Ambitious demolition project to tear down dozens of unsightly propertiesBY JOSE JESUS ZARAGOZA e SunIt is strange to see the buildings in their present state: cracking, peeling, fading away, worn out and no longer useful. They are abandoned and uncared for, with more than just paint peeling off the sides of the structures – their wooden exteriors are ruptured like scars on weary faces. For years dilapidated structures have stood on properties throughout Belle Glade untouched, with the city not having enough money to demolish them and the property owners themselves unable or unwilling to carry out the task. More than just visually unpleasant, many of the buildings contain harmful asbestos and are un t for anyone to live in. The only people who frequent them nowadays are the occasional homeless persons looking for respite from the rain or shelter from the sun. Until now. The city of Belle Glade is moving forward with one of the most ambitious demolition projects that they have taken on in the past ten years, and is armed with a list of 35 properties to be razed, along with a newly reinforced partnership with Palm Beach County to help the city in achieving that end. Annette Parchment, the City’s Director of Planning and Community Redevelopment Services, is excited about the project. According to her, the county’s involvement nally makes moving ahead possible with cleaning out some of the more blighted areas in the community. “We’re actually just doing the footwork, getting the information and identifying the structures for the demolitions,” said Ms. Parchment, who explained that the county is going to absorb the full cost of tearing down the structures and clearing the properties. Palm Beach County is also covering the cost of the environmental reviews, asbestos surveys and abatement of the asbestos – a godsend to the city. The predicament the city previously found itself in was a dif cult one: the structures are eyesores, but early estimates on how much it would cost city hall to take them down one by one were astronomical. Protecting Florida’s $80 million blueberry crop from freeze damage is always a wintertime challenge, but a University of Florida study shows that structures called high tunnels could shield plants from cold and promote earlier fruit ripening. Though the initial investment can run from $18,000 to $25,000 per acre plus labor, high tunnels deliver better quality fruit, bigger early yields and higher prices if growers beat competitors to market, said Bielinski Santos, an associate professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. The study, published in the current issue of HortTechnology, tracked two growing seasons on a commercial blueberry farm in Alachua County. The results showed that temperatures outside the tunnels plunged to freezing or nearfreezing 61 times during the study. Temperatures fell that low just three times inside the unheated tunnels. High tunnels may increase air and soil temperatures and protect the plants from wind and rain damage, leading to better owering and more fruit, said Santos, based at UF’s Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Balm. Plants grown in the tunnels produced about 4.5 tons of ripe fruit per acre by the end of March; no ripe fruit came from similar plants grown outdoors during that time. Wholesale prices for domestic blueberries are highest early in the season, starting at about $7 per pound in early April, he said. “Usually, Florida growers start harvesting in early April,” Santos said. “The more fruit you can harvest early in the season, the more money you’ll make.” Growers can also save money with high tunnels because they minimize the need for another freeze protection strategy – sprinkling the plants with water to form a layer of ice. In the study, tunnel-grown plants needed about one-tenth the water for freeze protection as plants grown outdoors. The study involved two blueberry varieties developed at UF, Snow Chaser and Springhigh. Snow Chaser is especially well-suited to life in high tunnels, Santos said. Made by stretching thick plastic sheeting across an arched frame, high tunnels resemble Quonset huts, he said. Although they have variable dimensions, most tunnels have roofs anywhere from 8 to 20 feet high, with ends and sides that can be open or sealed, depending on the weather. The technology is popular in other parts of the world but still catching on in the United States, Santos said. In Florida, high tunnels and other protective structures account for about 250 acres of production, mostly for high-value crops such as blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes and bell peppers. Santos said he knows of one Florida blueberry grower using high tunnels; the owners tried 2 acres in 2010 and later expanded to 80 acres. Others have expressed interest in the system. Santos and co-author Teresa Salame-Donoso, a research associate at the Balm center, have begun collecting data for an economic study on blueberry production in high tunnels. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 florida.newszap.com Check out these new features: • Daily Local News Updates • New interactive and easy to navigate format • Plus much, much more!Come see for yourself! 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 29, 2012 Crossword Puzzle Tunnel Technology Could Help Florida Blueberry Growers

