Local

girl wins

at Rodeo

By Brenda Bunting
Special to The Sun
Most little girls are thrilled with
Barbie dolls and Easy Bake Ovens.
But McKenna Hickson of Belle
Glade isn't most little girls. This
tough eight-year-old's passion is
horses. Fast horses.
It's been that way since she was
just a toddler.
"She started asking for a horse
when she was just two," says
mom, Kay Hickson.
Her dad, Bill, fulfilled McKenna's
dream when she was just five and
purchased her a little pony named
Cracker. But Cracker bucked her
off; then broke her arm when he
inadvertently stepped on it. That
would be the end of the story here
for most riders, but it was no de-
terrent for McKenna. As a matter of
fact, she has since gone on to also
break a leg, and a wrist. That's an-
other story.
Today, McKenna owns six quar-
ter horses and her biggest thrill is
saddling up and competing in bar-
rel racing events throughout the
state. She has been competing for
three years and has won several
competitions, including the Palm
Beach County Mounted Posse
Pony Division barrel racing cham-
pionship in 2009 and the Acreage
Horsemen Association's Pony Sad-
dle Series championship in 2009
on her horse, Crackers.
Determination and hard work
have paid off for McKenna and she
now holds title to the state barrel
racing championship in her divi-
sion, ages 6-14. She won that ac-

colade, along with a belt buckle
and a saddle, at the Florida Junior
Rodeo Association finals May 14th
at Brighton Indian Reservation.
Surprisingly, she won on a horse
most trainers would have put out
to pasture long before. Mack, a 20-

year-old quarter horse she's been
riding for over a year and a half,
was her teammate during all the
points she accumulated through-
out the season to win the title.

West County Senior
Center serves elderly
population

By Ashley Causey
Special to The Sun
From the outside, the West
County Senior Center can be
mistaken for just a regular build-
ing that many pass everyday but
what goes on inside is far from
ordinary.
Public perfections -- the sight of
seniors napping underneath flo-
rescent lights -- fade away inside.
Seniors here aren't the subject of
dreary daydreams, they're active,
doing physical exercise, moving
around with enthusiasm. Laugh-
ing, smiling.
Located right here in Belle
Glade for 30 years, the Senior
Center has made its mission to
become a community focal point
for the seniors of the Glades.

at any age
It has become a place where
individuals 60 and older can come
together for services and activities
which enhance their dignity, sup-
port their independence and en-
courage their involvement.
Joseph Horvath, manager of
the West County Senior Center,
understands how vital it is for se-
niors to be mobile and meet with
friends.
"I accepted this job mainly be-
cause of my grandmother. I used
to call her every Saturday night
without fail, and she would al-
ways beg me to call her more."
Something as simple as a
phone call means much more to
the elderly, he realized.
"I always felt that calling once a
week was enough. They look for-

State of Florida soars in national

'Bicycle-Friendly' state rankings

State jumps 20 spots to
rank 12th in the nation
Florida jumped 20 places to rank 12th in
the nation among the most bicycle-friendly
states, according to the League of American
Bicyclists.
"Making Florida safer and more acces-
sible for bicyclists is a priority for the Flor-
ida Department of Transportation," said
Stephanie Kopelousos, Florida Department
of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary. "We're
encouraged by the progress we've made
and are committed to making the Sunshine
State a better place to ride your bike."
The Bicycle Friendly States program ranks
states based on a 95-item questionnaire that
evaluates a state's commitment to bicycling

and covers six key areas: legislation, policies
and programs, infrastructure, education and
encouragement, evaluation and planning,
and enforcement.
Florida ranked third in the nation in poli-
cies and programs and in the top 10 for in-
frastructure and evaluation. FDOT worked
carefully with other state agencies and bicy-
cling groups to compile the state's respons-
es. In fact, the department has formed the
Bicycle and Pedestrian Partnership Council
which meets for the first time in late June.
Working with multiple partners, the coun-
cil will make recommendations on design,
planning, safety and other programs involv-
ing bicycle and pedestrian issues throughout
the state.
FDOT's seven districts have pedestrian-
bicycle coordinators who consider the pe-

destrian and bicycle aspects of FDOT facili-
ties, projects and programs in their areas.

