Eight Glades Central players sign, Glades Day’s Steven Williams commits BY NAJI TOBIAS e SunFor the area’s high school football seniors, National Signing Day is typically a crowning moment. On Feb. 1, nine of the Muck’s top players from the Class of 2012 of cially ended their high school experiences by signing letters of intent to a variety of colleges nationwide. All of the National Signing Day activity happened in Belle Glade, as Glades Central and Glades Day were the only area schools that had players ready to make the big move. With that said, it doesn’t mean Pahokee won’t be sending any of its players to college. Simply put, National Signing Day is essentially the rst day that any high school football player can fax off their written letters of intent to a college. The of cial signing period lasts from now until April 1, though there are scores of high school seniors that can still commit to a college after that day. When it’s all said and done, it doesn’t matter when Thursday, February 9, 2012 50¢ Plus tax V ol. 86 No. 133 SEE FOOTBALL 11 Players Ink College Football Letters PHOTO / NAJI TOBIASA total of eight Glades Central Raiders seniors, with head coach Roosevelt Blackmon (center), are happy to get a chance to play college football after signing their letters of intent on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at the Boys and Girls Club’s Bill Bailey Gymnasium in Belle Glade. Pioneer Park ElementarySugar Bear Bucks Store Assistant Principal, Mr. Rieckenberg and Parent Liaison, Kelvin Johnson were manning the Sugar Bear Bucks Store near the cafeteria stage for students wishing to spend their Sugar Bear Bucks this week. Students who earned Sugar Bear Bucks for good behavior, exceptional citizenship, and learning gains were able to purchase from a wide variety of school supplies, candy and fun souvenirs. Some of the students are saving their Sugar Bear Bucks for an entry ticket to the upcoming dance. Principal’s Reading Challenge Mr. Miller’s wall is running out of room! The front entrance bulletin board is nearly lled to capacity with students who have risen in their reading levels or exhibiting notable gains. The “Read-with-Mr. Miller” award pass is given by the classroom teacher to students who are climbing in their reading. The pass, true to its name, is a ticket to read with Principal Miller, who enjoys his time with each child and compliments the child on their efforts, growth and reading. Mr. Miller then gives the child a book of his or her choosing from his book bin, congratulates each reader over the intercom during the afternoon announcements and has the award added to the already overowing bulletin board. The original goal was for every child to read with Mr. Miller, but we believe many students are making their second and third trips and more, which is a wonderful re ection of over-all gains throughout the student body. Parents please peruse this wall when visiting the school and be sure to congratulate your child for his or her hard-earned reading accomplishments. A nal incentive for students to improve their reading as rapidly and often as possible is Mr. Miller’s promise to learn and perform a “rap-dance” during a future school assembly. Local D.J./rap singer/recording artist Kay-B is Mr. Miller’s coach, so we’ve de nitely got a professional on board. However … if you saw Mr. Miller called up to the stage to “throw some deuces” with fourth grade teachers and Kay-B in the fall, (and couldn’t help being humorously entertained along with the rest of the audience) then you know Kay-B really has his work cut out for him! Despite his aspiring rap artist con dence, and derring-do, we just want to say, “Good thing you’re an awesome principal Mr. Miller!” Within Words Training A Within Words Pattern Training was given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade teachers on Thursday, February 2nd in the SIG room. The training is a follow up to the previous Words Their Way training and goes deeper into the sequence involved in teaching students through word sorts. Initially the Words Their Way spelling test identi es student’s next steps according to highest need. The needed word sort is then identi ed through this data. For example the student may need a speci c long vowel as their next step. That word sort will be copied for the students use in their word work portion of reader’s workshop. Ms. Rulison shared photos from her recent trip to Teacher’s College in New York City Schools and visits to area classrooms where this research based strategy has proven to be a high yield hands-on successful tool for students. Classrooms which have not already begun to use the word sorts will begin strategically rolling out this plan for students this week. The will begin with a whole group guided instruction on day one. On day two, students will read over their words and cut them and put them into baggies as the teacher circulates to assist as needed. On day 3 students will participate in a partner sort and turn and talk to discuss why they sorted certain words into chosen categories. Example: “All of the words in this column sound like long i and end in y or the column over here has words that end in a silent e that makes the middle i long.” On day 4 the students will glue the sort down or write it down. Early nishers may add words from a word hunt. On day 5 the teacher will check word sort folders for accuracy, completion and will also assess for mastery of that skill. Ms. Rulison shared examples from her New York City visit of the weekly schedules charted out to help students with task tracking. Online