After 52 years at the helm of Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida, its founder, President and Chief Executive Of cer George H. Wedgworth announced that he has stepped down from day-to-day duties at its annual membership meeting last week. He will remain chairman of its Board of Directors. Wedgworth has guided the Cooperative from its inception to what the Cooperative is today: a vertically integrated sugar cane operation that jointly owns the largest cane sugar re ning company in the world. "From the novel idea of organizing the Cooperative to overseeing its construction, the expansions and integration into the cane sugar re ning business, George was the driving force," said John Hundley, vice president and secretary-treasurer of the Board. "He directed every facet of the Cooperative with honesty, integrity and resolve. His leadership and his legacy are the basic foundation of the Cooperative and will be carried out by the new leadership." The Board appointed Antonio (Tony) Contreras Jr. as President and Chief Executive Of cer and Jose F. Alvarez, as Chief Operating Of cer and General Manager of the Cooperative. Recognizing that these are big shoes to ll, the membership of the Cooperative welcomed this transition as a positive move in ful lling its commitment to providing economic growth and performance for the 46 growerowners and the more than 550 people in the Cooperatives workforce. Contreras previously served as the Executive Vice President-Marketing and Re ning Operations at the Cooperative. He also serves as Co-President and Chairman of the Board of American Sugar Re ning, Inc. (ASR). that the Cooperative jointly owns with Florida Crystals Corporation. Contreras has been in the sugar industry for 37 years and at the Cooperative for 28 years. A native of Cuba, Contreras earned a B.S. in business administration from the University of Miami and a Masters in international marketing from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, AZ. Contreras sits on the board of the Florida Gove School construction project nears construction periodAs a $28 million project to rebuild Gove Elementary School in Belle Glade draws closer to reality, the teams behind the construction project are inviting local public comment on the plans. Today, Hedrick Brothers Construction leading a team that includes MPA Architects, Tercilla Courtemanche Architects and Asset Builders hosts a community meeting tonight, Jan. 26, at St. John Baptist Church beginning at 7:30 p.m. The goal is to showcase the continuing work on the school project and provide further information on how the construction and modernization of the school will be handled. A much more ferocious and roaring version of Pioneer Park’s bear mascot appears on the currency which will be passed out to students at the discretion of teachers. The goal is to reinforce good behavior and promote a feeling of success among our students. The program will be an incentive for all students to strive to improve in their behavior, attention and academic efforts including over-all learning growth. The reward system will serve as a positive deterrent for off-task behavior. On Fridays students will be able to make purchases with their Sugar Bear Bucks from teacher treasure boxes and the school’s prize bin. Washington Dreams A group of our patrols, some of whom haven’t ventured much farther than Belle Glade, left for Washington, D.C. on Friday, Jan. 13. They were led through the Capitol by our caring and capable chaperones, Kelvin Johnson, Parent Liaison and Wanda Richardson, teacher. The students returned with exciting memories of the trip. They reported that it was chilly and fun. Mr. Johnson and Ms. Richardson noted that they went a week ahead of an anticipated snow storm that may snow travelers in. Digging up Bones Third, Fourth and Fifth graders participated in a very exciting Science lesson and fossil dig under the direction of Jurassic Parts. Jurassic Parts is part of the STEAM team: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math with the Palm Beach County Cultural Council. This fabulous dream team has partnered with our school to enhance our students’ educational experience. Recently, the students learned about fossils and then were able to dig for their own fossils and keep them. If you have any questions about Jurassic Parts you can visit their site at www.GoJurassicParts.com Chris and Alissa Koch, (pronounced like Coke) are a husband and wife team who truly make learning Science an exciting, real life experience for students and teachers. Combining the opportunity to touch and examine fossils, conduct experiments, watch hair-raising demonstrations, Jurassic Parts mixes humor and a hands-on interactive segment for students to truly inspire a love of Science. The students were able