Just about everyone who knows the former Glades Central Raiders quarterback/linebacker Jamarious Mario' Rowley can say that about him and much more, perhaps. For a supremely talented athlete of his type, Rowley's had to overcome the lack of an of cial college scholarship offer, two consecutive heartbreaking losses in the past two Class 2A state championship games against the Cocoa Tigers and the passing away of perhaps the three closest people in his life. None of that, however, stopped Mario from achieving his childhood dream an opportunity to play football at the college level. Spurned by Hampton but picked up by N.C. CentralIt was Tuesday, July 12 in Durham, N.C. the day that Rowley had enrolled as a freshman student at North Carolina Central University. Content on going to college for academics, Mario's whirlwind life took an unexpected turn in his favor. A family member of Rowley's had turned over his highlight tape to the N.C. Central Eagles coaching staff, which subsequently led to him earning a spot on the Division 1-AA (FCS) college football team. Ironically, Rowley gave credit to his late aunt Gail Beard she passed away earlier this year in her sleep for what had transpired at that particular juncture. "My aunt called me on [National] Signing Day (Feb. 2)," Rowley said. "She was telling me, Don't worry about nothing, God got something in store for you. It's probably not where you want to be, but something might come along for you at the last minute.'" The experience proved to be a surreal one for Rowley, to say the least. "When the offer came in, it was just shocking because she [Gail Beard] said it was probably going to be at the last minute and it happened that way." Carmen Deale, Rowley's older cousin, was happy to see him make that nal college decision for himself. "Going to the college will help him see a different side of life other than just Belle Glade," Deale said. "He's overcome a lot of things in his life, so with the type of mentality that he has, I think he'll do very well there." BY BOB WATTENDORF FWCWhen humans and sh were evolving together, catching and consuming sh was a matter of survival. Later, catches offered something to barter or sell. Now, most people sh recreationally. Regardless of the purpose behind shing, big catches stroke the angler's ego. Today, recreational shing has an annual $7.5 billion economic impact in Florida. Habitat conservation and regulations help sustain these sheries, but with greater demand it is increasingly important to protect and recycle the largest trophy sh by also promoting voluntary catch-andrelease. Florida's "Big Catch" angler recognition program helps stroke the ego of successful anglers by allowing them to show off their prowess. The Big Catch program provides a framable, full-color certi cate and window sticker for anglers who catch any of 33 species of listed freshwater shes that exceed a minimum length or weight. If people catch ve qualifying sh of the same species, they are recognized as a Specialist. If they report ve qualifying sh of different species, they become a Master Angler, and if they take and report qualifying sh representing 10 different species, they are an Elite Angler. Young people can enter sh that are approximately 25 percent smaller than adult qualifying sizes. Big Catch also encourages anglers to sh for a variety of species and to travel to locate them, while promoting appropriate catch and release. A new set of "TrophyCatch" marks and awards are in the works for trophy bass anglers. The TrophyCatch angler recognition program will be the hallmark of the long-term Florida Black Bass Management Plan, which the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved in June. The FWC intends to ensure that Florida is the undisputed bass shing capital of the world. TrophyCatch will be a full- edged initiative to document largemouth bass caught, and preferably released, throughout Florida that are heavier than 8 pounds. Incremental rewards and recognition will be provided to anglers reporting bass in the 8-10, 10-12, 12-13 and greater than 13-pound categories. The anticipated rollout for TrophyCatch is October 2012. "This program, driven by private dollars, can substantially enhance Florida bass shing by addressing ecological issues and encouraging recycling of trophy bass, but it will also have a great social and economic impact," said Tom Champeau, director of the FWC's Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management. Biologists are developing speci c handling guidelines to ensure anglers do the best possible job of effectively releasing these sh while providing the FWC with valuable research and marketing information. FWC representatives will certify bass over 13 pounds caught from October through April (beginning in 2012) for entry into the Florida Trophy Bass Hall of Fame. Sponsors, corporate partners and the media will provide incentives to encourage reporting and