With the spike in recent shootings in the Belle Glade area, law enforcement has been pursuing suspects with increased fervor. Their work led to the arrest of three shooting suspects who were wanted in connection with a shooting at the Palm Glades apartment complex last month. Quinton Smith, 18, and brothers Jeremy Lockhart, 15, and Charles Lockhart, 17, face charges of aggravated assault with a rearm and aggravated battery with a rearm. The shooting took place on Oct. 24, at approximately 8:30 p.m. that night at the Palm Glades apartment complex. According to the victim, Artie Neal, who was struck by the gun re and own to Delray Medical Center, three males had shot at him while he meeting with friends at the BY NAJI TOBIAS Special to e SunGlades Day's playoff run is over after it suffered a 24-14 home loss to Hialeah's Champagnat Catholic on Nov. 22. Few thought the Gators (8-4 nal record) had a realistic shot of pulling off an upset win over the Lions (12-0 record; No. 1 in Class 2A). Few people thought that Glades Day (18-point underdog to Champagnat Catholic) would even reach the second round of the Class 2A playoffs. When All-American and recordsetting running back Kelvin Taylor (now a freshman at the University of Florida) and Head Coach Pete Walker (now a head coach at Clewiston High School) left Glades Day earlier this year, many thought the Gators didn't have enough talent to qualify for the postseason. And some even thought the Gators would nish the season with a losing record. The players and coaches chose to ght through the low expectations and to believe in themselves from start to nish. Down by as much as 17 points in the second half, the Gators never had a lead in this one. But they were never out of it either. Senior athlete Jonathan Rodriguez shocked the Champagnat Catholic defense (led by U.S. Army All-American defensive tackle Travonte Valentine) when he red off a 54-yard halfback option pass to junior wide receiver Dillon McMillan, who outran the opposition's secondary en route to the end zone with 10:19 left in the game. With Alberto Garcia's extra point, Glades Day cut Champagnat Catholic's lead to 10. Later in the fourth quarter, the Gators had one more shot to pull off the trick play for a score to cut the Lions' BY NAJI TOBIAS Special to e SunA rash of shootings has gripped the area over the past several weeks. As a result of the rampant violence, the Glades Central High School administration decided to host a specialized panel discussion for its students on the morning of Nov. 22. Orvell Howard, Chairman Karson Turner, Chairman Hendry County Local Planning Agency Hendry County Board of County Commissioners 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 28, 2013 On Thanksgiving Day, 2013BY REV. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ S ai nt M a rt i n s Chu r chI have been with people when good news has arrived: when children were lost but were found safe, when the diagnosis came back negative and no life-threatening illness was found, when someone got the job out of all of the applicants who applied for it, when someone was found innocent ... and on and on. Following the good news was that instinct to say, “Thank God!” and we shared in a prayer that was much different than our previous prayers uttered during moments of fear and concern. This tendency, this instinct follows when there is a realization that things beyond our control, things we feared, no longer need to be feared. I know in my own life, saying “Thank God!” when I become aware that some force, some intervention in this world has worked for me; that somehow God was present and it made all of the difference. I think thanks-giving may be a particularly unique human response. We are a species capable of realizing all that could have gone wrong didn’t go wrong, and we feel compelled to do something in return for the people, situations, God, who were working on our side to see that things turned out all right. That something is all we have to offer at times; our heartfelt appreciation that is acknowledged when we have little or nothing else to offer. It is Jesus who knows He is about to be betrayed, but takes bread and wine ... and gives thanks ... and predicts what will happen to Him (Matthew 26:21ff, Mark 14:17ff, cf. 1 Corinthians 11:23ff). Thanksgiving comes when there is that beginning of worship: we have little to offer to God, it’s all His anyway and He can do with it as He wills. At least, though, we can be thankful, and in our response, show gratitude for what He has shared with us. The acknowledgement before those to whom we are grateful has come spontaneously as we grow in awareness of the bene ts we have received, the blessings and mercy given, the getting better than desired or deserved. Thanksgiving can be an antidote to envy, jealousy, arrogance; the realization that we didn’t earn or deserve or merit but it came anyway. A great Christian writer, Evelyn Underhill, says worship begins when we look around and realize we didn’t do it ourselves and can only respond with adoration and thanksgiving to the One who made it all and makes it all possible. The next step is always doing our part to make someone else a bit more thankful -one of God’s creatures -and taking from our blessings to share with them. I have my favorites: those who may have “fallen through the cracks” and whose needs are not known, or someone who is ineligible for help from institutional charities but are nevertheless in need. Someone pointed out to me something about Church services that he observed. He said our prayers of asking for others or for ourselves are always much longer and a much more prominent part of worship services than our prayers of thanksgiving, or just adoring God for being God. Now comes the day when we can step back and do something a bit more balanced: setting aside time for thanksgiving and