to look at many genuine South Florida fossils, various indigenous animal skulls and bones, including modern day and extinct animals. An entire large table was lled with these rare artifacts. During their own fossil digs, the students sometimes found what looked like rocks and learned they might be holding shark’s teeth, sting ray barbs, mouth plates, turtle shell fragments, spurs and various other bone pieces, while learning how to distinguish them from rocks. The students were very excited to keep their discoveries. At a later date, as a follow-up activity, students will celebrate and memorialize their science experiences with an art link, the STEAM team sends visual arts and drama teachers to help the students make a work of art either visually or as a dramatic presentation, both of which will spark the desire for learning among their schoolmates. SAC Meeting and Parent Night Pioneer Park’s School Advisory Council met on Thursday, Jan. 19, to vote on the disbursement of school recognition money. This money was awarded by the Department of Education because the school’s overall grade improved after the FCAT scores came in. Principal Adam Miller gave the principal’s report, advising parents on the latest diagnostic score results and actions that will be taken to help students and teachers target and maximize learning time and zoom in on speci c student needs. The Palm Beach County Cultural Council’s STEAM representative, Alyx Kellington, also presented. She informed parents on the fun, handson learning activities they bring to the school to engage the students in an enthusiastic in-theeld learning format and how they follow-up in another classroom setting with an art component to enrich and further strengthen students’ new knowledge. YEA & DNA Pioneer Park’s YEA program will be enlisting the South Florida Science Museum to generate students’ enthusiasm for Science during the after school hours. The South Florida Science Museum’s DNA & Heredity Science in Motion unit is a four-week course designed to provide inquiry-based Science curriculum with hands-on experiences in a state-of-the-art mobile lab. The students will also learn about the Underground Railroad with artists from the Centers for Creative Education while making quilts. Students will help design and create the quilt while discussing the Underground Railroad. The commemorative quilt will be displayed at the school site and the students will also make keepsake reference books. Columbia University’s Teachers College Consultant Once again, the insightful and delightful Ms. Emily Deliddo visited Pioneer Park as a Staff Developer from Columbia University’s Teacher’s College in N.Y.C. Ms. Deliddo and a core team of administrators, reading coach and district staff observed the teachers during their lessons and guided reading small groups. Ms. Deliddo coached in with groups and book clubs and later led a debrie ng in the Learning Team Room. The Citizen’s Police Academy (C.P.A.) provides a mechanism for educating the public about the criminal justice system. The main goal of the academy is to partner with the community, explain the operations of the Sheriff’s Of ce and encourage citizens to undertake measures to prevent crime victimization. The Sheriff’s Of ce C.P.A. will meet once a week on Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Ofce Western Substation located at 38840 State Road 80, in Belle Glade. The course consists of eight weekly sessions. A course review and graduation ceremony completes the Academy. A light meal will be provided between 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. each class. Nikolits, CFA, is happy to announce that the Property Appraiser’s Of ce is now accepting applications for its 2012 College Scholarship program. The Property Appraiser’s Of ce presents $1,000 scholarships each year to ve college-bound students. Since 1993, the Property Appraiser’s Of ce has awarded $99,000 in college scholarships. The application can be downloaded from the Property Appraiser’s web site at www.pbcgov. com/PAPA. The deadline to submit the 2012 application is March 31. An Employee Scholarship Committee selects the ve winners. To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be a resident of Palm Beach County, and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. This compares with the national average that has increased 0.