Sunday Homicides Claim 26- and 16-year-old

Deadly events over the
weekend claim two Glades
victims

BY JOSE JESUS ZARAGOZA
The Sun
Detectives are busy working on two cases on
Sunday which left two men dead. In two incidents
on Sunday, in two separate cities, two Glades area
men were violently shot down in plain sight. In
the wake of the crimes, investigators are asking
the public to provide any information to help

catch the gunmen.
Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies re-
sponded to the first incident at approximately
6:20 p.m., called out to Lakeside Medical Center
in reference to the death of a man, Reginal Mila,
26, of Belle Glade.
Hospital workers informed deputies that the
man had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. A
subsequent investigation revealed that Mila had
been gunned down while driving his F 150 in the
600 block of S.W Martin Luther King Blvd. in Belle
Glade.
According to information released by Teri
Barbera, spokesperson for the sheriff's office,
unknown assailants had approached Mila's ve

hide, shooting him while the vehicle was still in
motion. Mila's vehicle struck a building, and then
another vehicle at the intersection of Southwest
Sixth Street and Southwest Martin Luther King
Blvd.
People who witnessed the crime took pos
session of Mila and transported him to Lakeside
Medical Center, where he later died as a result of
his injuries.
In the second case, which deputies responded
to just a little more than an hour later, at 7:45 p.m.
deputies responded to the shots fired call to find
James Dents Jr., 16, dead from gunshot wounds.
Dents was found lying in a yard of a resi
dence.

According to investigators, Dents had been
walking in the area of Northwest llth Avenue
when two subjects driving a Toyota Camry drove
by, peppering the young man with bullets.
Dents tried to escape, but collapsed in front of
the home in the 1,000 block of N.W First Street
in South Bay.
Officials are hoping that residents with infor
nation about the shooting will step forward to
help apprehend the gunmen involved in the in
cidents. The sheriff's office has not said whether
the shootings were gang-related, or connected in
any way.
If you have information, you are encouraged
to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS.

National Edges American in PBC-Treasure Coast All-Star Game

Glades Central's Jamarious
Rowley and West Boca's
Robert Lockhart earn MVP
honors

BYNAJI TOBIAS
Special to INI
The 18th Annual Palm Beach County-Treasure
Coast All-Star Game at Boca Raton High School
featured highlights from players on both the
American and National teams.
But the game's outcome came down to one
key play -a two-point conversion try with just
40 seconds left in the Jan. 22 high school all-star
showdown.
Down 20-19, the American team had two
choices: either kick the extra-point in hopes of
sending the game into overtime or go for the
win.
Following a beautifully executed 40-yard
touchdown pass from Glades Central senior
quarterback Jamarious Rowley to Dwyer run
ning back Shawn McClain -it was a fourth-and-4
play with less than a minute left in the game and
American down 20-13 -American head coach
Kevin Wald (John Carroll) initially chose to go for
the extra point.

As both teams lined up for the extra point,
however, an offside penalty was called on the Na
tional team, giving Wald and the American team
yet another chance to either tie or win the game.
Wald and his coaching staff decided to go for
the two-point conversion and the win, as they

called a running play for Jensen Beach senior run
ning back Tevin Wilson (seven carries, 21 yards).
It looked as if Wilson would punch it down
the heart of National's defense into the end zone,
but the entire National army knew it was coming
and stopped him one yard short of the goal line.

The game was essentially over after that, but it
was really official after American failed to convert
on an onside kick following that failed two-point
conversion attempt.
"It was wild, man," Jupiter Christian senior
running back Trey Pendergrass (eight carries, 30
yards) said of the game's outcome. "Our offense
was determined to compete for the win. We got
an offside penalty from the defense and figured
we would get the two-point conversion. But we
had 12 men on the field and we just couldn't
quite get it in the end zone. We weren't happy to
lose, but we had a fun week with each other."
After the game, Wald was willing to talk about
the decision to try the two-point conversion.
"It's the all-star game, so we thought we had
a chance to get it in with a yard and a half to go,"
Wald said. "We just came up a little bit short.
Sometimes you win by a few inches and lose by
a few. If we could do it again, I would try it in a
heartbeat."
In what was a relatively close game through
out, National took an 18-13 lead with 1:52 left
in the fourth on a 9-yard touchdown strike from
Boca Raton quarterback Cameron Lewis to West
Boca Raton wideout Robert Lockhart (four catch
es, game-high 67 yards and two touchdowns),