cycle Friendly State Rankings, please go to

clefriendlyamerica/bicyclefriendlystate/. For
more information about FDOT's bicycling
programs, please go to www.dot.state.fl.us

Gov. Crist announces free saltwater fishing weekends

Gov. Charlie Crist has announced two
free fishing weekends to help draw visitors
to the beautiful Sunshine State. Both resi-
dents and nonresidents in Florida can fish
for saltwater species around the state with-
out a license during the upcoming Memo-
rial Day weekend, May 29 to May 31, and the
weekend of June 5 and 6, which is the first
weekend after Florida's popular red snapper
season opens in the Gulf on June 1. All other
fishing rules apply.

"Florida is the fishing capital of the
world," Crist declared, "and our beaches are
clean, the fish are biting, and we invite our
friends to enjoy some Florida hospitality."
Chairman Rodney Barreto of the Florida
Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
(FWC) applauded the governor's decision.
"Gov. Crist's actions to offer free fishing
this weekend and next will do wonders for
our business communities that have been
suffering cancellations since the oil spill

started," Barreto said. "We aren't experi-
encing any oil impacts here, and the fact re-
mains that Florida is open for business."
The FWC will continue to monitor all
of the potential impacts of the oil spill on
Florida's fish and wildlife and continue to be
involved with many aspects of the oil spill
response, Barreto added. In addition, the
FWC has consulted with key representatives
from several fishing organizations in Florida
who are very concerned about inaccurate

public perceptions regarding the condition
of Florida's fisheries and the state's marine
environment. There has been strong agree-
ment from these stakeholders that the fish-
ing business in Florida is "as usual" and that
fishing remains a safe and viable recreation-
al and commercial activity.
Go to MyFWC.com/Fishing to learn about
fishing regulations in Florida.

Raider News!
On May 25, 2010 the grades (3-5)
young males at Rosenwald Elementary
School were surprised with a visit by Mr.
Jessie Hester. Mr. Hester a former GCCHS
Raider, NFL Professional Football Player and
Present Head Coach of the GCCHS Raider
Football Team spoke with the male youth
on a variety of topics. The topics included
self-confidence, self-esteem, motivation, his
career, family, and making positive choices
in life. Then Mr. Hester took questions from
his young audience. The questions includ-
ed: What was the best event that happened
during your career? How many touchdowns
did you make in your career? Did you ever
play in an Orange Bowl? How many games
did you win in your entire professional ca-
reer? The youth seemed highly motivated at
the end of the visit. Kudos to Mr. Jymel An-
drews, School Guidance Counselor and Mrs.
Ann Govan School Police Officer for helping
make this important event a success.
RATS! RATS! RATS! The play based on
the story of the Pied Piper of Hamlin was
performed by our very own Rosenwald

The group did 3 performances and was a
huge success. Kudos to Mrs. Watson, Music
Teacher and Mrs. Loggins Grade 4 teacher
for making the event a huge success.

was held Thursday May 27, 2010 at Rosen-
wald Elementary School! The grade 5 stu-

ter and beginning another in middle school.

Local artist completes gospel CD

Belle Glade, FL Known for his bari-
tone voice and his commitment to his fam-
ily, Belle Glade native Gerald Smith recently
completed his first compact disc titled In
the Promise. Having worked on the cd for
12 months, Mr. Smith did not rush this work
because he is sincere about his music and
sincere about his ministry.
A 1996 graduate of Glades Central Com-
munity High School, Mr. Smith attended Bet-
hune Cookman University in Daytona Beach
and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Ra-
ton where he majored in Music Education.
While at Bethune Cookman University, he
was one of the lead vocalists in the univer-
sity's world-renown Chorale.
Mr. Smith's passion for music was evi-
dent from childhood and he became known
for his music abilities throughout the Glades
area and beyond because of his passion for
several music instruments. He is proficient
in playing the trumpet, trombone, baritone,
tuba, percussions, organ and the piano.
While in high school, he was a member
of the school's marching band and cho-
rus. And although talented instrumentally,
Gerald is a vocalist by profession. In 2002,
he was lead vocalist on his family's album,
"Time Is Winding Up."
"My music ministry is who I am," said
Mr. Smith. "I enjoy music and I enjoy music
that ministers to people in hopes of encour-
aging them to want to experience all that life
has to offer."

