BY NAJI TOBIAS Special to e SunVincent Smith and Brandin Hawthorne have always wanted to give back to their hometown. Less than a year after graduating from the University of Michigan, the former Pahokee football standouts came up with a plan to erect a community garden for the city’s residents. With assistance from the Pahokee Housing Authority (PHA) and the Pahokee Deliverance Christian Center (PDCC), Smith and Hawthorne began their special project in August and have made signi cant progress over the past several weeks. “We want to provide our community with fresh fruits and vegetables,” Smith said. “We want to do something positive for our people and provide them with a healthy opportunity.” So far, the tandem has planted an assortment of sun ower seeds, plantains and sugar cane in the garden, which is located on a lot between the PHA and PDCC facilities. The creation can be viewed by taking a ride through South Lake Avenue in the BY AMANDA RAMOS-GUY Special to the SunPalm Beach County Sheriff’s Ofce (PBSO) of cials met with Pahokee residents on Sept. 25 in a town hall meeting to discuss the growing concern of violence and the department’s lack of concern and commitment for the area. Residents were concerned that crime is becoming a daily occurrence, but Chief Deputy Michael Gauger said, according to their statistics, crime is actually down. He explained that from January to September 2008, they received over 14,500 calls with 1,357 of those calls being crime-related. The yearto-date calls were around 18,000 with only 657 of them being crime related, which translates to a 52 percent decrease in the city’s crime rate. “We have a long ways to go, but the Pahokee we have today has taken a lot of work,” said Major Tony Araujo. Lieutenant Rey Alonso echoed the Chief’s statistics and reports that the city has seen only two robberies in 2013, as opposed to the 25 in 2008. “Year-to-date we have had three, possibly four, homicides,” he said. “One murder is too many; three is BY NAJI TOBIAS Special to e SunGlades Day has been surprisingly good this season. Without All-American running back Kelvin Taylor (now a freshman at the University of Florida) and head coach Pete Walker (now at Clewiston High School), it was supposed to be a down year for the Gators. There was even talk that the seven-time state champions would not even make the playoffs this season. After ve games played, Glades Day has proven its doubters wrong and is the Muck’s only undefeated high school football team at 5-0. On Friday, Sept. 27, Glades Day put on a defensive performance to remember against Agape Christian (Orlando) in its 26-6 home win, limiting the opposition to a total of three yards. How did that happen? Glades Day limited Agape Christian quarterback Cameron Stroud to three-of-six passing for 41 yards and a nine-yard touchdown run in the third quarter -the Gators were up 21-6 at that point -while Agape’s Jarvis Voles went two-of-seven passing for six yards. Glades Day’s front seven completely locked down Agape Christian’s running game, as the Orlando team nished with -47 yards on the ground. “Anytime you hold a team to just three yards, you have to be proud of it,” Glades Day Head Coach Eric Pitts said. “It doesn’t happen very often.” Glades Day junior linebacker Titus Johnson recovered a fumble at the Agape 10-yard run and ran it in for a touchdown, which gave his team a 7-0 lead in the rst quarter. The Palm Beach County Planning, Zoning and Building (PZB) Department is making it easier for construction contractors to do business throughout Palm Beach County. Currently, contractors must enroll with the county to work in unincorporated areas. They must also enroll with individual municipalities to work in incorporated areas. That’s a lot of time and paperwork and could also mean a lot of money. To speed things up, contractors who enroll with Palm Beach County will now have their information available to participating municipalities without having to re-enroll. Member cities have the option of accessing the information through the county’s website, or they can employ an automated process to obtain information. Initially, 12 municipalities are taking part in the program, and others are expected to sign on soon. For details, please call the Palm Beach County Contractors Certi cation Division at 561233-5525.Attention HuntersThe Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission would like to announce that they will be issuing permits for two wild hog control hunts on Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area, west of U.S. 27, to residents of Glades and Hendry counties. Now, thanks to the recent award of $500,000 in federal funding by the Board of County Commissioners, major renovations can get underway. The rehabilitation project was selected to receive U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development HOME Investment Partnerships Program loan nancing through a competitive bid process issued by the Department of Economic Sustainability. The owner, manager and developer of the project was NOAH Development Corp., a nonpro t organization with