Played at Schlecter Field, the Gators (8-3) went into halftime with a 3-0 lead, thanks to a 23-yard eld goal made by kicker Alberto Garcia in the second quarter. It seemed as if the game would go either way, but Glades Day turned it up a notch in the third quarter, as Daniel Duncanson (15 carries, 50 yards) scored on a 10-yard run that extended the lead to 9-0. Of cials continue looking into the cases, and have not said whether or not the shootings are connected. According to information released by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Of ce (PBSO), a total of four victims suffering from gunshot wounds were reported between 8:30 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. that night in one freak sequence of events. The rst report saw deputies responding to the area of Southwest Sixth Street and Martin Luther King Blvd. One victim, an adult male, was suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Delray Medical Center in critical condition, with no information provided as to the possible shooter or shooters. The second shooting came about 45 minutes later, near 1516 Northwest Avenue G. Deputies arrived to nd two victims suffering from gunshot wounds, with one of the victims having been shot twice, the other once. One of the passengers in the car was a black male, while additional occupants remain unknown. They were also transported to Delray Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries. The last of the shootings came about 20 minutes later. A man said he was walking to his cousin's house to retrieve his jacket in the 200 block of Southwest Third Street when he was shot. On Nov. 14, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) approved an investment to advance a restoration project in Highlands County that will store water and reduce nutrients and stormwater runoff before it enters Lake Okeechobee. “Expanding water storage and treatment are essential across the entire South Florida ecosystem,” said SFWMD Chairman Daniel O’Keefe. “Each project we move forward brings us closer to attaining bene ts for Lake Okeechobee, the coastal estuaries and our vital communities.” Strategically located in a 19,000-acre watershed northwest of the lake, the project comprises three shallow aboveground impoundments, totaling approximately 1,200 acres. The impoundments will hold stormwater that would otherwise ow directly into canals leading to Lake Okeechobee. The $2 million investment approved today — along with funding by project partners that include the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Istokpoga Marsh Watershed Improvement District, Highlands County and Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services — advances the project to the next step: nal design and construction of the rst impoundment. “This is a continuation of efforts by the Department and the South Florida Water Management District to restore Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades with the support of Governor Scott,” said DEP Secretary Herschel T. Vinyard Jr. “Additional water storage and cleaner water are critical to the restoration of Lake Okeechobee.” At 308 acres lled 3.5 feet deep, the rst impoundment will hold approximately 900 acre-feet of water. This is equivalent to about 450 Olympic-size swimming pools, or about 100 American football elds without end zones, covered with nine feet of water. Scienti c study and computer modeling have shown the project, combined with the use of best management practices on local farms, could reduce 70 percent of the phosphorus and 60 percent of the local stormwater runoff owing into the Harney Pond Canal, which ows into Lake Okeechobee and ultimately the Everglades. By storing and treating water bound for the lake, the project helps meet key objectives of the Northern Everglades and Estuaries Protection Program. The program is designed to improve the quality, quantity, timing and distribution of water into Lake Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie watersheds by building on and consolidating numerous restoration efforts into a broader approach focused on restoring the entire Northern Everglades system. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 21, 2013 SFWMD Boosts Water Storage Project North of Lake OkeechobeeRestoration site will store and treat stormwater runoff before it enters the big lake Plan a hike or camping trip at Fisheating Creek in Palmdale with the Fisheating Creek Florida Trail Sub-Chapter. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 4 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 21, 2013 Nov. 8 marked 25 years since the voters of Palm Beach County approved a referendum to establish a health care district “...to provide a source of funding for indigent and medically needy residents and to maximize the health and well being of Palm Beach County residents by providing comprehensive planning, funding, and coordination of health care service delivery.” More than two decades later, the Health Care District of Palm Beach County has matured into a model safety net system for innovative health care delivery. “The Health Care District was launched with a challenging and noble mission,” said Carol A. Roberts, chair of the Health Care District Board of Commissioners. “Over the last 25 years, we are proud to have partnered with public and private community providers and organizations to build a strong safety net that ensures access to quality health care services for thousands of Palm Beach County residents.” Since 1991, Palm Beach County’s nationally recognized Trauma System has provided life-saving care to more than 3,000 people a year who suffer traumatic injuries. To date, more than 54,000 people have bene tted from this integrated system of care funded and overseen by the Health Care District, which includes two Trauma Centers and the Health Care District’s two Trauma Hawk aeromedical helicopters. In 1993, the Health Care District began offering health coverage plans for eligible residents who cannot afford private health insurance and who don’t qualify for other government health care programs. For more than 15 years, over 200 school nurses have staffed health rooms in 167 schools in Palm Beach County, caring for 174,000 students each year. Residents of rural, western Palm Beach County receive quality health care services at Lakeside Medical Center, the only acute-care hospital in the Glades agricultural region. The Health Care District operates the Edward J. Healey Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Riviera Beach, which provides skilled nursing and rehabilitation for residents who need 24-hour care as a result of debilitating illness or traumatic injury. This year, the Health Care District began providing adult and pediatric services at the C. L. Brumback Primary Care Clinics located in four Florida Health Palm Beach County (formerly the Palm Beach County Health Department) health centers in Belle Glade, Lantana, Delray Beach and West Palm Beach. “The Health Care District’s mission from the beginning has been to ll gaps in community health care without duplicating programs offered at the state and federal levels,” said Ronald J. Wiewora, MD, MPH, the Health Care District’s chief executive of cer and chief medical of cer. “Now, 25 years later, we are proud to say that the Health Care District has evolved into a unique safety net system that bene ts Palm Beach County residents of all ages and from all walks of life.” The Health Care District is governed by a volunteer seven-member Board of Commissioners. Board members include Carol A. Roberts, chair; Philip H. Ward III, vicechair; Brian R. Lohmann, secretary; Nancy C. Banner, Esq.; Delray Beach City Commissioner Angeleta Gray; Leslie B. Daniels; and Alina M. Alonso, MD, the director of Florida Health Palm Beach County. The Health Care District Board is responsible for governing a complex organization with more than 1,000 employees. The Health Care District’s annual budget is supported by property tax revenue, grants and other program revenue. This compares with the national average that has increased 1.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.21/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 9.9 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 9.2 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 16.3 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 22.5 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. “Surprisingly, the decreases we’ve seen in the national average have all but dried up,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “I admit, it’s a bit of a head scratcher to have seen wholesale gasoline prices perk up last week, and it’s a bit premature to say we’ve seen the end of decreases in gas prices for the time being, so I’m hopeful that an uptick in the national average is merely temporary, but then again, this year has featured trends in prices that have all been earlier than expected,” DeHaan said. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 James Daniel (J.D.) Steadman, 71CLEWISTON — James Daniel (J.D.) Steadman was born to Mary Holley Oswalt and James Henry Steadman, Jr. on Nov. 8, 1942, and spent much of his childhood with his paternal grandparents in Melbourne, Fla. He dearly loved his Big Mama and Papa and credited them with his appreciation for the simple things in life. When they passed away, J.D. (then 12 years old) went to live with his Aunt Frances and Uncle Glen Neal. This meant a move to Clewiston, Fla., a town that he considered home until the day that he died on Nov. 14, 2013. J.D. attended Clewiston High School, but preferred work as a welder, metal fabricator, and mechanic in his uncle’s shop and at Shawnee Farms. He married Patricia Ruth Owens (known by her initials ‘PRO’) on Nov. 20, 1964, and by 1972, J.D. and Pro had ve children. J.D. worked on the U.S. Sugar Corporation railroad and at the PMS machine shop for over 17 years. In addition, he operated J.D.’s