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.34/g, according to gasoline price website. The national average has increased 11.8 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 25.3 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. “We saw oil prices fall gently late last week as tensions with Iran seemingly have cooled somewhat,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “I’m certainly hopeful that the recent easing in tensions between Iran and the West continues in coming months, but there are certainly no guarantees and few expectations of such. Having said that, I expect gasoline prices to move very little in the next week, and in some areas of the U.S. gasoline prices may fall this week,” DeHaan said. Gas Prices Rising Weekly The Florida Supreme Court has clari ed a point of tort law unique to the state by ruling that a farm tractor is a “dangerous instrumentality.” The court’s 5-2 ruling on Thursday means that the owner of a farm tractor can be sued for damages when someone else drives the tractor and injures a third person. Only Florida has the “dangerous instrumentality” legal doctrine. It usually applies when someone other than the owner of an automobile is driving and that driver accidentally injures another in a wreck. Chief Justice Charles T. Canady and Justice Ricky Polston dissented. They say the majority decision wrongly expands the law. They noted that golf carts and forklifts have also beenfound to be dangerous instrumentalities. But win the same tournament two years in a row on the same lure and technique and suddenly you have garnered a lot of attention. Such is the case with 29-year-old Brandon Medlock of Lake Placid, Fla., who has now won the EverStart Series Southeast event two years in a row with the same lure. It was an action-packed weekend, featuring many great shermen from around the country. It also marked Brandon McMillan's return to shing following the tragic shooting death of his father in January. McMillan nished in 9th place at the tournament. According to published reports, the younger McMillan said it was his family that urged him to compete to honor the memory of his father. In last year's January event, Medlock posted w eights of 28-01, 16-05 and 19-02 for a three-day total of 63-08. This year he outdid himself with w eights of 17-8, 35-7 and 15-3 for a three-day total of 68-2. The win earned him yet another $35,300 payday. "The rst time I won, I was in shock," Medlock said. "And to win again, now I'm even more in shock. I just don't know what to say." Medlock's main lure is the same lure he used last year the Double-Guard Jig a big 1-ounce jig made by his dad, which features a large 6/0hook defended by a double weedguard for extra balance and weedlessness. Medlock accentuates the big pro le of the bait with a huge hunk of plastic. Last year he used a big salty chunk; this y ear he favored a Gambler Ugly Otter. He ties the jig to 65-pound test Suf x braided line on a Carrot Stix extra heavy ipping stick. When the package is complete, it constitutes a bait that is built for one thing: giant bass. Medlock's winning secret lies, not so much in the bait itself, but in his absolute con dence to throw it all day. It's a con dence rooted in shing many team tournaments on Lake Isokpoga with his dad who convinced the younger Medlock to focus solely on big sh in tournaments. "Istokpoga is a big sh lake," Medlock said. "In order to win tournaments there you have to sh for big bass all the time. And this lake is very similar. I could go out here and throw worms, topwaters, buzzing plastics and catch a bunch of bass, but only two or three of them might be big ones. With that jig I sh for eight bites a day that's my target. If I get eight bites on that jig, ve are going to be big ones. When I come to these tournaments, you won't nd those other lures out on my deck. I know from many years of shing with my dad that if we could get eight bites on that jig, we would probably win the tournament because they're going to be big ones that bite it." Medlock's arsenal for the week included his dad's jig and a Gambler Cricket, which he used to punch mats. And here is where a clari cation needs to made: Medlock does not use the big jig to punch through mats. Instead he uses the jig to pitch into holes and gaps around grass. However, knowing when to punch the Cricket and when to pitch the jig is a critical part of the game. Medlock is shing the upcoming FLW Tour Open in a couple of weeks and understandably does not want to say exactly where or what he is pitching to. But he did say that knowing when the conditions get just right for the jig is imperative. "The rst day I actually punched mats with the cricket that's how I caught the 17 pounds," he explained. "But yesterday and today I used the jig. The annual Great Backyard Bird Count is the perfect opportunity. The event is hosted by Audubon, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Canadian partner Bird Studies Canada. The results provide a snapshot of the whereabouts of more than 600 bird species. Anyone can participate in this free event and no registration is needed. Watch and count birds for at least 15 minutes on any day of the count, Feb. 17-20. Enter your results at