Resources Many students make full use of their limited computer time while at school, perhaps during computer lab or as a center rotation during reading, math or writing, but they can also access the district’s wonderful array of learning sites from home. From Palmbeachchools.org, click on: students, then learning tools 4 kids, then the site for the desired subject. Some sites offer practice opportunities and instruction on various subjects. For sites such as FCAT Explorer and Riverdeep, students will need their PB number, which they can get from school if they do not already have it. This is a great way to reinforce the teaching and tutoring students receive at school and will help enrich student knowledge and improve performance. Primary students can also bene t from the wide assortment of entertaining and engaging games, songs and interactive instructional programs on Starfall and within Riverdeep. Students may also read the words along with their favorite stories and books of their choice with the narrators while enjoying the beautiful visuals on Tumble Books. Science Club The Science Club held its rst meeting with Ms. Parise on Friday, February 3rd, to create signs reminding students and teachers to recycle. The “Go Green” themed signs will give reminders on 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 9, 2012 Medical Home DayFor residents in need of healthcare who can’t afford a doctor, numerous public and private partners and 12 health centers are committed to opening their facilities on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Medical Home Day is a oneday medical event designed to connect residents without a medical home to medical information and services. BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe Purple Martin is the largest of the North A merican swallows. This medium-sized songbird has a large head, thick chest, and broad, pointed w ings. The adult male is blue-black above and below. The adult female is bluish on the back with a dingy gray brown chest, pale dirty gray belly, and gray collar around the neck. The immature Purple Martin has markings similar to the female but less bluish on the back and its underparts are a dirty white. Their song is a series of musical chirps interspersed w ith raspy twitters. These aerial insectivores catch a variety of w inged insects for food. They rarely come to the ground to eat. Purple Martins get their water by skimming the surface of the pond or other bodies of water by scooping the water up with their lower bill. Native Americans hung up empty gourds for Purple Martins before Europeans arrived in North America. The Eastern Purple Martins now nest almost exclusively in gourds and man-made boxes. Currently, the older Purple Martins are returning to inland Florida to locations where they have nested before. Breeding pairs of Purple Martins will line their nests with soft materials like grass, leaves, paper, or mud. Between March and June, four to ve w hite eggs are laid which are incubated solely by the female for 15 to 18 days. Both adults feed the y oung until they are ready to leave the nest when 24 to 28 days old. Become a "Citizen Scientist" and help report Purple Martins and other bird species during the 2012 GBBC. Just submit your daily 15 minute or more observations for any or all days during the Feb. 17 to 20 to the GBBC web site at www.birdsource.org/gbbc. You are invited to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers for birding trips to STA5 located 20 miles south of Clewiston. Join us for the largest bird-themed event in South Central Florida, located on the Southwest shores of Lake Okeechobee, the state's largest lake. Wide vistas of blue skies, oak-canopied rivers, quaint small antique towns and farming communities offer visitors a taste of inland Florida. Some of the state's rarest plants and animals are found here including the Snail Kite, Florida Scrub Jay and Florida panther. They are very proud to announce that they now have available Pixel Optics' revolutionary emPower! eyeglasses, the world's first electronic focusing prescription eyewear. They are the first and currently the only vision care practitioners in Hendry County to offer this new technology. The eyeglasses feature composite lenses with a thin transparent LCD-like layer, microchips, micro-machine accelerometers and miniature rechargeable batteries. With all this they have the same weight, feel and look of your everyday high fashion eyewear designs. The eyewear cost about $1,350 for a complete pair, which includes the frame, lenses, coatings, and all electronic components including a charger. "We are happy to offer our patients this cutting edge vision correction option. Bifocals or the reading power in progressive lenses often interfere with daily activity. Walking up and down steps is a perfect example. Being able to turn the reading power off to reduce it is a real breakthrough," says Drs' Parrish and Youmans. The microchip, micro-accelerometers, and miniature batteries are hidden discreetly in the temples of the frames. The transparent liquid crystal layer in each lens is able to electronically change and activate the near focus zone of the lens only when needed without making a sound or change in the appearance of the lens. Just touch the frame to adjust your view, or set it to do it automatically. emPower! offers instant, automatic vision correction for all ranges of sight, less distortion and wider fields of view compared to a traditional progressive lens. This gives you unprecedented control over you vision! Wearers can choose to operate the eyeglasses in three different modes: manual on, automatic and manual off. emPower! is shock resistant and waterproof. One charge of the battery allows operation for two to three days of use. Stop by the optical at Family Eye Care and let Tom, Natalie or Tracy give you a no obligation demonstration. No appointment necessary. Office hours are Monday-Friday 8:30-5:00, except Thursday 7:30-7:00. We also have hours on some Saturdays. 3 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 9, 2012 Inland Birding Fun: Purple Martin (PUMA) Margaret England PHOTO / MARTY VALIENTMale Purple Martin.