releasing all such catches. Fisheries biologists will use TrophyCatch reports to identify Florida's best bass sheries to determine which management practices (e.g., habitat and aquatic plant management, regulations, stocking) are most effective in creating trophy sheries. Visit Florida and the FWC will work with the media to use this information to establish Florida as a prime trophy bass shing destination. Incorporating social media and online mapping resources will make this information widely available to the public and create a buzz as anglers report new trophies and post photos. Such recognition will increase both resident and nonresident angler participation and enjoyment, tackle and license sales, tourism and help create the next generation that cares about our natural resources and outdoor recreational heritage. In Florida, more recreational shing days are spent on fresh water (24.4 million days by 1.4 million anglers) than on salt water. Largemouth bass are the most sought-after species not only in Florida but also in the nation. Bass anglers alone generate $1.25 billion for our economy, supporting thousands of jobs. Consequently, promoting and safeguarding Florida's trophy bass sheries is good for everyone. Tim O'Neil, an FWC marketing expert and liaison to the Wildlife Foundation of Florida a public-support organization af liated with the FWC said that the FWC and the Foundation want to work with the sport shing industry. "TrophyCatch is in its infancy but will grow quickly. We want to work with the best and brightest in the corporate world to make this a win-win-win for the environment, anglers and industry." Learn more at MyFWC.com/Fishing (select "Freshwater Fishing" then "Big Catch"). Send suggestions for ways to enhance these partner-driven programs to Bob.Wattendorf@MyFWC.com. With a record of trophy catches, we hope to reaf rm our status as the Fishing Capital of the World and become the undisputed Bass Fishing Capital of the World. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 Obituaries should be submitted by sending e-mail to obits@newszap.com. Ihad seen ads for Appearance Implants and sought out Dr. Harrouff. When I walked into the lobby of the office the first thing I saw was a photo of the late Republican strategist Lee Atwater, who I later learned was a childhood friend of Dr. Harrouff. As a South Carolina Democrat I didnt have a lot of love for Lee, he had gotten the best of me in my first campaign, I sure as hell wasnt too keen on letting any buddy of Lee work on me. After that first encounter, I felt very confortable with Dr. Harrouff. The entire experience was purely first rate. From the people who greeted me in the lobby and to the dental staff, the Appearance Implant & Laser Dentistry team makes you feel right at home. When Dr. Harrouff got down to performing the procedure it was fast, relatively painless and the result was just perfect. The finished implant works better than Id expected. He provided me with the most affordable treatment and I have been more than impressed and satisfied by the results. I have recommended Dr. Harrouff and his professional and friendly staff to many of my friends. You are invited to join a team or survey the birds from your home for 15 minutes or more on the count day. The NAMC in Florida is sponsored by the Florida Ornithological Society, and is supported by local Audubon Societies, local bird clubs, and other interested organizations. The mission of the North American Migration Count (NAMC) is to: Obtain a “snapshot” of the progress and “shape” of fall migration. Obtain information on the abundance and distribution of each species. Initiate more participation among birders w ithin a state and between states. Create challenges and goals among birders w hile collecting useful information. Aid in organization and centralization of date. Have fun. During the September 2010 NAMC, 110 bird species and 15,700 individual birds were reported by 52 participants in Hendry and Glades Counties. For information about the NAMC contact Margaret England. One of the species observed in inland Florida was Killdeer. Killdeer are a medium sized slender and lanky plover with a long pointed tail and long wings. Adults have a brown back and wings, a white belly and a white breast with two black bands. Their rump is an orange-buff. The face and cap are brown with a white forehead. They have an orange-red eye ring. They have many calls which range from sharp “dee” to a nervous babbling thrill. They frequently use a “broken wing act” to distract predators from their nest which is a shallow scrape, usually in bare sand or gravel camouaged with stones and blades of grass. When the predator is far from the precious nest the killdeer suddenly “heals” and ies away. Both parents share responsibility for the eggs which usually hatch at 24-28 days. The chicks, which have almost the identical markings as the adults, are able to see and forage soon after hatching. They usually edge at 25 days. Although Killdeer are considered shorebirds, they often live far from water. They can be seen and heard in elds, lawns, sandbars and mudats. If you would like to join Hendry-Glades Audubon volunteers on the August 20th STA5 bird trip send an e-mail to Margaret England, at sta5birding@embarqmail.com with your name and contact information including an emergency cell number for the trip day, the date you want to go, and the number in your party. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee A ugust 4, 2011 Deale, the daughter of the late Beard, sees Rowley as a Tim Tebow-like quarterback one that leads a team on and off the eld, while letting the play speak for itself. "I really feel he'll be used more as a quarterback than a linebacker there," Deale said. "He's going to let the school shine at that position." Prior to that moment, the prospect of playing college football this season seemed somewhat doubtful for Rowley particularly when it came to an offer at Hampton University that wasn't. Recruited by the Division 1-AA (FCS) school since his junior season at Glades Central, Rowley had taken an of cial visit to Hampton, Va. on the w eekend before this past year's National Signing Day festivities. All signs pointed to Rowley joining the likes of former Raiders stars Antonio B.O.' McCloude, A ntwon Pooh Bear' Chisolm, Vincent Harper and Leron L.J.' Thomas at the university. However, everything changed on Feb. 1, the day before National Signing Day took place at his high school alma mater. Mario received his status at Hampton via a text message capping a roller-coaster experience w ith the school he thought he would be playing college football for. Consequently, Rowley was a no-show at Glades Central's Signing Day table with his former teammates Kelvin Benjamin (Florida State University), Davonte Allen (Marshall University) and Robert Way (Marshall University). "I was down, but I knew at the same time that I couldn't let it hold me back," Rowley said, adding that playing quarterback and linebacker for Glades Central would land him a college football opportunity somewhere. "I basically just stayed humble and stayed on top of my studies," Rowley said. "I made it my focus to do everything I was supposed to do to get to college." Rowley, a Class of 2011 graduate at Glades Central, nished high school with an ACT score of 22 and a 2.9 grade point average marks that were good enough to get him into N.C. Central University.Mario’s humble and tragic beginningsIt's not often that an individual loses both his/ her parents at an early age. But Rowley, just a 7-year-old youngster, had to live that experience rst-hand. In 1999, Rowley had lost his mother, Mary, to a heart attack. Just six months later, Rowley's father, James, succumbed to the same fate. A fourth-grade student at the time, Rowley said he didn't like going to class much and didn't perform well in the classroom. In that same period, Rowley had a near-death experience of his own, when his tonsils had to be taken out in a procedure. "They were swelled up and it almost stopped me from breathing," Rowley said. The former Glades Central star athlete spoke further on how his whole personal experiences felt for him back then. "When that happened, I felt like giving up on my life," Rowley said. "After my momma and daddy died, I thought I didn't have anything else to live for. What was the purpose of being on earth without them?" From that point on, Rowley was and still is comforted by a large family and community support system, which include the likes of his older sister, Canisa Rowley, cousins Deale and William Likely Jr., former coach/mentor Ronald Cook, current Glades Central head coach Roosevelt Blackmon and Hester, to name just a few. "I had a lot of people that kept me on that positive and straight line," Rowley said. "They provided me with everything I needed so there would be no excuse for me not to succeed. Ever since then, I've just been striving for excellence and trying to reach my highest potential. That's why I go all out on every play and never take a play off when I'm on the eld." Mario’s summer workout planGive it everything all or nothing. That characteristic trait could very well de ne who Rowley is as a football player. Working out this summer in Belle Glade with fellow former Glades Central/current Detroit Lions safety Randy Phillips, Rowley opened up on the importance of getting himself into shape for the next level. As the two were working on a set of NFL-style workout drills over the course of a few weeks they both began their football days playing for the Pioneer Park Eagles youth football program the now-5'9", 220 lb. quarterback/linebacker gushed about how Phillips helped him improve in his overall conditioning. "Randy showed the kid [me] love," Rowley said. "When I tried to get water breaks, he just told me to keep going. It's just basically a