Currently planning a Gospel Showcase in
the Glades, Mr. Smith's cds will be available
for purchase next month. For additional in-
formation on Mr. Smith and his music min-
istry, please visit www.geraldsmith.com or
contact 561-755-0770.

Gerald Smith and family.

Mr. Smith's freshman cd is produced by
Zarak Lawson of Apropos Productions.
Married to the former L'loren Dowdell,
Mr. Smith is the father of two children. He is
the youngest son of Geraldine Smith-Russell
of South Bay.

ward to it," he said. "I wish everyone would
take a moment out of their day and call their
grandparents. Now I have 50 grandmas and
20 grandpas," he said with a smile.
The West County Senior Center also has
a nutrient rich meal program everyday at
lunch time.
Companies such as Publix and Whole
Foods donate their food to the Senior Center
on Monday and Thursdays.
The Center as well offers food stamps
and energy assistance.
The programs offered at the Center are
not based on any income level.
Mr. Horvath explains, "We based most of
our programs on the smile level. Generally
the more each senior smiles, the more food

and love they receive. We don't know how
much anyone makes and we don't care."
He continues, "Our department is about
that when you come here you have a good
time and meet new friends."
Arts and crafts, exercise, crochet, em-
broidery, bridge and prize bingo are just a
few activities that the Senior Center offers.
Another important facet of the Senior
Center is their stance on early detection.
Blood pressure clinics, blood sugar
screenings, bone density tests and health
education are some of the many outlets the
Senior Center utilize to educate the Glades.
Besides health promotion, meals and ac-
tivities, the Senior Center has a bus that will
pick up and drop off seniors Monday through
Friday, from 8 am to 2 pm at no charge.
Mr. Horvath adds," I wish more seniors
would come, especially during these swel-
tering summer months at home. Come out;
make new friends because a friend is some-
one you just haven't met yet."

Saying goodbye is not always forever

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. ..
Before I start, I want to thank God for bless- R....".
.i.. . .. . A., ..2 . .
ing me with this opportunity to speak in front ,.
of you this evening. I also want to thank my
family, teachers and friends for helping me
along this bumpy road called high school.
Without the guidance and kindness from
them, I would not be the person that is
standing in front of you.
The true reason we are here is to extend
blessings and congratulations to the class .
of 2010. Our journey does not end as soon '
as this ceremony is over, but rather this is.
where our journey begins.
For some of us, that journey is heading
off to college while others may enter into
the workforce but whatever path you may
choose remember to think of yourself as on
the threshold of unparalleled success. Reach
for it. Grab it. Own it.
Truly, I can stand here and speak to you
and say that the world will be an easy con-
quest and the challenges will be sparse,
but the truth is the world is frightening, and
there will not always be simple solutions for
the problems we will face. We don't know if
we are going to fail or succeed once we take
our first leap. We don't know if our dreams
will sprout after our first planting. I wish I
could promise each and every one of you
success in every endeavor but we simply do
not know. What I can tell you is to not let
the fear of failure prevent you from taking
that first leap or planting your future with
your dreams because without failure we can
never grow to our full potential.
Our forefathers even recognized the
hardship of finding success and happiness Submitted photo
by stating that life, liberty, and the PURSUIT Ashley Causey, delivering the valedictorian speech at Glades Day's graduation
of happiness are inalienable rights. Hap- ceremony last Friday.
piness and success are rights that must be-
PURSUED. They are not like life and liberty,
which are given to you at birth but they are
rather apart of a journey that must be trav-
eled on the path of hard work and persever-
ance.
Dr. Norman Peale once said, "Begin
where you are. Begin now." This is where
our journey begins. So what if you weren't .
the smartest student in class or the most d
popular. That does not matter. What matters .
tonight is what you do after you leave here.
How do you want to contribute to the world?
Henry Thoreau once said, "Most men lead-L
lives of quiet desperation and go the grave
with the song still in them." The question I
ask is, will that be you? Will you allow des-
peration and fear of the future keep your life
song from playing? Today is the day when
you decide what you will make of your fu-
ture. Will you seize the day? Will you suck
the marrow out of life? Begin now.
Again, I want to extend blessings and
congratulations to my fellow classmates. Go
out and conquer the world with God, hard
work, perseverance and love on your side.
Begin now. Seize today -- do it even afraid Submitted photo
-- because the world is waiting." It was a bittersweet moment for the graduates, their parents, and administra-
Ashley Renee Causey tors.

