VSA Arts a success

Tiny Miss
Black Gold
Jaci Deann Dulany,
daughter of DeWitt and
Sherrie Dulany of Belle
Glade, won the Tiny Miss
Black Gold Jubilee Pag-
eant Friday, March 26,
2010. She was an ador-
able vision in a little pink,
sparkly dress! Jaci is four
years old and attends
Pre K3 at Glades Day
School. She enjoys play-
ing blocks with her mom
and playing with her dog,
Fella. When Jaci grows
up she wants to be a chef
so that she can cook food
for those that don't have
any food. Her favorite foods are spaghetti and calamari. Jaci
was very excited about getting to wear a crown and winning
a trophy, a sash and beautiful roses. Her most exciting prize,
besides the crown, was the goody bag of candy! Congratula-
tions to the 2010 Tiny Miss Black Gold Jubilee, Jaci Dulany!

With 20 years of community

the people of Palm Beach County,

particularly those who are in need
the most.
Mr. Jackson has served as a

expertise as a candidate," Mr.
Jackson said.
After an unsuccessful cam-

The future of drama

in the Glades

Local students take
in fine arts, while it
lasts

By Ashley Causey
Special to The Sun
Wednesday, March 24 and
Thursday, March 25, Glades Cen-
tral Thespians performed a hi-
larious play called "The Reduced
Shakespeare's Complete Works of
William Shakespeare, Abridged."
Although that is a mouth full
to say, the actors, Ruben Resen-
dez Jr., Fladumy Orleus, Bertrum
McPhee, and the supporting
roles, Christela Louis-Jeune and
Roberson Michaud, managed to
fit Shakespeare's 37 plays into a
two-hour performance.
The idea for the performance
came from Sarah Bennett, Glades

Central's drama director, who
once saw "The Reduced Shake-
speare's Complete Works ol
William Shakespeare, Abridged"
many years ago in London.
"I had to wait until I had the
right actors to do a play like this.
Ruben, Fladumy and Bertrum
were the three guys I knew who
could do this play," Mrs. Bennetl
said.
Using the stage as their play-
ground, they involved the audi-
ence in every twist and turn ol
Shakespeare's comedies, trag-
edies and histories.
The journey was not only en-
joyable for the actors but also the
audience in attendance. It seemed
to demonstrate the importance ol
drama education in schools.
Drama is often view as just an

Non-profits offer staffing help
In order to handle more efficiently the
r increased demand for services and the in-
creased workload it has placed on service

ment is allowing the Department of Children

munity agencies that are willing to share the
costs. The government will pay 50 percent
of the cost for an employee with the "host
agency" paying the other 50 percent. This is
an excellent opportunity to obtain additional

staff process benefit applications, while serv-
ing those in need who come to your agency
for help. To be a past of this expansion op-
portunity or for more information contact

Creek campground improvements under way

FWC Report
Springtime's arrival is ushering in excit-
ing happenings at the Florida Fish and Wild-
life Conservation Commission's Fisheating
Creek Wildlife Management Area in Glades
County.
The swallow-tailed kites are back from
South America, and the campground is get-
ting a facelift.

Campground renovations include con-
struction of a new camp store and visitor
check-in building, repairs to the bathhous-
es and a general spruce up.
During demolition and construction
of the camp store, traffic will be rerouted
through an interim visitor check-in.
Visitors just need to follow all signs and
instructions when entering and exiting the
campground.

Workers expect to complete the im-
provement project in June.
A new concessionaire, Fisheating Creek
Outpost, Inc., is operating at the camp-
ground.
The Outpost will continue to offer high
quality recreational experiences at the
campground and on the creek.
Look for a variety of new interpretive
tours and programs in the near future.

