Established in 1881 50 CentsTIMES INSIDE INSIDESUMTER COUNTY Giving quilts Giving quilts Icould hear them in the walls squealing and squeaking and squawking. I wasnt sure what it was, but I was definitely afraid it was a mouse family or a something bigger family. Ugh shudder. I could hear it in the ceiling, to the left of where I sit in the office, so I ran out to purchase rodent remover lots of rodent remover. I got the heebie-jeebies every time I heard the chorus of squeals, hoping the sound would stop and the rodents would go away. EEEEEKKKKK! I got a little excited when I heard the squeals at the same time that I noticed a bird kicking off from an outside pipe. Could it be the bird was carnivorous and after the rodents? Living the Linden legacyThrongs of south Sumter County residents and visitors gathered Saturday in Linden for what is likely the county's oldest continuing event. The Linden Cemetery Picnic annually brings out families and friends for a combination fund-raising barbecue and extended community reunion. This year was no exception, with visitors and relatives coming from Tampa, Tallahassee, Georgia, Tennessee and numerous other communities around central Florida. It is a long-standing tradition for the community. The year of origin varies depending upon the source, but most everyone agrees that the picnic has been held for more than a century. This year's picnic is about the 117th, according to William Carlisle, who has produced two books on the history of the picnic and is working on a third version to be released the summer of 2015. When they are asked, many of the picnic volunteer workers and they are many will tell about their family members that were involved from the historical beginnings of the event. There were even a few of those attending who were fighting cancer and had set making it to the picnic as a goal, said Gail Burry, treasurer of the Linden Cemetery Association. At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, Sumter County Fire & EMS and the Villages Public Safety Department responded to a report of a train and tractor-trailer truck collision at U.S. 301 and C.R. 104 in Oxford. Upon arrival, crews found that the tractor-trailer, which had been struck by a south bound freight train, severed through the middle of the trailer, with the rear of the trailer on the east side of the tracks and the cab on the west side. The truck was a moving van, evidenced by the moving blankets and other items strewn along the tracks. The two-engine train was hauling 68 cars of molten sulfer, however there was only minor damage to the train, with no danger of release of any of the cargo. There were no injuries, and Florida Highway Patrol and CSX officials are on scene investigating. No additional information was available at press time. Train and truck collide in Oxford ...

PAGEA2SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, JULY3, 2014 and won 5-1. Conner Morgan pitched the whole game, said Coach Cinto Arredondo. On Friday, they played the championship game and again, it was against South Lake. This time, they took the win in a 10-0 shutout. They had four homeruns during that last game and the first two came in the first inning with two outs. The hits came back-toback, first with Shemar Lawson and then by Andy Ashley, Arredondo said. Later in the game, Conner Morgan hit a homerun and then Ashley struck again. Royce Arredondo pitched the whole game, shutting out South Lake.. He said the team has really come together during the last three games. Next up, Freeport and state the tournament is set to start on July 18. As they practice these next couple of weeks, theyll be focusing on defense, Arredondo said. Theyll also be focusing on earning the money to go to the state tournament. Parent and fundraising coordinator Landi Adams said the cost for their week in another community, especially Freeport is expensive. They estimate the week will cost $13,000 just in lodging that doesnt include anything additional even food. The hotel rooms costs $150 a night each and theyll be there a week If we go the distance and we say we are, Adams said with a smile in her voice. We stand a good chance. If they stay and win, then they would move on to the World Series. Along with the opportunity to be district and state champs, its a great learning experience for the players, according to Adams. The lessons include Teamwork, cooperation and social skills not just with their team but with other teams and adult coaches, she said, noting its a very positive experience. And it helps them to develop strong and healthy self-esteem. The team just began their fundraising efforts, but have several events planned, including a yard sale this weekend. Theyll be set up at Par-Gas in Bushnell on Saturday. Theyll follow up with a chicken and rice dinner, an enchilada dinner and a 50/50 raffle, but dont have dates on those yet. Adams quoted the boys as saying, We want to work for our money. They have a strong work ethic, these kids. They work hard, they practice hard, they play hard. Were blessed that they are really coming together as a team. Team members are: Zander Eastburn, Zachary Varnum, Andy Ashley, Conner Morgan, Cameron Ciulla, Jared Adams, Ty Parris, Royce Arredondo, Landon Adams, Hector Arredondo, Broc Valdez and Shemar Lawson. Coaches are Wendell Gill, Tom Valdez, Cinto Arredondo and Matt Morgan. POSTMASTER:SENDADDRESSCHANGESTO SUMTERCOUNTYTIMES. An overnight domestic hostage negotiation effort ended successfully last Thursday morning after a Bushnell man barricaded himself inside his home with a 7-year-old child. The incident began about 3:25 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, when Kevin Osborne, 44, reportedly got into a physical altercation with an elderly female family member at a residence on Parker Avenue, according to