The last week shooting deaths of a Villages couple are being considered a murder-suicide by law enforcement investigators. Last Friday, Oct. 10, deputies found the bodies of Thomas Rich, 73, and his wife Noel Rich, 66, in the couples home on Oak Forest Drive, in The Villages, according to a Sumter sheriffs office report. Deputies arrived at the home at 11:12 a.m. after friends of Mrs. Rich reported they had not seen or heard from her since Wednesday, Oct. 8, according to the sheriffs office report. The friends told law enforcement officials that they were concerned because of the couples recent divorce proceedings. When deputies arrived at the home, they discovered the body of Noel Rich lying on a bedroom bed, the report states. An autopsy by the 5th Judicial Circuit Medical Examiners Office determined the following day that she died from gunshot wounds to her back. The body of Thomas Rich was discovered in the adjoining bathroom. The medical examiners office determined the following day that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face and neck area, according to the report. An investigation is continuing. The project is in support of the Florida Department of Transportations (FDOT) roadside litter prevention media campaign. The campagin was released earlier this year, it is called Drive it homeKeep Our Paradise Litter Free. Across the state, FDOH has adopted over 100 miles of roads, trails, beaches and parks to help keep them litter free. Locally, 21 employees of the Florida Department of Health in Sumter County will participate in Florida Health Cleans Up! Four times per year, two miles of Anne R. Fields Memorial Highway (County Road 476) will be swept by this team, beginning on Oct.24. FDOH Sumter hopes to lead by example as it works to promote a healthy and active lifestyle. FDOH Sumter Health Officer Dr. Sanford Zelnick reports that Fast-food street litter presents a subtle form of negative health messaging, both from an environmental health perspective and a human health perspective. Our clean-up activities will demonstrate the commitment the Florida Departments of Health and Transportation make to encourage positive health behaviors. We encourage other local civic organizations to consider similar activities to strengthen community partnerships in this regard. Florida Health Cleans Up! is a venture of Healthiest Weight Florida, a public-private collaboration bringing together state agencies, not-for-profit organizations, businesses and entire communities to help Floridas children and adults make consistent, informed choices about healthy eating and active living. The departments goal is to encourage physical activity while emphasizing how small choices affect your health and environment. Vernon Adrian Richardson, 33, Leesburg, was arrested for larceny and fraud. He was placed in the Sumter County Detention Center with bond set at $5,000. Richardson was one of the store managers at Arbys Restaurant, 4130 Wedgewood Lane, in The Villages, according to a sheriffs report. The owner of the restaurant informed law enforcement officers last Tuesday, Oct. 7, that he had documentation revealing Richardson taking money from the store since January. Richardson is accused of taking almost $37,000 from January until October. The restaurant owner discovered that Richardson was repeatedly making bogus cash refunds and keeping the money, according to the report. His actions were also captured on the stores video camera. Richardson admitted to investigators that he did take money from the cash register. He said he initially took money to pay personal bills but just did not stop, the report states. PAGEA4SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, OCTOBER16, 2014 Letters to the editor Whoa, stop and think!Recently there was a letter stating What Liberals Did. Social Security caught my attention first. SS was great for my Grandmother and I have received benefits. My children/grandchildren will possibly get nothing for their 5 to 30 years of contributions. We often hear that there are few funds left for our kids. Medicare was interesting also. The recently passed Affordable Care Act took a large sum out of Medicare and the elderly are beginning to see those results with less benefits available. And we do pay as premiums are deducted from our SS checks each month. Mismanagement has caused both of these programs to be diminished. One thing not mentioned was the severe loss of jobs during the last 6 years. A recent study reported in a local newspaper states that 20% of the workforce laid off for the last five years have not yet found work. This led to massive unemployment benefits that were then followed by disability claims when no jobs could be found. The disability payments are part of the Social Security fund. When everyone is taking out and no one is putting in, the fund disappears. Unemployment means that fewer are paying employment taxes and thus those on welfare may see their funds disappear also. And why go in debt to go to college if there are so few jobs available when you finish. The rich have never gotten richer by taking from the poor. The worker only benefits when someone creates a job to help them get ahead. As in sports, sales or any business success encourages more success. Lets get to work and make this a better world for all of us. Vote! Marcia Taylor, BushnellEncouraging school mealsHow encouraging to see the Sarasota County school system embracing Meatless Mondays and providing vegetarian lunch options the rest of the week! The districts food and nutrition manager got it right: Scaling back on meat will help improve students health and the health of the planet. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that vegetarians and vegans enjoy lower rates of heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cancer as well as lower blood cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and lower body mass indexes. Scientists have also found that vegetarians have stronger immune systems than their meat-eating friends, meaning that Sarasota schools could see an increase in attendance. And because of animal agricultures devastating impact on the Earth, the United Nations concluded that raising animals for food is one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global. The Sarasota County School District is helping to keep Florida beautiful. The schools are also saving the lives of countless animals every year. I hope that every other Florida school follows Sarasotas lead. Sincerely, Michelle Kretzer Dunedin You know what really irks me? When people at work dont turn off the bathroom light when theyre done. Our company is trying to reduce expenses and one of the easiest things to do is Turn. Off. The. Light! I dont know if its a problem with the mens bathroom, although Im guessing it is. So, men: Turn. Off. The. Light. Too! There, I said it, and that sure felt good. That irks me, but what really irks me is how wellmeaning religious people misrepresent God and what it means to be a Christian. I think about this a lot, mainly because I have a number of people I pray for regularly to find faith in Christ. However, from comments some of them make, I think they think that being a Christian means you have to become weird, live a life of guilt and frustration trying to follow a bunch of rules and never really feel comfortable in your own skin. Also, they seem to think that God loves sinners and welcomes them as his own through faith in Jesus, which is true, but that once youre in the family his love turns conditional. You may be saved by grace, but once that happens you need to toe the line, mind your ps and qs, work hard to justify your gift of salvation, they believe. Theyve heard things like, Yes, Gods grace is amazing, but dont take advantage of it and Jesus died for you, now what are you willing to do for him? Some Christians (and most non Christians) believe that church is a place you go to feel bad about yourself so youll be prodded to go out and be better. Guilt is a great motivator, except it doesnt last. Or if it does, it just makes you insecure, neurotic and depressed. So, you fake it, which just makes being a Christian look like a miserable existence and who would want that? Not the people Im praying for, and that irks me. Recently, I heard a pastor talk about this very thing. He was cranky too about the way some Christians misuse the scriptures to keep people in line, in particular the scripture about how God disciplines all he considers to be his children (Hebrews 12:3-13). He said some interpret that to mean if you mess up, God will send bad things your way your business will fail, your dog will eat your favorite shoes, youll get an ugly rash on your face. He said, I cant tell you how many times Ive been with Christians going through hard times who inevitably ask, What did I do wrong? It doesnt help that wellmeaning people come along and say, You must have sin in your life or this wouldnt be happening to you. He said, If there was a direct correlation between your sin and bad things happening, wed all be dead. But thats what some people think. He said the Greek word for discipline does not mean punishment, but instruction and restraint. Sometimes it involves pain, but its not punishment. Jesus took our deserved punishment at the Cross. So, God doesnt punish us, and hes not poised to pounce on us when we stray. He doesnt play gotcha, takes no delight in our suffering, even if its the result of our own actions. He uses our pain to get our attention and then he shows us mercy and grace. For God, the pastor said, its all about the party hes throwing for us. Its about freedom and laughter and being secure in his love. Its about knowing youre forgiven everything past, present and future. Its about being given someone elses righteousness and not being required to pay it back or even pay it forward, although sometimes you do because you overwhelmingly want to. Its about God gathering party guests, calling his children home, even running to greet them with open arms as they stumble toward him, often broken and battered, in desperate need of kindness and forgiveness, which he offers freely, no strings attached. Does God discipline? Of course he does, the pastor said. Hes your Father, and he loves you so much that there cant be a party unless youre there. Its the reason he disciplines. Its the party, dummy! During the October meeting of the Sumter County Retired Educators Association, members learned just how important they are. Important, that is, in helping to maintain the excellent benefits earned by the folks the states education system who retire. The trend