to witnesses, the man opened re on a group of men after he was asked to leave because he refused to speak with them at a party. The incident happened on Nov. 10 at approximately 1 a.m. at the 715 Mobile Home Park in Belle Glade. A witness reported that Jorge Alfredo Ramirez, 27, arrived uninvited to a family gathering in his red Ford F-150, bringing an 18pack of beer with him. Ramirez PBSO Launches Shot Spotter in Belle GladeBY AMANDA RAMOS-GUY Special to e SunPalm Beach County Sheriff’s Ofce announced earlier this year the launching of its newest tool in the ght against crime in Belle Glade. PBSO partnered with Shot Spotter, the Howard E. Hill Foundation, and Belle Glade residents to make the gun shot alert system available to the area. “Many shootings go unreported because people do not think we care or they fear retaliation,” said Colonel James Stormes. “Many times when shootings are reported, we can’t determine where it happened, if it’s gang involvement, or are not given complete information out of fear of retaliation.” PBSO began exploring their options for the problem in late 2012 and became fully operational on July 26, 2013. “Through grant money and a very generous donation from the Howard E. Hill Foundation, we were able to bring some of the most state of the art technology—gunshot detection technology—to the City of Belle Glade,” said Col. Stormes. They also nest in scattered sites in the eastern United States, including Florida and as far south as the Caribbean islands. The migratory Ruddy Ducks arrive in Florida in September and depart by mid-March. These small, compact ducks have a stout, scoop-shaped bill and a long, stiff tail that they often hold cocked upward. They have a fairly short, thick neck and a slightly peaked head. Males have a blackish cap with bright white cheeks. In the summer months, males have rich chestnut bodies with a bright blue bill; in the winter months, they are gray-brown above and paler below with dull gray bills. The females and rst-year males are brownish and have a blurry strip across their cheek patch. The oldest Ruddy Duck on record lived to be at least 13 years and seven months old. These birds are usually silent. The female makes a nasally sound to call her brood, a high pitched call to ward off unwelcome males, and will hiss when threatened. The male only has one call: a belch-like sound that he makes during courtship displays. In migration, Ruddy Ducks ock to large rivers, ponds or lakes, but they also gather in coastal estuaries. These birds feed mainly at night where they dive to the bottom of shallow ponds, straining mouthfuls of mud through the thin plates on their bills. They swallow the aquatic insects, crustaceans and mollusks that are left behind. They also eat aquatic plants and seeds. During the day, they are often observed sleeping with their head tucked under a wing and tail cocked up. The male courts a female by beating its bill against its neck hard enough to create a swirl of bubbles in the water. These small ducks are very aggressive towards each other and other species during breeding season and have been known to chase rabbits feeding on the shore. The female chooses the nest site where the nest of plant materials is built in the tall vegetation in marshes, ponds or lakes. The nest starts as a platform and becomes more bowlshaped from use. Ruddy Ducks usually weave a canopy of vegetation over their nest. The female lays six to eight creamy white eggs with a pebbly texture. These eggs are "the largest of all duck eggs relative to body size" (Cornell, All about Birds). The eggs are incubated for approximately 23 to 26 days. At birth, the hatchlings are active, welldeveloped and covered with down that is dark above and lighter below. The edglings are capable of ight when they are 43 to 48 days old. Vehicles are one of the biggest investments for any individual, so taking care of them just makes good sense. While regular wear and tear cannot be avoided over time, there are some important steps one can take to keep one's vehicle on the road longer: Wash Cars and Trucks Often Regularly washing one's car or truck may keep one riding in style, but a clean vehicle is not just for appearances. Keeping one's car or truck clean and free of debris and detrimental road salt will prevent rusting and costly repairs down the line. Oil Changes and Filters To protect one's engine, follow the manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals. Instead of conventional oil, consider using high-performance synthetic motor oil designed to reduce wear, heat and fuel consumption. Just like motor oil, not all oil lters are of the same quality - lters can be classi ed as "economy," "better" and "best. Since the oil lter prevents contaminants from circulating through the system and causing damage, opting for a premium oil lter will extend the life of one's vehicle. Smoother Driving The way one drives can affect a vehicle's performance and longevity. Take care to accelerate and decelerate smoothly. Not only will this increase fuel economy, but it will extend the life of the brake pads. Avoid feel-good driving maneuvers, like revving the engine, and try not to drive on a nearly empty gas tank. Neither of these behaviors are good for the engine and could result in costly repairs. By following a maintenance routine and practicing good driving habits, one can extend the life of one's vehicle well after driving it off the lot. How to Extend the Life of a Car or Truck