Love resists being poured into a measuring cup. It will not lie down alongside a yardstick. Chemical analysis has been unable to separate love’s constituent elements. Love has to be measured by what it does. Love for friends, love for the family, love for our nation, our home, our God -all have to be measured by what we do for each one. You see, love is more than a pleasant feeling or even a sensual thrill. Love is deliberately putting yourself out for someone else. This is why we sacri ce for a home, or why a mother gives herself for her little ones. We have been conditioned into believing that love is what others do to us, that when others are attractive to us, or make us feel good, we can love them. But love is not what others do to us. It is w hat we do for them; Love is understanding your companion through the years. Love is teaching a child to walk. Love is doing. No wonder Jesus could command us, “Love one another, as I have loved you.” He was not asking us to cultivate warm feelings, but to go out and do. His commandment was not to discuss love, but to demonstrate it! Jesus told us that the two great commandments were to “Love the Lord, thy God, with all thy heart, with all thy mind, with all thy strength, and with all thy soul.” And He said the second commandment was like unto it, “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” He said, “On these two commandments hang all the law and prophets. The “love” that Jesus was talking about is “agape” love, which means “to seek the HIGHEST good;” and it is “Intelligent, unsel sh, active, good will.” If we all practiced this “love” it would solve all our problems.Valuable AdviceBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchAs a pastor, I receive a lot of sometimes informative information which just calls out to be shared. For instance, someone has collected a list of Fatal Things to Say to Your Pregnant Wife w hich I feel compelled to share with my brethren. Following are seven fatal things to say to your w ife when she is pregnant. #7: “I nished the Oreos.” #6 “Y’know, looking at her, you’d never guess that Pamela Lee had a baby!” #5: “Well, could they induce labor? The 25th is the Super Bowl.” #4 “Whoa! For a minute there, I thought I woke up next to Willard Scott!” #3: “I’m jealous! Why can’t men experience the joy of childbirth?” #2: “Are your ankles supposed to look like that?” and the #1 Fatal Thing to Say to Y our Pregnant Wife: “You don’t have the guts to pull the trigger.” And then there’s the question, “Is the glass half full, or half empty?” It depends on whether y ou’re pouring, or drinking. Other words of wisdom: “Women and cats will do as they please; men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.” “Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.” “Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.” Speaking of cats, imagine having to wash one. I had to once, and it was an experience! Years later, I received the following instructions on how to do it properly: Dear P.J., To bathe the cat: 1. Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water in the bowl. 2. Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bath room. 3. In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids. Following this activity, you may need to stand on the lid. 4. The cat will selfagitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that come from the toilet, the cat is actually enjoying this. 5. Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides both the “Power Wash” and “Rinse.” 6. Have someone open the front door of your home. Make sure that there are no people between the bathroom and the front door. 7. Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids. 8. The cat will now rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run outside where he’ll dry himself off, cat-fashion. 9. Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean. “Hope this helps!” Sincerely, Rover. “Blessed is the man who nds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for it is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. It is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with it.” Proverbs 3:13-15.Valentine’s Day: Made in the Image of the Greatest LoverBY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchValentine’s Day is few days away (you have a few days to get something for someone specialdon’t forget!). It‘s one of those holidays rooted among the early Christians (“holiday” itself comes from “holy day”). Valentine was a clergyman arrested, tortured, and beheaded under the Roman emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. Before being executed, he brought healing to his jailor’s daughter. Such an act, of course, was unusual; doing good for the very people who are being hurtful, threatening, executing those you help, working against everything you stand for. This is the kind of love we don’t see too often today as well. It deserves to be celebrated. It is about love; sel ess love, outpouring love, love that