www.birdcount. org, where you can watch as the tallies grow across the continent. Great Backyard Bird Count Perfect for New Birders BY MARK KINGLake Okeechobee just keeps producing bass in numbers that are crazy and the situation appears to improve almost daily. Bass from three to ten pounds are being caught on both wild shiners and arti cial lures from Clewiston to the Kissimmee River. On top of the size of the bass, great numbers of them have been off the wall. A few days last week it was not a problem to use up to eight dozen wild shiners by noon. If you have ever thought about shing Lake Okeechobee now would be the time to plan a trip. The Everstart Tournament was held on Lake Okeechobee last week and it took a three-day total of fteen bass that weighed 68.02 pounds. Brandon Medlock from Lake Placid Florida put $35,000 for his winning bag of bass caught on a jig that he and his dad make. The lake is shing big right now, which means you can catch bass in a lot of areas of the lake. I have been shing from Pelican Bay up the Cochran's Pass with great success. The arti cial bite has been a little slow but there are still bass to catch; it just takes a little more time to nd them and get them to bite. The live bait bite on wild shiners has been crazy with 50 sh days being common and some really nice vepound plus bass being caught every day. For arti cial lures, I have been pitching a Charlie's Worms Flippin' Bug along the outside grass. Jigs have also been working pretty well. The idea on both baits is to pitch it in the isolated reed heads and than sh it real slow to get a bite. I have also heard that some bass are being caught on spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits but I have not used either one yet. The bass have had a number of cold fronts push through the past couple weeks that have made them act a little different. But I have never seen the live bait bite like it is right now, taking out three dozen might only get you an hour of shing in the morning. The lake water temperature is in the mid to upper 70s and, as we move toward the full moon in February, be ready to catch bass like we have never seen here on the lake in the past ten years or so. The crappie shing has been pretty good, with areas from Clewiston to Bird Island being good at the southern end of the lake. Fish back in the reeds with jigs or minnows. There have been a lot of boats on the lake and even more on the weekends; a little courtesy for your fellow sherman can go a long ways. This also includes a little courtesy at the boat ramp. Don't block up the ramp while you get your boat ready, there is plenty of room in the parking lot to get ready in. Many of you may not know that I guide for tarpon in the Florida Keys from mid Apr. through June and now is the time to book one of these trips. Dates are lling up fast. We can try to resist it, but there’s nothing we can do to stop it. I’m going to experience the reality of this Friday when I wake up and realize that I have aged a year since I went to bed the night before. My friends are sensitive to my reality. Last year, I only had one candle on my birthday “pie.” I choose believing in their sensitivity rather than the fact that the appropriate number of candles would have cost more than the pie and might have set off the sprinkler system! On the other hand, I also received a walking cane with a horn, magnifying glass, and a sign that stated “over the hill crossing.” We have passed this gift from birthday celebrant to birthday celebrant over this last year. I wonder if I will get it again. These days, I’ve noticed that I’m starting to relate more to some of the old age “gems” that come my way: “When I was young, I made a lot of faces in the mirror. Now that I am older, the mirror is getting even.” “You know you are getting older when you try to straighten out the wrinkles in your socks only to nd you aren’t wearing any.” “Look at it this way. All your life you’ve been taught to respect your elders. Now you are one!” “Don’t despair; next to a Galapagos turtle, you are still a child.” So what do we do with our birthdays? Since w e can’t avoid them, we might as well celebrate them. Birthdays are milestones on our road of life, reminding us that we aren’t home yet, but we are getting closer. Let us welcome them as melodies in our life song. We can’t control how long our life songs last, but we can control how we sing them. Let’s not sing them as funeral dirges! Let us live for the moments we have and sing our life song from our hearts and not just from our lips, giving praise to our God who promises His abiding presence in this cantata we call life. Please consider the following carefully: 1. Lack of study. How can we understand that w hich we do not read and study? Study is hard w ork but study we must if we want