remembering before God how fortunate and blessed we really are. I have thought often of those Pilgrims who came to America’s shores in boats that weren’t guaranteed to make it, who gave up their homes and the civilization they knew to face the hardships of life living off the land, surrounded by a culture unknown to them and then ... giving thanks. Can we, can I do any less, with our relative abundance and relative security in comparison to what they faced? Then, I look at what they accomplished and what all of our ancestors did: beginning with their thankfulness and being blessed as they were blessed. It crossed my mind that our many blessings are God’s way of saying, “You’re welcome!” I’ve said that from time to time: it comes after knowing I did something for someone and they appreciated it. Maybe God feels that way too. If you would like to contact Rev. Thomas about this column or have an idea for one, please send an e-mail to fatherthomas@saintmartins-clewiston.org.Community Thanksgiving DinnerCLEWISTON — First United Methodist Church of Clewiston is hosting its annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Nov. 28, beginning at 12 p.m. Come and enjoy a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner with all of the trimmings. Other witnesses interviewed by investigators corroborated Neal’s story. According to two witnesses, at least six friends were hanging out at the location when Neal joined them. Shortly afterwards, the suspects came looking for Neal, and when they found him began ring at him. Neal’s friends darted from the scene as soon as the threat of gun violence appeared. One of the suspects had extended his arm out holding a gun and ring at the victim. Interviewed by investigators, the suspects all denied having been responsible for the shooting, or even having been in the area, although they did say they had heard about it through Facebook and twitter. Throughout the investigation, the suspects continued providing information that was later proved wrong by additional information, such as the retrieval of cell phone records and additional testimony by witnesses. Because some of the witnesses reported failing to clearly observe the suspects, instead saying that they could identify them based on body shape and behavior, the most critical information in the investigation came from one of the witnesses who reported seeing all three men walking together through the apartment complex earlier that day. The information directly nulli es information given to investigators by the three suspects, as well as information by the mother of two of them, who denied being in the area. All three suspects are in jail without bond. Jeremy Lockhart had been previously arrested after being involved in a ght at Glades Central High School. His older brother, Charles, will turn 18 behind bars as he awaits trial. SHOOTINGContinued From Page 1 The American Heart Association brings awareness to the fact that obesity is one of the most expensive health care problems in America. One-third of U.S. children are overweight or obese, putting them at higher risk for heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association is taking a new approach in the ght against childhood obesity through the Teaching Gardens. They have teamed with noted Child Nutrition Activist and Philanthropist Kelly Meyer to create the American Heart Association Teaching Gardens, planted in elementary schools across the country, that become real-life learning laboratories for students to learn what it means to be healthy. Aimed at rst through fth graders, they teach children how to plant seeds, nurture growing plants, harvest produce and ultimately understand the value of good eating habits. Garden-themed lessons teach students nutrition, math, science and other subjects, all while the students have fun in the fresh air and working with their hands. Orvell Howard, Chairman Karson Turner, Chairman Hendry County Local Planning Agency Hendry County Board of County Commissioners 5 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 28, 2013 BY MARGARET ENGLAND H e ndr y G l a d es A u d ubo nThe Great Blue Heron is the tallest North American heron. This majestic longlegged bird stands three to 4.5 feet tall with a wingspan of 5.5 to 6.6 feet. These herons live and breed in coastal and inland Florida. Reports of Great Blue Herons building nests or demonstrating other con rmed breeding behaviors are needed for the Breeding Bird Atlas II (BBAII) Project, which ends in 2016. During the rst surveys 25 years ago, there were very few breeding reports in inland Florida and only a few con rmed nesting reports have been submitted during the current 2011/16 BBA II surveys. This species' nesting season usually lasts from October to May. Great Blue Herons have blue-gray back wings and belly. They have a wide, black strip over their eye and a white crown and face. In ight, they curl their neck in an "S" shape. Immature birds have a black cap and lack the black plume extending from the eye. Their back and upper wings are brownish-gray. On the breeding grounds, adults will greet their partner with squawking "roh-roh-rohs;" other calls include clucking or screaming sounds. Chicks will call "tik-tik-tik" within minutes of hatching. Great Blue Herons are often seen foraging along coastal shorelines, marshes, sloughs, lakes, rivers and backyard ponds, but they will also hunt in grasslands and agricultural elds. These herons forage day or night by wading slowly or standing still while stalking prey. They will quickly thrust their neck and head to stab sh, snakes, insects, small mammals or other birds with their strong bills. These colonial nesters are known for their courtship and pair-bonding displays, which include greetings, stick transfers and nest relief ceremonies. The male chooses the nest site and then attracts a mate. He collects most of