creeping across the nation is to reduce and/or redirect benefits intended to be paid to retirees. Thanks to the efforts of the members of SCREA and their parent organization, FREA, representatives in Tallahassee are empowered to protect education benefits. That was the message delivered by Barbara Bowes as guest speaker for the meeting, as she focused on health insurance issues that are vital to retirees. Along with their regular meeting and guest speaker, members collected their monthly donations of food to the Hope Center in Bushnell. The center provides services and food for those in need. In light of the importance of the groups membership numbers, the SCREA representative notes they are looking for retired or soon-to-retire employees from the education system food service, paraprofessionals, and custodial, teaching, admin istration. The organization members issue an invitation to join them and help them in serving the community in new ways. The founder of the organization that led to the founding of AARP was moved by the plight of her own staff as they retired and were met with a future and no benefits. Benefits are in place, but the caring goes beyond that. The organization helps members to keep in touch with, pray for and encourage other members. A sharing time is a part of the monthly agenda. The invitation open and the next meeting will be at 10:45 a.m. on Dec. 4 in the fellowship hall of the First Baptist Church of Bushnell. Otherwise, South Sumter boosted its record to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in Class 5A-District 6 play with a 3612 triumph Friday in Brooksville. Hernando is now 1-4 and 1-2. Raiders quarterback Reace Kinley hit Rickey Tenorio for a touchdown pass. Bokeyon Rice ran three-yards for a touchdown. That score capped an 80-yard drive. Hernando gave the Raiders two points when punter Brad Ellis stepped out of the end zone on a punt attempt. South Sumter has only allowed 22 points this year. The Raiders always have their share of standouts. B.J. Hudson had a great interception for us, said South Sumter High head coach Inman Sherman. Hes the Defensive Player of the Week. He had three tackles also. He made a very athletic play for a cool interception. Caleb Simmons is Offensive Player of the Week. He is our center. He continues to make excellent blocks for us. Another pesky district foe will play South Sumter this week. The Raiders face Nature Coast Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Raiders Field. Nature Coast (3-3, 3-1) has a chance to be runnerup in the district. Nature Coast lost 17-14 to Zephyrhills in Pasco County Friday. Nature Coast beat Pasco earlier this season. Nature Coast and Zephyrhills both have one district loss and Nature Coast would absolutely love to be the district team that beats South Sumter. The Raiders want to claim the district title for the third time and stay undefeated overall and in the district. For us, its the district championship game, Sherman said. They have one loss in the district. They are a very good football team. It will be a battle for us. They have very exciting offensive players and good defensive players. Its Senior Night for us. Im glad its home for us. LARRYBUGG Times Correspondent The Raiders face Nature Coast on Friday night Wildwood Wildcats need district win very badly There is no way to underplay the importance of Friday nights Wildwood football game with Pierson Taylor. Both teams are in a three-team Class 1A district. They play at 7:30 p.m. there. Wildwood has lost to Crescent City. If Wildwood can beat Pierson Taylor, the Wildcats, now 0-5 overall, can possibly qualify for the playoffs and one more game after the season ends. If the Wildcats lose, the season is practically over for them. Pierson Taylor is a good ball club, said Wildwood coach Beau Austin. They are well coached. They have great offensive and defensive lines. They get off the ball really well. They run a 4-4 defense. Unfortunately, Austin said his team has only 20 members and the team is not physically in good shape. They are young as well and several players have to play both offense and defense. We are pretty banged up, Austin said. We have four or five who are out with various injuries. Nobody is out for the season. Wildwood lost to Umatilla 52-0 Friday and the score reflects the game. Austin could recall no highlights. We had a lot of penalties, he said. We made a lot of mistakes that we can control. We didnt do anything as a team. We played well early but made a lot of mistakes. Wildwood cannot afford mistakes tomorrow. They need to play their best game of the season and hope that they can win and stay alive in the playoffs. LARRYBUGG Times Correspondent If Wildwood can beat Pierson Taylor, the Wildcats, now 0-5 overall, can possibly qualify for the playoffs

SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, OCTOBER16, 2014, PAGEA9 FROM THE GROUND UP Question: I planted a gardenia bush in my yard. The buds are falling off. What could be the cause?Answer:Bud drop on gardenias can be caused by a variety of things. Probably the most common reason for gardenia buds falling off plants is a change in location. Gardenias do not like to be disturbed. They are extremely sensitive to being moved or even touched. Given your plant is relatively new to its current location, it may just need time to acclimate. Dropping of buds on gardenia bushes can also be due to improper watering. Gardenias like to be kept moist. If they are allowed to dry out too much, they will respond by dropping their buds. Keep the soil evenly moist. For more info on Gardenias: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ep338Question:Can you suggest a tree that provides good fall color?Answer:You bet. Try the Red Maple (Acer rubrum). Its a medium to large-sized deciduous tree that produces tiny, red, very showy flower clusters prior to new leaf growth in the spring. The red maple is exceptionally beautiful in fall with color ranging from soft yellow to reddish leaves. It grows to a height of 40-60 feet and a spread of 20-40 feet. The best cultivars for our area are Red Sunset and October Glory. For more info: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/st047Question: We have recently remodeled our home and the lawn on the side of the house has suffered due to traffic from contractor equipment. Im considering having my lawn aerated. When is the best time to do this?Answer:Soil compaction problem result from the top 4 inches of the soil becoming compressed, impeding the movement of air, water and nutrients to the grass roots. This stresses the grass plants, making them less able to compete with weeds and slow to recuperate from injury. Aeration loosens compacted soil and increases the availability of water and nutrients. Our warm-season grasses such as zoysiagrass and St. Augustine grass are best aerated in late spring and summer, when they are actively growing. UF/IFAS-created strawberry monitoring system to expand A strawberry monitoring web system that will soon expand to South Carolina is one of many reasons a University of Florida faculty member has won the Lee M. Hutchins Award from the American Phytopathological Society (APS). The Hutchins award goes to the author or authors of significant published research on basic or applied aspects of diseases of perennial fruit plants, according to the societys website. APS is probably the most prestigious society worldwide in our field of plant pathology, so I am very honored with the nomination and the award, said Natalia Peres, an associate professor of plant pathology at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Balm. With the help of Clyde Fraisse, an Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences colleague, Peres released the Strawberry Advisory System in 2012 to help Florida growers. The tool uses data such as temperature and leaf wetness to tell growers when to spray fungicide to ward off diseases. Before the system was developed, strawberry farmers traditionally sprayed weekly during the November-to-March growing season. Spraying more often than needed wastes money and can lead to fungicide resistance, she said. Pete Timmer, a retired plant pathology professor at the Citrus Research and Education Center in Lake Alfred, nominated Peres, citing the web system, among her many accomplishments. Peres has excelled in virtually everything she has chosen to do, Timmer wrote in his nomination letter. One of her challenges upon arrival in Florida was to improve the control of strawberry diseases. Many models for plant diseases exist in the literature, but few have found acceptance by growers and been effective in controlling diseases and reducing fungicide applications. Timmer said once Peres model had proven effective, she worked with Fraisse, a UF/IFAS associate professor of agricultural and biological engineering, to establish the web tool. Growers can use the system by logging onto www.agroclimate.org/tools/strawberry ,or use the website to sign up for email or text alerts. Peres, who won the award in August, said she expects the strawberry web tool to be used in South Carolina this spring. Shes also tested it in Iowa, North Carolina and Ohio. The system has proved successful in the latter three states, but scientists still must work on how to automatically access the weather data, she said. She also has won a $114,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to develop a similar spray monitoring system for blueberries. That project will start in January, and Peres expects to have the system in place for growers in two years. Evening Gardener sets class The telephone number for the Sumter County Extension Off ice has been changed. The new number is 569-6865. UF/IFAS file photoThe Strawberry Advisory System, invented by UF/IFAS plant pathology associate professor Natalia Peres, seen here, with help from a UF/IFAS colleague, helps growers know when to spray fungicide. The web tool is expanding to South Carolina and perhaps to other states soon. Deadline for application has not been announced but is generally set for late December or January. Students are encouraged to begin their volunteer hours as soon as possible. An application form is required for the scholarship, which is available from the high school counselor. The full criteria are listed here. Scholarship application process: Applicants must live in Lake Panasoffkee, FL zip code 33538 or Sumterville, FL zip code 33585 for current and prior school years. Proof of residency may be requested. Applicants must volunteer for a minimum of 10 hours specifically for the benefit of the Friends of the Panasoffkee