Have I? I just want to tell you … I’m so glad you did!” Chamber Board member Karen CorbinWheeler presented the coveted award to Woodham during the 47th Annual Belle Glade Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet, Tuesday, October 25 in the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center. The theater is same venue where Mrs. Woodham has worked as the executive director for 15 years. “Our community is wise to recognize this lovely and beautiful lady as 2011 Citizen of the Year,” said Mrs. Corbin-Wheeler. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Mrs. Woodham’s family moved to Boca Raton where she attended school and graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in statistics. While attending UF, she met and married Brent Woodham, whose family is from Belle Glade. They moved to the area as newlyweds in 1985. Woodham named 2011 Citizen of the Year Signage to direct tourists and visitors to lakeBY JOSE JESUS ZARAGOZA e SunIt’s a question be tting David Copper eld: How do you hide a one trillion gallon-capacity lake? You build a dike around it. Every day, thousands of motorists push past the Glades cities of Clewiston, Belle Glade, South Bay, Moore Haven and Pahokee, on their way someplace else. They drive almost the entire length of the way, drawing the shape of the lake on roads that never reveal what’s hidden beyond the 15-foot barrier of earth and sand. “If you’re in outer space you can clearly see it,” said Ashley Tripp, the president of the LORE Alliance of Palm Beach County. “If you’re looking at satellite imagery you can see it. But if you’re on the ground, you don’t see it.” Ms. Tripp was ecstatic, then, when the legislative delegation voted last week to formally endorse a project to locate much-needed signage promoting the lake on major thoroughfares feeding into the area. Native american history, living culture celebrated at 14th annual eventHosting Seminole and other Native American artisans from across the country, the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum kicks off Native American Heritage Month. This weekend-long American Indian Arts Celebration (AIAC) will be held from Nov. 4-6, at its campus on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation. Widely regarded as an indigenous cultural explosion in the Everglades, this 14th annual event celebrates the traditional and contemporary arts, dance and music of the Seminole, Southeastern and other Indian tribes from across the U.S. Silverwork, beadwork, woodwork, basketry, leatherwork, photography, paintings, jewelry and more are represented at the Indian market. Traditional cultural elements such as storytelling, music and dance will be showcased at the central staging area on the museum’s festival grounds. Previously, AIAC has included entertainers such as Casper and the 602 Band, Micki Free Blues Experience, Grey Wolf Blues Band, Martha Redbone, Keith Secola and the Wild Band of Indians, Bill Miller and other award winning American Indian recording artists. Thrilling dance groups like the Yellow Bird Apache Dancers of Arizona, the AniKituhwa Warriors from North Carolina and the Great Plains Indian Dancers have rounded out prior cultural exhibition dancing. “Native American tribes are vastly different from one another, and AIAC is an ideal event to showcase such rich history and unique living culture in South Florida’s back yard,” said Anne McCudden, director of the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum. “By sharing our diversity and celebrating native traditions, we hope to inspire an appreciation and understanding of the Seminole people and other Native American tribes.” Educational and interactive activities for youth groups and the general public promise to entertain festival-goers by immersing them in Native cultures. The Craft Corner allows children the opportunity to create their own Seminole-inspired craft; the Critter Show presents the up-close, exciting and wild world of animals; the Archaeology tent affords visitors keen insight into the role of archaeology and the Tribal Historic Preservation Of ce; and the Museum Information tent shares exciting Museum news and invites attendees to join the Museum with special introductory offers. The sensational backdrop for this event is the Everglades, just about an hour in any direction from most cities in Broward, Dade, Collier and Hendry counties. The rich blue skies and the miles of sawgrass and hammocks provide the ultimate setting for this amazing celebration of arts, dance, culture and music. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 We Have Expanded!!!Hendry Regional Convenient Care Ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for December 1,2011 at 9:30 a.m.Most people would go to the ends of the earth to find the quality healthcare they need but Hendry Regional Convenient Care is right at your back doorLocal Doctors and Nurse Practitioners on site • Surgical Consultations and Minor Surgical Procedures • Convenient Lab and Imaging Services • Physical and Occupational Therapy • Corporate Health Management • Cardiac Care • MRI & CT Monday to Friday 8 a.m.to 8 p.m. Saturday 8 a.m.to noon Hendry Regional Convenient Care Center 450 South Main Street | LaBelle,FL 33935 (863)-675-2356 Tues.Nov.01,2011Ladies First--Until the Ladies tee off, Men tee off on the Back (Mornings)Wed.Nov.02,2011Buy 2 Sleeves of Titliest // Free Cart for Members OnlyThurs.Nov 03,2011Twilight Thursday 4:00p-6:00pTues.Nov.08,2011Ladies First--Until the Ladies tee off, Men tee off on the Back (Mornings) Wed.Nov.09,2011Buy 2 Sleeves of Titliest // Free Cart for Members OnlyThurs.Nov.10,2011Twilight Thursday 4:00p-6:00pFri.Nov.11,2011Holiday Hours 7:30a-2:00p Veteran's DaySat.Nov.12,2011Brian Haas Memorial Scholarship (HCSO) Tournament Mon.Nov.14,2011Crooked Hook RV Park InvitationalTues.Nov.15,2011 Ladies First--Until the Ladies tee off,Men tee off on the Back (Mornings)Thurs.Nov.17,2011Twilight Thursday 4:00p-6:00pFri.Nov.18,2011Gators vs.The World Sat.Nov.19,2011Jr.Golf Clinic 8:00a-12:00p; Gators vs.The WorldSun.Nov.20,2011Gators vs.The WorldTues.Nov.22,2011Ladies First--Until the Ladies tee off,Men tee off on the Back (Mornings)Thurs.Nov.24,2011Thanksgiving-Closed for Holiday Fri.Nov.25,2011Holiday Hours 7:30a-2:00p Sun.Nov.27,2011SPECIAL EVENT -PAR THREE TOURNAMENT 2:00 PMTues.Nov.29,2011Ladies First--Until the Ladies tee off,Men tee off on the Back (Mornings)Fri.Dec.02,2011GLOW BALL NIGHT GOLF 3 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 3, 2011 Indigenous Cultural Explosion Expected at Museum SUBMITTED PHOTOYellow Bird Apache Dances of Arizona.