to know God’s Word (2 Timothy 2:15). One basic thing that many people don’t understand about the Bible is: There have been Three A ges, namely “The Patriarchal” (Gen. 1-Exodus 20, “The Mosaical” (Exodus John) “The Christian” (Acts-Revelation). You can’t understand w hat applies to us in the Christian Age unless you understand this fact. 2. Cares of the world choke the Word. We become so busy with the things of this world that we nd no time for God’s Word. If we do study, then often we may not apply it to our lives because we are too busy with worldly things. We need to be more concerned with making a life (spiritual life that pleases God) than make a living. (Matthew 13:22) 3. No desire for knowledge. Some simply do not care about God and His Word. They have no spiritual appetite (2 Peter 3:17-18). The eunuch in Acts 8 had a strong desire to know and understand the Word of God and so he was easy to convert (Acts 8:30-31). 4. Many follow preachers, teachers, church leaders and tradition without investigating the Word for themselves. (Matthew 15:14; Romans 16:17-18). 5. Some have closed minds. (Matthew 13:15). 6. Others twist and corrupt the Word of God (2 Peter 3:16; 2 Corinthians 2:17). 7. Sadly, there are some who have no love for truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10-11). 8. Some are living in willful ignorance (2 Peter 3:5). The Bible can be understood by all. Jesus prayed that we all be one (united) by following “The Apostle’s Word” (John 17:20-21). That is the New Testament. Paul plead with the Corinthians to “all speak the same thing and that there be no divisions among them,” (I Cor. 1:10-13). The prayer of Jesus and the plea of Paul can be realized if people would be willing to give up their denominationalism (division) and human tradition and simply be “Christians only.”Tomorrow, The Tomorrow, And The Thief Who Would Steal ItBY REV. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchMark Twain, toward the end of his life, was quoted as saying “I’m an old man and I’ve suffered a great many misfortunes in life, most of which never happened!” When we suffer by worrying, we waste a lot of energy and we miss the point. Among the admonitions given by Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount was “don’t worry!” You can’t add an hour to your life by worrying (Matthew 6:27) and, in fact, the stress of it all may take away hours. With the great teachings offered to us in these Beatitudes; Jesus took time out to look at that human tendency with all of its negative connotations. One of the insurance companies advertises that their clients are protected in case space junk falls on their homes. If they happen to be inside, well that can be very tragic but, at least they’re insured! Something to worry about. The probabilities of being hit by something falling from space are miniscule. But if you’re a worrier, there it is. Hurricane insurance, yes; space junk insurance, no! I knew a lady who started to cry when she told me her daughters were coming to visit. When I asked her why she was crying, she answered, “I’m going to miss them so much when they leave again!” She was being seen by a psychiatrist at that time. Worry steals our energies, our capacities to be happy and enjoy life as it was meant to be, keeps us from focusing on what is important, preoccupies us with petty concerns so that we miss the greater things. It will drain our energies and cloud our vision. I’ve seen people worry about whether or not they’re good enough. The answer is, “Of course not, that’s why Christ died for our sins,” and that is what makes it all right. Be thankful for that, pick up and go on, put the past behind, and look forward to what is to come (Romans 5:8ff, 8:28ff). When the Lord stated, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself (Matthe w 6:34), His “tomorrows” certainly would have included that “ nal tomorrow” that people worr y about too. He added that, “Each day has enough troubles of its own (ibid)” and is aware of what human beings face. There is enough to deal with but don’t add to your burdens by worrying about what He has taken upon Himself to overcome. That, ultimately, makes it all right. Concerns in perspective? Yes. Forethought and preparation about reasonable possibilities? Of course. Planning and anticipation? Essential to good living and a source of happiness. Worry about what might be when the odds are unknown or when there is good evidence that it is unlikely to happen after all? A waste of time and diversion from true living. It’s one of those tools of the devil to steal life and eat up energy; working to make us weaker and limiting God’s gifts. BY MARGARET ENGLAND Hendry-Glades AudubonThe American Bittern is a medium-sized, stocky heron with thick neck and bill. It is often dif cult to see in