T M V. N. Arrestspage 18 Arrests BY JOSE JESUS ZARAGOZA e SunAfter being removed from of ce by Governor Rick Scott, two South Bay commissioners are hoping that the governor's actions can be undone in an upcoming election. Commissioners John Wilson and Shirley Walker-Turner have quali ed to run in an election that became necessary after their seats became vacant in December. That's when accusations brought to light by the State Attorney's Of ce caught the attention of Mr. Scott, who in an executive ruling suspended the two commissioners, along with Commissioner Linda Johnson, for an inde nite amount of time. The commissioners were accused of violating open records laws, when they approved a payout to the former city manager, Corey Alston. City staff is now awaiting word from the governor's of ce regarding whether or not the two commissioners can participate in the special election at all. "They cannot be involved in city issues, but they still can run," explained South Bay City Clerk Jessica Figueroa, whose of ce oversees the election. Ms. Figueroa explained that the issue remains a sensitive one, with city hall reaching out to the governor's of ce for clari cation or a nal ruling. Apart from the question of eligibility for the suspended commissioners, there is an issue regarding how long the terms will last. According to Ms. Figueroa, the open seats could be for a term of six months or one year, again, depending on the governor's ruling. In the meantime, both Commissioners Shirley Walker-Turner and John Wilson are campaigning, with re-election signs featured prominently in South Bay. They are hoping to defeat challengers to their seats. Main Street LaBelle, FL 33935 863-675-0761 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 2, 2013 B Y MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonBlack-and-white Warblers are a migratory species that breed from April to June in the northern and eastern United States, Newfoundland and Canada. These birds do not normally breed in Florida. They have an extensive winter range that extends from Florida to Venezuela and Colombia. This species is one of the earliest warblers to arrive and leave their wintering grounds. This small black and white striped warbler is easy to identify. The male has strongly contrasting black-and-white stripes on its head and under parts. It has black wings with two white wingbars, a white eye stripe, and white eyering. The legs, lores, ear patch, and throat are black. The underparts have bold black streaks. The adult female is striped on the crown and under parts with a moderate contrast between black and white. Its cheeks, chin and throat are dull white or gray. The under parts are mostly white, with gray streaks. Juveniles have plumage similar to the adult female. Black-and-white warblers have an unusually long hind toe and claw on each foot, which allows them to move up and down securely in any direction on tree bark. Its song is a series of very high, two–syllable phrases, resembling the sound of a squeaky wheel, “wee-see-wee-see-wee-see”. Their call is a sharp “stick” and their ight call a high hissing “fsss”. During the winter, they are found in a variety of habitats, but they breed in mature and mixed forests. The old name for this species was the “Black-andwhite Creeper,” because they creep along larger branches in search of insects which they pick out of crevices or under the bark with their long thin bill. They also glean from leaves. Their diet consists of caterpillars, adult insects and spiders. For a warbler, they are unusually aggressive and will sometimes attack other bird species. Black-and-white Warblers build their nests on the ground at the base of a tree or stump. This nest is an open cup of dry leaves, grass, bark, and pine needles. It is lined with ne grasses, horsehair, down, or moss. The female lays four to six white eggs, which are speckled with brown and light purple. She incubates the eggs until they hatch in 10 to 12 days. Both adults feed the young. The young birds leave the nest in eight to 12 days. They are unable to y, but use their wings to scurry across the ground. Inland Birding Fun: Black-and-White Warbler (BAWW) PHOTO/ KENNETH COLEBlack and White Warbler

Family And Roots; Personally, Nationally, SpirituallyBY REVEREND SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins Church, ClewistonThe countryside was dotted with old farmhouses in the region where I began my rst ministry. Often in the corners of the grounds, you could see a single-wide or double-wide mobile home, equipped with a swing-set, a wading pool, or a slide in the nearby yard. Other buildings also dotted the property: sheds, a barn, a shop. Directions were usually given in terms of local landmarks: turn left when you see the mailbox with the owers painted on it, where the asphalt road becomes gravel and you can see the yellow house in the distance. People had practical solutions to their lives: x it if it's broken, save discarded things because they may be useful in the future, buy a big pump for the well, not just the smallest one to do the job. On my rst trip to Europe, I looked up my family name in the local phone book and called around. Most people were polite but not interested in meeting me. One young man spoke of hearing from his grandfather about an uncle, who went to the U.S. The young man was going to visit his grandfather that weekend and asked if I would like to go? Of course! A few days later, I wound up in the countryside, where a box of old letters tied with string were taken from a dusty closet. No, this was not the grandfather of my family, but we must be related somehow. It was from this farmhouse in the