BY STATEPOINTKeeping children safe is every parent’s rst concern, which is why traf c safety is so important. During the holidays, when families are traveling and daylight ends sooner, parents need to pay extra attention to traf c hazards at home and on the road. Traf c accidents continue to be the leading cause of death for children ages 1 through 12 in the United States, according to the National Highway Traf c Safety Administration (NHTSA). To help keep families safe this holiday season and year round, NHTSA has teamed up with the animated, preschool television show “Chuggington” to launch the national “Think Safe, Ride Safe, Be Safe!” campaign. The program offers free resources to help parents and kids learn important safety lessons from engaging characters and take a safety pledge online to earn a traf c safety badge. Here are some traf c safety tips for you and your children to remember. Car Safety Everyone should use seat belts, and children should always be in a properly tted car seat. Select a car seat based on your child’s age and size that ts in your vehicle. Keep your child in the car seat as long as they are within the manufacturer’s height and weight requirements and in the back seat until age 12. While winter clothes keep your child warm, they can also interfere with the proper harness t of your child in the car seat. Make sure to place blankets around your child after you fasten the harness. The holidays are a busy time at shopping malls -especially parking lots. Drivers should be on alert for small children when reversing out of a parking space. And don’t leave children unattended near an open trunk, where they can get trapped. School Bus Safety During the holiday season, children may become more rambunctious on the way home from school. Parents should take the time to emphasize year-round rules, like facing forward and obeying the school bus driver. Children should always wait with an adult at the school bus stop. When disembarking, instruct children to take ve giant steps away from the school bus. Then look left, right, and left again before crossing the street. Bike Safety Parents and children should always wear their properly tted bike helmets. Helmets should sit low across the forehead with no more than two nger-widths above the eyebrow, and the chin strap should be buckled snugly. In low-light conditions, make sure that you and your children wear brightly colored clothing and re ective materials. Everyone’s bike should be equipped with a white front light and a red rear light. Children should ride with an adult on bike paths or on the sidewalk -never in the street. More tips and activities can be found at www. chuggington.com/safety. By engaging your children in safety activities and games, you give them the knowledge and lifelong tools to help them stay safe this holiday season and beyond. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Obituaries should be submitted by sending e-mail to obits@newszap.com. WELLS UFAdd one more entry to corn’s list of abilities: helping to biologically control pests. Already a source of food and biofuel, University of Florida researchers report in a new study that corn plants can help sustain populations of small, ying insects known as gall midges in order to control twospotted spider mites. Spider mites are hard-to-manage, major pests of hundreds of ornamental and vegetable crops. In the study, which is published in the current issue of Crop Protection, the highly mobile midge could nd spider mites from more than 23 feet away and controlled more than 81 percent of spider mites on green beans in a greenhouse test. The corn provides a supply of non-pest mites to feed gall midges when spider mite populations run low. This is known as a banker plant system since the corn plant stores, or “banks,” extra prey for midges. And by using the midge to control spider mites, the system reduces the need for pesticides. “Anything you can do to manage spider mites w ithout using pesticides is going to be a major bene t,” said Lance Osborne, an entomologist w ith UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and co-author of the study. Osborne is based at the Mid-Florida Research and Education Center in Apopka. Spider mites quickly build resistance to pesticides and become nearly impossible to control, Osborne said. Growers interested in using this system may contact Osborne for more information by email at lsosborn@u .edu or by calling 407-884-2034, ext. 163. The system was tested on green beans but could be applied to different greenhousegrown crops, such as tomatoes. Study co-authors include graduate assistant Yingfang Xiao, associate professor Jianjun Chen, lab technician Katherine Houben and research assistant Fabieli Irizarry — all with IFAS, and Cindy McKenzie, research entomologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Fort Pierce. The Environmental Protection Agency, the USDA Floriculture and Nursery Research Initiative and UF/IFAS funded the research. New IFAS Study Shows Corn Plants Help Control Major Mite