All part of training drill If a tornado were to touch down in Sumter County, emergency workers are a little better prepared to deal with the emergency. Thats because last week, for two days May 20 and May 21 Sumter County Emergency Management hosted a MultiCasualty Incident (MCI) drill designed to exercise the countys recently revised plan to deal with those types of emergencies and provide responders with real-life training to better prepare for an MCI. The drill simulated a tornado touchdown in a residential area of Wildwood, causing overturned vehicles, damaged structures, and injured victims strewn about the area. Emergency response personnel from Sumter County Fire & EMS, Rural Metro Ambulance, Villages Public Safety Department, Sumter County Sheriffs Office, Air Care and ShandesCair responded to the incident. A total of 23 victims had to be located and triaged, moved to a treatment area, then transported to local hospitals. While all of the victims were either role players or mannequins, the responders treated them as actual casualties, providing rapid evaluation and treatment of each one. With widespread support, organizers and patrons came together last Thursday afternoon to participate in a fundraiser to benefit Bushnell City Clerk Joy Coleman as she battles melanoma cancer. City employees, family members and friends joined together to provide lunch meals with donations going toward helping to pay the medical bills for Colemans treatment. The concept for the fundraiser was created by her coworkers at Bushnell City Hall. In talking to Kirsten about her mom, I found out that insurance only paid for a limited number of visits for home health, and the drug Joy was taking was extremely expensive, said Susan Noell, city director of customer affairs. Not to mention driving constantly back and forth to Moffitt and mounting hospital bills. City staff decided they wanted to do something to help. Mike Eastburn, director of public works, and the Public Works Department volunteered to cook some chicken and rice dinners for sale to try and raise funds to help offset Colemans medical costs. City staff was going to sell tickets for the dinners. Once word got out, everyone came to City Hall to pickup tickets to sell! The response from the public was overwhelming! You know, I have always known that Sumter County comes to the aide of their own, Noell said. And I have seen first Tornado touchdown in Sumter? While all of the victims were either role players or mannequins, the responders treated them as actual casualties. With more than 1,600 members, a Facebook site called Save These Trees is growing not only in numbers but also in comments. At issue is the countys plan to resurface the road. The road project has created a clash between some local residents who want it stopped and county administration that wants the project continued as planned. But the sheer number of people who came out to help Joy, it touched each and every one of us here at the City. It was crazy how busy we were, and we couldn't keep the dinners coming quick enough! When all was said and done, more than 500 chicken and rice dinners were sold at a donation price of $7 a dinner. Noell said Eastburn and the Public Works Department should be considered heroes. They arrived at 4 a.m., along with Mayor Bil Spaude, and former city employee Ron Pitts, and picked chicken fresh that morning and prepared all the dinners. The City Council members donated items for the dinner, and Gary Long, owner of Beef O Brady's in Bushnell, donated all the containers and silverware. Evans Ace Hardware in Bushnell brought over bags to use to put the dinners in. Joys daughter Kirsten and her boyfriend, Tim Garemore, were on hand to help, and were able to speak with many people who came out to support Joy. Kirsten expressed eternal gratitude, on behalf of the family, to everyone who helped, and really wanted to let everyone know how much they love and appreciate them. To complete the resurfacing project, county plans include removing several large oak trees. It is the planned removal of those trees that is causing some Sumter residents to cry foul. The website is filled with comments of support for the trees and comments about their significance and importance to the area. For many of those posting, the trees are being seen as an important part of the countys heritage, filled with fond memories, environmental benefits and also a sense of community. Some of the comments voice concerns that the resurfacing project supports concerns of residents of The Villages and doesnt give equal concern to residents outside the retirement community. Tuesday night, county commissioners were scheduled to receive a petition signed by people who want the trees to be retained. A story will appear in next weeks edition of the Times about that meeting. Elder Options, mandated by the Federal Older Americans Act, exists to promote the independence, dignity, health, and well-being of our elder citizens; to plan, fund and administer a coordinated continuum of services; and to advocate for the needs of older Americans. Thanks for supportOn behalf of the family of Joy Coleman and her City of Bushnell family, we thank you for the outpouring of love and support! Joy is very special to us at the City, and we learned through our chicken dinner fund raiser how special she is to everyone else too! Kirsten, Timmy, Joy, Janette, and Nathaniel thank you from the bottom of their hearts