expects or gets no return, love that makes no demands, love that is different than the kind seen in the tabloids or gossiped about. The love Valentine knew was that outpouring kind of offering to another; a human who was suffering and an inward call to help. It had to do with making another person whole; that’s a big part of what love is all about. Paul writes about it in 1 Corinthians 13; patient, kind, not self-seeking, keeps no record of wrongs, protects, trusts, hopes, perseveres – and then adds “love never fails (v.8)” I believe such relationships do not come overnight; they require work on the part of all who ever attempt to have true love – but it’s worth it. It’s not easy to be patient, it’s dif cult to return kindness for provocations, human beings expect at least something in return for their efforts. People who hurt us make us wary and untrusting, and the temptation to throw in the towel is always around. Then, there are those who seem to make it – no easy road, no stress-free life, no arriving at some plateau and saying that there is no more work required. The First Epistle of John deftly intertwines our love and God’s love. He notes that “perfect love casts out fear, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear…(ch 4, vs 18)” Lovers speak openly to those they love and who love them; they share intimacies and are not afraid of ridicule, They can expect understanding of their side of things when nobody else seems to do so, They can know there will be support when they’re about to undertake something that may have serious consequences. They can accept each other’s imperfections and are happy to be called on to help. These certainly are the things that cast out fear; and are worth seeking. Valentine must have known these things; he lived by them and why he gave himself is remembered these eighteen hundred years later. Its work; but it’s still worth seeking. The world still seeks it. When we get to see it, then we know “God is love(1 John 4:8)” We, who are made in His image are meant to be, give and share love too. Truly worth being and having! 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 7 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee February 9, 2012 BY MARK KINGWhen I hear the words “world famous,” the rst thing that comes to mind is this awesome lake that is my back yard: Lake Okeechobee. If you want to catch a lot of bass or are looking for that trophy bass for bragging rights, then Lake Okeechobee is the place to come shing now. Catching 50 bass a day is not uncommon and most of them are from three to seven pounds. We have been live bait shing these past few weeks w ith wild shiners -we have been using up over six dozen shiners in as little as four hours. Or, if catching bass on arti cial lures is your thing, then 35 pounds with just ve sh should be as well. That would be enough to win a one-day tournament, so, I hope that catches your attention. If catching bass is a passion of yours, now is the time to plan a trip to Lake Okeechobee where the weather is hot and so is the shing. As I mentioned before, the live bait shing has been crazy and the lake is shing so big right now; that means you can catch bass almost anyw here. I have been shing areas like Long Point, Bay Bottom, East Wall, West Wall, and up around Turner Cove area. If the wind will let you sh on the outside grass closest to the main lake, then that is where you should be shing. When shing on windy days, just move in off the main lake far enough to be able to sh and where the water is clean. With the full moon almost upon us the bass are making a push toward spawning areas. We have been catching a lot of buck bass and the big females should be close behind moving in to spawning areas. I’m not sure how far back in off the main lake these bass will move but, as of now, they are not back in too far off the main lake. The FLW tournament this week should be awesome with hopes of breaking last year’s record of more than 106 pound of bass with a limit each day of ve bass for four days. Charlie’s Worms Zipper Dipper has been my bait of choice for my arti cial trips with a Charlie’s Flippin’ Bug being my next choice. Make sure you are using braided line and a good heavy action rod to get these sh out of the heavy cover. The crappie shing is still about the same with most just catching a few a day. I have started to ll up my calendar for tarpon shing in the Keys during May and June. If you are looking to catch a giant tarpon give me a call and we can get a trip set up. Until next week good luck, tight lines, and I hope to see everyone on the water soon. Capt. Mark King is a full time guide out of Roland Martin’s Marina and Resort in Clewiston. Give him a call at 863-677-0983 or go to www.markking shing.com or www.tarponinthekeys.com to book a trip. BY RANDY SMITH SFWMDSouth Florida Water Management District (SFW MD) meteorologists reported today this was the driest January in the agency’s 16-county region since recordkeeping began in 1932. Water levels remain adequate at this time for regional water supply because of the signi cant boost from record October rainfall. “While January did set a record, it is still early in the dry season,” said Susan Sylvester, SFWMD Chief of the Water Control Operations Bureau. “We are closely monitoring water levels because the entire region is likely to experience several more months of dry weather.” For January, a total of 0.16 inches of rain fell across the District, representing only 8 percent of the average for this time of year, or a de cit of 1.77 inches. The entire region received