A blessed inheritance; the
gift to us at Easter
By The Reverend Samuel S.
Thomas, Ph. D.+
Saint Martin's Church, Clewiston
One mother, when her husband died,
told me of her children coming to her, each
asking for an ornament that their father had
worn during his life.
They didn't ask for money or property, or
what was going to become of the posses-
sions that he had; only a simple ornament
worth a few dollars.
It was his, and stood for their home, day
by day, a sign of their lives together and
something each wanted to share with his
own children.
It was special and a sign of family, and
to share with the next generation as it had
in the past one. The mother was sort of
amused by it all; but she knew that this gift
was worth more than all of the other things
that might have been handed down.
Others have told me about similar sym-
bols of life; one person wishing to settle
property told me about "everything going
out the window over a $35.00 table!"
More than just worldly things were in-
volved; things that pointed to life were at
stake and prized by those who knew of their
special meaning.
Jesus, when speaking about His sheep,
tells us "I have come that they may have life,
and have it to the full (John 10:10)." He will
lay down His life for them and then go to
prepare a place for them, and He tells His
disciples "And if I go and prepare a place for
you, I will come back to take you with me
that you also may be where I am (ch. 14,
v.3)."
Easter is about an empty tomb. What is
celebrated is that death was not the end for
Jesus; His followers would go on to live with
Him and share eternal life.
That was THE gift, the inheritance, the
treasure to be passed forward for all of the
generations to come.
The empty tomb is the proof that His life
was not ended, but changed and because of
it, our lives will not be ended but changed
too. Amidst all of the celebration and fan-
fare, the gift of life for us is at the bottom
of it all.
The Easter story is about abundant life
given to each of us by the death that was not
really an end but a new beginning.
With all of our problems, disappoint-
ments, set-backs, losses, tragedies, hard-
ships, complaints in this life and things hu-
man beings suffer; there is that gift of life to
come; when what we do to each other or
to ourselves, or what has happened through
nobody's fault, will all be offered up as the
Lord Himself offered it up on Good Friday.
The offering was not without a blessing;
that blessing is Easter.
With it all came the gift of eternal life in
Heaven; why Easter is the special gift to be
passed on and sought by those who are a
part of the family-God's family.
And there is more than enough for every-
one!

Pride goes before the fall

By Pastor John Hicks
First United Methodist Church
They say that pride is the mother of the
vices. It is the reason that angels fell.
Recently, I was invited to contribute to
several charity dessert auctions along with
some very talented bakers.
I joined these culinary experts in helping
to raise money to support everything from
missions, to youth ministry, to our local mu-
seum.
In each of these events, at least one of
these talented bakers had a kitchen disas-
ter. I applaud them for putting pride aside
and bringing their dishes anyway. They truly
humbled themselves.
And like those who get lifted up by hum-
bling themselves before the Lord (James
4:10), they were lifted up. Believe it or not,
the "cracked red velvet cake", the "orange
cake pieces," and the "stuck-in-the-pan
strawberry cheesecake" all brought in sig-
nificant donations for great causes.
Loss would have been felt if the bak-
ers had left the desserts at home. A greater
loss would have been felt if they had tried
to cover up their imperfections instead of
openly admitting them. People can relate
to our shortcomings. We get into trouble
when pride and haughtiness enter into the
picture.
Alice baked a cake for the ladies' group
bake sale, but when she took the cake from
the oven, the center had dropped and the
cake was horribly disfigured.
There was no time to bake another cake.
Thinking quickly, she looked around the
house for something to build up the center
of the cake, and ended up grabbing a roll of
toilet paper. She plunked it in and covered it
with icing.
It looked perfect.
Before she left the house to drop off the
cake and head for work, Alice woke her
daughter and gave her specific instructions
to buy the cake the minute the bake sale
opened.
When the daughter arrived at the sale,
she found that the cake had already been
sold. She grabbed her cell phone and called
Alice. Alice was horrified.
The next day, Alice attended a luncheon
at the home of a friend of a friend. Alice
didn't really want to go because the host-
ess was a snob who more than once had
looked down her nose at the fact that Alice
was a single parent and not from one of the
founding families of the community, but she
couldn't think of a believable excuse to stay
home.
Alice felt the blood drain from her body
when she saw the dessert come out after the
meal. It was her cake.
Alice started to rush to tell her hostess
all about it, but before she could get to her
feet, the Mayor's wife said, "What a beauti-
ful cake!"
Alice, who was still stunned, sat back
down when she heard the hostess say,
"Thank you, I baked it myself." Alice just
smiled and kept quiet.
We smile, too, but the author of Proverbs
was right. Pride does go before destruction
and a haughty spirit before a fall. (16:18)

Resurrection Victory!