Lake Okeechobee Weekly Fishing Report

BY MARK KING
What a great week it has been here on Lake
Okeechobee with warm temperatures and lots of
bass to catch almost anywhere on the lake. My
clients enjoyed catching over fifty bass a day on
two different days this week and plenty of bass on
the other days this week.
Even when the cold front pushed through our
area of South Florida over the weekend we were
still able to catch a fair number of bass including
a couple nice bass over six pounds.
We caught bass on wild shiners, top water,
and soft plastic worms in quite a few different
areas this week, including bass that we caught
off the beds. The full brought a lot of bass in to
spawning areas but this was not a really big push
like it should be next full moon.
As the water temperature moved into the up
per 60s and lower 70s, the bass seemed to be
everywhere and they were ready to eat almost
anything that you threw at them.
I had two great days catching bass on Gam-
bler Flapp'n Shads from daybreak until sunset,
everything was just right and it was just one of
those days when everything was right.

I also caught a good number of bass on
Gambler Ace's rigged with a 1/16 ounce screw
in weight fished in the scattered eel grass on the
shoal.
Other areas that were good this week include
the East and West Walls, Ritta Island, the Monkey
Box, North Shore, and the outside of Cochran's
Pass. As you can see there were bass to be caught
in a lot of different areas this past week.
The bass were out on the outside grass line
and also back in the shallow water so far that
it almost seemed like they would have to swim
sideways to get into some of the place I caught
fish this week.
With this water level down from last year the
bass seem to be really spooky around their beds
and won't stay on them when you run the trolling
motor near them, a push pole will get you a lot
closer. There were not a lot of big fish caught this
week so this is why that I think that the next full
moon will really push a lot of bigger bass in to
spawn. Not to say that there wasn't some big bass
caught this week just not a lot of them.
Some of the other lures that worked well this
week included lipless crank baits like the Spro

Aruku .'.i ,i il .-reen shiner color, Gambler Big EZ
swim bait in copperfield color, and shakey head
jigs with Gambler Sweebo worms when the wa
ter got cold after the cold front.
The crappie bite has also been pretty good for
some with some bigger crappies being brought in
to the cleaning table.
Some areas to try is Uncle Joe's cut, the rim
canal, dynamite holes, and around Bird Island.
Try both jigs and minnows for the best results.
The FLW Open will be out of Clewiston on the
3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th of February so that means
that there will be a lot of boats out during this time
and I just ask everyone to show lots of courtesy to
these anglers who are out on our lake only a few
days a year trying to make a living and helping to
support our town and it's businesses.
Until next week good luck, tight lines and I
hope to see each of you out on the water.

FLW, Goodwill Gear Up for the Lake 0 Open

Goodwill Industries and
FLW Outdoors Partner to
Drive Awareness, Donations

The excitement of the 2011 Walmart
FLW Bass Fishing Tour is coming to Hendry
County in February.
This year's Lake Okeechobee Open will
take place in Clewiston from February 3 to
6, and Goodwill Industries of Southwest
Florida (http://www.goodwillswfl.org) is
hooked in for all the fun and excitement.
The Walmart FLW Tour is operated by
FLW Outdoors, the world's leading tourna-
ment-fishing organization.
The 2011 Tour season consists of 11 bass
fishing events, including four Open tourna-
ments, six Majors and the Forrest Wood Cup,
and the Walleye Tour Championship.
Among those competing will be profes-
sional angler Chad Grigsby of Maple Grove,
Minn., who will be sporting the Goodwill
jersey and Smiling G logo and representing
Goodwill on the Tour.
Grigsby has participated on the Tour for
nine years, with career earnings nearing
$500,000 and nine top-10 finishes, including
one at the Forrest Wood Cup, which is con-
sidered one of the most competitive events
in pro bass fishing.
Goodwill, which operates more than
2,500 retail stores and donation centers
throughout the United States and Canada,
will utilize the resources of FLW Outdoors to
drive traffic and awareness to its locations.
Goodwill will receive exposure and have
a presence across multiple platforms of FLW
Outdoors, including all bass and walleye
events, FLW Outdoors' multiple web sites,
FLW Outdoors Magazine and "FLW Out-
doors" television show on VERSUS.
Locally, Goodwill (http://www.good-
willswfl.org) will participate at the FLW
Outdoors Expo on February 5 to 6, with fun
family activities and giveaways.
The Expo will be located adjacent to
the Clewiston Walmart (1005 W Sugarland
Hwy.). Goodwill will also use the opportuni-

ty to collect donations of gently-used items,
and to promote its mission of providing pro-
grams and services for people with disabili-
ties and other barriers to independence.
"The relationship formed between FLW
Outdoors and Goodwill has demonstrated
how a unique partnership can benefit both
organizations and our communities," said
Trisha Blake, president of FLW Outdoors
Marketing Division.
"Goodwill provides skills training and
support services to hundreds of people ev-
ery day through its multiple programs, and
we are honored to be a part of that and con-
tinue that relationship."
The partnership between Goodwill and