countrysidewith knob-and-tube electrical wiring, where cooking was done on a woodstove, where the screen door was falling off its hinges, where chickens clucked and crowded in the yard, where unquestioned hospitality was shown toward me, a strangerit is at this farmhouse, where I began to feel, "I am a part of this," where I understood better, the farmhouses and extended families back home. There stood the silent powerful witness: This is who you are, this is what you came out of, these are your roots, these are the things at the heart of your life. It is no wonder the Bible is full of genealogies; they are the witnesses to, "This is who we are, this is from where we have come." Each name, each generation, tells a story and contributes to the foundation of the whole family that has built the faith on which we stand. Matthew's gospel opens with an account of the lineage of Jesus: the patriarchs, the Old Testament names, the characters for better and for worse, that have all contributed to saying, "Jesus is the one who was to come." Mark, beginning with John the Baptist, prepared the way with prophesies and the proclamation that He is the one to ful ll it all. Luke began with what is foretold and how it all comes to pass as God has intended from the beginning in Zechariah's song. John's gospel began with the very origins of creation and said it was destined that the Word would become esh and John would be the last to tell of His coming. Our Biblical and spiritual heritage tells us collectively "This is who we are as God's people" and getting to know the family is nding ourselves at the same time. The roots of our faith are the roots of our own identities and who God intends for us to be. Recently, the tragedy at the Boston Marathon brought out a resurgence of "We are a strong people, we will recover, we will not be defeated, this is who we are!" These prideful and patriotic emotions are truly heartwarming to see. It is from the forging of one people, through generations of lives together, through our national genealogies and common visions, and our sharing and remembering, that give us unshakeable roots and endless hope. I pray that we may be faithful in our generation and give these same qualities to those who will follow us. "We are the people of His pasture and the Sheep of His hand, Oh that today you would hearken to His voice (Psalm 95). In honor of National Volunteer week, April 21 to 27, The Glades Initiative, Inc. would like to recognize volunteers Sabrena Cornish, Father John Mericantante, Pete Rolle, and Bob Rehr.Sabrena CornishMs. Sabrena Cornish is a volunteer for Dot and Ruby’s Helping Hands, a church and food pantry that is a member of our food bank. Our Glades Area Food Bank supports eight area food pantries and one soup kitchen, all of which have a variety of volunteers. However, we see Sabrena more than any of them. She is consistently available to help ensure that Dot and Ruby’s Helping Hands has enough food on hand to feed the hundreds of hungry people that ock to their door on West Canal Street, every other Friday in Belle Glade. Whenever Ms. Harris, director of Dot and Ruby’s Helping Hands, needs someone to represent her organization at a Glades Initiative function or meeting, Sabrena is there. Oftentimes, like last Thursday, Sabrena prepared all 150 bags of food by herself, to distribute the next day. As a volunteer, she picks up the food from the food bank – much of which is heavy cases of canned goods -delivers it to Dot and Ruby’s location, helps bag it into individual bags, distribute it, organize the storage, and helps with record keeping. Sabrena has volunteered for Dot and Ruby’s Church since 2003. Not only does she help run the food pantry, but she takes care of the church as well – doing the paperwork, cleaning the facility, and looking out for the other church members. Ms. Harris claims, “I thank God for placing Sabrena in my life when I needed her.” There have been times when Ms. Harris has been out of town or tending to sick family members, and Sabrena says, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of everything.” In addition to her volunteer work for Ms. Harris, Sabrena is a seasonal worker in agriculture, working for Pioneer Farms. Sabrena is truly a blessing to the Glades community. The Glades Initiative honored Sabrena at the Glades Interagency Network Awards celebration luncheon this week.Father JohnFather John Mericantante has been Pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pahokee for the last 20 years. During Father John’s tenure at St. Mary’s, he oversaw the building of a much-needed 9,000 square foot church last summer, St. Mary’s Church, which serves a predominantly Hispanic population and operates a food pantry, health clinic, clothing store, playground, and youth facility. He has received numerous awards for his humanitarian efforts throughout his years of service, including the O’Higgins Award from the government of Chile; the Distinguished Layman Award from the Florida Medical Association; the Andrew O’Connell Award from Catholic Charities; the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Florida Department of Health; and most recently the Ruth Wedgworth Humanitarian Award. Father John is loved by his parishioners. He arranged to have a clinic on the premises, where doctors devote their time without charge to give medical aid to the uninsured residents in the area. Father is committed to the Pahokee community; he is a very special person and a very special priest. The Glades Initiative honored Fr. John at the Glades Interagency Network Awards Luncheon this week.Pete RolleMr. Gary “Pete” Rolle, otherwise known as “Pete”, has