Pest PHOTO / UFA gall midge is shown in this photo. The midge can be used in a corn banker plant system to biologically control twospotted spider mites in greenhouse production settings. Outta’ the WoodsBY TONY YOUNG FWCNovember means the 2011-12 huntin’ season’s in full swing. In this month’s column, I cover most everything you need to know about general gun, fall turkey, quail and gray squirrel, snipe and the second phase of mourning and white-winged dove seasons. The rst thing you need to do is pick up a $17 Florida resident hunting license. Nonresidents pay $46.50 for a 10-day license or $151.50 for 12 months. If you plan to hunt one of Florida’s many wildlife management areas (WMAs), you’ll also need a $26.50 management area permit, but don’t forget to study the brochure for the speci c area you plan to hunt because dates, bag limits and rules differ greatly from area to area. You can get these brochures at the tax collector’s of ce near each WMA, or you can download them from MyFWC.com/Hunting. You can buy your license and permits by calling 888-HUNT-FLORIDA or online at www. .wildlifelicense.com. Have your credit card ready. You also can purchase them from a tax collector’s of ce and most retail outlets that sell hunting and shing supplies. The general gun season runs Nov. 5 Jan. 22 in Zone C; Dec. 3 Feb. 19 in Zone B; and in Zone A the second phase of general gun season runs Nov. 19 Jan. 1. In Zone D, it starts Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 24) and lasts four days through Nov. 27. Two weeks later, the season reopens Dec. 10 and runs through Feb. 19. Hunters can take bucks having at least one antler 5 inches or longer, but anyone hunting deer in Florida must have the $5 deer permit. On priv ate lands, the daily bag limit for deer is two, but during some quota hunts on WMAs, the bag limit is only one deer. In some cases, there are antler restrictions, so read the particular WMA brochure before hunting. On private lands, hunters can take wild hogs y ear-round with no bag or size limits. On most but not all WMAs, there’s also no bag or size limit on wild hogs, and hunters can take them during any hunting season except spring turkey. A gain, check the WMA brochure to be certain. The highly anticipated antlerless deer season, often called “doe week,” is Nov. 19-25 (Thanksgiving week) in zones A and C, and Dec. 26 Jan. 1 (Christmas week) in zones B and D. During doe week, the daily bag limit is one buck and one doe, or two bucks. You may not take two does in one day as you can during archery season, and spotted fawns are never legal game. By the way, WMAs do not have an antlerless deer season. If you hunt with deer dogs anywhere in Florida, special rules and registration requirements may apply, so call the FWC for details. Fall turkey season in Zone A is Nov. 19 Jan. 1. In zones B and C, it runs Dec. 3 Jan. 29 and Nov. 5 Jan. 1, respectively. And in Zone D, fall turkey season is Nov. 24-27 and Dec. 10 Jan. 15, except for Holmes County, where there is no fall turkey season. Only bearded turkeys and gobblers are legal game, and you must have a turkey permit ($10 for residents; $125 for nonresidents) to hunt them. The bag limit is one bird per day, and a total of two during the archery, crossbow, muzzleloading gun and fall turkey seasons combined. Quail and gray squirrel season runs statewide Nov. 12 March 4. There’s a daily bag limit of 12 for each, but shooting fox squirrels is against the law. Shooting hours for deer, turkeys, quail and gray squirrels is a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset. All legal ri es, shotguns, muzzleloaders, bows, crossbows and pistols are legal for taking these resident game animals during the general gun, antlerless deer, fall turkey, and quail and gray squirrel seasons. Florida snipe hunting ranks second in the nation for the number of birds harvested each year. That season runs Nov. 1 Feb. 15 statewide. The second phase of the mourning and white-winged dove season also comes in this month and runs Nov. 12-27. Shooting hours for migratory game birds are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. The bag limit for snipe is eight; for doves, the bag limit is 15. You must get a no-cost migratory bird permit if you plan to hunt snipe, doves or any other migratory game birds. The FWC even provides an online “Dove Hunter’s Hotline” that gives up-to-date information on Florida’s public dove elds. The address is MyFWC.com/Dove, and it’s updated every Thursday throughout the dove season. Information includes dove densities, previous week’s harvests and eld conditions. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 HERE’S MY C HERE’S MY C ARD! America is facing an epidemic of diabetes, a serious disease that damages the body and shortens lives. Diabetes is a disease where the body doesn’t produce insulin or doesn’t use insulin properly. Insulin is a hormone that your body needs to convert sugar, starches and other foods into energy. There are two different kinds of diabetes. Type-1 diabetes is when the body fails to produce insulin. People with this type have to get daily shots of insulin to survive. Type-2 diabetes is when the body fails to make enough insulin or properly use insulin. About 90 percent to 95 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes are Type-2 diabetes. Typically, Type-2 diabetes develops after the age of 45. Some of the signs of diabetes can include excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, increased tiredness, increased irritability and blurry vision. Sometimes family history plays a part in whether a person develops diabetes, but other factors such as being overweight or lack of exercise appear to play a role as well. Diet, exercise and new medicines can prevent or delay much of the illness and complications of diabetes. Did you know that there is also something known as pre-diabetes? Pre-diabetes is a blood glucose level higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Ask your doctor about getting tested. If your number is between 110-125, then you are in the pre-diabetes range. Keep in mind that a ve to 10 percent reduction in body weight produces a 58 percent reduction in diabetes. Take action now. Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. (Dance, walk the dog, play with your kids!) Try to eat healthier and educate yourself on proper serving sizes. When a person has diabetes, they also have an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, or blindness. There is no known cure for diabetes, but there is treatment. If you already have diabetes, managing the disease can lower your risk of complications such as kidney failure, heart disease and stroke, blindness, and amputations of legs and feet. With nearly 26 million children and adults in America living with diabetes, and another 79 million at high risk for developing type-2 diabetes, the disease is taking a devastating physical, emotional and nancial toll on our country. Recent numbers reported by the CDC state that every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes and diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. Recent estimates project that as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050 unless we take steps to stop diabetes. For more information about diabetes go to www.cdc.gov/diabetes/pubs/factsheet11.htm or www.diabetes.org. November is National Diabetes Awareness Month BY MARK KINGWow, the Lake Okeechobee water level is up to 13.47 feet above sea level! Water is still pouring in from the Kissimmee basin and, with the rains that we have been receiving, we are now at the same water level as we were this time last year. Just three weeks ago, we were worried if we would have enough water to sh the main lake and not the rim canal. Now we have plenty of water and are getting more. The other good news is that the bass are everywhere here on the south end of the lake and the shing just keeps getting better everyday. I have been shing from the Monkey Box to Pelican Bay and catch bass almost anywhere I stop to sh. This past week, my clients had some wind and rain to deal with but still enjoyed catching good numbers of bass on both arti cial lures and wild shiners out on the main lake. Even though everyone knows I would rather use arti cial lures, the shiner shing was really good last week. Especially for a nine-year-old boy I had on the boat that caught bass all morning in the rain Saturday. My lure of choice this past week was the new Big Dipper made by Charlie’s Worms in junebug color. I rig this bait with a 6/0 wide gap hook and sh it on 65 pound test Diamond braided line. A good heavy action rod will also be needed to get the bass out of the heavy cover. Some of the other lures that I used this past week have been a smaller version of the Big Dipper called the Zipper Dipper and a Salt Stick O also made by Charlie’s Worms. Junebug has been my color choice with both cases. I did hear of some bass being caught on 10-inch worms and on jigs also in the scattered outside grass. Since we are now shing in the grass and reeds, I have spooled all my reels with braided line and changed out my medium action rods for heavier action ones. Most of the areas that I shed last week look awesome now. With the water level coming back up, we will be able to get way back in the grass to sh all winter. The water is clear in most areas and, as some trails are cut back in the grass in most areas, we should be able to sh no matter what the wind does to us. The water temperature this past week was in the lower seventies in the morning and, if it remains this cool, we should have a few bass move in to spawn this next full moon phase. It will only get better as we move into the season here on Lake Okeechobee. Until next week, good luck, tight lines, and I hope to see everyone out on the lake soon. Capt. Know the Limits!BY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchWhen I was recovering from an illness, I encountered a young man who asked how I was doing and I told him. He went on to say my problem came from drinking bad water. Now, by chance, his family was selling water puri ers and he had all of the answers to my health problems! I told him, politely, to "get lost" in as gentle a way as I could phrase it. One evening, I was invited to listen to a lecture on a food system that was supposed to clean out my interior and set the stage for healthy living ever after. I would need to buy the powders, etc. When the lecture was concluded and I was asked to sign up, I advised the presenters that I would discuss the matter with my doctor before changing diets. Somebody once said, "When you're a hammer, every problem looks like a nail!" And it's true. There is that classical story about the blind men examining an elephant. Depending on what part of the elephant was touched, it looked like a long snake to the one that touched the tail, it looked like a wall to the one who touched the side, it looked like a thick pipe to the one that touched the trunk. Each brings his insights but thinks he has the whole picture. When things are different than they seem, it seems embarrassing to call for help or to consider that there may be more involved than is understood. One minister from another tradition told me about his work for an advanced degree and how he began to see the place of history in the formation of faith. A whole new world had been opened to him; how what was practiced came into being and how it now made more sense. Yes! I was able to refer him to some web sites and sources. I also learned about his understanding of what worship is about and the contributions made to those who followed it. Remember Job? He has