wrecker service and machine shop, and welded for Hilliard Brothers and others. In the early 1980s, J.D. received a commercial haul seine permit for Lake Okeechobee and began his career as a commercial shing captain, which he remained until the time of his death. J.D. often commented that, although smooth sailing was rare, he enjoyed the tranquility of the sunrise from aboard a boat on Lake Okeechobee. J.D. loved to hunt, anything camou age intrigued him like a sh drawn to a shiny lure. He enjoyed hunting dove and quail with his bird dogs, and in the 1970s and early 80s, when the Hendry County Hunting Area was open, his family could be found there nearly every weekend, along with the Owens, Belcher, Kelley, Jones, and Story families. J.D. also enjoyed salt-water shing and scuba diving. Nonetheless, deer hunting was one of his passions, and he would travel to Alabama and Mississippi each year to deer hunt while visiting with family. While in Clewiston, J.D. could usually be found getting his morning coffee, enjoying food and company at Dixie Fried Chicken, shopping at the pawn shop, tinkering with engines, or shing in a canal somewhere. While a Christian and a believer for most of his life, his faith was often tested. During his wife’s battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, J.D. re-committed to his walk with the Lord while attending the Clewiston Church of God. He later joined the Pioneer Baptist Church and enjoyed the ministry of Pedro Cabrera and his church family. J.D. was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Diane and Della; two brothers, Bob Jones and Buddy Oswalt; and his wife, Patricia. In addition to four great-grandchildren; and 17 grandchildren, J.D. is survived by two sisters, Barbara and Mary Jo, of Ga.; a much-loved companion, Vicki Snow of Oakbrook, LaBelle; six daughters, Elizabeth Boykin and Andrea Snow, both of Clewiston, Julie Sexton (Kyle) of Starkville, Miss., Lara Romero (Elmer) of Maryville, Tenn., and Catrena Steadman (Carl) of Bronson, Fla.; two sons, James “Jaybo” Steadman, Jr. (Penny) of Eufaula, Ala., and Roger Snow of Northport, Fla. The family requests that donations made in his honor be sent to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. One of J.D.’s granddaughters, Jolene Sexton, has been treated for pediatric cancer there for over ve years now. During a visit to St. Jude, J.D. remembered the heavenly cartoon published at Danny Thomas’ (hospital founder) death titled “Make Room for Danny!” Based on the honest and humble life that J.D. lived and the trials that he prayerfully overcame, heaven should likely “Make Room for JD!” as well. Visitation was held on Nov. 18, 2013 at the Akin-Davis Funeral Home. Services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013 at the Evangel Assembly of God church, with guest pastor Pedro Cabrera of ciating. Friends and family attended a gathering in J.D.’s honor at the Pioneer Community Center, after burial services were complete. Arrangements by Akin Davis Funeral Home. Marjorie Pauline (Hand) Martin, 80 CLEWISTON — Marjorie Pauline (Hand) Martin passed away on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at the Palm Terrace nursing home in Clewiston, Fla. Her siblings were Imogene Hand Bryant (deceased), Homer J. Hand o f Belle Glade, and Mona Rader of Clewiston. Mrs. Martin was a retired banker, having been employed by the First Bank of Clewiston for man y years, gladly serving its patrons. She was active in the Clewiston community and several civic organizations; however, most signi cant to her was the Community Presbyterian Church with which she was af liated for many years and whose members she counted as part of her family. But creating holiday desserts that stand out doesn’t have to be a daunting prospect. There are simple things you can do to give treats air, without spending hours slaving away. Whipped topping makes a perfect fuss-free topping on special occasion pies, cakes and cookies, as well as your everyday favorites like fruit, coffee and ice cream. Your family and guests will taste the difference, so be sure to use natural ingredients. For example, Reddi-wip is made from real dairy cream, unlike other leading brands which have hydrogenated oils as their top ingredient. To deliciously top off your holiday meal, try this recipe for Apple Crumble Pie, where warm apple pie lling is topped with a brown sugar and oat crumble and served in a aky pie crust. Want to save even more time? Consider picking up a frozen dessert pie, such as one from Marie Callender’s and top it off with Reddi-wip for a quicker, but still super tasty, dessert option. Ingredients 1 frozen pie crust (9-inch), thawed 1 can (21 oz each) apple pie lling 1/2 cup all-purpose our 1/2 cup quick-cooking rolled oats 1/2 cup rmly packed brown sugar 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 cup cold Parkay Original-stick (1/2 cup = 1 stick) Reddi-wip Original Dairy Whipped Topping Directions Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Pierce