2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 4 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 29, 2012 BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe Blue-gray Gnatcatcher is the northernmost-occurring species of Gnatcatcher, and the only truly migratory Gnatcatcher. They winter in the southernmost United States to Honduras and the western Caribbean. Its breeding range extends from southern Oregon east to southern Canada and south throughout the United States, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Guatemala. During the rst Florida Breeding Bird Atlas Survey (1986-1991) they were reported breeding in every county in Florida. Adult males have a long tail, bluish gray back and white underside. They have a white eye ring, white outer tail feathers, and small thin bill. Females are paler gray than the male. Immature birds are similar to the adult female, but their wings are slightly brownish. Blue-gray Gnatcatchers are tiny birds about 4.5 inches long that often make their presence known by their soft "spree" calls and constant motion. Their soft rambling song usually contains some mimicked songs of other bird species. In Florida this species of "least concern" is more abundant in North Florida in the summer and South Florida in the winter. They are seen foraging in a wide variety of habitats in suburban areas, scrublands, mature forests, and hardwood swamps. These small birds often glean, hover or hawk for small insects and spiders, which make up most of their diet. Blue-gray Gnatcatchers usually hunt for insects near the tips of branches which they often scare up by icking their tails from side to side. Nesting occurs from March to July with normally only a single brood being raised. Both adults help build the compact cup nest with high walls that is made of spider webs and caterpillar silk covered with grass, leaves, bark, hair, feathers and other ne bers. This nest is placed on tree limbs two to 25 feet above the ground. The female lays three to six pale blue eggs that have some small dark spots. These eggs are incubated for 13 days with the young edging when they are 10 to 12 days old. Thanksgiving is Over: What Next?BY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH.D.+ Saint Martins ChurchWhile working my way through college, I spent about a year and a half on a 104-foot boat that cruised in South Florida and Bahamian waters. The boat was chartered; that meant downtime when we were in port and waiting for the next trip. The captain used this time to get the ship ready once more for the next voyage; cleaning, repairing things that gave out during the last trip, planning for the next trip, painting and polishing. Time was spent preparing for the next charter. It was not wasted; nobody sat around and said “I’m bored!” Waiting time can be used or wasted. The Epistle to the Galatians reminds us that “When the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law to redeem those under the law, that we might receive the full rights of sons(Galatians 4:4).” The Bible is in two parts; one before the coming and one afterward. The Old Testament, however, is not about a people that sat idly by, but were being formed by their history, the prophetic messages given to them, the shaping of their destiny, the preparation for what was to come. Then came the moment; the time had fully come. That is the Christian message and what the world had looked to see from the beginning. The lesson I learned from the sea captain; waiting time is preparation time, is a lesson that has proven valuable all of my life. Waiting time is to be put to work in preparation for what is to come. Now, Thanksgiving is over; Christmas is around the corner, the days are moving, time is elapsing. My call is to use that time in preparation for Christmas; not just to wait for it to happen. In fact, most people use the pre-Christmas season in preparation for the great reason to celebrate in another month. Preparing the home, nding the right gift, inviting guests, planning for the extra time of the holidays; all are ways we use these days before Christmas in getting ready. Saint Paul reminds us to “Be very careful how you live, not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil (Ephesians 5:6).” As we make use of the pre-Christmas season to get ready for the holidays, this is a great time to re ect and prepare for what they are all about, anyway! This is the time set aside to recall the coming of a Savior into the world; the gifts that are symbolic of the gifts God has given us, the meals that represent our communion and fellowship with one another, the time spent in recalling the birth and new hope that Jesus brought into the world, and our re-birth of friendships with those we may have not seen or contacted during the past year that are now a part of our sending cards or greetings at this season. What will Christmas mean? The answer will depend on how we prepare for it; materially, socially, individually, spiritually. The meaning will be all the more special if we make it as inclusive of what it is really all about; God coming into the world and the gifts He has brought with Him. My hope is that we celebrate this special season by preparing for it with all of our hearts, all our souls, all our minds. May this time of preparation, this Advent, be a special time in each home and for each of us all as we get ready for a very, very great occasion in the history of humanity. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 NOTICE OF MEETING HENDRY COUNTY VALUE ADJUSTMENT BOARDPLEASE BE ADVISED that pursuant to Chapter 194, Florida Statutes, the 2012 HENDRY COUNTY VALUE ADJUSTMENT BOARD will convene its “nal public meeting on TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2012 at 9:30 am in the County Commission Meeting Room, Hendry County Courthouse, 25 East Hickpochee Avenue, LaBelle, Florida, 33935 for the purpose of making “nal decisions based upon evaluations of the “ndings and recommendations of the duly appointed Special Magistrate on petitions duly “led with the 2012 Value Adjustment Board regarding 2012 property tax assessments, exemptions, deferrals, classi“cations and transfers of homestead assessment difference and to certify the 2012 tax roll. They swim in search of a warm winter refuge such as freshwater springs or canals adjacent to power plant out ows. An