Rodeo
Continued From Page 1
Now in the sunset of his life, Mack still
has the heart and stamina of a three-year-
old, according to McKenna.
"When you unload Mack at the arena, he
gets so excited. He's ready for business," she
says. "He's so anxious to go that he some-
times rears up in the alleyway," she says.
The alleyway is the narrow space horse
and rider enters just before they cross a laser
light beam that starts their time. As soon as
the horse's muzzle breaks that beam, time
begins. At each race, McKenna's dad holds
tight to Mack while she mounts. He also
walks Mack before the race and tries to keep
him calm.
"Bill's the one who asks McKenna, 'Are
you ready?' When she says, 'I'm ready,' they
become a team and they do their race," says
Mrs. Hickson. "After that," she says, "Mack is
calm again."
McKenna likes to reward Mack with some
of his favorite foods after a race.
"Mack likes Mountain Dew and apples."
she said.
The aged horse has served McKenna well
and will now be retired. When rodeo sea-
son begins again in August, McKenna says
she'll be riding Tucas, a five-year-old quarter
horse purchased from Heather Clemmons,
one of two trainers her parents hired to help
McKenna. Clemmons, from Okeechobee,
is her roping and barrel racing trainer. Patty
Waters works with her on her barrel racing

and poles.
McKenna also competes in goat tying
and pole bending.
"I practice every day for about an hour,"
she says. The practice arena is currently be-
hind her grandparents' house in Belle Glade,
but soon she will have a new arena when
she moves with her parents to Okeechobee.
Her grandparents are Johnny and Glenda
Taylor.
Mrs. Hickson says the rodeo circuit is very
family oriented.
"You get a lot of family time together,"
she says.
During the rodeo season, which runs
August through May, families pack up on
Friday and go to various arenas from as far
as Lake City to the north, to the Seminole
Indian Reservation in South Florida. They
come back home weary and late on Sunday
evening. The Hickson's horse trailer has liv-
ing quarters where they stay while on the
road.
Spending all that time with other fami-
lies with the same passion, you become
friends, and McKenna says she will miss her
friends.
"It's sad," she said, "because I won't get
to see them for a while."
She wants to congratulate one of her
friends, Emma Flower from Loxahatchee
who won the Pole Bending competition and
Kamryn and Kendall Kennedy of Pahokee
who just joined the rodeo team this year.
"It was their first year riding and they did
well also," she said.
Mrs. Hickson says she is grateful to spon-
sors Everglades Farm Equipment, Growers

Management and Southern Waste Systems
for supporting the rodeo team.
McKenna says she's thankful to her dad
for all the time and money he puts into her
rodeo career. She reflects that he sacrificed
hobbies he likes, such as fishing and air
boating, so he could take her to lessons and
rodeos.
"Without him, I wouldn't be able to do
this," she says. "All he asks me to do is do my
best. I want to please him by just going out

there and trying."
McKenna's goal in life is to be a profes-
sional barrel racer. She is currently a third
grader at Glades Day School, but someday,
she hopes to attend college in Texas at a
school that has a rodeo team. For now,
she's just happy doing what she loves; rid-
ing, competing in rodeos and being with her
horses.
It's a little girl's dream come true.

A beautiful saddle and belt buckle were the rewards for McKenna Hickson when she won
the Florida Junior Rodeo Association Saddle competition May 14th at the Brighton Indian
Reservation.
