A second generation of farm families have now joined the ranks of those recognized as Western Palm Beach County’s Farm Family of the Year. The Stewart Stein family was named “Farm Family of the Year” at the annual Farm Bureau Dinner Meeting on Tuesday, October 16. Following in the footsteps of his father, Fritz Stein, who won the award in 1989, Stewart Stein has been farming in the Glades since 1985. Presenter Wynn Jones gave the following information about the family: Stewart Stein is the son of Lois and Fritz Stein Jr. of Chosen, Florida. He has one sister (Julie) and four brothers (Sonny, Robert, Michael, and Tim) and was born at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach on September 7, 1962. He was raised in Chosen and graduated from Glades Day School in 1980 and from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia in 1985. After college, Stewart returned home and went to work for Bob Mace at Mace Sod Farms Inc. When Stewart returned home with a degree in Agriculture, his plan was to join the family farming operation with his Dad and Sonny, but there wasn’t much work to be done on sugarcane at that time of year. The crop had been laidby. They had a meeting at the farm ofce. His Dad asked Sonny what work there was that needed to be done on the farm. After some thought, Sonny replied that there were several fallow elds littered with rocks that needed to be removed. Stewart’s reply was immediate to that proposal left no doubt that picking up rocks in fallow elds wasn’t on his farming agenda. Bob Mace got himself a good sod trainee farmer immediately. Sterwart met his wife, Yvonne Bowles, in Belle Glade in 1986. She graduated from Glades Day School in 1987. Yvonne and Stewart were married in 1991 and have been married for 21-years. They have one daughter, Karina, born in 1994 and one son, Roy Stewart Jr. (Bob) born in 1996. Stewart left Mace Sod Inc. in 1993 to become Farm Manager at Wedgeworth Inc. and to do what he really liked to do, farm sugarcane. Blood Drive Yesterday the Big Red Bus came to Glades Day School once again! The bus arrived at 7 a.m. and didn’t leave until 5 p.m. There was so much support. A big thank you to everyone that came out to save three lives! Homecoming Week 2012 Homecoming week began Monday, Oct. 22, and ends tomorrow, Oct. 26. Students had a variety of activities scheduled during the week. Lower school students participated in dress up days and were excused at the end of each school day to watch the upper school students compete in games in the courtyard. Homecoming t-shirts, tattoos, beads, bam sticks and bows are still on sale. The theme is, “Slay the Saints in the Swamp.” The dress up days were the following; Monday: Pajama Day, Tuesday: Twin Day, Wednesday: Legacy Day, Thursday: Character Day, and Friday: Spirit Day. The Gator Growl was held yesterday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. The Homecoming Dance with the theme “Dance until the World Ends” will be held tomorrow, Oct. 26, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Advanced ticket prices are single $10 and couples $15. At the door, single $12, Couple $18. The food will be provided by Chickl-a. Alumni and Friends Homecoming Social All GDS alumni and friends are invited to attend a gathering after the Homecoming football game tomorrow, Oct. 26, at the Elks Club. The event begins at 9 p.m. and lasts until the last guest leaves. There will be food, music, dancing and a cash bar available. The cost was $10 per person and $20 per couple for advanced tickets, and $15 per person or $30 per couple at the door. Members of the 1982 State Champion Football Team will be honored at the football game tomorrow night. Come and catch up with old friends! Fall Festival The fall festival is set for Oct. 27. This subtropical bird was rst reported breeding in Florida about 30 years ago. They are known locally as "Fulvous Tree Ducks" or "Large Whistling Teal." These mediumsized ducks have long legs and necks with a distinct pro le that appears more goose-like than duck-like. Adult males and females have a buff to tawnycinnamon head, chest and belly. The wings and back are darker brown. There is a silvery border of white tipped feathers between the belly and wings. They have a large blue-gray bill, gray legs, and a white rump patch that is visible when they are in ight. Juveniles have similar plumage, but are paler than adults. Their "kit-tee" call is a noisy high-pitched, two-syllable whistle which is often heard before these ducks are seen. These gregarious birds are often found in shallow freshwater wetland marshes, lakes and ooded agricultural elds as well as pastures and grasslands with standing water. They are mainly nocturnal feeders whose diet consists of seeds of water plants, rice, and aquatic invertebrates. Fulvous Whistling-Ducks breed in Florida and raise one brood annually from March through August. Their nest is a simple bowl of dense oating or ooded emergent vegetation. Surrounding plants are often pulled around the nest to conceal it from predators. Females lay an average of 13 white to buffy white eggs. These eggs are frequently laid in other Fulvous Whistling-Duck's nests or the nests of other duck species. Both parents incubate the eggs for 24 to 26 days with the young edging at 55 to 63 days of age. With water levels currently above average in key areas, the region will likely not see the drought conditions or the water supply challenges of previous years. South Florida is forecast