FLW Outdoors came about through the
work of Irwin L. Jacobs, who is the chair-
man and chief executive officer of FLW Out-
doors, as well as the creator of FLW Fantasy
Fishing.
"Goodwill's mission of helping people
find jobs resonates with Jacobs," said Caro-
lyn Johnson, Goodwill's Vice President of
Communications.
"Goodwill will collect donations from
FLW Outdoors fans and partners, and the
revenue generated from the sale of these
items will fund career training, not just for
people in Clewiston, but across Southwest
Florida."

RELIGION COLUMNS

Things Outside of Our
Experience
BY JACKIE MILLER, EVANGELIST
First Christian Church
What are the many things that happens to an
individual when he surrenders to Christ, through
Faith in the Gospel, Repentance of sins, Confes
sion of Faith of Christ and Baptism (immersion)
into Christ?
Several of the things that happen to him when
he accepts Christ are a matter of how God sees
things and are completely outside of his experi
ence. Only by faith can he know that they have
taken place.
The first of these is forgiveness. This occurs as
a result of God imputing the individual's sins to
Jesus. He, therefore, becomes sinless in the way
that God, the righteous judge, looks upon him.
Second is justification. The righteousness of
Jesus Christ is imputed to his account. In this way
he becomes not just forgiven but positively righ
teous. In classical reformed i. 1i.", these two
things are seen as one.
The third thing is adoption. Because of the
foregoing, God treats the individual as His child
who will not likely have a strong conviction of
adoption unless he understands the first two
points.
Our access to God is not by God's mercy or by
our own worthiness but by God's having forgiven
our sin and having imputed Christ's righteousness
to us. Any holiness, any change, or any commu
nion with God that the Holy Spirit works in us is
because we are forgiven, justified and treated (ad
opted) as a child of God.
It seems to me that our modern American
evangelicalism increasingly gets the cart before
the horse and is preoccupied almost exclusively
with our experience of God's work in our lives.

Can We Do Something To End
Violence?
BY REV SAM S. THOMAS, PH. D.+
Saint Martin's Church
Some of discourse following from the recent
shooting of a congresswoman is about the tone
of dialogue in the nation. It's believed to be re
lated to our level of violence and lack of civility to

each other.
I recently
received an -
e mail where
someonetold
me of miss-
ing some
thing; how
she "hated"
it. I replied,
suggesting
that maybe
she was re
ally "disap
pointed," but
"hated it?"
Hatred is
a much strong Rev. Sam S. Thomas, Ph.
ger emotion D. +
than disap
pointment;
and it was nothing lost that couldn't be made up.
Sometimes, the poor choice of words suggests
some emotion that is not called for or may not
really be accurate.
If the thought is the parent of the action; think
ing clearly, choosing the right words to express
our thoughts is doubly important in society today
where violence is rampant and short tempers
abound.
Thinking and then speaking clearly makes a
difference. During His final discourse with His
disciples, Jesus tells them "...a time is coming
when I will no longer use (figurative) language
but will tell you plainly about my Father (John
17:25)." The disciples respond "Now you are
speaking clearly ... Now we can see ... you do
not even need to have anyone ask questions (v.
29)" and Jesus replies "You believe at last! (v.31)."
In other words; the admonition is "Speak clearly,
speak plainly, knowwhatyou m , o . .....ie 'We are
told "Simply, let your 'Yes' be 'Yes' and your 'No'
'No.' (John 5:37)" I might add, "Speak kindly"
as well.
In my residence in another country, I got
a parking ticket one day when I was delayed. I
picked it off of the windshield and read "We're
very sorry, but it seems you've overstayed your
time at this meter. We would appreciate your for
warding the amount of money ... to address this
situation and clear the records. Thank you." I
was pleasantly taken aback: I had overstayed the