By Jackie Miller, Evangelist
First Christian Church
Remember the headlines at the end of
World Wars I and II? They screamed "VIC-
TORY"! Well that's what Easter is! Only
the war lasted thousands of years and the
stakes were far greater!
"The strife is o'er, the battle done. The
Victory of life is won! The song of triumph
has begun. Alleluia!"
That's it! The victory of life over death!
You want to live, don't you? And you fear
death? Then here's good news for you! "The
powers of death have done their worst,
But Christ their legions has dispersed. Let's
shouts of holy joy out burst! Alleluia!"
What a battle! Satan had gotten man to
sin. He enjoys our suffering and death. No
one was strong enough to defeat him. Ev-
eryone was headed for hell and damnation.
Then came Jesus Christ!
He said, "I have the power to lay down my
life and I have the power to take it up again."
How could anyone say that? He was either a
madman or the very Son of God. And what
you do with Him determines which of those
two you prefer.
He didn't die as a victim of violence or
even as a martyr. He came into this world to
pay the awful price of man's sin. He volun-
tarily gave His life. And because He is God,
He took it up again!
He wasn't raised by some other power.
He has ALL POWER! The power to close
hell; the power to open heaven; the pow-
er to cleanse you from all sin; the power

change millions.
And one day soon He will come again to
wipe out everything evil and take us home
to glory! Which side will you be on? "He
closed the yawning gates of hell; The bars
of heaven's high portals fell; Let hymns of
praise His triumph tell! Alleluai!"
His resurrection proved His power over
sin and death has been broken. He is the
Lord of life and death and you may share in
HIs mastery be true faith in Him as Savior
and Lord.
He wants you to believe that He died
for you sin, was buried and arose from the
dead! That's the Gospel! (I Cor. 15:1-4) He
wants you to repent of your sin (Luke 13:3).
He wants you to Confess faith in Him before
men. (Matthew 10:32-33).
He wants you to be bapizd (immersed)
for salvation, the remission of sins and to
receive the Holy Spirit. (Mark 16:15-16; Acts
2:38). He wants you to experience "walking
in newness of life". (Romans 6:3-5).
He wants you to be a part of His church
and continue faithful to Him until He returns.
(Acts 2:41-42; I Cor. 15:58; Revelation 2:10).
Shout for joy! When you take Jesus as
your Lord and Savior you not only escape
death, but you begin to live!
Fabulous! Victory! Easter! The Lord is
Risen! Hallelujah!

Playful mimes
With great weather, a friendly atmosphere in the crowds of people who came,
and the willingness of local students to put a smile on everyone's face, the
VSA Arts Festival was a terrific way to spend the morning last Friday.

Having fun and learning
With no shortage of activities and games throughout the day, VSA Arts par-
ticipants had fun at the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center in Belle Glade.

IN I/Jose Zaragoza

A time to let it all hang out
More than a few adults turned into perfectly happy kids during the VSA Arts
Festival, donning meticulous crafts and generally having the time of their
lives. The happiness of the kids was contagious.

Jackson
Continued From Page 1

the county seat, Mr. Jackson has noticed the
questioning of his loyalty, after serving un-
der Jess Santamaria and now facing the pos-
sibility of running against him. Mr. Jackson
expected the fallout.
"It is my loyalty that has always guided
me to do the right thing by and for people,"
he said.
Mr. Jackson served as Commissioner
Santamaria's District 6 liaison via an inde-
pendent contractor's agreement approved
by the county commission. Mr. Jackson was
not sure when he would run for office again
until after he spoke to Commissioner San-
tamaria, who made it clear that he would
not seek a second term in 2010. Mr. Jackson
said.
"Plain and simple, the plan was for me
to consider joining his team as a liaison to
the Glades' region and he would serve as a
type of mentor with the understanding that
I would make a run in 2010," Mr. Jackson
said.
Should Commissioner Santamaria seek
another term, Mr. Jackson hopes the two
will remain "political allies."
"I highly respect Commissioner Santa-
maria, as he made commitments from the
very beginning to help with the historical
issues and challenges facing the Glades'
region, but my decision to run for office is
far greater and bigger than any person or
personality," he said, adding that he recently
called the commissioner to inform him of
his decision.
Jackson has decided to qualify as a can-
didate through the petition process, which
requires signatures from approximately 1
percent of the voters from the district. The
signatures are due to the supervisor of elec-
tions office no later than noon on May 17.