volunteered for The Lighthouse Caf soup kitchen for ve years. The Lighthouse Caf is a soup kitchen serving hot meals every weekday to anyone who comes in the door. Lighthouse Caf is one of nine food distribution sites that are members of the Glades Initiative’s Glades Area Food Bank. Mr. Rolle came into the Caf one day, ate lunch, and noticed they were short handed. He offered to pour the juice and started helping out more regularly. After some time, the Lighthouse Caf manager, Martha Lynn Weeks, said, “who is that?” and was introduced to Mr. Rolle. From there, he became a permanent member of the Lighthouse Caf team. Mr. Rolle performs a variety of tasks from cleaning and maintaining the facility, to picking up food several times a week from Feeding South Florida, the Palm Beach County Food Bank, and the Glades Initiative’s Glades Area Food Bank. Ms. Weeks claims, “he is always available; I can always count on him.” Mr. Rolle has taken an interest in the people that come into the Lighthouse Caf. His opinion on their life circumstances is well respected. Ms. Weeks says that Mr. Rolle has such a calming demeanor that even when people get angry or rude (which isn’t often), he always handles it and easily calms them, as they respect him. Mr. Rolle lives in Belle Glade and is a very caring family man. He is a blessing to the Lighthouse Caf and the people who bene t from their service.Bob RehrMr. Robert Rehr, called Bob, became familiar with The Glades Initiative in a conversation about volunteer work with his friend, Richard Abedon, the Board President. Mr. Abedon, a retired Attorney and Judge, volunteers weekly at The Glades Initiative in Belle Glade, offering legal assistance to residents in the areas of child support, domestic violence, abuse of children and elders, immigration, fair housing, and other civil matters. Bob volunteers for Honor Flight, where he escorts our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and re ect at their memorials. Even with his work with Honor Flight, Bob wanted to expand his volunteering. He was intrigued with his friend’s story and commitment to the Glades community. Bob is a retired Fire Rescue Chief where he served in Miami, West Palm Beach, and Delray. He also served as Operations Manager for Palm Beach Emergency Management. He contacted the Glades Initiative and met with Karis Engle, Executive Director and Carol Rodriguez, Director of Programs. While Mr. Rehr’s talents far exceed the work he currently provides, ever since that meeting, Bob has been assisting the Glades Initiative with the operations of their Glades Area Food Bank, which supplies food to eight area food pantries and one soup kitchen. “Bob has been a vital asset to the food bank, picking up donated food supplies for us, which can sometimes involve a lot of driving given our distance from the resources of the coast,” says Rodriguez. “Bob recently assisted with transporting 1,000 pounds of donated food from the “Empty Your Pantry” food drive, sponsored by the Town of Palm Beach United Way,” added Rodriguez. “He also drove all the way to Port Everglades in Broward to pickup 22 cases of bananas right off the barge donated from Chiquita International.” In honor of National Volunteer Week, April 21 to April 27, the Glades Initiative would like to thank Mr. Robert Rehr for his assistance with transporting food donations for our food bank. “Bob has been a tremendous asset to us, and is always willing to assist with anything we ask. We are so grateful,” says Karis Engle, Executive Director. The Glades Initiative is a nonpro t organization committed to improving the coordination and effectiveness of the health and human service delivery system in the Glades. His placement on the board was required to fulll the minimum quorum for the city commission, as mandated by law. And although the city is waiting on further clari cation, the language found in the executive order seems not to make any exceptions to the suspension, at least for the time being. In his executive order issued on Dec. 21, 2012, Governor Scott prohibited the commissioners “from any of cial act, duty, or function of public of ce; from receiving any pay or allowance; and from being entitled to any of the emoluments or privileges of public of ce during the period of this suspension, which period shall be from today, until a further Executive Order is issued, or as otherwise provided by law.” ElectionContinued From Page 1 Congratulations to Alondra Cortes, Johmaiky Ramos, and Jairo Garcia for participating at the Scholastic Achievement Foundation of PBC, Thirty-Fifth Annual Dinner. This compares with the national average, which has fallen 1.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.49/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 36.1 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 21.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 13.3 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 32.2 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. "The party at the pump with the seasonally lower prices may be temporarily over," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. "We've seen situations unfold that have caused a reversal in the downward trend, and those situations are multiplying across portions of the U.S. and Canada. Along the West Coast, supply has grown tight and will lead to likely increases, and in the Great Lakes prices may spike 10-20c/gallon in the next two days in over a half dozen states as a result of a similar situation. Re neries are nishing what was an extensive maintenance season and with plant restarts commencing, problems may develop, putting pressure on prices," DeHaan said.