allotted time; but the tone was one of politeness
and not as adversarial as I first expected. The re
suit was the same; I paid the required amount,
but the realization that the matter could be han
died kindly made a lot of difference.
I have listened to my share of language on the
street and often wonder if persons using all of the
expletives know what they mean.
Frankly, I doubt it. I remember a person calling
me a string of words one day; but I interrupted to
assure him that my parents were married in the
midst of his tirade. He stopped for a second and
looked. "Aha" I thought "he doesn't know what
the words he is using really mean."
When he slowed down I asked him if he was
using another word as a noun or .ii. I; I An
ger communicated in words that were not even
known; no wonder people get violent and we
lose our ability to talk civilly with one another.
Speak simply, plainly, kindly.
There's Biblical reasons to do so; and the re
wards for it can be great. It's better for the blood
pressure, too!

Trash-Filled Ships Find Few
Friends
BY PASTOR JOHN HICKS
First United Methodist Church
The Khain Sea was for a while the world's
most unwanted ship. No one wanted her. She
was the Hobo of the High Seas. She traveled for
27 months on a journey that took it to four con
tinents where country after country declined to
accept the ship.
The problem was not the boat. Though rusty
and covered with barnacles, the 466-foot freighter
was seaworthy. The problem was not ownership.
The owners kept the license up and the taxes
paid. The problem was not the crew. They may
have felt unwanted, but they weren't inefficient.
The problem was what she was carrying.
It was trash -garbage, 13,000 tons of it. It was
the trash of Philadelphia's summer of 1986. Mu
nicipal workers went on strike. Trash piled higher
and higher. Georgia refused it. New Jersey said no
way. No one wanted Philadelphia's trash.
That's when the Khain Sea entered into the
picture. The owners thought that they would turn
a quick buck by transporting the rubbish. The
trash was burned and the ashes were dumped

into the belly
of the ship. It
set off for the
Bahamas, but
they didn't
want it. Nei
their did Haiti,
Sri Lanka, Af
rica, or a host
of other na-
tions. No one
would take it.
Trash t
filled ships i
find few
friends.
Trash filled
hearts don't Pastor John Hicks
fare much
better.
Life has a
way of unloading garbage on our decks. Unex
pected delays, traffic, lines, rude people, whining
kids, tough times. The result trash overflowing.
Load after load of anger. Guilt. Bitterness. Anxiety.
Impatience. Frustration. It all piles up.
Trash affects us. It contaminates our relation
ships. If you have trash on board, people are going
to smell it. The troubles for the Khain Sea began
with the first shovel full. The crew should have
turned it away at the gate. Life would have been
easier for everyone on board if they had never al
lowed the trash to pile up. Life will be better for
us if we do the same.
Our challenge is to protect the boat and refuse
entrance to anything that would garbage up our
lives.

Panther-Death Numbers Little Changed in 2010

BY GABRIELLA FERRARO
FWC
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC) documented 23 panther
deaths in 2010. Of those mortalities, 16 panthers
died after being struck by vehicles. Six of the
panther deaths are attributed to "intraspecific ag
gression," or panthers killing other panthers. One
panther died of unknown causes.
This is very similar to 2009, when the FWC
documented 25 deaths, with 17 of those killed by
vehicles. The five year average is approximately
23 panthers per year, with an average of almost
14 killed each year by vehicles.
"Motorists should be aware that panthers
are not always struck in posted panther speed
zones," said Darrell Land, FWC biologist and
panther team leader. "We caution motorists to
be on the lookout for the large cats in wild areas
near panther zones, especially around sundown
and sunrise."
Panther speed zones are well-marked, with
speed limits reduced at night to 45 mph. Motorists
should be aware that violators often receive fines
exceeding $200 for their first offense, and any vio
lation of more than 29 mph over the posted limit
will result in a mandatory court appearance.

"The FWC continues to work closely with the
Florida Department of Transportation to develop
measures that will increase motorist and panther
safety along Florida's roads," Land said.
Land also said the panther population has
been slowly increasing in Florida, which results in
the documentation of more dead panthers. Land
also noted the female panthers that were radio
tagged during 2010 produced 29 kittens. The total
number of kittens born for the entire population
is unknown.
Florida panthers have been listed federally
as an endangered species since 1967 because of
the small, isolated population and habitat loss.
Recently the FWC completed a "Statement on
Estimating Panther Population Size," which notes
there are likely between 100 and 160 adult pan
others in South Florida.
"This number comes from combining sev
eral science-based methods to provide a lower
and upper bound of the population," said Kipp
Frohlich, the FWC's Imperiled Species Section
leader. "This should be thought of as a theoretical
range that provides some insight into the possible
magnitude of the total population size. We are
continually seeking improved methods for deter
mining the most accurate estimates."