for the outpouring of love, support, care and concern during her illness. Your dinner purchase and donations will help to ease the financial burden that cancer has placed on their lives. The family will be forever grateful. We are very thankful for your blessings, please keep the prayers coming.Preserve a county landmarkIt has been determined by the board of county commissioners that County Road 121 in the Lake Miona area is in desperate need of resurfacing. This resurfacing project will require the destruction of two very old and very large oak trees that divide the lanes of this beautiful and unique stretch of highway. The oaks were determined by the Florida Forestry Service to be approximately 116 and 126 years old. The persons who created the highway considered them important enough to preserve and this distinctive feature is a familiar landmark to longtime county residents. Many county residents, myself and my family included, feel the destruction of these trees isnt warranted and ask the commissioners to reconsider this action. County Administrator Bradley Arnold has replied to emails from opponents of this action, explaining that the trees make the roadway dangerous and the root systems of the trees are pushing up the pavement and destroying the road. I have lived here almost 45 years and I remember only two accidents on this stretch of highway that involved the oaks, and both were due to excessive speed. If my memory is correct, this should prove that this roadway (with the trees existing in the median) is probably safer than most roadways in the county when it comes to accidents per motorist per years the highway has existed. Does Sumter County Public Works keep statistics on the accidents that occur on county roads? If so, this should be a simple thing to check. If other counties and cities can engineer roadways with large, beautiful trees in medians or very near a roads edge, why cant this be done in this instance also? Surely there are ways to engineer roads that allow for natural intrusions such as tree roots. If others can accommodate nature, why cant Sumter County? It is an environmental disgrace to destroy trees that have existed for more than a century simply for the sake of convenience. The older of the two trees began to grow in 1888 when Grover Cleveland was president and the modern automobile was only two years old. They should both be earmarked for landmark status instead of destruction. Does County Road 121 need resurfacing? Yes, it has needed resurfacing for many years. Do the oak trees that divide the lanes need to be destroyed? No. It is up to our county commissioners to come up with a way to engineer this roadway while still maintaining the unique nature of this county landmark and the beautiful trees that adorn it. Jim Gibson WildwoodA Distraction?During his campaign to be president, Barack Obama told us he had the judgment to be Commander-in-Chief. He has told us that his judgment was to be; not in favor of invading Iraq and yet at the time we had not had another attack on our soil because of our actions. He said in his judgment the surge in Iraq would not work, but as we all know, it did. It is his judgment we should withdraw based on a time line without respect to the situation on the ground. This is not the judgment of a Commander-in-Chief but a political opportunist putting a finger in the wind. Barack Obama made a trip to the mideast, an obviously political trip; it was for no other reason than to try to establish his Commander-inChief credentials. Unfortunately for him this trip proved he is sorely lacking when it comes to those credentials. He did so when he failed in his judgment to visit the wounded soldiers while overseas. No matter how he spins it, he said that visiting those wounded soldiers would be a distraction. Visiting wounded soldiers a distraction, from what, from him? Keep in mind the press would not have been allowed, no cameras would be allowed, so again what distraction? The distraction would be the cameras would not be on him, it would not maximize his time in front of the cameras and the media. This demonstrates his lack of knowledge of the importance of the office he was trying to obtain. A true Commander-in-Chief would never miss the opportunity to visit with the men and women he has placed in harms way while executing the duty of a Commander-inChief. Failure to visit these injured troops at a time when our country and the world are dependent on our Armed Forces and their leadership by a Commanderin-Chief shows his overwhelming poor judgment and his lack of ability to lead those who protect us. Is it any wonder he failed to take action when he was advised of the situation at the VA when he took office. He did get in front of the camera as he has done so many times before to rant and rave and fain concern but do nothing. Im sure in his mind at the time it too was a distraction from his agendatransforming America! Phil Longo BushnellSharing a laughThe Lake-Sumter Chapter 662 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees celebrated their 56th Anniversary at the last meeting of this session on May 21, at the IHOP across from the Lake-Square Mall in Leesburg. The enthusiastic membership enjoyed our guest couple who practiced Laugh Yoga with us. It was well received by the members which led into the large sheet cake decorated in red, white and blue icing being enjoyed by all in celebration of our birthday. Plan on