What is your son’s name and does he have any medical problems. We found him beside the road when the sun came up.” That is what happened to Doug and Helen Murray early Saturday morning, April 20. Their son’s wallet was missing so the only way law enforcement of cials could nd out anything about the man was to hit redial on his cell phone, seeing a number saved to “Ma” as last number dialed. Details are sketchy but what is known is that Christopher Murray, better known to his family and friends as “Pinky,” went out that weekend but ended up being nearly beaten to death. Little information has been released by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Of ce. “Deputies responded to a call on the 400 Block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd at 6:51 a.m., in reference to a white male lying on the ground covered in blood,” said Teri Barbera, spokeswoman for Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Of ce. “Christopher was not responsive and transported via Trauma Hawk to St. Mary’s Medical Center. “Christopher was unresponsive at the hospital and was unable to give a statement,” said Ms. Barbera. “It is unknown what happened to him.” According to Ms. Barbera, once Christopher is able to speak to investigators, an interview will be conducted. The case remains open pending further investigation. On Facebook, a group created for Chris’ family and friends demonstrates how loved the young man is by people he knew. The actions served to show the dedication that local deputies have to the area, when the prospect of diving into canal waters was carried out by a deputy who eschewed his own safety for that of others. Although the man in the submerged car eventually succumbed to his injuries, the deputy’s superiors do not allow that to mar the deputy’s accomplishment. “I think what he did was courageous,” said Lt. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 4 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee April 25, 2013 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonDuring April, many of the wintering songbirds begin their migration back to their northern breeding grounds. The American Redstart will be one of the last migrant warblers to leave central and south Florida. They normally breed across much of North America except for the Paci c Coast, the arid Southwest, and the Great Plains. These common migrants rarely breed in Florida. This small songbird's song is a series of sweet high-pitched notes with an accented ending note. Some variations include "Weesee, wee-see, wee-see" or tsee, tsee, tsee, tsee, tsway". The male American Redstart has a black hood, back, wings, tail and chest; it has orange patches on the side of its chest, in the wings and in tail and its belly is white. Females and young males have a gray head and back and yellow instead of orange patches. American Redstarts prefer living in second growth deciduous woodlands where there is an abundance of shrubs. When foraging for prey, the males often ash their orange and black wings and tail to ush insects. Their diet consists mainly of ying insects, but they will occasionally eat berries and seeds. Their tightly woven, open cup nest is either tted into branches or far in a tree or shrub. It is constructed of small twigs, grasses, bark strips, hair, leaves and mosses which are glued together with spider silk. The female lays one to ve creamy white eggs with dark speckles. The eggs are incubated for about 12 days, with the young edging when they are nine to ten days old. Inland Birding Fun: American Redstart (AMRE) PHOTO/ GREG CORNETTAmerican Redstart (AMRE). The incident happened in Pahokee on Feb. 8 at just after 1 p.m. That’s when dispatch received a 911 call about a vehicle in the canal on Muck City Road. The caller did not know how long the water had been in the water. Two units arrived initially, Deputies Moorer and Read. While Deputy Moorer made contact with the caller who phoned in, Deputy Read made a split-second decision to enter the canal to search for potential victims after seeing air bubbles breaking in the surface of the water. With deputies keeping a close eye on any possible alligators in the water, Deputy Read swam to the vehicle and dove underwater to nd a person still inside. The victim had a seat belt on. The deputy unfastened the seat belt and pulled him out through the driver side window. Pulling the man onto the bank, the deputy handed him over to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, who began administering CPR in an attempt to revive the victim. As soon as the medical crew grabbed the man, Deputy Read went back in the water to search for more victims. There were none. And while the emergency crew worked feverishly to rescue the man, he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade. “I wish to commend Deputy Read for his heroism of making the decision to enter the canal in attempts to save any occupants inside the vehicle, especially not knowing the time delay on this vehicle crash,” Sgt. Christopher Caris wrote in a commendation letter. “Deputy Read is an asset to the western communities and should be commended for a job well done.” This month, the deputy received the Of cer of the Year Award from the Sons of the American Revolution (Palm Beach County Chapter). Deputy Read’s citation will also be incorporated into a hardbound book presented to the National Congress in July, and it will become a permanent xture of their museum in Louisville, Ky., according to Lt. Woodward. Christopher Caris Gove Elementary’s 3rd Fun Family and Fitness Night was a great success with over 200 participants. The Fun Family and Fitness for FCAT Success is a community-based program fostering family involvement in preparing the children for the FCAT test with wellness for all as our foundation. The goal was to prepare parents and their children in mind, body and character for lifelong learning and family wellness. Third grade parents and their children were given hands-on strategies that will encourage them to create a healthy learning atmosphere in their daily lives, improve their nutrition, and promote activities that will help them engage in family tness. Changes in students and families were evident from the response from the participants during the event. Over 200 people attended on a school night. Each year it has improved in attendance from 50 percent the rst year, to 65 percent the second, and our record breaking success rate of 85 percent parent participation. Everyone loved the resources and motivation from the third grade teachers, Gove Wellness Student Council (GWSC) plus administration Darren Edgecomb, Lakeside Medical Center, Terri Calsetta, Claudia Gutierrez, Jayne Hoesterey and our district volunteers Erica Whit eld and Denise Griffo. Big thanks go to our Third Grade Teachers with Grade Chair Sirica Brown, who encouraged our families to attend and Mrs. Betancourt for being our interpreter. This program was a dream developed by Terri Calsetta, and our school is so fortunate to have developed a partnership with LMC, NFL Play 60 grant and our main contributor Lake Okeechobee Rural Health Network, Marilyn Leeds. We want to thank these organizations and the staff that accomplished the ground work to make it happen. Gove Elementary’s Wellness Committee and Lakeside Medical Center will give any school the templates to develop this program at their site. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 GRAND OPENING! MARCH 27863-674-1220 220 South Industrial Loop, LaBelle, FL NOW OPEN! 9 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee A pril 25, 2013 Religion ColumnFishing or Wetting a Line?BY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist Church This week, I‘m on vacation in the Bahamas, so my focus is on shing. If you think about it, there are basically two kinds of sherman. Some sh to catch sh and are not satis ed unless the ice chest is full at the end of the day. Then there are the recreational shermen, who are more interested in the experience than actually catching sh. These sherman are satis ed with just getting out for the day and “wetting a line”. If they catch a few sh, that’s ne, but if they don’t, they still enjoy the trip. I’m kind of a combination of the two. With yearnings to ll the ice chest, my goal is to catch enough sh to have a church sh fry. However, I also enjoy getting away and breathing in the fresh ocean air. In the Gospel of John, Simon Peter stated, “I’m going shing.” The other disciples declared, “we’re going too!” So the disciples posted their “gone shing” sign on the upper room door and headed out to the lake. Maybe they weren’t holding their mouths right, because we are told this shing trip was a dud — “that night they caught nothing.” It wasn’t that the disciples had not tried to catch sh, they shed all night! It wasn’t that the disciples didn’t have the right equipment, they had the best tackle! It wasn’t even the time of day that was the problem. It takes more than working, more than tackle, and more than time; it takes catching sh. Without sh the disciples were simply “wetting a line”. What may be enjoyable as a recreational pastime is deadly from a spiritual perspective. The church is called to be “ shers of men and women,” yet often we may just be “wetting a line”. We may not be all that concerned if we catch sh or not! One reason many churches aren’t quick to see new people coming into the church is the same reason many of us don’t care if we catch a lot of sh while shing: sh are messy! If we catch a mess of sh, we have a mess of sh to clean. It’s much easier to just wet our lines. It doesn’t take much effort when you sh and don’t catch anything. It does, however, take effort to sh like you really want to ll your ice chest. The question for us is, “Are we content to practice casting our weighted lines in the backyard? Or are we truly after some sh and will we do whatever it takes to catch some?“ Of course it’s easier to just “wet a line” and say we’re shing, so the church today has mastered the art of shing without ever really catching much. Instead of shing for men and women, we tend to focus on busy work and church maintenance. We are called to be shers of men and women, not just keepers of the aquarium. Some statistics show that 70 percent of our churches have plateaued or are declining. This begs the question, “Are we truly shing or just wetting our lines?” In many instances, our shing today consists mainly of shing for children of church members in the safe church pond or transferring sh from one church ice chest to another one down the street. Imagine what would happen if we focused more on shing the pools of the unchurched all around us! The doors of our churches could over ow with great catches that would bless them and us!

2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee A pril 25, 2013The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved revisions to its gopher tortoise permitting guidelines April 18 at its meeting near Tallahassee. The guidelines are based on stakeholder input and designed to be consistent with the updated Gopher Tortoise Management Plan approved in September 2012. Updated permitting guidelines provide adequate nancial planning for the long-term management of gopher tortoise recipient sites, stipulations for the capture of tortoises for relocation when using a backhoe, and criteria to de ne when to suspend, revoke or not renew an authorized gopher tortoise agent permit. This action comes during the time of year when gopher tortoises begin their springtime maneuvers through Florida's open canopy forests and sandy areas. Tortoises are on the move in search of fresh greenery to eat after emerging from winter dormancy in their deep burrows. "Ever since the 2007 approval of the original Gopher Tortoise Management Plan, the FWC has worked closely with stakeholders to improve and revise both the gopher tortoise permitting guidelines and the management plan," said Deborah Burr, the FWC's gopher tortoise management plan coordinator. "Conservation of gopher tortoises and their burrows that shelter other species is our longterm goal, so they always will be part of Florida's landscape." Gopher tortoises live in all of Florida's 67 counties, preferring high, dry, sandy places such as longleaf pine forests, oak sandhills, pine atwoods and coastal atlands and dunes. Their burrows can be recognized by the half-moon shape of the entrance, which curves at the top. The gopher tortoise is listed as a state threatened species, and it is against the law to harm gopher tortoises, their burrows or eggs. Generally, it is best to leave a gopher tortoise undisturbed, unless you need to move it off a highway. Then it should be placed immediately on the other side of the road and pointed in the same direction that it was traveling.Gopher Tortoises Start Springtime Maneuvers COURTESY PHOTO Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have fallen 4.9 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.45/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 8,237 gas outlets in Florida. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.50/g.Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices Sunday were 41.2 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 22.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 14.5 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 34.7 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. "The slow trend downward in the nationl average has survived another week," said Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. "While unprecedented, the decline in the national average certainly has delighted motorists who are used to large spikes in gasoline prices that come with the territory of springtime. With Memorial Day just ve weeks away, there's good news for motorists: prices will likely continue to lag behind year ago levels," DeHaan said. Gas Price Update