bottom and side of pie crust lightly with fork. Bake 5 to 7 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool slightly. Reduce oven temperature to 400 degrees F. Pour pie lling into baked pie crust; set aside. Mix our, oats, sugar, cinnamon and salt in medium bowl. Cut in Parkay with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Don’t be a Thanksgiving TurkeyBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchI’ve been called a turkey before. No one wants to be a turkey. Being called a turkey takes on an even deeper meaning when you realize the fact that commercially grown turkeys aren’t one of nature’s most intelligent creatures. As a matter of fact, the domesticated turkey has been described as being “as brainless as a baseball.” Even drinking can put a strain on turkey intelligence. Many aren’t smart enough to close their mouths in the rain. If a turkey is outside looking up to the sky in a heavy rain, it can drown. No one wants to be a turkey. At least the turkey has an excuse for being “bird-brained.” There is less excuse for us human beings. Take the nine lepers Luke writes about in Luke 17. Jesus had healed them from a disgusting, painful and unsightly skin disease. It was a tremendous gift that made it possible for them to re-enter society and reunite with their families. Ten lepers were healed. But only one leper came back and said, “Thanks.” Talk about turkeys! Ten received God’s blessing, but only one stopped to say thanks. Thanksgiving is upon us! Although many countries and cultures have some type of ceremony for celebrating their blessings, no one celebrates Thanksgiving quite the way we do in the U.S. -and for good reason. Few people on earth have as much for which to be thankful. Thanksgiving is the start of the season of giving thanks and sharing with others the blessings we have. I’m reminded of a story I heard about the time the King of Masselbutania came to America for an operation. His American surgeon was accustomed to setting his fee on a sliding scale according to what a patient could pay. A wealthy person paid the full price. If a person was poor, he paid almost nothing. But the surgeon couldn’t decide how much to charge the king. Should it be free because he was the king, or should it be signi cant because he was the king? After all, a king is a king. Upon a whim, the surgeon sought out the king’s attorney, who shared, “The king is an honorable man. Like you, he understands value. My advice to you is to simply send him an invoice with no amount indicated and then add a handwritten footnote saying, ‘The king can do no wrong.’” The surgeon did so, and a check came back for $250,000. The surgeon was ecstatic. He sent his wife on a no-holds-barred shopping spree, ordered a new car and left on an extended cruise. He arrived home, happy and refreshed, but with very little left in his banking account. When he opened his mail, he found a bill from the king’s lawyer. It had no amount written in, but there was a handwritten note saying, “The honorable Doctor can do no wrong.” Thanks-Giving is the time of year when we are encouraged not only to take a moment to count our many blessings, but to give thanks to our God who has helped us make it through the hardships, losses and struggles that we have faced this year. God sends no bills for this. No statement of our account with God is going to show up in our mailbox. God does not look over our shoulders as we reach into our wallets or purses to see what we might give for Him. God does, however, trust each of us and God trusts us as a church and as a faithful community to provide and care for His ministry and the world around us. He waits for our response. Don’t be a Thanksgiving Turkey! Remember, “The Honorable Giver can do no wrong.”New Church in ClewistonCOMMUNITY CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF CLEWISTONCLEWISTON — On Oct. 6, the congregation of First Christian Church of Clewiston voted to re-charter under the new name of Community Christian Church of Clewiston. Every year, the Palm Beach County School District and the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center (DHCAC) celebrate the season with the Festival of the Trees. Local businesses and schools are invited to decorate a tree, which will be on display in the lobby of the theater throughout the month of December. Patrons of the DHCAC bid on the trees and the proceeds of this auction are earmarked to fund educational programs for local students. It is also tradition for the Gove Elementary Art Club to participate in this annual event. This year, our student artists created felt ornaments, which they hand-stitched and beaded to decorate our tree. Look for our Gove Elementary tree and support the arts in our community. The CDC is the rst federal agency to attain full accreditation of its emergency management program. “CDC’s emergency management program has seen the nation through u emergencies, multi-state foodborne