joining us next fall. Thank you, Michael Harris Webster Raising mine Ebenezer By NANCY KENNEDY Unlike the ancient Israelites, Im not in the habit of naming rocks. Not being judgmental, just never thought to do so. Apparently, the Philistines were set to slaughter the Israelites. Full-on assault, take no prisoners. If you recall from the story of David and Goliath, the Philistines were huge, mean and scary. So, when the Israelites heard about the upcoming attack, they went to their leader, Samuel, and begged him to ask God to save them. God answered with thunder so fierce that not only did it rattle the Philistines teeth, but it so confused them that they went in the wrong direction. The Israelites pursued them and, after a major smack down, took most of them out and sent the rest running (1 Samuel 7, paraphrase mine). To commemorate the victory, Samuel took a rock and named it Ebenezer, which means stone of help. Samuel said, Thus far the Lord has helped us. In other places in the Bible, people have taken stones and set them in places as memorials, visible reminders of something God had done for them. In AA, people who reach milestones in their sobriety, such as 90 days or six months without a drink, are often given a token. Some people carry these tokens in their pockets or wear them around their necks so they can see and touch them and remember that they were once and still are powerless except for God helping them. On a shelf on my bookcase at home I have three yet un-named rocks that I picked up on the beach in Mexico where my parents live. For many years I felt emotionally separated from my mom my fault, not hers. But after that visit a few years ago and ever since Ive sensed a difference in my soul, like God healed something. The rocks are just rocks, but theyre not. Theyre Ebenezers. Thus far the Lord has helped me. The hymn Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, written back in the 1700s, talks about Ebenezers. One verse goes: Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by thy help Im come; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood. In the world of Christianity, theres a movement to modernize hymns and a counter-movement to keep the archaic, old fashioned words like hither and raise mine Ebenezer. Some churches sing Here I raise to thee an altar in place of the raising Ebenezer line so modern people wont think it means lifting up a miniature Charles Dickens character, a tiny Scrooge in a top hat and black wool coat. But to omit Ebenezer is to omit something deeply wonderful. We raise and sing about our Ebenezers to remember all the ways God has been our help thus far. Just recently, I had a brief moment of doubt. I started thinking that maybe what I believe is a fairy tale and that my certainty is just delusion. Then I raised mine Ebenezer, or maybe God raised it for me, bringing to mind the days and years before I believed when I was nearly paralyzed with fear all the time, unable to sleep, certain that a B-52 bomber would crash through my bedroom window while I slept. I remembered the day I believed, May 30, 1978, and how it was the day God delivered me from crippling fear, how instantaneously, the B-52 bombers (we lived on an Air Force base at the time) were redirected away from my window, how my paralyzing fear and dread of death went away. It was nothing I had done. God had saved me. He had spared me. He had delivered me. All I had done was realize my powerlessness to save myself and cry out to him and he answered. In moments of doubt, in times of trouble, when I have nowhere else to turn, I raise mine Ebenezer and remember that Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God and that he, to rescue me from danger, interposed (intervened with) his precious blood. Thus far, the Lord has helped me, and he will continue to do so, because he is faithful.Nancy Kennedy is the author of Move Over, Victoria I Know the Real Secret, Girl on a Swing, and her latest book, Lipstick Grace. It cannot be reproduced or ob-served, which is required to prove a theory, and logic is missing. Scientists cannot get something to come from nothing. Many years ago people thought the world was flat; today there is still a Flat Earth Society that still believes it has not been proved that the world is round. But did you know that the Bible has several verses in it, written long before we knew that the earth was round, that state it is round? There are many solid reasons to believe that the earth was created by an intelligent designer. Test our reasons for believing in God as The Designer. Use your intelligence. Always examine everything carefully and hold fast to that which is good. Wahoo Baptist Church presents the teaching Creation of the World in our new series Essentials: What Christians Believe & Why We Believe It on June 1 taught by Pastor Paul Alonso. SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY29, 2014, PAGEA7 FROM THE GROUND UP Question:My azalea leaves are speckled white. Is this a pest or a disease?Answer:This can be either azalea lace bug damage or spider mite damage; the damage is similar. Your leaves have the typical black, shiny specks (frass) on the underside so your problem is the azalea lace bug. The adult is .1 long with transparent wings, so you are probably not going to see them. The nymphs are tiny also (.03 to.07) would appear as large black specks; with a loop or magnifier you can see that they are spiny. The nymphs