2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Pastor David Alan McClusky, 60CLEWISTON — Pastor David Alan McClusky, of Clewiston, passed away Nov. 29, 2013 in Loxahatchee. He was born Aug. 20, 1953 in Pontiac, Mich., to the late Danny Denzil and the late Donna Lou (Merchant) McClusky and raised by his grandmother. Pastor McClusky married Lydia L. Leidy, March 17, 1975 at Pontiac, Mich. she survives. Pastor David was an instructor in the 1970s in Michigan with the Emergency Medical Technician Education Program for many years. He and Lydia moved to Florida to make their home, where he worked for Belle Glade Hospital for many years and was currently working for Hendry Regional Medical Center. David was also a pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Clewiston from 2007 to present. He was a CPR instructor in the Clewiston area for many years. Survivors include his loving wife, Lydia L. (Leidy) McClusky; and one son, Thomas and his wife Chelsea of Wake Forrest, North Carolina; and many other family members and close friends. Pastor David was preceded in death by his son, Daniel. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Clewiston with his son, Mr. Thomas McClusky of ciating. Interment will be in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clewiston. Visitation was Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Akin-Davis Funeral Home, Clewiston, FL. Coffey (Ret.), a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, with a distinguished ca reer of public service, died November 26, 2013. Mr. Coffey was born on May 8, 1921, in Missionary Ridge, Georgia. His father, Robert L. Coffey, Sr., had been a successful brick manufacturer, and his mother, Curry Brindley Coffey, once worked as a milliner and would live to be one hundred years old. After his family lost their businesses as a result of the Great Depression, they moved to Johnstown, Pennsylvania where he attended Franklin High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940, hoping to join a cavalry unit, but was instead assigned to the Army Air Corp. He trained in Albuquerque, New Mexico, later in Santa Ana, California, and nally in Sacramento before shipping out to England. His WW II service, lled with patriotism and heroism, saw the anguish of losing friends during combat, as well as various adventures. For example, during one of his weekends on leave, he met and danced with the legendary Shirley Temple. He also learned assorted Irish songs including “The Night That Paddy Murphy Died” which he sang as recently as this past year. He ew 35 B-17 missions over Europe, at a time when the attrition rate was 5%, meaning one in 20 planes would not return from each mission. Midway through his missions, he became lead navigator, so that he led the rest of the formation to its target and back. The size of such formations would vary, but at times it could be more than 40 bombers. The lead plane was inevitably the most exposed. During and after the war, he received various commendations and awards for his service to his country. Tragically, his beloved brothers died in airplane crashes, younger brother, William, during the war, and older brother, Robert, an ace ghter pilot and then a Member of Congress, in 1949. After the war, John Coffey attended the University of Miami where he met Valerie Kendall, his future wife. Following graduation, he married Valerie but was soon recalled to military duty due to the Korean con ict. Joining what had by then become the U.S. Air Force, he served in various important posts, ranging from B-52 crews and the Inspector General’s staff to liaison assignments with the Colombian military in the 1960s. In his nal assignment, he served as the Director of Operations for the United States Air Force in Europe, moving his family to Wiesbaden-Mainz area in what was then West Germany. A position requiring great ability and integrity, given Europe’s vital importance during the Cold War, Lt. Col. Coffey was recognized for his outstanding work: “Lieutenant Colonel John B. Coffey distinguished himself by meritorious service in the performance of outstanding service to the United States while serving in the Deputate of Operations, Headquarters United States Air Forces in Europe from 27 July 1966 through 1 July 1969. During this period, Lieutenant Colonel Coffey’s superior initiative, leadership, and devotion to duty resulted in highly unusual and new approaches to long-standing problems. His diplomacy and tact in dealing with other foreign nationals signi cantly enhance the development of NATO war planning capabilities and their integration and coordination with those of the United States. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Lieutenant Colonel Coffey culminate a distinguished c areer in the service o f his country and re ect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.” During the three years he served as director of the Air Force’s European Operations, he also became close to many in the local community in Mainz, Germany, and was an active member of the St. George Horse Riding and Driving Club. In 1968 and 1969, he was the only American e ver to be named an honorary member of the Mainzer Ranzen Garde, a local society that commemorated public events riding horses in 18th Century c avalry attire and formations. In 1969, he retired and moved with Valerie and their three sons, Christopher, Kendall and Kevin, to Miami, Florida. Following h is retirement, he was an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War and would, over the next four decades, author numerous columns and op ed pieces concerni ng U.S. militar y and foreign policy. A brilliant thinker, who served as President of Miami’s Unitarian Church, he was exceptionally well-informe d about national and world events. In 1974, with his sons moving on to college, he and Valerie moved to Moore Haven, Florida, where they lived toget her