adult manatee may weigh 1,000 pounds or more but is susceptible to cold. Water temperatures dipping to 68 degrees or below can produce cold stress in these aquatic mammals, and even cause death. With many of the seasonal manatee protection zones going into effect on Nov. 15, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) cautions boaters to be vigilant about slowing down and watching out for manatees. In Broward County, some slow speed zones formerly active only on weekends are now in effect every day during the cold season. November is designated as Manatee Awareness Month because of this seasonal migration. “Many manatees in Florida have scars from run-ins with boats. We can do our part to help by complying with slow-speed and no-entry zones that indicate manatees may be in the area,” said Kipp Frohlich, who leads the FWC’s imperiled species management section. “Boaters should slow down where manatees like to congregate, such as seagrass beds and warm-water sites.”How to spot Florida’s of cial marine mammalBoaters and personal watercraft operators should scan the water near or in front of their vessels and look for signs that manatees are close by, including repetitive swirl patterns called a manatee footprint, a mud trail, or a snout or uke (tail) breaking the water’s surface. Here are some other steps boaters and personal watercraft operators can take to help manatees migrate safely: Keep vessels in marked channels; Wear polarized sunglasses to improve your vision; Obey posted boat speed zones; Use poles, paddles or trolling motors when close to manatees; Have someone help scan the water when under way. Besides following manatee-safety recommendations, people can help manatees survive by reporting sick, distressed, injured, orphaned or entangled manatees to the FWC’s Wildlife Alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) or text Tip@MyFWC.com. Florida residents also can call #FWC or *FWC via cell phone. Manatee conservation is supported by Floridians who purchase the state’s manatee license plate. One of Bailey’s touchdowns came off a 16yard scoring pass in the second half from senior T.J. Abrams, who is growing more comfortable by the week at the signal-caller position. “We didn’t have the ball for a long time, but we made sure we executed on offense every chance we got,” Abrams said. Glades Central offensive coordinator Reidel Anthony elaborated further on how his team got it done against Merritt Island. “We only three possessions in the rst half and scored on two of those,” Anthony said. “I thought that was pretty ef cient. We have to be more consistent, but I think our offense is coming along. We’re peaking at the right time.” For those who believe that Likely and Bailey comprise of the whole offense, it’s simply not true. The Raiders, who are on an eight-game winning streak, have other weapons in their arsenal, including the likes of senior wideout Yvesner Ferdinand, junior wideout Ronquavion Tarver and sophomore athlete Jonathan Istache. “We don’t have just a couple of dominant players on our team,” Anthony said. “We have a lot of pieces to our puzzle, so no team we play can go out there and concentrate on one player. With all the guys we have, we just have to keep using everyone for what their talents are and move forward.” Glades Central’s next game is a Class 5ARegion 3 nal matchup with Miami Jackson (7-4 record), a team that has upset the likes of defending Class 5A champion Miami Norland and American Heritage-Plantation in the playoffs. The Raiders, who will be at home on tomorrow night, are favored to advance to next week’s Class 5A state semi nals. “All we need to do is execute like we’ve been doing these past few weeks,” Abrams said. “If we continue doing that, then I don’t think any team out there can beat us.” The kickoff time to Glades Central’s Class 5A regional nal against Miami Jackson is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Dade Christian (Miami) 20, Glades Day 14: Most people expected Glades Day to return to Orlando next month for the Class 2A state championship game. Dade Christian was out to make sure it wasn’t going to happen. Kelvin Taylor, one of the most celebrated high school football running backs the country has ever seen, scored all of Glades Day’s 14 points in his team’s Class 2A-Region 4 championship game on Nov. 23. Taylor, who racked up 36 carries for 160 yards, was in prime position to send the Gators into next week’s Class 2A state semi nals after he got his team to Dade Christian’s 10-yard line with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter. But Taylor’s helmet reportedly came off on his run that got Glades Day into a rst-and-goal situation. By rule, he was forced to sit out for the very next play – which turned out to be last of the Gators season. Down 20-14 and with 36 seconds left in the game, Glades Day freshman quarterback Josh Carr, who threw a touchdown pass to Taylor earlier on, mis red on an end-zone pass intended for senior wideout Calvin Darville. Carr’s ensuing pass was intercepted by Dade Christian’s Terrance Alls, which sealed Glades Day’s heartbreaking loss. Glades Day (9-3 nal record) had trouble stopping the speed and athleticism of Dade Christian quarterback Gary Sampson, who recorded 306 all-purpose yards in the game. In addition to all that, one of Carr’s three interceptions was caught by Sampson, who proved to be the difference in the 2A regional title game. As the Glades Day Gators left Miami last Friday night, they were left to wonder what more they could have done to advance further in the playoffs. And they were left to reminisce on the stupendous career that Taylor has had for ve years as the small school’s feature running back. Taylor, who will be enrolling at the University of Florida in January 2013, nished his high school football career with 11,380 rushing yards.
