Dr. Holly Bennett of Ohio selected out of 129 applicants nationwideBY JOSE JESUS ZARAGOZA e SunThe Glades campus of Palm Beach State College now has a new provost, Dr. Holly Bennett of Ohio. Dr. Bennett was selected out of a total pool of 129 applicants from around the country, reported Tabatha McDonald, college relations and marketing specialist. The president of the college made the recommendation last week to the college’s board of directors, who then rati ed the appointment. In announcing the selection of the new provost, Dr. Dennis Gallon, PBSC president, cited Dr. Bennett’s “extensive experience in higher eduGLADES DAY RUNS PAST CHAMPAGNAT CATHOLIC IN FIRST ROUND OF CLASS 2A PLAYOFFSBY NAJI TOBIAS e SunAaron Baker said that Glades Central isn’t losing any more games this season. His Raiders lived up to that proclamation – at least for another week. Glades Central, winners of seven straight games after a 0-4 start, scored a 34-12 triumph over Rockledge to advance to the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. Played at Ef e C. Grear Stadium on Nov. 16, the Raiders opened the game with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by senior triple-threat, Will Likely. Likely, who led Glades Central with eight carries for 124 yards and three touchdowns on the ground (four overall), scored again on a 14-yard run that gave the Raiders a 13-0 lead heading into the second quarter. Glades Central went into halftime with a 20-6 lead, thanks to a 51-yard touchdown run by Likely. From there, the Raiders never looked back. Glades Central (7-4) scored twice in the second half, as Likely’s 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Baker’s 27-yard scoring run in the fourth sealed the deal. “The whole week, we had to stay focused and turn it up,” said Baker, who had 12 carries for 72 yards and the fourth-quarter touchdown. “We made a commitment to never lose again.” The Raiders play their next playoff game at home (Friday, Nov. 23 with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff time) against Merritt Island, a team they eliminated in the second round of last year’s Class 5A playoffs. Interestingly, Merritt Island (10-1) will come into this game as a favorite to avenge last year’s playoff loss to Glades Central. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 2 Section A Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 22, 2012 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonFive Juvenile Whooping Cranes, two female and three male, were released together on Oct. 22, at Horicon National Wildlife Refuge in east/ central Wisconsin. Radio transmitters are being used to track their journey as they “tour” their wintering grounds in Florida. They arrived in Clay County on Nov. 6, Manatee County on Nov. 7, and then went to Everglades National Park before coming to Hendry County on November 9th. Information and updates about the Eastern Migratory Whooping Crane Reintroduction Project, which is administered by the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership, is located at www.bringbackthecranes.org. The Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP) “asks anyone who encounters a whooping crane in the wild to please give them the respect and distance they need. Do not approach birds on foot within 200 yards; remain in your vehicle; do not approach in a vehicle any closer than 100 yards. Also, please remain concealed and do not speak loudly enough that the birds can hear you. Finally, do not trespass on private property in an attempt to view or photograph whooping cranes (WCEP)” Whooping Cranes are the tallest bird in North America. They are similar in shape, but are larger than Sandhill Cranes. Whooping Crane populations have rebounded from a low 15 birds in the United States in the 1940s to about 600 today. The eastern migratory population has about 110 birds (57 male and 53 female). Adults are about ve feet tall with a long neck, long legs, white body and black wingtips. They have a red patch on their foreheads. Juveniles have cinnamon-brown feathers with some white. Juveniles do not have red on their head or face. The call of these endangered birds is a loud single bugle-like note. To join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers for a birding trip to STA5 Nov. 24 or Dec. 8 sends an e-mail to Margaret England at sta5birding@ embarqmail.com. Average retail gasoline prices in Florida have fallen 1.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.32/g on Sunday. This compares with the national average that has fallen 3.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.43/g. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 2.7 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 30.9 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 26.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 6.5 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. "With Thanksgiving just days away, Americans will be hitting major thoroughfares en masse. While gasoline prices have dropped in the last month and a half, the national average will still come close to breaking a recordthe highest ever national average for Thanksgiving," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. "I don't really see how gas prices could greatly improve between now and Christmas, given the new military action in the Middle East, and other pressures. It's all but certain the national average will not drop under $3.25 per gallon, which could lead to a perilous start to 2013," DeHaan said. Gas Price Update