problems, serious problems and bad problems. There were those three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar who had the "answers." One attributed Job's problems to sin by telling him that if he'd only stop sinning all would be well. Unfortunately, that didn't t with the reality of Job's life. Another told him that he was really getting off lucky and that he deserved even more punishment than he was getting. Job couldn't buy that explanation either. It didn't make sense. A third admonishment, "don't question it," is of no value. How can things change if there is no way to understand what is needed or how they got to be as they are now? The good helper will recognize he may not have all of the answers, may need to consult or refer, may have to acknowledge that there are other ways of looking at things. When that happens, help comes, healing takes place, faith is restored, hope is found, love is given. A Political ComebackBY PASTOR JOHN HICKS First United Methodist ChurchWill Rogers stated, "I don't make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts." In that spirit, I share the following to help us get through the dreaded political commercials heading our way. A politician is hit by a truck and dies. He arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter who states, "We have a problem. We seldom see politicians around these parts, so we're not sure what to do with you. We will have you spend one day in Hell and one in Heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity." And with that, St. Peter escorts the politician to the elevator and he goes down to Hell. The doors open and he nds himself standing in the midst of his friends and other politicians who had worked with him. Everyone runs to greet him and they reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at expense of the people. They play golf and dine on lobster. Also present is the Devil, who is very friendly. They're having such a good time that before he realizes it, it's time to go. Everyone gives him a big hug and waves while the elevator rises. The elevator door reopens at Heaven. Twenty-four hours pass with the politician joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns. "Well, you've spent a day in Hell and another in Heaven. Now, choose your eternity." He re ects for a minute, then answers: "I would never have thought it, and Heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in Hell." So he goes back down. The doors of the elevator open and he is in the middle of a barren land covered with waste. All his friends are dressed in rags, wading through garbage. The Devil comes over. "I don't understand," stammers the politician. "Yesterday, I was here and there was a golf course and we ate lobster and danced and had a great time. Now it's a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable." The Devil looks at him, smiles and says, "Yesterday, we were campaigning. Today, you voted for us!" If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, and dry cleaners depressed? Even more, baseball players will be debased, organ donors will be delivered, and musical composers will eventually decompose. On a more positive note, though, perhaps we can pray politicians will be devoted.Would Anyone Notice?BY JACKIE MILLER, EVANGELIST First Christian ChurchSeveral years ago, a New Jersey man killed his wife, three children and mother-in-law. He left their bodies in their expensive home. It was almost a month before the "neighbors" knew anything was wrong. No one noticed their absence because no one really knew them. James McKay of USC coaching fame said, "The neighbors are perfect. I don't know any of them." The New Testament terms for "The Church" included the words which mean "fellowship," "household," "family," and "in one house." The essence of the Christian-to-Christian relationship was that of being bound together in the ties of love, a community. People whose lives are intertwined and involved with each other. In the book "We, The Lonely People," Ralph Keyes asks, "Would anyone notice if I didn't show up?" The fellowship of the church is responsible for noticing. But there's another side to it. Have you ever let yourself get involved in anything in the fellowship of the church? Are you there often enough or committed to any group or function that your absence would be noticed? Other than sitting in a pew on Sunday morning and a hasty rush for the door, what do you do to establish yourself in the fellowship of the church? It may be the church which is indifferent. Maybe you are. It's your responsibility to become a part of the fellowship, to get to know people and to participate in a group where people get to know you. When I hear someone mention that church people aren't friendly, I can't help but wonder what this person ever did to try and be friendly to others. It's a two-way street. If you insist on being an observer rather than a participant in your church, the chances are pretty good that you'll continue to feel like an outsider. Commitment is basic. There is no way that a community can be forged from people trying to make up their minds about whether or not to "belong" or community-seekers who keep their bags packed and ready. When I say "commitment," I don't mean a signature in blood, or even a long-term contract. What I do mean is a willingness to stay through friction, to work on problems when they occur and to stick with each other. I think that's what has to happen for any of us to nd the meaning and ful llment of fellowship in the church, or anywhere else. Our attitude ought to be, "This is my church. When there are problems, I'll be here to help solve them. When things are going well, I'll be here to enjoy it." That's commitment! RELIGION COLUMNS Rev. Sam S. Thomas Pastor John Hicks