a 25-year history of helping to provide decent, affordable rental homes to low-income residents of Belle Glade, including residents with special needs, farm workers and the elderly. Cash ow from rents has diminished over recent years, limiting NOAH’s ability to undertake maintenance and repairs. As a result, more than 80 units at Covenant Villas are now vacant. This funding will enable NOAH to reconstruct the dilapidated units and get them rented, which will increase cash reserves and enable NOAH to make the remaining needed repairs. “Safe and decent affordable housing is particularly critical for the Glades, which suffers from high poverty and unemployment,” said District 6 County Commissioner Jess Santamaria. “This project furthers the county’s commitment to improve housing conditions and overall quality of life issues.” Covenant Villas

During the month of July, members of the Elks Lodge joined together to work on a community project instead of taking a vacation. It was their duty as Elks Lodge members to do community service projects, and they decided to make some repairs on a special someone’s house just down the road from the Lodge. This special person was Mrs. Mavis Waldon. For those who do not know her, Mrs. Mavis has lived in Belle Glade for 49 years. She is a wellknown member of the Belle Glade Church of God, regularly attending the church for 42 years. Mrs. Mavis has been a Sunday school teacher in the past and was also a lady’s minister president of the church. When speaking with Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge #1716 David Key, he explained why the Lodge chose Mrs. Mavis as a recipient of its project. “We chose Mrs. Mavis as a recipient of our community project because she has given herself to her church and community for numerous years, and we felt she deserved to be given back to by her community and that is what we are here for,” said Mr. Key. The members have been making repairs to the whole outside of her house. They have paved her driveway and walkway, making it level with her porch, xed the railings on her front porch., and repaired the front and back door. The last two steps of the project were the “beauty steps,” by pressure cleaning and painting the entire house. Sitting down with Mrs. Mavis and chatting about the project, she repeatedly said, “I appreciate what they have done with all my heart.” Mrs. Waldon also said the Elks members made her life more comfortable inside and out, stating, “They really and truly lived out Jesus’s command to ‘love thy neighbor.’” Though she may not know all of the people who helped repair her home, she said she does know one thing: that they have worked really hard and did the repairs that were needed. She said they made her house safe to live in once again. After questioning why they chose her and expressing her appreciation, Mrs. Mavis left with one last statement, “God’s been good to me. He used good people like them to show his love for me.” Elks Care, Elks Share SUBMITTED PHOTOPictured above are the members of the Elks Lodge. Denise recently returned from New York City where she was one of the many representatives of the NIKE Cooperation to work at the U.S. Tennis Open in Flushing Meadows, New York. She worked with other NIKE representatives from across the United States selling NIKE products. In the second quarter, Johnson blocked a punt and returned it ve yards for a score that extended the lead to 14-0. "Titus had a nice game for us," Pitts said. "Everything went right for him." Other than a 17-yard touchdown pass from Gators quarterback Justin Sager (six-of-eight passing, 75 yards, TD) to fullback Jonathan Leon later in the second quarter, there wasn't much offense from either team. Glades Day, which went into halftime with a 21-0 lead, nished the game with 119 yards on offense. "Our defense and special team played well, but we need to get better blocking on our offensive line," Pitts said. "Turnovers won the game for us." Glades Day, which added a 32-yard eld goal in the fourth quarter from Alberto Garcia, failed to score on two red-zone opportunities. The home team also lost a fumble and missed a eld goal in the game. Regardless of that, Glades Day will go into its bye week with an undefeated record and a playoff berth already clinched. Students watched the animated book, “The Dot,” by artist, author and software developer, Peter H. Reynolds. Students also created their very own dot using washable markers and coffee lters. The dot they created was a reminder of their commitment to use their education to make a difference in the world. Students ate DOTS candy, learned a quick research skill -how to use SweetSearch (www.sweetsearch.com) to search for academic and credible web-based resources -and, for fun, were introduced to a new, free App, a game that can remind them every time they play of their commitment to make a mark on their world: http://weplaydots.com/. Students also Skyped with a school in Maine to share how they celebrated International Dot Day across the miles, and some were videoed answering the question, “How will you use your education to ‘make your mark’ on the world?” Elizabeth Zdrodowski will be putting together a compilation video to share with all of you. PHA Director Julia Hale has also played an integral role in the project, as she and her organization helped them go through the proper channels in order to gain approval for the movement’s launch. Urban GreenWorks, a planting company based in Miami, provided the plants for the garden and has worked closely with Smith and Hawthorne in their endeavor. “We have a lot of agriculture in our area, so it just made sense to team up with a company that has experience in building community gardens,” Smith said. Urban GreenWorks provides environmental projects and food security programming to a variety of communities in South Florida, including Liberty City, Little Haiti and Opa Locka in Miami. The Pahokee community garden is the rst of its kind in Palm Beach County. “The concept of this program is for the community to become a food producer,” said James Jiler, executive director for Urban GreenWorks. “This is a model of how much food you can develop in a small space. Organic foods are considered to be expensive to purchase, but with the fertile soil this area has, it can be developed here. It’s the rst time we’ve taken our work from the city to a rural area. We’re looking forward to help make it a success.” A host of trees, shrubs and tropical foods will be grown over a period of time, according to Jiler. “The community is going to be the ones who build it and take care of it,” Jiler said. “If this one works out, then we can see a garden of this magnitude being produced in another part of Pahokee or even Belle Glade.” Pahokee City Commissioner Diane Walker has also been a solid supporter of the community garden project. “It’s awesome that they came back home to provide some social services to our citizens,” Walker said. “It’s refreshing to see a group of young men taking the time out of their schedules to care for the community. They should be commended for venturing out to make the city of Pahokee a better place.” The community garden project is ongoing, and will continue with a series of planting and gate-painting opportunities that will be available to students from Canal Point Elementary, Pahokee Elementary, Pahokee Middle School and Pahokee High School in the near future. crazy. Someone knows who committed these crimes.” Some residents voiced concerns that deputies are addressing them with a tone of arrogance when interacting with the public in traf c stops or calls. The residents felt that because the deputies are from the coast they do not seem to appreciate the lifestyle or circumstances of the Glades and asked of cials to be more diligent about hiring local of cers. Lt. Alonso stated that PBSO makes every effort to hire of cers from the Glades and the ofcers that are in Pahokee are there because they have chosen to be assigned to the area. “Out of 12 deputies, only three have ever left. One became a pilot, another for medical reasons and the last for training because there was not enough crime here for him to train. ... The rest are here because they want to be and are very involved in the community,” said Lt. Alonso, pointing out an off-duty deputy who requested permission to attend the meeting after work hours. Major Araujo also assured the residents that the of cers want to be in the city of Pahokee and that many of them are involved in various community projects. “I have seen them tear up because they have heard people say they don’t care about the community,” said Major Araujo. One resident, Cindy Anderson, told of her recent interaction with PBSO’s deputies. Ms. Anderson and her daughter were returning home one night and saw a woman handing items to a male from an abandoned home. Although deputies responded to the call, they could not properly handle the situation because they could not determine whose property the home was. After much investigation, it was determined that the home was bank-owned and the suspects were arrested and pled guilty to burglary. Ms. Anderson explained that the woman began making harassing statements and gestures towards her when she saw her around town. Ms. Anderson informed a deputy who quickly resolved the matter by informing the woman that harassing witnesses was a crime and she would be arrested if any further incidents occurred. Lt. Alonso requested the residents become more involved with the deputies and in the community. He assured them that he would address many of their concerns and asked them to come forward with tips in unsolved cases. “We will be addressing the loitering complaints and stepping up patrols for the business owners,” said Lt. Alonso. “We are committed to the community. We are here to stay.” 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 12 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee October 3, 2013 Palm Beach County’s Of ce of Community Revitalization (OCR) is proud to once again offer the Resident Education to Action Program (REAP), a ve-week, hands-on educational program providing community revitalization and civic leadership development training.