tall, aquatic vegetation like cattails or sawgrass. This Bittern's brown back, creamy underparts with brown ecking and greenish legs allow it to blend in with its surroundings. When alarmed, this usually solitary bird will "freeze" with its head pointed skyward resembling reeds. In this frozen position it might sway its head when w ind blows the surrounding vegetation in order to avoid being seen. Their ight is stiff and fairly clumsy with rapid wingbeats. The birds can be seen throughout Florida from November through A pril. This winter visitor to Florida has been called "Sun-gazer," "Stake Driver," "Thunder Pump," and "Mire Drum." These names refer to its call w hich is a deep resonant far-carrying "oonk-alunk" which sounds like a bull bellowing or a hydraulic machine during the spring or summer. Their calls are rarely heard in Florida during the w inter. This bittern walks slowly as it forages in shallow ponds and marshes for insects including dragon ies, water beetles, and grasshoppers. They also eat perch, cat sh and other sh was well as crustaceans, amphibians, reptiles and small animals. American Bittern breed in the Northern U.S. and Southern Canada. The female lays one to ve eggs in a nest built in emergent aquatic vegetation that is lined with grasses. She incubates the eggs for 29 days while the male stands guard. The chicks edge after six to seven weeks. The recreation area is now closed, and is expected to remain closed until July while contractors work on constructing a “cut-off” wall inside the dike as part of the rehabilitation project. Any additional traf c on the dike crest poses a safety hazard for visitors and equipment operators. “We want to ensure workers can complete this project in a safe manner,” said Ingrid Bon, forward Project Manager for Herbert Hoover Dike rehabilitation, “closing this access area of the lake helps reduce the possibilit y of an accident involving a member of the general public, and allows the contractor to complete the work in the most ef cient manner possible.” The Canal Point Recreation Area offers a boat ramp, shing, and picnic facilities. Visitors seeking alternate locations of similar facilities are encouraged to use the Port Mayaca North Recreation Area, Paul Rardin Park, or the Torrey Island Recreation Area. The Woman’s Club of Belle Glade recently honored local veterans at the American Legion, Everglades Post 20 in Belle Glade. The Post was presented an historic ag of the United States and a certi cate of authenticity. The ag had been own over the headquarters of Combat Outpost Castle in the Helmand Province of Southern Afghanistan in honor of the Belle Glade Legion Post 20 by the Marines of Dragoons Company, 3D Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, Operation Enduring Freedom. Cpl. Martin Hernandez helped arrange to have a U.S. ag own over his base to honor the contributions of Post 20 in providing monies for the Woman’s Club to help local families who have loved ones serving overseas with the postage costs to mail care packages. Woman’s Club President Sandra Chamblee, together with the mother of Cpl. Hernandez; Elizabeth Cayson, made the presentation. “I am proud of my son and his service to our country. And, grateful to have an organization such as the American Legion Post 20 supporting the Woman’s Club of Belle Glade’s Military Project,” said Mrs. Cayson. Eligible uses of the second mortgage are: down payment assistance, closing costs, and rehabilita tion costs. The study is the rst complete assessment of greening’s economic impact on Florida, said Jack Payne, UF senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources. He called the study an important step in the ght against greening, because it quanti es damages and could show legislators and funding agencies why the invasive disease is one of the state’s biggest challenges. “This study shows plainly just how imperative it is that we nd a cure for citrus greening,” Payne said. “We have dedicated a huge amount of IFAS resources toward that end, and we are very appreciative of the signi cant support our research is receiving from the citrus industry. Growers are the people most obviously impacted, but the study demonstrates that many other Floridians are hurt as well—when fewer oranges are harvested, there are fewer dollars circulating in our state’s economy.” First detected in Florida in 2005, greening causes citrus trees to drop fruit prematurely and eventually kills the trees. The disease is caused by a bacterium, and was rst described in 1919 in China. The bacterium is transmitted by an invasive insect, the Asian citrus psyllid. The study compares actual harvests of oranges used to make juice with projected harvests that would have taken place if greening had never struck Florida groves; it covers the growing