This compares with the national average that has fallen 0.6 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.46/g, according to gasoline price website FloridaStateGasPrices.com. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 64.6 cents per gallon higher than the same day one y ear ago and are 1.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has decreased 1.2 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 65.5 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago. “With some European resolve in regards to the Greece debt situation, oil prices took off late last week,” said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst. “While the national average has remained relatively subdued in the last couple weeks, we may see a slow climb in the national average this week. “The national average for gasoline has barely climbed, even as crude has gained some $20/bbl from the lows we saw nearly six weeks ago. As we approach heating oil season, we’ll also see support for diesel prices, which is sure to frustrate diesel consumers, who are paying as much as eighty cents more per gallon than gasoline consumers,” DeHaan added. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 3, 2011 BY ROBIN KISH Lakeside MedicalAt its monthly meeting on October 11, the Health Care District of Palm Beach County’s Board of Commissioners elected its new Board Chair and of cers, welcomed its newest member, and honored two outgoing of cers. In a unanimous vote, the Board elected Benjamin Frank, Esq., as Chair of the volunteer Health Care District Board, along with Carol A. Roberts as Vice Chair and Alina M. Alonso, MD, the Director of the Palm Beach County Health Department, as Board Secretary. Mr. Frank succeeds Jonathan R. Satter, who concludes his six years of Board service at the end of October. “I consider it a privilege to chair this Commission and take the gavel from Commissioner Satter,” said Mr. Frank, a former executive and attorney with more than forty years experience in business, healthcare and government. “I am very passionate about the Health Care District and hold it in great awe. The work that is done by the employees every day makes them heroes, whether it’s saving lives in our Trauma System, keeping students healthy in our School Health Program, delivering acute care at our rural hospital, Lakeside Medical Center, providing health coverage to uninsured residents or offering skilled nursing care and rehabilitation at the Edward J. Healey Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.” Mr. Frank was appointed to the Health Care District Board in February 2009 by Florida Governor Charlie Crist. After earning his law degree from New York University’s School of Law, Mr. Frank joined New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller’s administration, played a key role in the development of the World Trade Center project and the Harlem State Of ce Project in New York City, and served as Deputy Commissioner for New York State’s Of ce of General Services. His government experience also includes serving as an advisor to President Reagan on international trade negotiations. Mr. Frank was Senior Vice President for Allied Stores Corporation, Executive Vice President/General Counsel for the Hament Corporation, and founder and Chairman of Ben & Jerry’s Canada. Mr. Frank served as Vice President and Board member of the North Shore University Health System, a large hospital system on Long Island, New York. Mr. Frank’s rst order of business included the swearing in of new Board member Brian R. Lohmann. Mr. Lohmann is Supervisor of Accounting at the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida. Appointed by the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners to represent the Glades area, Mr. Lohmann succeeds former Board member Ef e C. Grear, EdD, whose second term expired in September 2011. Mr. Lohmann will chair the Health Care District’s Finance Committee. The Board honored both Mr. Satter and former Vice Chair Patrick J. DiSalvo by presenting each of them with proclamations that recognized their volunteer service. Mr. Satter was appointed to the Health Care District Board of Commissioners in October 2005 by Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who reappointed him in September 2006 to serve a four-year term. Mr. Satter served as Board Chair since May of 2008 and during his tenure also served as Board Vice Chair, Board Secretary, Chair of the District’s Audit Committee and Chair of the Finance Committee. “Commissioner Satter has done so much to support the health needs of the community,” said Ronald J. Wiewora, MD, MPH, Chief Executive Of cer and Chief Medical Of cer of the Health Care District of Palm Beach County. “We thank him for his leadership.” Prior to the construction of Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade, Mr. Satter volunteered to chair the Hospital Construction Advisory Committee and played a key role on the subsequent Construction Oversight Committee from June 2006 to December 2009. Thanks in large part to Mr. Satter’s leadership and guidance, the new hospital opened in October 2009, 120 days ahead of schedule and more than $10 million under budget. In 2005, he helped mobilize support in the business community that was critical in launching the Vita Health program, which today provides health coverage for more than 7,000 Palm Beach County residents. “Serving on the Health Care District Board has been a rewarding experience,” said Mr. Satter. “I learned something new every day. Among my goals was the nancial stability of this health care system and I’m proud to say that the District is better today scally than it was when I began my service in 2005.” Last month, Mr. DiSalvo completed his one four-year term on the Health Care District Board. Mr. DiSalvo was appointed to the Health Care District Board by Florida Governor Charlie Crist