Panther research and manage
ment funding comes directly from the
additional fees collected when indi
viduals purchase the "Protect the Flor
ida panther" specialty license plate.
Money also goes to law enforcement
to increase patrols in the areas where
panthers reside in South Florida.
Panther specialty license plates
are available at local tax collectors'
offices across the state. For more in
formation, go to FloridaPantherNet.
org and click on "Panther Pulse." To
report dead or injured panthers, call
the FWC's Wildlife Alert Hotline at
888-404-FWCC (3922).

Traffic Fatalities Continue To

Decline In Florida

Crime Stoppers Wants You

To Be On The Lookout For...

Preliminary figures show
crash fatalities fall for fifth
year straight

BY ANN HOWARD
Dept. Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles
In 2010, Florida experienced 2,430 traffic crash
fatalities, a three-decade low number of traffic
crash fatalities and an annual decrease of more
than five percent, according to preliminary data
from the Florida Department of Highway Safety
and Motor Vehicles. By comparison, 2,563 people
died in traffic crashes in 2009. The number of
crash fatalities in 2010 is the lowest the state has
seen since 1978 even though the Sunshine State's
population has doubled since that time.
"It is encouraging to see the number of traf
fic fatalities continue to drop, and the Department
will continue our efforts to educate motorists and
aggressively enforce the traffic laws to create the
safest possible driving environment," said DHSMV
Executive Director Julie L. Jones. "Unfortunately,
we know all too well the devastating impact that
even a single fatality resulting from a careless, in
attentive or impaired driver can have on a family
and community."
The final count for 2010 will be made avail
able 1ii ,I i iI.. ,, i . .. the Department publish

es its annual Traffic Crash Statistics Report 2010.
Reports from previous years are available online
at www.flhsmv.gov/html/safety.html.
"The Florida Highway Patrol is committed to
patrolling Florida's highways around the clock,
every day of the year, to safeguard motorists and
stop dangerous drivers," said FHP Director, Colo
nel John Czernis. "Our law enforcement partners
and public safety stakeholders also deserve credit
for their efforts to keep our streets safe. Motorists
can do their part when they buckle up every ride,
Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of
people between the ages of 5 -34, according to
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC reports, "seat belt use is the single most
effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in
crashes" and "using seat belts reduces serious
injuries and deaths in crashes by about 50 per
cent."
In an effort to reduce crashes, state troopers
not only enforce the law, but also they educate the
public on safe driving habits. They talk to groups
about traffic safety, conduct demonstrations us
ing the rollover simulator, show parents how to
properly install car seats and more. The Depart
ment conducts numerous education campaigns,
such as Drive with CARE, a program for teen driv
ers and their parents. Drive with CARE prepares
teen drivers for a lifetime of safe driving.

Palm Beach County 24-Hour

Homeless Point-in-Time Count

The Point in Time Count seeks to identify the
number of homeless individuals and families in
Palm Beach County. During a 24 hour period,
Palm Beach County Human and Veteran Services
employees, volunteers and social service agency
staff go into the community to gather informa
tion on homeless populations. The count not
only measures the needs of the homeless, but
also provides direction for future development
of services. It is an important tool for resource
development and planning. Results of the count
provide the community with vital information to
use in obtaining funding to support programs for
the homeless in the county.
The Point in-Time Count is conducted across
the nation every two years. Biennial homeless
counts are required for communities that receive
funding from the U.S. Department of Housing
and Urban Development (HUD). The results are
used by HUD to determine how much funding
will be available for homeless assistance in each
state and local area. Federal, state and some pri
vate foundations rely on the results of this count
to determine grant awards. It also helps assess

progress under Palm Beach County's Ten Year
Plan to End Homelessness and provides impor
tant information for updating the plan. It will be
held Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 12 p.m. and Thurs
day, Jan. 27 by Palm Beach County Homeless and
Housing Alliance. Individuals are counted on the
streets and at more than 75 sites including home
less camps, programs for the homeless, public
parks, food pantries, meal sites, shelters and pub
lic gathering spots. To locate a survey site call the
Homeless Coalition at 561 478-5351.
Those who are staying with family or friends
because they have no home, are asked to go to
the following site to be counted (a Salvation Army
canteen will be at these sites on Jan. 26 from 1 to
4 p.m. serving meals):