cation.” According to her C.V., Dr. Bennett brings with her a background in education that spans decades. Although most of that experience comes from serving in an administrative role, Dr. Bennett also has ve years experience teaching in a community college and university. She is currently employed at Belmont College in Ohio as the Dean of Workforce and Economic Development, a subject area in which she holds a doctorate degree. She also previously served as the Dean of College Preparatory Services at Mohave Community College in Arizona, and as a Basic Skills Director at Cape Fear Community College in North Carolina. “Palm Beach State College just has a fantastic reputation among the community colleges,” said Dr. Bennett in explaining why she elected to apply for the position. Dr. Bennett said she also considered the smaller campus, and how well she would be able to become more entrenched in the community, compared to a larger campus. Dr. Bennett is particularly knowledgeable in the area of workforce and economic development, and was at the center of a toughening economic crisis in Ohio, with the recession affecting the steel mills and coal mines hard. Just like in Belle Glade, many people were laid off, and one of her roles was in helping to develop strategies to target the high unemployment. Dr. Bennett will be taking over the reins from Dr. Celeste Beck, who managed the Glades campus during the transition. Dr. Celeste Beck will continue in this capacity until January 2013, when Dr. Bennett is expected to of cially take on the role. “I am very glad to be coming down there, and I’m excited to get started,” she said. This was the shortest week of the year! Following are the highlights: The Pioneer Park and Rosenwald staff members enjoyed a Thanksgiving luncheon in the “Coca’Cola lounge on Tuesday, Nov. 20! Ms. Oftedal, rst grade teacher will be leaving us temporarily to have another little Sugar Bear! We give a hearty Sugar Bear welcome to our new second grade teacher, Ms. Suehae Ruiz. All staff members helped organize the dungeon (our over owing leveled book room!) on Monday during their break times. Morning Intervention & Enrichment Reading continued. The Resource Depot visited third grade with a fun, creative lesson on recycling. Many thanks to our Sister School, Panther Run Elementary for delivering Thanksgiving baskets and making this a wonderful holiday for some of our needy Sugar Bear families. Holiday Reading Principal Adam Miller would like to invite families to encourage our children to read over the break. This marks the rst week this year where our students will feel the inevitable tug of freedom from school. (This will be repeated again before winter break and spring break). We need to keep our students focused on learning. Students will bring reading bags home lled with books on their level. A daily study routine with a set time for reading and homework will help prevent the holiday slide. Ms. Parise’s Science News Pine Jog visited our fth graders last week and led them on a fun experimental discovery of the way lizards maintain their body temperatures. The experiment involved setting up thermometers in the courtyard and at various locations throughout the school. Students formed a hypothesis, preceding the experiment. The thermometers simulated the lizards in different areas of sun and shade and at varying times of the day. Students gathered data and graphed the results, revisiting their hypothesis to ne tune their conclusions. The Reading Caf from Ms. Jasmin Greetings Sugar Bears! You are no doubt home enjoying a little turkey this Thanksgiving week. But thankfully, Sugar Bears will never be turkeys when it comes to keeping up our reading skills! A Reason to be Thankful Even in Hard TimesBY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH.D.+ Saint Martins ChurchOnce, I began serving a new Church in a cold January. People in the congregation were proud that they had survived another year. I was a bit taken aback. I had hoped that we would have new directions and programs, outreach and growth, ministries and services to others. Over time, I began to re ect on what survival had meant to them. Other churches were closing; our church did not. Other community services were being cut back; ours continued to serve. Later, programs were added as needs were identi ed, and growth took place in new directions. I realized that survival was the rst and possibly most important step. Surviving means that you may continue when the times change. Surviving when others no longer existed means doing what you are destined to do. I had to learn that surviving freed us just enough to look ahead and plan for tomorrow. Surviving allows us to be the people God wants us to be. In another month, the Christmas story will be told once more. With the birth of Jesus came a ight into Egypt. Joseph knew that Herod was out to take the life of the newborn; a time away would be temporary, but it will also save a life and the destiny will not be thwarted.