below-average rainfall for the month. The second driest January w as recorded in 1949, with 0.21 inches of rainfall across the District. Unlike the water supply impacts from record dry conditions in 2010, water levels so far this dry season have been receding slowly. Lake Okeechobee stood at 13.26 feet NGVD today, which is below its historical average for this time of year. The 730-square-mile lake, which serves as a backup w ater supply for South Florida, received a major boost from October rains and remains above its w ater shortage management zone. Below-average rainfall is forecast for the rest of the dry season. As a result, a water shortage w arning remains in place across the entire 16county District and residents are reminded to conserve water and follow the Year-Round Landscape Irrigation Rule. Year-Round Landscape Irrigation Rule Adopted by the SFWMD Governing Board in November 2009, the Year-Round Landscape Irrigation Rule established a permanent two-day-aw eek landscape watering schedule throughout the region, with a three-day-a-week provision for some counties. Utilizing the rule’s exibility, some city and county governments have adopted alternative landscape irrigation ordinances or emergency actions based on local water demands or system limitations. For many areas, landscape watering schedules remain the same under year-round conservation measures as they were under water shortage restrictions. Details on landscape irrigation limits are available by contacting your local government or by visiting www.sfwmd.gov/2days. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Appointments are strongly encouraged. or where a high school football player inks his commitment. It ultimately only matters that the player in question gets an opportunity to live out his childhood dream and earn a college degree down the line.Glades Central Raiders sends eight to collegeAlmost all of the National Signing Day excitement in our area happened at Belle Glade’s Boys and Girls Club Gymnasium. The area’s largest group of signees was all smiles as they sat at the signing table, with many of their friends, family, teachers, coaches, and administrative staff happily looking on. The special ceremony lasted for less than an hour, with the following Glades Central high school seniors of cially announcing where they w ill go on to play college football: Dominique Gibson – Wake Forest University Jaime Wilson – Western Michigan University Cre’von LeBlanc – Florida Atlantic University Jatavis Brown – University of Akron John Brockman III – Point University Isaiah Rodriguez – Campbellsville University Tavious Bridges – Shorter University Greg Davis – Bacone College Gibson on his college commitment to Wake Forest: “It’s a great feeling because deep down in heart, that’s where I want to be,” Gibson said. “I w ouldn’t have it no other way.” Meanwhile, LeBlanc took the time to thank Florida Atlantic for giving him an opportunity. “FAU showed me love and it felt like being at home,” LeBlanc said. “FAU really wanted me, even when they knew of my past situation. They stood strong and showed me that I was wanted, no matter what. I feel like it was God’s will for me to go there. I know that everything happens for a reason and I just thank God for another chance.” Wilson touched brie y on why he selected W estern Michigan over Marshall, Memphis and FAU as his top choice. “It seemed like everyone at Western Michigan is like a tight-knit family up there,” Wilson said of his Western Michigan visit, which happened less than a week before National Signing Day. “I feel like I’ll have a great chance to contribute there. Of all the schools that offered me, Western Michigan showed me the most interest.” Brockman III, who led the area with nine interceptions for his senior season, talked about his decision to play college football for Point University, a Division I-AA school in Atlanta. “It’s a good t for me and I feel like I’ll be a big success to their program,” said Brockman III, w ho had offers from Division I schools Nebraska, Illinois and Texas A & M. “I believe God chose this for me. Being at a small school allows me to get close to my professors if I need any help. I love the environment there and it’s not too far from home.” Other Glades Central players that may nd college homes in the near future include the senior collective of Brandon Rodriguez (the brother of Isaiah Rodriguez), Harry Fleurant, Don’Kevious J ohnson and James Hawk, to name just a few. More than likely, Glades Central will end up sending at least 12 of its Class of 2012 seniors to college – a very impressive feat. “I was proud of each and every one of them w ho signed,” Glades Central Raiders head coach Roosevelt Blackmon said. “It’s always good when you see young men doing something positive and taking it to the next level. By going to college, it’s a plus for them.”Glades Day’s ‘Stretch’ Williams signs with Mars Hill CollegeBefore 9 p.m. on January 31 – less than 24 hours before National Signing Day – it appeared that no one from Glades Day School would be at the signing table. But Mars Hill College, a Division II school in North Carolina, gave Glades Day Gators senior wideout/defensive back Steven ‘Stretch’ Williams a call and offered him a full scholarship. It was the rst and only college offer for Williams, who was Glades Day’s top receiver and defensive back for the past two years. “It came late at night, so I didn’t know if I was going to sign on National Signing Day or not,” Williams said. “God willing, the coaches there told me they were going to give me an opportunity to play at