feed from the underside of the leaf by poking a hole in the leaf and sucking out all the chlorophyll; hence, speckled leaves. Cultural control would be to properly irrigate and keep your plants healthy. There are also varieties with a good resistance to lace bugs; you can email us for a list. Few beneficial insects actually target this pest but green lacewings may help; if you are into only organic and biocontrol, you can get these via mail order. If 15% or more of the plant is damaged, UF recommends insecticidal soap which works very well. Follow instructions on the package and be sure to spray both the tops and bottoms of the leaves. And never spray in the heat of the day.Question:My azaleas are quite yellow. Is this a nutritional deficiency?Answer:Good diagnosis! Now lets figure out which nutritional deficiency. Your leaves are yellow but the veins are green. This would indicate an iron deficiency. This can be caused by planting the azalea in a soil with a pH above 6.0. The higher the pH, the less iron is available for the plant. It would be a good idea to do a soil test to determine the pH; azaleas prefer 4.5 to 6.0. They will be very healthy even in a very acidic soil of 3.5 to 4.5 but they will grow very slowly. If your soil doesnt have the proper pH, you have 2 options. You can move the plant to a suitable spot with a proper pH; or you can use foliar nutrient sprays. Foliar sprays will be a temporary fix if the soil pH isnt proper, so you will have to continue using them. Again, remember Right Plant, Right Place. Azaleas, gardenias and camellias are acidic-loving plants; so always soil test before you plant them. Note from Ask the Master Gardener: Soil pH tests can be done at our extension office; you can drop off samples (at least 1 cup of soil without roots or debris) at either of our Plant Clinics. The charge is $2 per sample. To submit questions to Ask the Master Gardener please call 352-793-2728, Ext. 229 or email us at plantclinic@aol.com. The Florida Conservation Corps Annual Report on the Project AmeriCorps Non-native plant Terminators (Project A.N.T.) program is now available. The report highlights the accomplishments of Project A.N.T.s 37 fulltime members, two half-time members and 2,273 volunteers in their fight against invasive exotic plant species across Florida state parks. Each full-time member committed to 1,700 hours and 11 months at a host state park, while half-time members committed to 900 hours and six months. They focused on the treatment and removal of various invasive exotic plants, including Brazilian pepper trees, cogon grass and Coral ardisia. Members also engaged local residents and park visitors on how they could play a role in keeping these habitat-damaging plants out of parks either through landscaping choices at home or by volunteering to remove invasive exotic plants currently infesting state parks. By the end of 2013, Project A.N.T. members collectively served a total of 74,026 hours, the equivalent of an eight year period. There is no shortage of enthusiasm and dedication for preserving Floridas state parks, said Donald Forgione, director of the Florida Park Service. Project A.N.T. has been able to harness this energy to fight off non-native plant life in Floridas state parks through physical treatment of effected areas and by getting local communities involved in the health of their state parks. To locate and treat invasive exotic plant infestations, the 2014 Project A.N.T. covered more than 10,180 acres of state park lands. More than 2,000 volunteers were recruited and coordinated by project members to aid in the treatment and removal of invasive exotic species. Since treatment alone will not win this battle, the members also talked with more than 12,000 community members and park visitors about this and other critical environmental issues. Additionally, more than 1,000 miles of park trails, approximately the same distance as half of the Appalachian Trail, were improved to help residents and visitors enjoy nature and support active lifestyles. Project A.N.T. is well underway for the 2014 calendar year. In February, 50 full-time members kicked off their 1,700 hour and 11 month commitment across more than 25 state parks in Florida. SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY29, 2014, PAGEA9 Webster Elementary School hosted their annual Young Authors Conference as the school year neared its close. Students and coordinator Joella Strickland were host to two guest speakers for the event, which was held on Thursday and Friday, May 8 and 9. The conference was also a celebration for the works the students created. Each of the students who participated, wrote and designed their very own book. They then hosted author Dow Kump and Dr. Len Lucero. Kump met with children on Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Lucero and his pet pig, Chris P Bacon, visited on Friday at 9 a.m. Kump has written two books, Secret Agent 44 and Project -00 and Lucero co-authored My Life so Far on the life of Chris as he gets around using a device that Lucero created for him. Chris was born without hind legs and they were also recently featured on a PBS program. Young Authors Conference coordinator Joella Strickland said the students didnt work from a theme, but rather, they were encouraged to write about whatever they wanted. Their books could be fiction, nonfiction or even poetry. Many students were inspired by family members, said Strickland, noting