(cf. Matthew 2:13ff). Jesus does not begin His earthly ministry right away; He is "led by the spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1)." He will overcome the temptations that he is faced with and come out from this time away knowing his adversary did not succeed. Survival can mean taking a step backward or it can be a time of regrouping, refocusing and planning for another and better day. I keep hearing about having to do more and more with less and less. Cutting back, layoffs, closings, losses, things that used to be and are now eliminated. I go back to the lessons of scripture; the Christ-child lived on in a precarious world at a precarious time in history. He set the stage for a better future. There is much to be thankful for across our land even with the hardships and disasters; both natural and man-made. I am grateful for the many blessings that have come my way and things I have to share with others. I also am aware of those who feel hurt by the losses they have suffered and therefor feel less than thankful at this special time. Is there a reason to be thankful, even in the midst of great losses, sacri ces and downturns? By all means! Those who rst gave thanks in this country had just left their homeland behind and made a dangerous sea crossing; had "downsized" to cabins from homes, had left security and comfort behind to share a meal with people that must have seemed strange and very different from anything they had ever known. And they gave thanks for it all! Ahead lies hope and the opportunity for a new life. They celebrated it all, and with faith and hard work they made that dream into a reality that was never before known to the world. That is now our opportunity and reason to have faith today; and our reason to give thanks at this time. May this be a special and joyous thanksgiving for us all; may we thank God for being with us at the best and worst of times; going forward from where we are in faith and knowing that God was and is there all the time.Don’t be a Thanksgiving TurkeyBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchI've been called a turkey before. No one wants to be a turkey. Being called a turkey takes on an even deeper meaning when you realize the fact that commercially grown turkeys aren't one of nature's most intelligent creatures. As a matter of fact, the domesticated turkey has been described as being "as brainless as a baseball." Even drinking can put a strain on turkey intelligence. Many aren't smart enough to close their mouths in the rain. If a turkey is outside looking up to the sky in a heavy rain, it can drown. No one wants to be a turkey. At least the turkey has an excuse for being "bird-brained." There is less excuse for us human beings. Take the nine lepers Luke writes about in Luke 17. Jesus had healed them from a disgusting, painful and unsightly skin disease. It was a tremendous gift that made it possible for them to re-enter society and reunite with their families. Ten lepers were healed. But only one leper came back and said, "Thank you." Talk about turkeys! Ten received God's blessing, but only one stopped to say thanks. Thanksgiving is upon us! Thanksgiving is the start of the season of giving and sharing and giving thanks. I'm reminded of a story I heard about the time the King of Masselbutania came to America for an operation. His American surgeon was accustomed to setting his fee on a sliding scale according to what a patient could pay. A wealthy person paid the full price. If a person was poor, he paid almost nothing. But the surgeon couldn't decide how much to charge the king. Should it be free because he was the king, or should it be signi cant, because he was the king? After all, a king is a king. Upon a whim, the surgeon sought out the king's attorney, who shared, "The king is an honorable man. Like you, he understands value. My advice to you is to simply send him an invoice with no amount indicated and then add a handwritten footnote saying, The king can do no wrong.'" The surgeon did so, and a check came back for $250,000. The surgeon was ecstatic. He sent his wife on a no-holds-barred shopping spree, ordered a new car, and left on an extended cruise. He arrived home, happy and refreshed, but with very little left in his banking account. When he opened his mail, he found a bill from the king's lawyer. It had no amount written in, but there was a handwritten note saying, "The honorable Doctor can do no wrong." Thanksgiving is the time of year when we are encouraged to take a moment not only to count our many blessings, but to give thanks to our God who has helped us make it through the hardships, losses, and struggles that we have faced this year. God sends no bills for this. No statement of our account with God is going to show up in our mailbox. God does not look over our shoulders as we reach into our wallets or purses to see what we might give for Him. God does, however, trust each of us and God trusts us as a church and as a faithful community to provide and care for His ministry and the world around us. He waits for our response. Don't be a Thanksgiving Turkey! Remember, "The Honorable Giver can do no wrong." 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Section A 5 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 22, 2012 Religion Columns