to experience one of the few dry seasons with near-average rainfall in the past 14 years, of cials announced today at a joint brie ng by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and the National Weather Service (NWS). "Water managers like to see water levels at their highest safe levels going into the dry season to protect water supplies," said Susan Sylvester, SFWMD Chief of the Water Control Operations Bureau. "While we still have the potential for signi cant rainfall this wet season, an average dry season should prevent the water supply concerns of the past several years." Only two South Florida dry seasons, 1998-1999 and 2003-2004, have actually been about average in the past 14 years, with two above average and 10 below average dry seasons. Released this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center forecast calls for equal chances of slightly above or slightly below average rainfall for the rst three months of the upcoming dry season. But both NWS and SFWMD climatologists and meteorologists caution that the uncertainty associated with a weather pattern known as El Ni–o means this dry season forecast has a lower con dence than previous years. Among the of cial forecast highlights for the 2012-13 South Florida dry season: Near normal precipitation is mostly likely during the rst part of the dry season, from November to February A drier-than-normal trend may characterize March and April Average dry season precipitation: 12 to 15 inches in the interior/west to 15 to 21 inches in the east Long-term average winter temperature: 64 to 66 F in the interior/west to 67 to 69 F in the eastWet Season UpdateThe new dry season forecast follows a 2012 wet season that has seen above average rainfall in nearly the entire 16-county District, from Orlando to the Florida Keys. District-wide, an average of 41.73 inches of rain, or 6.65 inches above the average, fell between May 8 and Thursday, Oct. 18. Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties, along with the Kissimmee region, experienced the largest rainfall totals, including the historic deluge from Tropical Storm Isaac. In Palm Beach County alone, nearly 15 inches of rain fell in a 72-hour period. In its ood control operations, the District moved an estimated 105 billion gallons of water away from residents in several counties. The historic rainfall pushed Lake Okeechobee to 15.9 feet NGVD on Friday, 0.84 inches above its historic average for this time of year. Highlights of South Florida’s Weather Roller CoasterNormal: Florida receives an average of 52 inches of rainfall a year, with 70 percent falling during the ve-month wet season from approximately June through October. The drought continued, with the driest October-to-mid-June period on record. Record Wet Conditions: In 2009, the sea breeze cycle ushered in the wet season in May. With 9.04 inches of rain falling across the District, May 2009 became the wettest May on record, according to District records dating back to 1932. Keep Your Home Safe from Allergens this Season This week, the Florida Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition announced the addition of three new members: United Parcel Service (UPS), the United States Sugar Corporation and Clean Energy--all leaders in their respective industries. United States Sugar Corporation is a technologically-advanced agricultural and food manufacturing company which produces sugar and citrus products for a variety of national and global brands. Clean Energy is the largest provider of natural gas fuel for transportation in North America and a global leader in the expanding natural gas vehicle market. Clean Energy recently opened its rst two CNG stations in Florida at the Tampa and Orlando airports that are open to the public. Florida is home to many types of soil and some of them lack carbon, meaning they could be used for carbon sequestration – but a new University of Florida study shows that variability in the state’s existing soil carbon levels could make the task harder. Carbon sequestration is the practice of storing carbon; one way to accomplish it is by adding carbon-rich material to soils. Carbon sequestration aims to slow the build-up of carbon-based gases in the atmosphere, a phenomenon believed to be a cause of global climate change. Some landowners may be able to make money by allowing their properties to be used as sites for carbon sequestration. In a presentation today at the joint meeting of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America, researchers with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences reported early ndings from a statewide study analyzing soil carbon content across areas the size of a football eld. The results con rm what researchers have suspected – that soil carbon content can vary widely on a small site, said Sabine Grunwald, a professor in UF’s soil and water science department. That means efforts to amend soil with carbon-rich biomass will need to be tailored to local carbon levels. The results also con rm that soil carbon variability has a lot to do with how the land is used and what material covers the land, factors known as land use and land cover. “Land use is highly correlated with soil carbon values,” Grunwald said. “So if you know the land use for a particular area, you can predict the amount of soil carbon there.” The ndings will help Grunwald and her colleagues develop new digital soil maps that offer greater resolution than past efforts, she said. The maps are