a sheriffs office report. Osborne grabbed the child from the home and forced him into his black Dodge pickup truck and fled. Deputies pursued the vehicle on County Road 48 and attempted to stop it, the report states. Osborne refused to stop and drove to his home on County Road 628 where he barricaded himself inside with the child, according to the report. He repeatedly made threats to take his life and the childs life. Throughout the night, deputies and members of the SWAT team and Hostage Negotiation team communicated with Osborne in an attempt to resolve the situation. At 10:51 a.m. on June 26, Osborne surrendered and released the child after being reassured by law enforcement, friends and family members, the report states. He was charged with false imprisonment, cruelty toward a child, battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated fleeing and eluding police with injury or damage. Osborne was placed in the Sumter County jail without bond. Police report Adamsville residents are planning a get together in a couple of weeks and its all about being neighborly. We have a neighborhood watch that we developed last year, said event coordinator Joyce Douglas. Their first meeting went really well and while they worried only five people would show up, about 75 attended, she said. Since then, theyve also started the Adamsville Community page and been working to really connect the community. While their page is on the Internet, Douglas notes that not everybody uses the web for information, so thats one of the reasons they decided to have the picnic. The hope is they can do more for their community and keep residents connected. The fun is slated for Saturday, July 19, and set to begin at noon at the corner of C.R. 508 and C.R. 513 in Adamsville. Therell be bounce house fun and visits from the Sumter County Sheriffs Office bloodhound, McGruff and Smokey the Bear. Theyll also be face painting and a chance to visit with neighbors. Residents will also be able to enjoy free hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks that are being provided by donations from coordinators, neighbors and local businesses, Douglas said. The community has been waiting a long time for this. Concerned that Adamsville has a bad name, she said, Its not a bad place. We want to regain our community and let every one know that Adamsville is a familyoriented community. And they also want to get the message out, that if you want to do bad things you need to find another neighborhood, because were not going to stand for it. Douglas is hoping the picnic will become an annual event. The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) awarded the Sumter County Board of County Commissioners the GFOAs Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2014 budget. The award reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the Sumter County Board of County Commissioners had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entitys budget serves as: a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device. Budget documents must be rated proficient in all four categories, and the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award. It is the second year that Sumter County Board of County Commissioners has received this prestigious award. The Government Finance Officers Association is a nonprofit professional association serving over 17,500 government finance professionals throughout North America. When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual or department designated as being primarily responsible for its having achieved the award. The award was presented to County Administrator Bradley Arnold on Tuesday, June 24, at the Colony Cottage Recreation Center, 510 Colony Blvd. (Parlor Room), The Villages. County gets budget award 000INR8 CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Early Childhood Education says that children learn through play. Teachers of young children, ages four to five, are allowing more free play rather than having children sit for a long time at a table. I, as a VPK teacher allow my children extra free play but walk around from center to center, interacting with each child, asking them what they are playing. I ask them about the color or shape of the toy, and the letter it starts with as well as the sound that letter makes. I have seen a big improvement in the childrens learning and behavior since I have incorporated, Children learn through play. PAGEA4SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, JULY3, 2014 The broken beautifulAfter the March 2011 tsunami in Japan that killed nearly 20,000 people, a woman named Sue Plumb Takamoto was out clearing debris in a field in the coastal city of Ishinomaki. As she picked among the ruins, her eyes kept catching sight of the colorful shards of broken pottery, the only remains of the citys tearooms and kitchens. She and her friends began gathering the shards and broken pieces and washed them. Eventually, Takamoto and her friends launched the Nozomi Project, a ministry of Be One, a network of house churches and missionaries in the Ishinomaki area. The Nozomi Project creates jobs for grandmothers and single moms of the area, most of whom lost loved ones, their livelihood and/or their homes in the tsunami. These women take the broken shards from the rice bowls and teacups that the enormous wall of water destroyed and fashion them into jewelry, which they sell through the Nozomi Website, www.nozomiproject.com. Each woman names her line of jewelry, often after a loved one who died in the disaster. The jewelry doesnt bring a lost loved one back, but it is bringing hope in the face of incredible grief and sorrow. (Nozomi in Japanese means hope.) Takamoto writes in Christianity Today, God can take broken pottery and broken women who think that life is over for themand we