Mars Hill College. I had other schools looking at me, but I was very happy and grateful to get a chance to visit the school. The atmosphere and layout of the school is very nice. The coaches at Mars Hill made me feel like I was at home there.” Williams took the time to thank his high school coach, Pete Walker, for the chance to move on to the next level. “He’s like a second father to me on and off the football eld,” Williams said of Walker. “He worked with me on my techniques and gave me an opportunity to shine. When I came to Glades Day, I was timid and wasn’t as physical as I needed to be. Coach Walker helped me improve on all that, as well as my route running skills. He stayed persistent with me and got my hands right. I appreciate Coach Walker for having the opportunity to play high school football at Glades Day.” Walker spoke on Williams’s commitment to Mars Hill College. “Steven has been a great kid his whole time at Glades Day,” Walker said. “He’s made some big plays for us over the years. He’s one of our student body leaders and treats everybody with respect. We’re very happy for him and we’re going to miss him.” Glades Day may have two more of its players signing to a college pretty soon, as offensive lineman Colton Coates may either join Williams at Mars Hill College or attend Webber International University. Coates may even decide to play college baseball at one of the two schools, according to Walker. Meanwhile, Glades Day linebacker Corey Garcia will be choosing between Ivy League school Dartmouth and Navy for an opportunity to play college football. Walker said that Garcia is also considering the option to walk on at Florida State. “Anytime we’re able to help these guys go of f to college, we’re very excited about that,” Walker said.Pahokee’s senior football players may sign laterFor the rst time in recent memory, no one from the Pahokee Blue Devils inked college commitments on National Signing Day. That did not surprise head coach Blaze Thompson in an y way. “We should have a few signing before the school year is out,” Thompson said. “We’ll see what happens.” Thompson referenced the late possible college signings to how the Blue Devils performed on the eld for the 2011 season. “We did not distinguish ourselves,” Thompson said bluntly. “It is what it is.” The following high school seniors from Pahokee may nd college homes in the near future: Shaquille Burroughs, Clint Everett, Keith Patrick, Cordel Walkes, Shaquille White, Jontavious Worthen “Making it to the next level is not easy,” Burroughs said. “It’s actually a blessing, if you as k me. When we get to sign to a school, it will feel good to know we’ll be living our dreams out.” Thompson offered some parting thoughts on how his senior players performed this past season. “I’m disappointed in how our season turned out, but I’m not disappointed in our players,” Thompson said. “The seniors have worked hard and they perform pretty well in the classroom. I just want them to have an opportunity to play at a college somewhere where we’ll know they’ll be taken care of.” 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 and Lisa Valeri. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Hendry and Glades CountiesBY PAT DOBBINS Hendry/Glades Health DepartmentsAccording to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. About every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary (heart) event and about one every minute will die from one. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Hendry and Glades counties. Here are a few tips to help you to become “heart healthy”. Eat a healthy diet. Choosing healthier meals and snacks can help you avoid heart disease and its complications. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Eating foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in ber can help prevent high blood cholesterol. Limiting salt or sodium in your diet can also lower your blood pressure. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese can increase your risk for heart disease. To determine whether your weight is in a healthy range, healthcare providers often calculate a number called the body mass index (BMI). Sometimes your waist and hip measurements are used to measure your excess body fat. Exercise regularly. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight and lower your cholesterol and blood pressure. It is suggested that adults should engage in moderate-intensity exercise for at least 30 minutes each day. Quit smoking or don’t start smoking. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease. So, if you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, quitting will lower your risk for heart disease. Talk to your healthcare provider about ways you can quit smoking. Limit alcohol use. Avoid drinking too much alcohol, which can cause high blood pressure. Prevent or Treat Your Medical Conditions: If you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes, there are steps you can take to lower your risk for heart disease. Have your cholesterol checked. Your health care provider should test your cholesterol levels regularly. Talk with your healthcare provider about this simple blood test. Monitor your blood pressure. High blood pressure has no symptoms, so be sure to have it checked on a regular basis. Manage your diabetes. If you have diabetes, closely monitor your blood sugar levels. Talk with your health care provider about treatment options. Take your medications. If you’re taking medication to treat high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes, follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully. Always ask questions if you don’t understand something. Talk with your health care provider. You and your healthcare provider can work together to prevent or treat the medical conditions that lead to heart disease. Discuss your treatment plan regularly and bring a list of questions to your appointments. Know your signs and symptoms. Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, however, most heart attacks start slowly and you may only feel mild pain or discomfort. Many people aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening: Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. Shortness of breath. May occur with or without chest discomfort. Other signs. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness. A healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons you have to ght heart disease. Choose lean meats and poultry without skin. Prepare them without added saturated and trans fat. Select fat-free, one percent fat, and low-fat dairy products. Cut back on foods with partially hydrogenated vegetable oils to reduce trans fat in your diet. Cut back on foods high in dietary cholesterol. Try to eat less than 300mg of cholesterol each day. Cut back on beverages and foods with added sugars. Select and purchase foods lower in salt/sodium. If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation. That means no more than one drink per day i f you’re a woman and two drinks per day if you’re a man. Keep an eye on your portion sizes. Physical activity in your daily life is an important step to preventing heart disease. You can take a few simple steps at home, at work, and at play to increase the amount of physical activity in your life. Start taking steps to be heart-healthy. BY MICKIE ANDERSON UFFor years, scientists have tried to use environmentally friendly fungi to control re ant infestations. But the ants' social behaviors such as hauling their dead off to what entomologists call "bone y ards" in isolated spots away from the nests have prevented commercial development of this method. The fungus can't spread if infected ants are continually separated from healthy ones. A new University of Florida study shows, however, that there may be a way to make insectkilling fungi a more potent weapon against re ants and other pests. Scientists with UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences modi ed the fungus so that it produces a peptide that helps regulate the re ants' nervous system. The modi ed fungus was ve to eight times as effective in killing re ants, but had no increased effect on an unrelated insect, the greater wax moth. The researchers were surprised to learn that the modi ed fungus had another bene t it disrupted the ants' undertaker-like behavior. The study was published this month by the online journal PLoS One. "Potentially, it's important because if you can disrupt this behavior, you may be able to increase the ef cacy of the fungus in the nest, because they won't take the dead out and you can spread the infection throughout the nest better. In theory, you could use the same amount of fungus and it would be more effective," said Nemat Keyhani, a UF associate professor of microbiology and cell science and the study's lead author. Keyhani also led a research team in a similar study of mosquitoes, publishing the ndings in this month's issue of Nature Biotechnology. In that study, the scientists tested Beauveria bassiana against mosquitoes, modifying the fungus so that it produced another peptide, called TMOF (trypsin-modulating oostatic factor). This hormone, discovered by a UF/IFAS entomologist, is produced by mosquitoes. It stops the insects from producing a crucial digestive enzyme called trypsin. Though TMOF is important for the normal digestive process, too much of it causes mosquitoes to starve, unable to take nutrients from food. Keyhani said the goal of both studies was to show that a host molecule, such as a peptide or hormone that an insect uses for a normal physiological process, can be used against it, disrupting that process and making it more susceptible to microbial infections. In the mosquito study, combining the fungus with TMOF reduced the survival time of the mosquitoes by 25 percent, reduced females' trypsin activity by 50 percent, and resulted in female mosquitoes laying 40 percent fewer eggs. "So we've now proven the concept in two different ways one against mosquitoes and one against re ants," Keyhani said. Roberto Pereira, an IFAS research associate scientist in urban entomology and a member of the re ant research team, said the ndings are promising, but more study will be needed to determine commercial viability. "We would probably want to enhance mortality quite a bit more than we did," he said. "But even a small change in ef cacy of the pathogen in causing disease or its ability to spread can cause it to go from a weak pathogen to one that overwhelms the host population." The ability to show that the modi ed fungus can target a speci c insect population is also important, he said. Besides Keyhani and Pereira, the re ant research team included Yanhua Fan of Southwest University in Chongqing, China; Engin Kilic, a postdoctoral student in microbiology and cell science at UF and George Casella, a UF distinguished professor in IFAS statistics. In addition to Keyhani and Fan, the mosquito research team included former UF entomolog y professor Dov Borovsky and UF graduate student Chloe Hawkings and UF postdoctoral fellow Almudena Ortiz-Urquiza. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 SHEWMAKERANIMALHOSPITAL1095 N.