needed for precision agriculture, the practice of growing crops using computer-assisted technology that compensates for variable growing conditions. Soil carbon content plays a major role in soil quality, fertility, crop yield and food production. High-quality digital maps can also assist conservation efforts by giving an accurate assessment of subsurface conditions in an area, she said. In the study, doctoral student Xiong Xiong took soil samples from ve areas, each representing one of ve types of land use and land cover commonly found in Florida. They are: pineland, dry prairie, improved pasture, mesic (moderately wet) mixed forest and xeric (dry) upland forest. Together, the ve account for about 40 percent of Florida’s surface area. Three of the sites were located near Gainesville, one in the Panhandle and one in South Florida. At each, Xiong took 108 soil samples, starting with several at a home base. Then Xiong sampled at distances of about 2 yards, 8 yards, 25 yards and 75 yards from the home base. The results showed that, in general, dry prairie and mesic mixed forest had the greatest capacity to store carbon, followed by improved pasture, while pineland and xeric upland forest had the least. The statewide soil carbon assessment is one part of a three-year study funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Grunwald said. She and Xiong are already well into a nationwide assessment, made in conjunction with the National Soil Survey Center in Lincoln, Neb., and researchers in Sydney, Australia. OverviewThe overall forecast thinking as far as track and intensity of Sandy hasn’t changed much since yesterday. Models are generally in agreement in a northward track across the central or western Bahamas Thursday and Friday at highend tropical storm intensity. A concern for South Florida is the expansion of the wind eld to the north and west of the center during this time. Forecasters with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center say a wavering El Nio, expected to have developed by now, makes this year’s winter outlook less certain than previous years. “This is one of the most challenging outlooks we’ve produced in recent years because El Nio decided not to show up as expected,” said Mike Halpert, deputy director of NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. “In fact, it stalled out last month, leaving neutral conditions in place in the tropical Paci c.” When El Nio is present, warmer ocean water in the equatorial Paci c shifts the patterns of tropical rainfall that in turn in uence the strength and position of the jetstream and storms over the Paci c Ocean and United States. This climate pattern gives seasonal forecasters con dence in how the U.S. winter will unfold. An El Nio watch remains in effect because there’s still a window for it to emerge. Other climate factors can in uence winter weather across the country. Some of these factors, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation, a prominent climate pattern, are dif cult to predict more than one to two weeks in advance. The NAO adds uncertainty to the winter outlook in the Northeast and MidAtlantic portions of the country. Areas ravaged by extreme drought over the past year are unlikely to see much relief from drought conditions this winter. In the 2012 U.S. Winter Outlook (December through February) odds favor: Warmer-than-average temperatures in much of Texas, northward through the Central and Northern Plains and westward across the Southwest, the Northern Rockies, and eastern Washington, Oregon and California, as well as the northern two-thirds of Alaska. Cooler-than-average temperatures in Hawaii and in most of Florida, excluding the panhandle. Drier-than-average conditions in Hawaii, the Paci c Northwest and Northern California, including Idaho, western Montana, and portions of Wyoming, Utah and most of Nevada. Drier-than-average conditions in the upper Midwest, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and northern Missouri and eastern parts of North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and western Illinois. Wetter-than-average conditions across the Gulf Coast states from the northern half of Florida to eastern Texas. The rest of the country falls into the “equal chance” category, meaning these areas have an equal chance for above-, near-, or below-normal temperatures and/or precipitation. This seasonal outlook does not project where and when snowstorms may hit or provide total seasonal snowfall accumulations. Snow forecasts are dependent upon the strength and track of winter storms, which are generally not predictable more than a week in advance. Students in grades 3-12 from all Palm Beach County schools were invited to participate in an essay contest on “Why is space exploration important and what does it mean to me?” During the week of Oct. 22-26, Khiarra will be joining the other lucky winners for a chance to speak, via radio, to the astronauts on the International Space Station. Teachers later prepared anchor charts with their grade level teams outlining the Explicit Instruction planning model. Principal Adam Miller presented the training session on "Higher Order Questions." Teachers were given picture and chapter books and with their grade groups planned short (two to three minute) read-alouds to deliver, with two higher order questions in the turn and talk points. Teachers were able to link their questions to Bloom's Taxonomy and Webb's Depth of Knowledge. They were also able