the nest material, which he presents to the female who weaves a saucer-shaped nest cup lined with pine needles, moss, reeds, leaves or small twigs. Nest-building can take from three days to two weeks. When the nest is completed, the female will lay three to four pale-blue eggs, which are incubated by both adults for 27 to 29 days. The chicks are covered in pale-gray down. The nestlings are capable of ight at about 60 days of age. The community is invited to join HendryGlades Audubon volunteers for free birding trips to Stormwater Treatment Area 5 (STA-5), located 20 miles south of Clewiston on Nov. 30. Photographers, groups and families are welcome to participate in the escorted trips. Glades Central Principal Anthony Anderson talked about the purpose of this specialized panel discussion, which was the early part of what administrators called the “Day of Peace.” “We felt it was necessary to have the students in one area and discuss all the violence that has happened here in Belle Glade,” Anderson said. “We want them to know that they can come to us for assistance and counseling about this issue. We want our students to make better life decisions for themselves.” The panel discussion, which was part of what the administration dubbed as “White Day,” featured Belle Glade natives Wiley Battle (1972 graduate of Glades Central High School; retired sergeant of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Of ce), Wenfred Dorsey (1986 graduate of Glades Central High School), Dr. Carl Gibbons (1987 graduate of Glades Central High School; current assistant principal at Glades Central), Cathy Seider (1975 graduate of Glades Central; current administrative assistant at Glades Central) and Tony Smith (1989 graduate of Glades Central High School; current Palm Beach Central defensive coordinator). “We’re very blessed to have them speak to our students,” Anderson said. “They are a group of people who grew up here and still have connections to this community. Many of them have walked these streets and got into trouble, but overcame some of the obstacles that our kids face today. They are prime examples of how our students can move above all of that.” Alonzo Rosier, the pastor of Redeeming Word Christian Center in Belle Glade, was rst to speak. The Connecticut-native said he had rst heard about Belle Glade during a special that aired on CBS Network’s “60 Minutes” years ago. “I remember watching the program and it said that Belle Glade was the armpit of America,” Rosier said. “How can it be? I don’t believe you are all that. You are leaders, but it’s going to come down to you making the right choices. Your decisions will determine where you will go in life. Be all that God has called you to be and listen to your instructors. They’re here to help you get on the right path.” Battle, who grew up in a single-parent home and went on to serve in the PBSO for 29 years, was the second person to offer some words of advice for the students. “What you do today will affect you tomorrow,” Battle said. “You don’t want to end up in prison. Everybody is not going to be a professional athlete, a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher or a police of cer. But everybody can be something positive. It’s going to take responsibility and discipline to stay out of prison and have a successful life.” Dorsey, who was the third speaker of the day, had some thought-provoking questions for the students. “Have you ever dreamed about what kind of life you want to have?” Dorsey asked the group. “Have you dreamed of the kind of spouse you want to have? Are you willing to invest in your future so you can have these things? What are you willing to sacri ce in order to reach your goals in life? Are you willing to give up some of your friends in the process? When people pull you over to the side and impart wisdom to you, listen to them. They see something in you that you don’t see in yourself.” Smith was the fourth speaker of the day. “You need to have love for yourself,” said Smith, who shared the story of when he was involved in a Belle Glade gang as a young teenager in the 1980s. “You can make good choices. You can nd a way to get out of the area and make a better life for yourself. You can de ne your legacy by making the right choice.” Seider, the fth speaker, shared her story of how she lost her son to gun violence in 2000. “Life is a precious gift,” the longtime Glades Central administrative assistant said. “You do have a choice. Find something positive to do with your time. Get with positive people and stick with those who have your best interests at heart. When you’re talking to adults, just know that respect goes a long way. I love you and I challenge you to make good, sound choices today.” Dr. Gibbons wrapped up the discussion with a summary. “It takes a panel like this to start change,” he said. “They said some powerful stuff to you all. Hold on to what was presented to you. Hold on to it.” VIOLENCEContinued From Page 1 PHOTO/ NAJI TOBIASThe discussion panel group, which was made possible by Glades Central principal Anthony Anderson and the assistant principal tandem of Mrs. Melanie Bolden-Morris and Dr. Carl Gibbons, shared a moment together before the Nov. 22 even began at Glades Central Community High School. “Tell of My Glory” is a true testimonial from a young lady that has been physically and mentally abused, suffered and survived brutal domestic violence, robbed and escaped a dreadful death from her lover who died at the age 36 from the devastating Aids Virus. She believes to be chosen, to live and overcome multiple adverse ordeals. To see Jesus in his Glory clothed in white, walking slowly, stopping to look at her and telling her to tell of his Glory. She believes she must do just as he has told me to do. Her name is Travella CarpenterBrissett; she was born to Mary R. Hammond and Aston F. Carpenter of Jamaica. She