FFA Member Honored

at the Fair

Kasey Dulany, daughter of DeWitt and Sher
rie Dulany, of Belle Glade participated in the 2011
South Florida Fair Youth Livestock Market Hog
Show at the South Florida Fairgrounds January
20-22, 2011. Kasey is a senior and is part of the
Glades Day School Future Farmers of America
program.
This was Kasey's fourth year participating
in the South Florida Fair Youth Livestock Market
Hog Show. Kasey has learned a lot about re
sponsibility, perseverance and how hard it is to
care for a hog. Her hog was a Yorkshire named
was Moose. Moose weighed in at 260 pounds.
Kasey won 1st place at the Fair for her hog in
Class 5 (hogs weighing 257 to 261 pounds) and
was the seventh exhibitor to auction her hog off
out of 75. She also returned to the ring for the
Grand Championship drive.
Kasey won the senior showmanship ribbon
for Class 5. This honor was for her skills show
ing her hog in the show ring. Kasey has won this
award in her class/division all four years that she
has shown hogs at the fair. Her family is very
proud of her!
Kasey's hog was auctioned off at the Fair
thanks to the support of a number of local busi
nesses, specifically the Howard Hill Foundation.
Kasey is extremely thankful for their support and
realizes that living in the Glades is like having one
huge, supportive family. Kasey had such a good
time participating in this project that she would
certainly encourage others to do the same. Her

parents agree! They have seen the lessons of
responsibility that she has learned since joining
.FEA. four years ago. "If a child goes into this
thinking it is going to be easy, they are wrong",
says Kasey. "It is a lot of hard work!"
In addition to daily care of the animal which
is the largest responsibility with the project, the
students must keep an accurate accounting of
expenses, income, weight records, health re

mitted to the fair or be disqualified from entering

"This project is about so much more than
raising a hog," says Sherrie Dulany, Kasey's
mom. "It has taught Kasey lessons that will help
her get ahead in life by teaching her responsibil

lessons with the record book and how to over

The memories of participating with her
friends will be cherished for a lifetime! I am
SO proud of Kasey and what she has accom

all of the businesses and individuals that help to
make this possible for the children in the F.F.A.
and 4-H programs!

Manager considers past life,
compares to present, and
why the Glades is a unique
challenge

BY JOSE JESUS ZARAGOZA
The Sun

Corey Alston is South Bay's city manager, a
position he has held for approximately 18 months
now. In that time, Mr. Alston has focused on im
proving the financial standing of the city. A cere
bral thinker who exudes a professional approach
to city management, he has already begun to turn
around the city's position through shrewd moves
targeting some of the larger line items in the bud
get.
Q: Where are you from and what are your
professional qualifications?
A: Born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale. That's
also where I live currently. Just moved back to
South Florida a few years ago. I did my undergrad
in finance Florida A&M University. I went on to
get an MBA in Finance. I've done the executive
management program at Northwestern Universi
ty in Chicago Kellogg School of Business. I served
as an analyst with Goldman Sachs in New York. I
served as a corporate turnaround consultant with
a firm called McKensie and Company, I worked in
their Chicago office. Did a lot of advisory consul
tant work, mostly with Fortune 500 companies,
but I also did some work in the public sector
group.

Q: What brought you to the Glades?
A: Literally several years ago, I was looking
around Palm Beach County and a few folks di
rected me to the Glades as a place to look for
opportunities to do some of the work that I had
done before, either on the financial advisory side,
or I' .' !, ii . il, ii i i, ..I, ' I ni *i. because I had
done a little bit of affordable housing as well. And
so that was my first introduction to the region.

Q: Despite living in South Florida for much of
your life, you never visited the Glades. What was
that first experience like?
A: It was different. It was different. As I was
driving through, I was thinking more of other
rural towns; I was thinking more of my mom's
hometown in Georgia, versus thinking about
Palm Beach County. Another thought running
through my mind was, there is such a big differ
ence between the east side of Palm Beach County
and the west side of Palm Beach County -just
two completely different worlds, with different
dynamics. One side known for having among
the highest per income capital folks in the coun
try, and the other side known for having among
the lowest per capital income folks anywhere in
the state of Florida. I knew that no substantial
turnaround happens overnight. In fact, to do any
kind of major and substantial improvement to
this community probably needs to be thought of
more in five to ten year horizons, for every major
stage of growth and improvement.