mindset thing. If you put your mind to it that you don't need no water and you could keep going, then you could do it." "I know that a lot of people are going to be bigger, faster and stronger in the NCAA," Rowley continued. "So I just made sure I worked on getting my body and my form right for college." While Rowley was in the area for the summer, he worked out in the gym and ran drills on a eld at the rate of approximately twice per day and six days per week. Those close to Rowley took notice of his sleeker and more muscular look. "When my tonsils came out as a kid, my doctor had told me that a lot of weight was going to start coming up on me," Rowley said. "I guess it was that time for the weight to come up. But I always played with heart, no matter what m y height and weight was. Again, I always felt like if I just gave my all, then everything would take care of itself."Preparation period for the next levelIt has been all about progression for Rowle y throughout his football career. Though Rowle y has constantly had to work his way up in his conditioning efforts, he really had to earn his way to star at quarterback for Glades Central perhaps the most highly scrutinized and high-risk/highreward position in the game. After some time on the storied program's junior varsity team, Rowley was moved up to the varsity squad during his freshman year. That was in 2007, when the likes of University of Miami wideout Travis Benjamin and Bethune-Cookman wideout Eddie Poole were ying high for Glades Central. It was that period when Rowley started to grasp the game speed his fellow upperclassmen possessed. RowleyContinued From Page 1 See Rowley — Page 12 PHOTO / NAJI TOBIASA blow-up poster of former Glades Central quarterback/linebacker Jamarious Rowley was hung up at his home in Belle Glade during a going-away party for him on Sunday, July 24.

“Let me just say this: It was like college football out there,” Rowley said. “I was doing linebacker drills with [former Glades Central linebackers] Samuel Brown, Russell Lewis and Robert Ferguson and they were all like grown men on the eld. I learned a whole lot from them; they were way bigger, faster and stronger back then … I wasn’t quite ready for varsity at that time.” Rowley’s sophomore year in 2008 was somew hat similar in that he saw time on both of Glades Central’s junior varsity and varsity teams. What caught the eyes of the Raiders varsity coaching staff – it was Hester’s rst of three years at the helm – was a breathtaking performance for Rowley at quarterback in a junior varsity game against the Lake Worth Trojans. Shortly after throwing for 390 yards and a jaw-dropping nine touchdown passes against the Lake Worth junior varsity team, Rowley moved up to the varsity team. Only this time, it was for good. “That gave people a reason to say I would be the spark at quarterback if they couldn’t nd anybody else,” Rowley said. After playing behind Thomas in 2008 and 2009 – Glades Central reached the Class 2A state title game the latter season – it was time for Rowley to take over as the team’s undisputed starting quarterback for the 2010 campaign. It proved to be a mixed blessing for Rowley. While he would be held in very high regard for his unsel shness and desire to do whatever it took to win a state title – Glades Central fell one point short of that goal (14-13 loss to Cocoa) in last year’s Class 2A championship game – the move to quarterback hurt his college recruiting process in a big way. Rowley, who was getting looks from the likes of Division I (FBS) big-time schools Wisconsin, Iowa Sate and Rutgers at the linebacker position as a junior, saw his opportunities slip away once it was discovered he would play his senior season primarily at quarterback. “It hurt me in the end, but I can’t let that be a downfall for me,” Rowley said. “I just got to move forward. Whatever doesn’t kill me will make me stronger. That’s the motto that I always use for myself.” Rowley, who was named the team’s Most Valuable Player, ended his senior season as one of Palm Beach County’s best overall quarterbacks, racking up 2,821 yards passing for 34 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions. A nalist for News Channel 12’s (West Palm Beach) Palm Beach County Football Player of the Year, Rowley later went on to represent the American team at quarterback in this past January’s Palm Beach County-Treasure Coast High School Football All-Star Game. Lauded by his American teammates, National opponents and coaches from both All-Star teams for his unsel shness and overall play – Rowley threw for two touchdowns in that All-Star game – he was selected as the American team’s MVP. It’s something that did not go unnoticed by former and current Glades Central head coaches Hester and Blackmon, respectively. In fact, Blackmon went on to say that Rowley was one of the most unsel sh players to ever don a Glades Central uniform in its illustrious history. In the end