was raised in Belle Glade, FL with her mother and 11 siblings. She attended Glade View, Lake Shore Middle, and Glades Central High School where she graduated. Later she attended Palm Beach Community College where she majored in Human Services. She married Mr. Anthony Brissett and is now the mother of 3 handsome young men, Jamaal Jenkins, Jermaih Jenkins and Aston Samuels. Two of her sons graduated from the University of South Florida with a full football scholarship and the 3rd one is working on his ministry. She is the Grandmother of 5 known to them as G-Mom. In 1999 she was saved and lled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost. She stated “As I live this glorious life for Christ I realize that Jesus is the best things that happen to me. And I will never turn back.” Order the book “Tell of My Glory” online at www.xulonpress.com, www.barnesandnoble. com, or www.amazon.com. Or contact the author herself 561-983-1549. lead to a eld goal. But with 2:05 left from the Champagnat 33-yard line, Rodriguez's second halfback option pass was picked off by senior defensive back Jason Williams at the 7-yard line. It was Glades Day's nal shot at sending Champagnat Catholic home with a playoff loss at Schlecter Field for the third straight season. But in the end, it wasn't meant to be. "Our kids played hard, but we made too many mistakes," Glades Day Head Coach Eric Pitts said of his team, which committed six turnovers (four lost fumbles, two interceptions) in the game. "We put ourselves in a hole and couldn't dig completely out of it, but they fought all the way to the end." Glades Day's other score came with 2:11 left in the rst half, when Rodriguez's 3-yard touchdown run cut Champagnat Catholic's lead to 12-7. The score would stay that way until it was 6:48 left in the third quarter, when Lions sophomore quarterback Kato Nelson (10-of-17 passing, 240 yards, two TD) threw a screen pass to junior wide receiver Steven Claude (four catches, 160 yards, two TD) for what turned out to be a touchdown pass for 80 yards. With an 18-7 lead at that juncture, the Lions were hungry for another score. They got what they wanted with just nine seconds left in the third quarter, when junior running back Michael Frederick raced past the Gators' front seven and secondary for a 16-yard touchdown run that extended the lead to 24-7. It turned out to be the game-winner for Champagnat Catholic, which had a 12-0 lead in the rst half and never looked back from there. "We lost to Glades Day on this eld the last two years," Champagnat Catholic Head Coach Mike Tunsil said. "It left a bad taste in our mouths, so we didn't want to have that kind of experience again. I thought our team played well on both sides of the ball against them." Tunsil credited Glades Day for making this game a competitive one. "With Kelvin Taylor no longer on their team, I knew it was going to be kind of hard for them this season," he said. "But their players have a lot of heart and they have a great coaching staff. You could tell that Coach Pitts knows what he's doing as a head coach. He's doing a good job of keeping the tradition going at Glades Day." With the loss, all three of the area's teams (Glades Central, Glades Day and Pahokee) have been eliminated from the FHSAA playoffs before the Thanksgiving holiday. It is the rst time that has happened in more than 20 years. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Ridge Insurance 863-382-3119 Policies have exclusions and limitations. The units were developed for the Pahokee Housing Authority in Palm Beach County by the South Florida-based Housing Trust Group, a leading affordable housing developer. Palm Beach County, Housing Trust Group and Pahokee Housing Authority held the ribbon cutting at McClure Village on Nov. 6 to celebrate the construction of 16 new housing units and the completion of hurricane hardening improvement at McClure Village. The new houses were beautifully designed by Architect Kimberly Dellastatious, of Lake Worth, and constructed by Lutz Builders, a local contractor. More than $5.1 million in U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Disaster Recovery Initiative and Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds were applied toward the project to repair and replace housing that was severely damaged by the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005. McClure Village serves a critical need for low-income housing in the Glades region. The 85–unit, multifamily rental complex is located at 301 Eisenhower Dr. in Pahokee. During the ceremony, the Pahokee Housing Authority Tenant Association took the time to recognize and honor Victor Atkins (U.S. HUD), Armando Fana (U.S. HUD), Kimberly Dellastatious, P.A., and General Contractor Wally Lutz for making a difference in the city of Pahokee. A special thanks to Victor Atkins and Armando Fana from HUD, Shannon Larolque from Palm Beach County, Edward Lowery from the Department of Economic Sustainability, Elena Adames from Housing Trust Group and all the people that made this project a great success. McClure Village serves a critical need for very low-income housing in the Palm Beach County/ Glades Region, especially for families. A total of ve units were added to the existing development, replacing units damaged due to hurricanes that occurred in 2004 and 2005. The ve units consist of three three-bedroom, two-bath units and two two-bedroom, two-bath units with a total construction value of $1.389 million. Funding for the project came from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Attending the grand opening and ribbon cutting were Randy Rieger, chairman of Housing Trust Group; U.S. Congressman Alcee Hastings; Armando Fana, U.S. Housing and Urban Development; Ed Lowery, director of the PBC Dept. of Economic Sustainability; and Julia Hale, executive director of the Pahokee Housing Authority.