outbreaks, hurricanes and more,” said CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. “CDC is the rst federal agency to attain full accreditation of its emergency management program.” Accreditation means a program has completed the six-step EMAP process, including a self-assessment, an on-site appraisal and a committee review. The on-site assessment and follow-up report includes a summary of compliance against 64 EMAP standards set out in the Emergency Management Standard. Included in the EMAP standards are program management; administration and nance; laws and authorities; operational planning; exercises, evaluations and corrective action; and crisis communication, public education and information. “Accreditation is a serious accomplishment for CDC and the emergency management community we support,” said Ali S. Khan, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Of ce of Public Health Preparedness and Response. “Preparing for and responding to emergencies of any kind – natural disasters, bioterrorism events, chemical terrorism or pandemics – is a core function of public health. Everyone at CDC has a hand, at one point in time, in emergency management and execution.” Since 1997, EMAP’s independent assessors and program review committee evaluates local, state and national emergency management programs to ensure they meet nationally set standards for emergency management, and promote consistent quality of emergency management programs. The cost of accreditation is $50,000 and is valid for ve years. In the United States, 31 states, the District of Columbia, and 14 cities and counties are accredited. Lieutenant Ed Luty, the watch commander for the city of Belle Glade, explained that Deputy Longchamps has demonstrated a vested interest in the Glades. “He is one of my hardest working deputies and truly has a heart for the community he serves,” he said. “He speci cally requested to work out here even though he has a two-hour commute each day because he knows he makes a difference.” SportsContinued From Page 1 DeputyContinued From Page 1 For the convenience of patients, the C. Their normal northern range reaches the United States in south Texas and southern Arizona. Their winters are usually spent in Mexico, or as far south as South America, but they will wander widely and are found occasionally in Florida. This medium-sized songbird has a long, dark, forked tail and a fairly large bill. Their wingspan is nearly four-and-three-quarter inches wide. Its head is pale gray with contrasting darker cheeks and a patch of reddish orange on its crown. It has grayish-olive upperparts, a pale throat, darker upper breast and a bright yellow lower breast. Tropical Kingbird’s plumage is not greatly affected by seasonal change. Juvenile Tropical Kingbirds’ upperparts are more brown than those of an adult Kingbird; juveniles also have paler edges on their wings. Tropical Kingbirds are similar in appearance to Couch’s Kingbirds, but can be distinguished by their call. Tropical Kingbirds communicate primarily through vocalizations and will make a high-pitched twittered trill throughout the day. They sing a song known as the Dawn Song, which they will start before sunrise, before most birds begin to sing. The Dawn Song is not repeated until the next morning. Tropical Kingbirds prefer living near open woodlands in close proximity to a pond or owing stream, avoiding densely forested areas. Their diet consists mainly of ying insects. Its fruit diet consists of seeded fruits and berries. Tropical Kingbirds’ timing for nesting varies from place to place. Their nest is an open cup, usually located on a horizontal branch in the mid-story or canopy of a tree. The male may show aggressive behavior when defending its territory during the breeding season. The breeding pair only has one brood per season. The female lays a clutch of two to four buff-colored eggs in one or two days, which she incubates for 15 to 16 days. Both the male and female feed the nestlings insects and berries. These young birds edge when they are about 18 or 19 days old, however, the parents will continue to feed the young for at least another two weeks. Wintering songbirds are returning to inland Florida. They are most active in the early morning, but can be observed foraging throughout most of the day. A solitary Tropical Kingbird returned to STA-5, located 27 miles south of Clewiston, for the second year last month. Scissor-tailed Flycatchers and Kingbirds have returned to County Road 835 near Deer Fence Road, about three to four miles north of the C.R. 835/833 intersection in Hendry County. Local birds, including juvenile Snail Kites, are being observed near Lake Okeechobee and inland wetlands. Walking or bicycling access is available during daylight hours at STA-5 Friday, Saturday and Monday from the last week in November through the rst week in February. Check the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail website for directions to birding hotspots in inland Florida.