are in the midst of seeing God do amazing things. Thats always been the song sung throughout history we are in the midst of seeing God do amazing things. It started in the Garden when man first sinned and brought pain and suffering into the world, passing it down throughout the generations. He took the first step, offering forgiveness and redemption, even before man asked for it. I just now had an aha! moment the man, Adam, did not ask God for forgiveness first. God offered it first and Adam responded. Thousands of years later, the apostle John wrote, We love him, because he first loved us (1 John 4:19). Sometimes, maybe a lot of times, maybe many that we arent even aware of, God is already working out the unbeauty in our lives, taking the broken pieces and shards left over from the chaos and storms that seek to destroy us washing them and collecting them to fashion into something functional and beautiful. Sometimes, because God isnt limited to time and space, maybe hes already creating beauty from brokenness, maybe even before its broken. Like he has always known from before forever even began what will break and how he will redeem it and repurpose it, how he will work everything together ultimately for good for those who love him and are called according to his design and purpose (Romans 8:28). That doesnt make our pain any less painful, but it does give us nozomi. It does give us hope. The other day I heard someone on the radio say that Christian hope is fundamentally different from mere optimism. Christian hope locks its steely eyes on the devastation of the world around it and readily acknowledges that some things may not get better, he said. That things get better is not our ultimate hope anyway. They may or may not get better, and some, like losing a loved one in a violent storm, will always remain unchanged. Our hope, then, is that God promises his people that he will take all the broken pieces of our lives and create something new and lovely. He turns mourning into joy, sorrow into dancing, exchanges ashes for beauty, makes all things new. In my moments of darkness and doubt I have always reminded myself that our God is able to do immeasurably more than we could ever imagine, far more than we could ever dream, infinitely beyond that which we could ever dare to hope or pray for. I have never experienced devastation, but that doesnt mean one day I wont. On the way to church last week I heard a song, The Broken Beautiful. In it, Ellie Holcomb sings, Theres healing in your nameyou walked out of the grave, so your love can take broken things and make them beautiful. Perhaps thats the song the women of Ishinomaki sing, the song of hope and redemption, of healing and resurrection, of being broken by tragedy and made beautiful by grace. She can be reached at 352564-2927 or via email at nkennedy@chronicleonline.c om. Florida Move Over Act now protects utility vehicles Its called the Florida Move Over Act and it was enacted to help protect law enforcement and emergency vehicles stopped at emergency situations by having motorists move over into an inside lane when possible to provide more room between them and the vehicles. The law was enacted following some hits and close calls for emergency workers stopped at wrecks and other emergency by motorist coming too close. Well, the law has now been expanded. Utility crews are now protected by the Florida Move Over Act, as they work on the side of roads and highways. Effective July 1, the Act is amended to include utility service vehicles and sanitation vehicles to the list of public safety vehicles motorists must already slow down or move over for to protect personnel. The amended language was written by Florida Rep. Holly Raschein (R-Key Largo) and Sen. Greg Evers (R-Pensacola) and passed as part of a larger omnibus transportation package (HB 7005), spearheaded by Rep. Daniel Davis (R-Jacksonville). Under the new law, motorists are required to: Approach law enforcement patrol cars, emergency vehicles, utility service vehicles, sanitation vehicles, and tow trucks/wreckers with caution. Change lanes away from these vehicles if traveling on a multi-lane roadway and able to move over safely; or slow down to a speed that is 20 mph less than the posted speed limit, when a clearly identified emergency or work-crew vehicle is parked and crews are working. Violating the Move Over Act can result in a fine and points on your license. Working safely is extremely important in the electric utility industry, said Barry Moline, executive director. This new law will help Floridas electric utility workers restore power in emergencies and maintain high reliability both safely and efficiently. We appreciate Rep. Raschein, Rep. Davis, Sen. Evers and the Florida Legislature for passing this important legislation that will reduce accidents and save lives. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles offers more information on the law online at http://www.flhsmv.gov/safetytips/moveovertips.htm. This certification allows our citizen electorate to become experts in county government improving their communities, said FAC Executive Director Chris Holley. The 380 graduates of this program is a testament to the importance of this curriculum to Floridas public servants and our counties. The CCC program covers a variety of topics, such as county government roles andresponsibilities, county government structure and authority, financial management, ethics and Sunshine law, negotiation skills, economic development, and effective communication. PAGEA8SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, JULY3, 2014 FROM THE GROUND UP Question:My green beans are rubbery on the vine. What causes this?Answer:That is usually a sign that you waited a little too late to harvest. When you plant, be sure to know the approximate numbers