in October 2007. In May of 2010, the District Board elected Mr. DiSalvo to serve as Vice Chair of the Board. Mr. DiSalvo distinguished himself on the Board by his meticulous attention to the health care system’s nancial health, performance and efciency, chairing the District’s Finance Committee from June 2008 to September 2011. Mr. DiSalvo’s service with the agency began in April 2006 when he volunteered to serve on the Glades General Hospital Board in Belle Glade. He has been a strong advocate of the District’s mission to ensure the delivery of quality health care services to the residents of the Palm Beach County communities along the southeastern shore of Lake Okeechobee. In June 2006, Mr. DiSalvo was selected to chair the Construction Oversight Committee that oversaw the construction of Lakeside Medical Center. “When I look around at all the special taxing districts and other organizations in Palm Beach County, we have the right mission,” Mr. DiSalvo said as he chaired his last Finance Committee meeting in September. “We make a great impact on people’s lives and that’s why I was here for the past ve-plus years. We need to be constantly vigilant to make sure that the dollars we take in are effectively expended for the needs of the county and it ts within the mission of the District.” Florida Governor Rick Scott has announced his two new appointments to the Health Care District Board. Philip H. Ward III, an attorney from Jupiter and former chairman of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, succeeds Mr. Satter. Nancy C. Banner, an attorney from Palm Beach Gardens, succeeds Mr. DiSalvo. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 14 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee November 3, 2011 BY NAJI TOBIAS e SunFor the rst time since the 2008 season, the Glades Day Gators can call themselves district champs. Though it truly means nothing more than securing a home game in the postseason's rst round, it could pay huge dividends for the Gators this time around. In Glades Day's 41-6 road district win over Summit Christian on Oct. 28, the Gators scored all of their points during the rst half of play. Glades Day (5-3 overall; 5-0 in District 7-2A play) went into the second quarter with a 6-0 lead thanks to a 33-yard interception return from Colton McKillican. Followed by that defensive score, the Gators went on to score four of its ve second quarter touchdowns on the ground, w ith junior running back Kelvin Taylor (12 carries, 103 yards, 3 TD), senior fullback Luke Alava (one carry, 1 yard, 1 TD) and senior star Will Zipperer (eight carries, 36 yards) among those leading the way. Gators senior quarterback John Barr (1-for-1 passing, 32 yards, TD) accounted for the other second quarter score, as he threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Darville. And with that, Glades Day who needed just 182 total yards and 12 rst downs in the game to easily dispatch Summit Christian is now locked in for the Class 2A playoffs. "The only thing a district title gets you is a home game," Glades Day head coach Pete Walker said. "It's a lot better than going out on the road in the rst round, which we've had to do in the past two seasons." Jupiter Christian, a team that beat out Glades Day for the past two district championships due to its head-to-head regular season wins over the Gators, will now know what's it like to play on the road in the postseason's rst round. The Eagles (7-2 overall; 4-1 in District 7-2A play) defeated Village Academy, 40-0 on Oct. 31, to secure District 7-2A's second and nal playoff spot. Should Glades Day and Jupiter Christian both win their rst-round playoff games on Nov. 18 their opponents won't be decided until after the Nov. 4 statewide district games an epic classic is potentially set for Nov. 25, with the Gators hosing the Eagles at Glades Day's Gator Field in the Class 2A regional nals. "There's always a chance we could see them again," Walker said. "I'm sure it will feel a lot better playing them [Jupiter Christian] at home." Notes: Taylor, who has amassed a Palm Beach County-leading 1,738 yards this season and 8,384 y ards over the course of his career, is now just 420 yards away from breaking Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith's all-time Florida high career rushing record in yardage which still stands at a FHSAArecord 8,804 career yards. Taylor will most likely break Smith's all-time record either during Glades Day's Nov. 11 regularseason nale on the road against South Fork or during Glades Day's rst-round playoff game. "It's hard to tell when that will happen," Walker said. "It's an unbelievable record to break, but right now, we're just trying to keep him healthy for the playoffs." Taylor on his quest to break Smith's state record: "I forgot about all that," Taylor said after learning about how close he is to passing Smith for the all-time record. "All I'm thinking about is trying to get our team some victories. As a team, we just have to keep working hard and do whatever it takes to get back to state. We want to win it all again." Glades Central 63, Jensen Beach 7: The Raiders (8-0 overall; 3-0 in District 14-5A play) are now just one win from clinching yet another district title after blasting the Martin County-based team on Oct. 28. Glades Central senior quarterback Tanner Redish (10-for-12 passing, 161 yards, 3 TD) unleashed his arm to torch the Jensen Beach secondary early and often, as his 45-yard touchdown pass to junior triple-threat playmaker Will Likely (four carries, 120 yards, TD; one catch, 45 yards, TD) started the scoring frenzy. Redish followed with a 2-yard touchdown pass to fellow senior Jaime Wilson (two catches, 13 yards) later in the rst quarter. Jatavis Brown, a senior linebacker for the Raiders, added the scoring as he scored a defensive touchdown off a 