Drama
Continued From Page 1

elective, an extra option to fill the class se-
lection sheet but Mrs. Bennett, explains why
drama is much more.
"I believe theater arts are a complete edu-
cation. If we had more of theater, fine arts,
visual arts, music and more, we would have
better, well-rounded students," she said. "In
theater and stagecraft, they read, use math
and critical thinking skills."
Fladumy Orleus shares his experience.
"At first I saw drama as lame and boring,"
Fladumy said with a laugh. "Drama made
me realize that it's okay to have fun and be
yourself."
His classmates agree.
"I spent my first two years doing sports. I
walked into drama class by accident and fell
in love with it," said Ruben Resendez Jr.
"I fell in love with theater with my role
as Bobo in A Raisin in the Sun.' It was right
then and there when I knew this was where
I belonged," Bertrum McPhee explained.
With so many benefits streaming from
the performing arts, the question is: Why is
it so not well received in the Glades?
"It goes back to tradition," Mrs. Bennett

He said he wishes to have ample time to
launch a successful campaign that residents
could "investigate, understand and ultimate-
ly support."
Already, there are those who support
him.
"Michael E. Jackson not only has a heart
for people but understands the inner work-
ings of the county government and how that
affects District 6. Those who know Michael
understand that he is a person who exhibits
wisdom and the ability to direct the affairs
of government diplomatically, especially in
dealing with important public issues," said
close friend Rita Reyes, who called Mr. Jack-
son a "true statesman."
Even students are supporting Mr. Jack-
son's bid.
"I have known Mr. Jackson for a few
years now and I have seen his love for the
community," said Uriah Johnson, a senior at
Glades Day School. "I am excited to see him
running again for this position, there is a lot
going on in our community and county and
I believe that Mr. Jackson is able to commu-
nicate and help come up with solutions to
benefit Palm Beach County."
For the next eight months, Mr. Jackson
will assess the issues of the Glades and ex-
amine how the county can play a part in ad-
dressing them.
"We are at a time in this county's his-
tory, like most counties and communities
throughout this country that will require a
greater commitment to working together
with other local, state and federal govern-
mental entities like no time before due to
the national financial crisis that we find our-
selves in," he said. "Throughout this cam-
paign and beyond, I will work, recommend
and forge meaningful relationships with
local, state and federal intergovernmental
agencies ... to help move us beyond our col-
lective stalled positions due to the economic
uncertainties that we face."

said. "Sports have provided a way for many
of the Glades children to receive scholar-
ships and thrive in college. Theater students
do not get such recognition for their accom-
plishments. Unfortunately," Mrs. Bennett
sadly notes, "They don't appreciate the art
our young people are trying to produce."
The lack of support from the Glades is
not the only problem facing the arts. Across
the state, arts programs in many schools are
losing their funding.
Mrs. Bennett herself is an active member
of FATE, Florida Association of Theater Edu-
cators.
"Here at Glades Central, our art programs
are in danger due to our low FCAT score. Be-
cause of this, our fine arts, visual arts, and
music classes have all been taken away and
replaced with more reading, math, writing,
and critical thinking classes."
The impact of drama is definite in the
Glades. It is an art form that is fighting for
recognition and survival within the ever
changing high school system.
Mrs. Bennett reminisces, "I used to teach
a full load of drama classes. I had three dra-
ma classes and two stagecraft classes. Now
I only have just one drama class.
"We are hoping that things will change
so we will be able to add these programs
back into our curriculum."