seasons from 2006-2007 through 2010-2011. During those ve years, the disease caused substantial crop losses, said citrus economist Tom Spreen, a professor with the UF/IFAS food and resource economics department. The state’s juice-orange harvest for the period was 734 million boxes, and would have been an estimated 951 million boxes without greening, Spreen said. To develop economic impact gures, Spreen and colleague Alan Hodges, an extension scientist with the department, analyzed both scenarios using statistical models and data on the citrus industry and Florida’s economy. To estimate lost revenues and jobs, the economists took into account direct losses to growers, indirect losses to industries af liated with citrus production and the resulting cuts in spending b y employee households and government. When focusing strictly on juice-orange production during that ve-year period, Florida growers lost $1.36 billion in revenues, and 2,125 permanent jobs were lost. Florida Citrus Mutual, the state’s largest citrus grower organization, funded the study. The stud y did not address production of other citrus varieties, such as grapefruit, or oranges sold fresh to consumers, Spreen said. Florida is the nation’s largest citrus producer and the world’s second-largest orange juice producer, after Brazil. The team is taking on the construction of a 121,000 square foot campus, with ve buildings to accommodate 924 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. The construction work will include new classrooms, kitchen and cafeteria, administrative of ces, media center, clinic, playgrounds, other areas, and will be a “green” LEED registered project. Throughout the conceptual planning of the project, the construction management team has reached out to the community for input on the project, beginning with the rst meeting held last July at the Belle Glade Chamber of Commerce. One of the points highlighted has been the preference of local contractors in the construction work – an argument that school board members themselves have pushed for and encouraged. While the nearly $30 million construction project is not expected to create a large number of new jobs, Glades residents argue that any work, even temporary work, is welcomed. The team has also held a number of meetings last year on the subject of contractors qualifying to perform the work necessary for the construction project, urging all local contractors to attend. The work on this end has been aggressively aimed at recruiting local businesses and rms to take a stab at bids for the modernization project. The construction project is scheduled to begin in earnest in March, with an expected date of completion sometime in the 2013 school year. It is not the only construction project scheduled for Belle Glade, however, with Rosenwald Elementary School on schedule to receive a muchneeded modernizing of its facilities in 2014. The Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County’s Loop the Lake for Literacy 2nd annual biking around the lake will be on Saturday, Feb. 25. The event has attracted more interest in its second year. Around 250 participants or more are expected for this year’s event, which has attracted even more sponsors. The event is broken down into ve scenic routes: 15 mile “Sonnet” ride, 31 mile “Short Story” ride, 45 mile “Novel” ride, 62 mile “Classic” ride, and the 115 mile “Epic” Ride, which is the full loop of lake Okeechobee. The rst three rides occur on the dike while the two longer courses w ill take the cyclists through certain portions of traf c. All ve rides will begin and end at Torry Island at the Belle Glade Marina Campground. Darlene Kostrub, Chief Executive Of cer of the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County, has been with the program since its inception. She is excited that the event is in its second year. Last year, the event had 250 participants. With still a month to go, they are nearing 250 participants that have already signed up and the hope that more sign up is high. “This is simply a tremendous event that reaches out to everyone in the community,” said Kostrub. “We have had several more sponsors come onboard this year so the word is going out about this event.” Last year, many people greeted the returning cyclists after the loop. Among them was honorary board member Dolly Hand, who read to the children and presented the cyclists with medals at the end of the day. The goal of the event and the Coalition is is to improve the quality of life in the community by promoting and achieving literacy. Their goal is to ensure that every child and every adult in Palm Beach County becomes a reader and will continue to enjoy the love of reading. They provide services to 30,000 adults, children, and families. Registration is still ongoing for the event.