Q: Four to five years? Considering your previ
ous experience, was South Bay a place you were
willing to come to and invest four to five years
of your life?
A: Most people are surprised that I'm here.
They say, "wait a second, relatively young guy,
in his 30s, decent education, good resume, why
this?" And I'm gonna tell you the truth, I asked
myself that three or four times before I said yes.
I ask myself that, I still ask myself that occasion
ally. But I guess some of us get such fulfillment
in trying to help others and trying to do what's
good for the masses, that sometimes you're able
to overlook that yes, I could be getting paid more
elsewhere. Yes, I could have less stress. Yes, I
could go somewhere where I'm not an outsider.
Yes I could. This is by no means as sexy as be
ing a Wall Street banker for Goldman Sachs. This
is by no means as sexy as being a consultant for
what's deemed to be the world's premier busi
ness consulting and advisory firm and spending
at least four days a week traveling to client head
quarters in a bunch of places. But what makes

this sexy, to use perhaps an inappropriate word,
is that there is so much need and so much op
portunity, i , . ... can almost create a better situ
ation, a better tomorrow, with some reasonable
level of support. Another context, working hard
potentially only moves the needle a millimeter; in
this region, working hard can substantially move
the needle. That's what makes this as sexy to
me as walking down Wall Street with a bunch of
multi-millionaires.

Q: How does your expertise in finances trans
late into an expertise in people, with your mana
gerial role here in South Bay?
A: I've always been interested in leadership
and I've been blessed to have different opportu
cities to demonstrate leadership. My friends that
would know me from Broward County, they jok
ingly and affectionately call me Mr. President. Be
cause Walker Elementary Magnet School where
I went, I was student government president, and
Parkwood Middle School, I was student govern
ment president, and then Boyd Anderson High
School, where I went for the International Bac
calaureate program, I was class president ninth
grade through 12th grade. And I was a student
member on the school board in Broward County
my senior year so I represented all the students
in the district. I went to college and I was class
president for my first three years. Leadership and
responsibility is not something that I'm fearful of.

Q: You . ... I.7, had a shooting that resulted
in the death of a 16 year old.
A: I think that every community anywhere in
the country would be disappointed to hear about
this kind of shooting. And clearly we are. Is it
ever possible to completely get rid of shootings
and gang activity? I don't know if it is, but I know
that our sheriff's office liaisons, and I know that
representatives of this city will do all that we can
within our means to curtail and hopefully stop it.
It was an unfortunate situation, a tragic loss. I just
think that one of the reasons kids get involved in
lives of crime is because they are familiar with
and i,. .' - r._. . accustomed to lives of despair.
They've seen their parents and their grandparents
work hard to financially generate relatively noth
ing.
And so it's almost kind of an unfortunate, per
petual situation that links a few things: your ability
and your pursuit of a quality education I believe
education is power -there is also a connected
piece there on your family, and the strength of
your family and the family values, which unfortu
nately have eroded over time nationwide. There
is a piece around financial opportunities and job
opportunities and business opportunities. I've
spoken with one or two young folks since I've
been here.
One day, when I was down close to a large
group of young folks that were congregating at
one of our city parks, Cox Park, which is not terri
bly far away from where this situation took place,
as I was introduced as the new city manager, one
of the guys who was later identified to me as one
of the more aggressive and strong young folks
who had been involved in different levels of crimi
nal activity, what he said to me and probably one
of the most touching things since I've been here,
was, "Mr. Manager, sir, one of the best things you
could do for us is help some of us find jobs. If
some of us had jobs, we wouldn't be on the street
corner." That's really saying a few things. I think
a lot of folks who that are in situations, they're
not there because they desire to be; in fact, they
would like to be in a different place.
The question is: what place is available to
them that allows them to do something different
and go in another direction?