for more than three decades at Coffey Farm on U.S. Highway 27. John and Valerie had many wonderful friends in Glades County and were active i n, among man y organizations, the Lions Club which named him “Man of The Year”. During those years, Mr. Coffey continued his dedicated work fo r the public, serving as a Glades County Commissioner for eight years including several years as Chair of the County Commission. An advocate for environmental and other causes, his many accomplishments include leading the successful ght to maintain public access to Fisheating Creek. Coffey Road is named in honor of John and Valerie Coffey. Following a long illness, Valerie Coffey died in 2005. The end of their 57 year love story left him devastated. A subsequent ma rriage to Anne Deuschle was followed by separation. In recent years, he resided in Savannah Court in West Palm Beach, where he enjoyed new friendships and even more adventures, always treasuring the love of his family and friends. Coffey is survived by his three sons, Christopher, Kendall and Kevin; daughters-in-law, Adrianne, Joni and Shelly; and grandchi ldren, Justin, Alexandra (Lexi), Meredith, Aidan, Aubrey and Alaine; and by his great-granddaughter, Sophie Valerie Coupe. Other cherished survivors include his niece, Eileen Maria Coffey-Fernandez, and her family; his nephew, David Coffey, and his family; as well as his in-laws, Mark and Deirdre Quigley. been red and sends the exact location to deputies' laptops within 45 seconds, which dramatically decreases the response time. Lydia Barrett, a Shot Spotter representative, explains that sensors are strategically placed in key areas of the community allowing law enforcement to determine through triangulation where hot spots of activity are located. The technology is capable of distinguishing between gun re, recrackers, vehicle back re. With Shot Spotter, of cers are able to hear incidents as they are happening, determine how many rounds have been red, the frequency of gun re, if the rounds are mobile and what direction they are heading and their rate of speed. Ms. Barrett explains that the shortened response time allows LEOs to have a great chance of catching the suspects eeing the scene or hiding/gathering evidence. Shot Spotter is considered as evidence admissible in court and has been used in over 50 court cases. It has led to two murder convictions in which no witnesses were present. Riviera Beach is the only other city in Palm Beach County with the technology. Belle Glade is the rst city under PBSO's jurisdiction to receive Shot Spotter. "We are very proud of our community and decided to partner with PBSO to eliminate the negative elements of Belle Glade," said Jennifer Earnest, Vice-President of the H. E. Hill Foundation. The foundation donated the funds for the equipment and the annual fee. Because Pahokee and South Bay did not meet the necessary quali cations to justify Shot Spotter, the Hill Foundation donated the necessary funds to install surveillance cameras throughout the cities. In the short time that Shot Spotter has been operational, PBSO reports that it has been activated 43 times; three cases have been cleared, and two arrests have been made. "None of this could have been accomplished without the H.E. Hill Foundation and the support from the City of Belle Glade," said Col. Stormes. The two men spoke for about an hour before the witness excused himself to go to the restroom. When he returned to the party, the witness was approached by some of the men in the group who asked that he kick Ramirez out for not wanting to go over to speak with them. The witness asked Ramirez to explain what was going on, Ramirez responding with, "If you got a problem, deal with it." The witness escorted Ramirez to his truck and Ramirez left. Some time later, the same witness was returning to the location after having left the party, when he saw the red F-150 Ramirez had been driving. Ramirez made a U-turn and came back to where the men were gathered. At this point, according to the witness, Ramirez exited his truck and red his handgun multiple times into the group, hitting two men: Edgar Salinas, 26, was struck in the torso, while Feliciano Hernandez, 23, was shot in the thigh. Family members had attempted to stop Ramirez, but were unable to. Soon after the two men were shot, Ramirez ed from the scene. Hernandez was treated for his wound, but a full recovery for Salinas was less likely Salinas' spine was severed. Detectives were unable to speak with the man, who was intubated and unable to communicate. But two witnesses provided of cials with enough information to arrest Ramirez. They were able to pick him out of a lineup as the person who shot both men. Jorge Alfredo Ramirez is being held in jail on a charge of attempted rst degree murder with a rearm. According to information released by PBSO's vehicle homicide investigations department, the ve men were riding in a 2005 Nissan Altima, traveling west along the inside lane of S.R. 80, headed toward Belle Glade when the accident happened. The driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Phanoir Alcena, drifted off the roadway into the grassy median. In an attempt to get back onto the road, the driver overcorrected, causing the vehicle to rollover multiple times. The report states that the driver and rst passenger were not wearing their seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicle as it was rolling. Alcena and Vladimir Joseph, 20, were both transported to Delray Medical Center for critical injuries. Other passengers included Jean Mommavuis, 18, Estime Moise, 19, and Tracy Ceaser, 20, all from Belle Glade. They reported only minor injuries from the accident.