for Rowley, he credits all his success at the quarterback to his style of play and to the entire Glades Central program. “Playing quarterback, it’s about repetition,” Rowley said. “You got to know your wide receivers; you got to know how fast they run, how they run their routes, how they catch the ball, where you have to put the ball at. Once you know that, then the game becomes easy to you. I couldn’t see the line much when we played taller teams, but I knew where to place the ball to my receivers,” Rowley continued. “That’s all there was to it.”On to the next oneNorth Carolina Central’s rst game on its season schedule is Thursday, Sept. 1 at Rutgers University. Though Rutgers was in heavy talk with Rowley during his college recruitment process, he will never forget about how the Scarlet Knights turned him down. “My height and size was the only thing that ever held me back,” Rowley said. “Rutgers was talking to me a lot at one point, but once they found out that I play quarterback, that was it. I didn’t let that get to me though.” Ironically, it will be a huge motivational factor for Rowley to consider. Though Rutgers is likely to be a heavy favorite to win that game – after all, it is a Division 1-Division 1-AA matchup – it would be a huge accomplishment for Rowley and the Eagles if they pull off a huge upset in Piscataway, N.J. on that night. To make things even more interesting – as far as North Carolina Central’s schedule is concerned – Rowley will likely see action against two other schools that turned him down: a road game against Hampton (Oct. 22) and a home game the following Saturday (Oct. 29) vs. Bethune-Cookman. Down the road will be key back-to-back MEAC college football games in late October, with Rowley going up against former Glades Central teammates McCloude, Chisolm, Thomas and Vincent Harper (Hampton – Oct. 22) and against Poole (Bethune-Cookman – Oct. 29). “I talk to all those guys about the rivalries that could start,” Rowley said. “We’re real competitive like that, so we were talking about who would come out on top. There’s going to be a lot o f people from the Muck out there to see all of us compete. It should be fun.” Hopefully, all that college excitement could eventually land Rowley a spot in the NFL four years down the line. His sister, Canisa, strongl y believes it will happen. “With all he’s gone through, I don’t see anything else but that for him,” Canisa Rowley said. “If he just keeps working real hard and stays out of trouble, then I know he’ll go to the next level. I have a lot of faith in my brother.” Regardless of how things turn out for the 19-year-old – he will be majoring in sports medicine at N.C. Central – there’s one thing that stands out above all else for him. “If you got heart, can’t nobody take that awa y from you,” Rowley said. “Heart will get you a long way in life. If it wasn’t for God, I wouldn’t have had that heart and I wouldn’t be here right now.” Mary Rowley, James Rowley and Gail Beard may very well be smiling down on Mario for that and much more. 2 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 27, 2010 12 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee August 4, 2011 RowleyContinued From Page 11 The “Milestone” program at Crossroads Academy is designed to graduate responsible citizens who are prepared to function with honor and integrity, in an ever changing global society. Laughter brings blessings to our lives, but God can also use our laughter to bring blessings to others, pointing people to His blessings and power. Psalm 126:2 speaks of the laughter and songs of joy that lled the air as God’s people returned to their homeland after years in exile. And as the nations around them witnessed the joy of God’s people, they proclaimed, “The LORD has done great things for them.” God has done great things for us as well, and that’s reason enough for us to claim the joy of our Lord and the gift of laughter in our lives! Laughter comes in all styles and shapes: from the true belly laugh, to mere chuckles, to giggles and cackles, to nervous laughter, to the polite social laugh, to an occasional snort. And, I might add, even a silent smile or quiet groan at a good pun (or even a bad one!). “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” (Proverbs 17:22) Laughter is the greatest cure of all. Moments of deep laughter are divine in the sense that they cleanse our mood and set our mind on a positive track. In that spirit, let me bless you with you some “groaners”: Thieves who steal corn from a garden could be charged with stalking. I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. If you take a laptop computer for a run, you could jog your memory. In a democracy, it’s your vote that counts; in feudalism, it’s your Count that votes. With her marriage, she got a new name and a dress. Show me a piano falling down a mineshaft and I’ll show you Aat miner. A grenade fell onto a kitchen oor in France, resulting