Students Win

First Place in

State

Competition

Fourth and fifth grade students in the KEC
TV News club at Kathryn E. Cunningham/
Canal Point Elementary just won 1st place in
a statewide video contest held by the Florida
Department of Education (DOE). The stu
dents created their video "Super Reader" for
the 2011 Public Service Announcement con
test Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!
The "Super Reader" video is about a
super hero whose face is always hidden
behind the book that she is reading. Super
Reader gets her super powers through the
books that she reads. She ends up winning
a race against others super heroes at the
Super Hero Track Championship. She won
the race because she gained super speed by
reading a book about running.
The purpose of the video was to teach
students that reading books can give you su
per powers and help you become a cham-
pion. The students that created the video are
Jalyn Mitchell, Anthony Bowie, Ja'Quandria
Woodard, Len'Tajia Lewis, Edniyan Thom
as, and Jimmie Gray. Last year Jalyn Mitchell
and Anthony Bowie were the proteges of
former KEC TV reporter Damon Weaver.
On Thursday, January 27th the students
will be at the Florida State Capital in Tallahas
see to accept an award for creating the win
ning video. Florida's First Lady, Ann Scott,
will present the awards to the students. The
students have earned their school a $1000
gift card to Barnes and Nobles and books
from Scholastic.
While in Tallahassee the students will
have the opportunity to go to the Museum
of Florida History and visit Florida's Historic
Capitol Building and Florida's current State
Capitol Building.
About the contest
The main ..i.i. I . of the 2011 Public
Service Announcement Contest Celebrate
Literacy Week, Florida! was to have students
from across the State create public service
announcements that celebrate and promote
the importance of literacy in the state of
Florida. The Just Read, Florida! Office in the
Department of Education is planning a state
wide "Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!"
event, scheduled for the week of January
24-28, 2011.
The goals of "Celebrate Literacy Week,
Florida!" are to promote literacy through
out the state by raising awareness of the
programs and projects offered by the DOE
and to promote 1i . i . ii....... i of reading for
children and adults of all ages. During "Cel

Game
Continued From Page 1

who was named the National MVP
The game-clincher turned out to be a suc
cessful two-point conversion from National after
Lewis somersaulted his way into the end zone to
make it 20-13 -a lead that National held on to at
the end.
"They were hungry," McClain said of the
National team. "They just came out 14-t and ex
ecuted like they were supposed to. That's why we
didn't win this game."
On American's last drive of the game, Paho
kee's Feraris Golden hauled in yard catch from
Rowley on a first-down play from American's 42
down to National's 44 yard line with 1:33 left.
F, .ii. inl i h ".,il . , , conversionweretwo
short completions of 1 and 3 yards from Rowley
to McClain. After a third-and-4 pass attempt fell
incomplete, it was all or nothing from there.
Rowley's potential game-winning pass to Mc
Clain (three catches, 44 yards), a loop out play,
was made possible because the Glades Central
quarterback rolled to the right and found McClain
wide open in the end zone for the score.
"Me and Shawn were trying to connect the
whole game," Rowley said. "Once he sees me
scramble out, I told him to run down the field so
I could give him the ball."
Despite the loss, Wald was happy with how it
all turned out.

"I thought we couldn't play much better than
we did defensively," Wald said. "Offensively, we
really started to get into a flow in the fourth quar
ter. It was a pleasure to work with all the players
and coaches throughout the week. With a one
point game, I think everybody got their money's
worth."
Notes: The Palm Beach County-Treasure
Coast All-Star Game, formerly known as the Out
back Steakhouse Bowl, was officially renamed
the Lytal, Reiter, Smith, Ivey and Fronrath All-Star
Game.
Glades Central wide receiver Jaquevian Oli
ver (four catches, 56 yards) hauled in a 15-yard
touchdown catch from Rowley in the third quar
ter, giving American a 13-9 lead over National at
the point.
Rowley (10-for-15 passing, 140 yards, two
touchdowns, no interceptions) also rushed for
a 17-yard touchdown in the first quarter, which
put American up 6-0 to begin the game's scoring.
The Glades Central quarterback and American
MVP (15 carries, 29 yards and a rushing score)
accounted for 169 of American's 231 total yards
of offense for the game.
The Pahokee Blue Devils were represented
very well, as the American team featured Joe Ea
son (cornerback) and Rontavious Atkins (safety)
as starters. Meanwhile, Wardell Coleman (one
carry, 8 yards) and Golden (one catch, 14 yards)
played offense for American, giving Pahokee a
team-high four players in the game.
Glades Day kicker Joseph Langmeyer, who
missed a 48-yard field goal attempt at the end of
the first half but was 1 for-2 on extra point tries,
represented the Gators, as well as lineman Tyler

LeCroy.
The Clewiston Tigers sent two of its seniors to
the game, with defensive lineman Robert Week
ley (eight tackles) and linebacker Fred Washing
ton making their presence known to the Ameri
can team.
A total of 10 high school senior seniors from
the Muck area (Clewiston, Glades Central, Glades
Day and Pahokee) were represented in the Palm