Community Library, Inc. The deadline has not yet been set, but usually is the end of December or January. The hours will be worked in the library bookstore known as PAGES Bookstore inside the library but not for the library itself. The applicant must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 unweighted or above (on a 4.0 scale) for grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 (semester 1). GPA must be certified by a high school official. Questions asked on the application form include financial need (familys adjusted gross income from last years tax return), other financial considerations, number of people in the family, the students ultimate career goal, what post-secondary institution he/she plans to enter immediately after graduation, extracurricular activities and achievements (including offices held, awards, letters, etc.), community activities or club memberships (that require community service and include as one of the activities 10 hours of verified volunteer time for the benefit of Friends of the Panasoffkee Community Library, Inc., prior to January 2014), church or civic activities, citizenship and attendance, a studentwritten essay explaining why the student should receive the scholarship, how the student will spend the money (books, buy a computer, or pay for tuition/fees/room and board, etc.), and references (from a teacher, counselor, minister, employer). The application forms are distributed at a senior meeting by the counselor in December 2014. At the meeting the counselor gives each student a scholarship book that lists various local and state scholarships. The Sumter Schools Enhancement Foundation Steering Committee chooses the recipients in April and scholarships are awarded in May for the scholarships offered by Friends of the Panasoffkee Community Library, Inc. The Friends group looks forward to offering these scholarships and strives to maximize the scholarship benefits each year. Our new PAGES bookstore provides an ideal volunteer and library user opportunity, said Denise Atherton, Vice President of The Friends. The Panasoffkee library branch building was expanded and now includes a book room, known as PAGES Bookstore. PAGES is staffed by volunteers of the Friends of the Panasoffkee Community Library, Inc. where books can be purchased at a nominal fee inside the library on Wednesdays or Saturdays 10 a.m.-Noon. Bookstore wants more volunteers to enable expanding the available bookstore hours. Questions about the 10 volunteer hours for the Friends group may be directed to the Friends board member Wendel Martinkovic at (352) 5688277. Applications for the scholarship are through the high school counselor. The Friends of Panasoffkee Community Library, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. SCHOLARContinued from Page A8 Opposed by many humane organizations, breed specific legislation (BSL) has been enacted in approximately 700 U. S. cities in 43 states in our country. The legislation either bans or regulates specific breeds and mixes of these breeds that local city governments consider dangerous. Breeds deemed dangerous varies in each city. The list of breeds include not only the American Pit Bull terriers, but Staffordshire Bull Terriers, English Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers and dogs that may resemble these breeds. Humane organization and animal activists alike oppose this legislation. They believe that the responsible dog owners/guardians of any of the above breeds should not be penalized or discriminated against. It is unfair to impart strict regulations or a ban on responsible dog owners that have well socialized and friendly dogs that are properly supervised. Not only humane organizations disagree with breed specific legislation, so too does the AKC and many veterinarians. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has studied many factors that regardless of breed, may lead toward a tendency of aggression. Unneutered male dogs account for 70 percent of all dog bites, and 97 percent of fatal dog attacks in 2006 were by dogs that were not spayed or neutered. Dogs that are chained, abused, or neglected were more likely to be aggressive. For these reasons, the CDC believes that breed specific legislation does not effectively protect the public as it is intended to. We all believe dangerous dogs are a serious concern. But humane activists believe the irresponsible owners should be held accountable for their dogs actions, no matter what the breed. And some states such as New York, Illinois, and Texas agree. These states prohibit breed specific legislation. Instead their laws regulate dangerous dogs as individual cases, regardless of breed. On a recent vacation, my two dogs Hanna Banana and Gabriel made a new friend. The tail wagging wiggly butt pit bull couldnt have been friendlier. And have you met Annie the Rottweiler and Shane the German Shepherd? They live right here in Sumter County. Annie greets everyone she meets with a big Rottie smile and happy wagging tail. And Shane is a huge white German Shepherd is so calm and gentle. These dogs are loved and cared for, and properly socialized by their responsible guardians. Prejudging a dog because of its breed sadly puts at risk the lives of many great dogs. Every dog is an individual and deserves to be treated as such.