to learn more about the correlation to FCAT. Following lunch, Ms. Cleola Pringle who earlier gave an extremely engaging read-aloud on "The Secret Keeper," shared out on Descriptive Feedback. Teachers were encouraged to give written feedback on all student papers with strengths, areas to improve, and next-step improvement strategies. Mr. Miller gave each teacher a copy of two groundbreaking new books on the common core curriculum and grading based on mastery, which will incorporate the student data folders. "Ho w to Grade for Learning K-12" is written by Ken O'Connor, and "Pathways to the Common Core" is written by Lucy Calkins, Mary Ehrenworth, and Christopher Lehman. Ms. Jasmin, in her earlier presentation strongly promoted the reading of "Pathways to the Common Core." Principal Miller wrapped up the session with a review of Marzano's Instructional Evaluation system and guidelines for administrators to gauge the following levels of teacher effectiveness: developing, applying, and innovating. BY BRENDA BUNTING Special to e SunLyrics to an old children’s song says, “If we all pull together, how happy we’ll be.” Those words would be apropos for a recent Glades meeting where community business men and women agreed to help fund economic development for the region. They met with city of cials from the Tri-City area, representatives from the LORE (Lake Okeechobee Regional Economic) Alliance and the (BDB) Business Development Board of Palm Beach County. The gist of the meeting: the need for monetary support of a collaborative effort between the LORE Alliance and the BDB to bring economic development to Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay and surrounding areas. Almost 100 were in attendance at the luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida. Most knew this was to raise funds and still, they came. And what they heard prompted several of them to pledge, on the spot, to give three year nancial support to bring economic development to the Tri-City area. “We are very excited about the new partnership being formed and the collaboration between LORE and BDB to help facilitate viable and complementary economic growth and development to the Glades region,” said LORE President Donia Roberts. BDB’s President and CEO, Kelly Smallridge, made a dynamic pitch for the collaboration between the BDB and LORE which includes her expertise as well as the hiring of a BDB economic development professional to work exclusively to bring new businesses and jobs to the Glades area. She asked businesses to help fund the position for three years. Explaining the concept that to hire a quality employee, that person would expect job security for more than one year, she asked city governments and local businesses to commit $100,000 the rst year and $150,000 during years two and three when the employee will be attending trade shows and marketing the Glades area aggressively. Representatives from all three cities pledged to nancially support the initiative. Following their lead were several businesses who also agreed to give their support. The overall plan outlines six areas: Researching and identifying roadblocks to entry for companies; putting in place policies, process and economic development infrastructure needed to support inward investment; developing a management structure for business development outreach and company support; developing a story and proposition for the Glades Region for marketing purposes; beginning the outreach and prospecting efforts; and creating jobs for the Glades. When an audience participant asked Ms. Smallridge if she is aware of the history of this area and the economic realities, she responded she was, but was up to the challenge, saying she knows this will be one of the biggest challenges she has taken on, but was willing to do it. Belle Glade City Manager Lomax Harrelle, who also serves on the LORE board said, “This is probably the best opportunity we’ve ever had to move forward with economic development for this area. We can no longer afford to simply “go along to get along”. We need county leadership with the vision and demonstrated abilities to optimize that growth for our community. Over the past few months I have had the pleasure of meeting and speaking to many of you one on one or at one of the many forums the Hendry County communities have hosted. Since day one of my campaign I have put forward a clear vision and positive plan for reducing costs and taking the tax collectors office to a new level of customer service and performance. I ask for your support and your vote for me for Tax Collector. My commitment to the citizens of Hendry County is to: MAKE IT BETTER • Establish Hendry County Tax Collectors office as a recognized Center of Excellence for customer service and the many functions we perform. MAKE IT HAPPEN My priorities will be to: • Be an effective steward of your tax dollars • Review processes, procedures and policies and eliminate nonvalue added burdens • Enhance outreach to property owners and businesses to reduce delinquent and non payment of taxes • Enhance communications with our customers and seek feedback on our performance • Provide openness and transparency to the Tax Collectors operations • Seek ways to enhance interaction with other county functional areas to improve our mission effectiveness MAKE IT LAST • Establish a culture of excellence in customer service and performance, while continually seeking ways to improve service and reduce cost to you the taxpayer.