that many who wrote nonfiction chose their teachers or a book they had read as subject matter. I did notice that compared to previous years, more children wrote nonfiction books rather than fiction books. Strickland said she tells her students that nonfiction is about the real world and we live in the real world. She believes the more they read about real people, places and events, the more prepared they will be for the real world. This year, teachers at Webster Elementary School have stressed the importance of reading with a balance between nonfiction and fiction books. In my opinion, this had an effect on the students of Webster Elementary School and their writing. Out of 40 of her students, 30-percentof them wrote nonfiction. For example, young author Vartori Bellamys created a book titled Space. In the book, he provided facts about John F. Kennedys vision for America to be the first country to land on the moon. Strickland said when asked why he wrote a book about space, Vartori replied, I have always liked space, because it is extraordinary and interesting. Many students also wrote fiction books. Young author Michaela Cooley wrote a funny mystery book entitled, Who Gave Me This Valentine? Strickland said Cooley told her, Valentines Day is my favorite holiday and I love mysteries! When Cooley read her book aloud, the children laughed out loud. Then there was young author Jose Salto. Strickland said he wrote a hilarious book titled, The Best Pizza in the World. After reading his story, everyone was hungry for pizza, she said. As a writing teacher, I encourage my students to make me laugh, make me cry or make me get the chills! We want to read books by authors who can illicit an emotional response. As readers, we want to be immersed in the story or learn something new. My goal for the Young Authors Conference every year is for Webster Elementary School students to not only showcase their writing ability, but foster the love of writing, Strickland said. Fifth grade students at the Webster Elementary School Young Authors conference who created their own books were: Madglen McCall, Marisol Hernandez-Rojas, Mariah Cossin, Riley Preece, Gabriela Lancaster, Alex Evans, Julia Heijkoop and Omar Maya. All the young authors at Webster Elementary First grade students at the Webster Elementary School Young Authors conference who created their own books were: Rebecca Stephens, Annabelle Del Valle, Connor Plummer, Isaac Orozco, Brenden Ruiz, Aaron Molina, Wyatt Davis, Allissa Walters, Alynza McBride, Delia Strickland, Wyatt Foster. Fourth grade students at the Webster Elementary School Young Authors conference who created their own books were: Jacob Brown, Jaden Vandiver, Aubrie Leigh Persing, Gabby Nace, McKayla Phillips, Levi Warren, Jose Salto, Michaela Cooley, Anthony Turman and Vartori Bellamy. Kindergarten students at the Webster Elementary School Young Authors conference who created their own books were: Anna Dumas, Koltyn Furtado, Taylor Cook, Katie King, Ahtziri Alvarez, Felipe Alanis,Foley Kedzior, Hashim Rajkotwala, Betsy Deridder, Aiden McCarthy, Jada Medina-Iraheta, and Lillian Hernandez. Third grade students at the Webster Elementary School Young Authors conference who created their own books were: Kevin Bell, Chelsea Davis, Kyla Leppin, Jorge Salto, Lily Foster, Amber Christian, Michael Oudshoff, Savannah Stephens, Demeria Godfrey, Maribel Segura, Angelica Fontanez and Arion Oglesby. Dr. Len Lucero served as guest speaker at the Webster Elementary School Young Authors Conference, last month. He brought along Chris P. Bacon and home videos of Chris as a piglet. Lucero explained how he created a homemade device that Chris uses to compensate for his missing hind legs. Lucero built the original wheels using K-Nex toys. Dow Kump shared a presentation about his two books, as well as the writing process. He discussed character traits of the heroes of his stories. He also shared a video about making dreams in to reality and staying focused on goals. BRENDALOCKLEAR Staff Writer

G2Thursday, May 29, 2014SUMTERCOUNTYTIMES GRADUATION Seniors at Sumter County high schools made the big walk last Friday night, crossing over from high school students to graduates, as they shook hands, accepted their diplomas and turned tassels … all marking their journey into the future. Wildwood Middle High School was first up last Friday night, as the crowd gathered in the school gymnasium for the event. This years seniors were also the first eighth graders who began their middle school career on the high school campus. That was back when Wildwood Middle School was merged with Wildwood Middle High School. The 2014 seniors class theme is A journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step,Ž and the seniors marched in royal blue, with their honor students in white. The Wildwood Middle High School class valedictorian is Marcella Johnson. Salutatorian is Makayla Keller. The South Sumter High School Raiders of 2014 selected a white rose, dipped in red glitter as their class flower and their song? I Was Here.Ž South Sumter seniors marched with Sydney Mann as valedictorian and Elijah English as salutatorian. Their class motto is We hold memories of yesterday, we know the reality of today, and we have the hope of tomorrow.ŽWildwood/South Sumter 2014 graduation Best Wishes to all 2014 Sumter Graduates 000I3T1 I Challenge All Graduates To Remain Drug & Alcohol Free Throughout Their Coming Years.