23-yard interception return. To complete the rstquarter scoring by Glades Central the Raiders went into the second quarter with a 28-0 lead Likely punched in a 15-yard run for a trip to the end zone. Glades Central (No. 1 overall in the latest edition of the Associated Press High School Football poll in Class 5A; No. 6 in the latest Flavarsity.com statewide all-classi cation high school football rankings No. 51 in the latest RivalsHigh100 national high school rankings) went into halftime with a 35-0 lead, thanks to Dominique Gibson's 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Redish's third and nal touchdown pass which came in the third frame was thrown to junior running back Arron Baker (eight carries, 44 yards, 2 TD; three catches, 62 yards, TD), who scored again in the third off a 9-yard run. Glades Central backup quarterback Greg Davis who lled in for Redish in the fourth quarter threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Zacarius Shepherd, while Baker nished off the game's scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run. The Raiders, who will nish off its District 145A schedule with Boynton Beach at tomorrow night's homecoming game, are heavily favored to win this upcoming district contest. Pahokee 36, Pope John Paul II 0: The Blue Devils (2-7 overall; 2-4 in District 7-3A play) nished off its home and district schedule with an astounding and relieving blowout win over Pope John Paul II on Oct. 28 also known as Senior Night at Anquan Boldin Stadium. Pahokee will now get to breathe easy for a little while, as their bye week couldn't have come at a better time this season. That gives the Blue Devils two weeks to prepare for their nal game of the season a Nov. 11 road match with Glades Central in the annual Muck Bowl. Truth be told, it will provide Pahokee with a whole lot of motivation to make its attempt to avenge last season's 58-0 Muck Bowl home loss to Glades Central. Glades Day Wins District 7-2A Title with Road Triumph over Summit Christian PHOTO / IBRAHIM ALAVA PHOTO / IBRAHIM ALAVA Last week's sports report listed Tanner Reddish as scoring the a fourth quarter touchdown. In actuality, Glades Central freshman Giovanni Lugo scored in the fourth quarter of the Raiders 39-0 win over Fort Pierce Westwood off a 1-yard quarterback sneak play. CORRECTION

What is a Bluebird Blitz? A blitz is a concentrated effort on speci c dates to locate as many Eastern Bluebirds in your locale as possible. How do I participate? Go outside on Friday, Nov. 18, and or Saturday, Nov. 19, and look for bluebirds Record as much as you are able about the bluebirds you see. Location, behavior, sex, age, etc. We also want to know where you looked but did not encounter any bluebirds. Download, complete, and submit the Blitz Report form from the FBS web site, oridabluebirdsociety.com. For more information contact Faith at oridabluebirdsociety@gmail.com. This is a great opportunity for adults and youth to become citizen scientists for the day and to help document Florida's Eastern Bluebird population. The Eastern Bluebird is a common bird of least concern that is found in meadows or openings surrounding trees. It has bene tted from the use of human-made nest boxes throughout Florida. These cavity nesting birds numbers were declining for a number of reasons including; competition for natural nest sites from other bird species such as the Tufted Titmouse, Caroline Wren, House Sparrow, Eastern Starling, and diminishing winter food supply and adverse weather. They feed mainly on insects, but will feed on wild berries in the winter. The adult male is a small, beautifully colored thrush with a bright blue back, head and tail. It has a chestnut colored throat and breast with a white belly. The female is duller or grayer with bluish wings and tail and a subdued orange-brown breast. Young birds have heavily spotted feathers. The Eastern Bluebird has a distinctive fairly low-pitched warbling song that sounds like "chur-lee, chur-lee," which might include chattering notes with whistle when singing. They will build a nest of pine needles and grasses inside cavities where they will lay four or ve eggs which hatch in 13 to 15 days. During a successful nesting season two to three broods of young will be raised. The young stay with their parents during the nesting season, usually lasting from March to July. This makes up a rather large family group by summer's end. By popular demand, photographer Dan Tudor will be returning to LaBelle with entertaining presentations on "Burrowing Owls" and "Coyotes". Dan has been photographing burrowing owls at Cape Coral nest sites for the past 10 years. Join Hendry-Glades Audubon for these free programs on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension, Dallas Townsend Building 1085 Pratt Blvd in LaBelle. The delegation hopes that the Florida Department of Transportation, at the request of the governor, will locate directional signage on all state roads leading to Lake Okeechobee. Ms. Tripp’s desire is that even locals will remember that they have an incredible resource at Lake Okeechobee. Too often even locals seem to forget that, said Ms. Tripp. “Some children have no idea that’s the second largest freshwater lake in America. I think this is going to be a great tool in raising awareness,” said Ms. Tripp. By directing people to the area, locals hope to capitalize on the possibility of greater ecotourism dollars. Located in the Everglades, the local cities nd themselves in a region without replication anywhere else in the world. As some pockets of population in Western Palm Beach County continue grappling with unemployment as high as 40 percent, all dollars are welcomed. If it takes a sign to reinforce that concept, then that’s what the locals will do. It’s no magic trick, but it just might work. SignageContinued From Page 1