in Linoleum Blown Apart. A hard-boiled egg is hard to beat. May your mood be cleansed and your mind be set on a positive track, and may God truly bless your day with laughter! “This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!” (Psalm 118:24)All I Needed to Know Was in Genesis: FamilyBY REV. SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchThe Old Testament is full of guides to living. Those ages had some practical advice for all of the ages afterward. Their wisdom is impressive. Case in point; working with family members. An account in Genesis (Chapter 29, verses 15ff) tells about Jacob and Laban. They are “kinsmen”. Laban will hire Jacob but doesn’t expect him to work for nothing! That’s unusual in many situations. Observation #1 -We sometimes expect “family” to do what others might be paid to do. Such relationships can get abusive; good will and kindness can be something where relatives take advantage. Laban asks Jacob “What will your wages be?” and Jacob, who has fallen in love with one of Laban’s daughters, Rachel, asks for her hand in return for seven years of labor. However, at the end of seven years, Laban switches daughters on Jacob, giving him the older daughter, Leah, instead of his beloved Rachel. In spite of the treachery (families can be treacherous in dealing with one another) Jacob agrees to a second-year term; the deal was “Seven years for the one I love” and Jacob worked another seven years, then got the woman that he loved. Observation #2keep your word and be honest in your dealings even if those around you try to take advantage of you. One rule of thumb that I found helpful in families is expecting from my (or others) family (families) the same considerations that I might expect from a stranger on the street. Someone who is supposed to love me, or whom I am supposed to love should not use “family” as an excuse to be abusive or exploitative. I don’t take abuse from a stranger; being family doesn’t somehow give a person the right to be violent, deceitful, treacherous, to go back on their word, or to ignore common decency. I am required to act likewise even when family is involved. Children come home from school only to nd a dif cult job market; relatives have lost their jobs and have no rent money, someone needs a temporary loan to tide them over due to an unexpected expense; there are so many times we want to help, should help and are blessed for it. There are also times when help goes beyond limits and subtly encourages inactivity, resting in a “comfortable rut”, takes away motivations to be responsible, and a loving relationship becomes one of the user and the used. The balance is a delicate one, the calls are subjective, feelings are involved. Loving a neighbor as oneself means that there must some love of oneself too! Wise as serpents; innocent as doves – discern wisely, don’t be exploited – if you are being used, you’re not really helping!Improving Your AttitudeBY JACKIE MILLER, EVANGELIST First Christian ChurchHere’s eight ways to improve your attitude at church. 1. Tell yourself that since your are not perfect, you would not t into a perfect congregation if such existed. 2. Instead of picking out the worldly or hypocritical members of the church to point to, pick out the sincere, dedicated, and spiritual members and thank God for them. You will nd that which you are looking for. 3. If you are old, treat the youth with the consideration you desired as a young person. If you are a young person treat the old with the respect you will want when you grow old. 4. When you are tempted to criticize the elders, minister, deacons or other Christians, pray earnestly for them rst. This may not change them, but it will do wonders for your own attitude. 5. When you see wor k neglected, instead of being critical, offer to help. 6. Never blame others for your failures. Every individual can be faithful to God in spite of the bad examples and discouraging attitudes of others i f he is determined. 7. Remind yourself every da y that the only way you can improve the world and the church is to begin with self. Make constant self-improvement your goal. 8. Consciously loo k for the good qualities in every brother and sister in Christ. When you think of a particular person, make a quick mental note of the good qualities you have found in him. We are Christians because we recognized our need for the Lord Jesus Christ and have accepted the free gift of forgiveness of sins and eternal life offered because of His sacri ce, not because it is the patriotic or American thing to do. We must seek the Kingdom of God rst and then serve our country to the best of our ability. Once this is accomplished in the life of an individual, then will come true the saying, “He who serves the Lord best serves His nation best.” As we remember our great American heritage, let us not forget the far greater heritage which we have in Christ and the great future which He offers us.