of days from seed or transplanting until harvest and note it on a calendar. You can find that information in a UF/IFAS publication about vegetable gardening http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/vh021.Question:Can I plant angel trumpets in my front yard in Sumter County? Im concerned about the legal aspects.Answer:Really good question. Concerns are that the plant can be used as a hallucinogen; so it is illegal anywhere to cultivate it for that use. Maitland, Florida has a ban on its use even in the landscape. Sumter County has no restrictions on using Brugmansia (Angels Trumpet) in your landscape. However, Angels Trumpet is one of many plants that are highly poisonous; so you should be aware of this and take that into consideration if you have small children or pets that might ingest it.Question: My coleus, impatiens and petunias are not looking very well. We irrigate with reclaimed water. Could that be the problem?Answer:First, make sure they are in the right light and irrigated properly. Petunias, however, are usually done here by June anyway; they do not like the heat and the humidity at this time of year. You can plant them in September again. Reclaimed water does have some salt content and all 3 of those plants are not salt tolerant. Begonia, gaillardia, and zinnias are more salt tolerant. UF/IFAS has a great publication on gardening with annuals http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/mg319 and there is a chart listing the more salt-tolerant types. To submit questions to Ask the Master Gardener Plant Health Desk please call 352-793-2728, Ext. 229 or email us at plantclinic@aol.com. Summer Day Camps One of my favorite vegetables on the grill is sweet corn with rosemary butter! Florida is the largest producer in the U.S. Corn contains vitamin C and fiber. A large ear of sweet corn contains three grams of dietary fiber. Corn is low-fat, sodium and cholesterol-free and contains fiber. One ear of corn contains 20 percent of the recommended dietary allowance of vitamin C for children ages 1-8. Eating plenty of fruits and veggies like corn may help reduce the risk of many diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure and some cancers. Sweet corn is available as yellow, white or bicolored ear types. Corn can be prepared as cream style or whole kernel corn (cutting the corn off the cob), make it into chowder, boil or roast it, add it to salads or mix it with other veggies. What should you look for when shopping for corn? Sweet corn cobs should feel and look moist and plump, with the kernels inside fat and shiny. Always try to buy sweet corn with the husks still attached and look for green-colored husks. When preparing corn for cooking or preserving you can easily remove kernels from the cob by standing the corn on end on a cutting board and cut down the cob with a sharp knife. Corn can be cooked with or without the husks in a variety of ways, such as steaming, grilling or broiling. Corn should be steamed for five to seven minutes or try roasting and grilling for a smoky flavor. Salt can make corn tough, so only lightly salt the corn before cooking or to reduce sodium add different herbs such as rosemary, thyme, chives or garlic to your corn before cooking.Creamed Corn: Serves 6Ingredients: 3 cups sweet corn kernels (5 or 6 ears), divided cup low-fat milk, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, teaspoon salt. Directions: Place milk, cornstarch, salt and 2 cups of corn in a blender and blend until smooth. Transfer the puree to a medium saucepan and add the remaining 1 cup of corn. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture simmers and thickens and the corn is tender, about 5-7 minutes.Corn, Tomato, Avocado Salsa: Serves 8-10.Ingredients: 4 ears corn, roasted and kernels removed from the cob, 2 large tomatoes, diced, 1 large avocado, peeled, seeded and diced, cup red onion, finely chopped, cup bell pepper, finely chopped cup fresh cilantro, hand torn, 1 lime, juiced (plus more if desired), salt and pepper to Taste (or add a herb of your choice). Directions: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine all ingredients. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt, pepper and hot sauce. For more information on vegetables contact your local UF/IFAS Extension Office or Sumter County email mmaddox@ufl.edu for Martha Maddox, Family and Consumer Science Agent. SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, JULY3, 2014, PAGEA13 The cemetery association holds the event to raise funds for the upkeep and operation of the Linden Cemetery, where the event is held. But, there's more involved than just selling barbecue dinners and drinks. Community members take much pride in preparing and donating cakes and pies to be auctioned off. It's gotten to be a big thing, said Dale Akins, a Tarrytown resident. People get in bidding wars. This year, the auction also included items such as fresh home-grown peas and a hand-made braided cow whip made and donated by J. W. Outlaw. When the bidding was all done, 51 cakes had been auctioned for donations ranging from $30 to $500 each. The top bid went for a cake donated by Dora Rogers and purchased by the Mazak family. The hand made cow whip brought plenty of excitement to the auction. It finally went for a winning bid of $2,500, with the Mazak family again being the top bidder. There was so much competition for the cow whip that a bidder from a previous year also donated his Outlaw-crafted cow whip for a $1,000 donation to the association, Burry said. In another important tradition of the picnic, senior visitors were recognized as a group that had surpassed the 75-year or 90-year mark. This year, they were each treated with a copy of Carlisle's book, Ties That Bind II: More about the Linden Cemetery and the Linden Cemetery Picnic.
