How about being named Honorary Bat Girl for 2014 and tossing out the first ball of the game, with Evan Longoria as your catcher? If you know local resident Connie Webb, you know thats exactly how she spent last Sunday. A big Rays fan, Connies daughter Katrina nominated her for the honor, which earned her a collection of goodies, including a hug from player Evan Longoria and a chance to throw out the first ball during the Mothers Day game. Katrina liked their page and she got the information and she submitted my name, Connie said. The decision for who became bat girl was based on a combination of things including an essay written when potential bat girls are nominated. According to the Rays website, fans from across the nation and in Canada share their inspirational stories, providing hope and motivation in the fight against breast cancer. The Honorary Bat Girl winners were selected by fan votes on HonoraryBatGirl.com along with feedback from a guest judging panel that included Longoria, Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves, Pablo Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants and country music singer Jason Aldean and MLB host and reporter Sam Ryan. Connie said they got the call about her being chosen as the bat girl on Tuesday, April 29. She was thrilled and she remembers thinking, I cant believe it, she said with a laugh. She should have had an inkling she might be chosen, days earlier. She said it was Good Friday when they sent her an email with paperwork for a BRENDALOCKLEAR Staff Writer Its Food Truck Night in Wildwood Wildwood will host a Family Food Truck Night on Friday, May 16, at Wildwood City Hall. background check, But I still never expected Connie, Katrina and friend Gail Cave had a girls weekend when the time came for her to take her bat and toss the ball. They spent the weekend at the Tradewinds and went to a Rays game, earlier in the weekend. On a funny side note, I got hit by a foul ball that night. I was hit in the leg, she said of their early game. Then yesterday was just a whirlwind, she said on Monday of her experience at the stadium on Sunday afternoon. Evan Longoria was, of course, my catcher. She received a jersey, a certificate and a pink Louisville Slugger bat that was engraved with Connie Momma C Webb, Tampa Bay Rays, 2014 Honorary Bat Girl. The bat also includes the pink ribbon in white, with a baseball slugger silhouette in pink. Connie said the experience was an honor. Prior to the game, they introduced me and they had my story up on the big screen. Then, when I was ready, I threw the ball and Evan Longoria came up and signed the ball and gave me a hug. The experience was overwhelming, said Katrina, adding it was once in a lifetime. Feeling her mom had been through so much, Katrina wrote the essay, (submissions were limited to 2,000 words), but said she kept it simple and to the point, not telling her mother at first. The essay talked about Connies battle and then her efforts to support Relay for Life. Connie and Katrina have definitely been paying it forward since Connies diagnosis. Theyve served on the Sumter Relay for Life ever since Katrina will actually take the chair position this year. Working with their Relay for Life family, the organization has raised more than $50,000 in recent years. Connie was diagnosed in 2009 with breast cancer, And a year to the day, I was diagnosed the second time but with a different strain, she said. She underwent chemotherapy and radiation with the first diagnosis and then chemo only for the second round. Shes been cancer free for four years. Katrina was involved back in 2005 in high school, Connie said of the Relay for Life. My biggest thing is, it wasnt just about me it was for all the women that have fought this journey and Im one of the future ones because Im still here. She said shes had good doctors and lots of prayer partners. I give all the glory to God. God is the one that was in control and hes the reason Im still here. According to the Rays website, many of the game-used Louisville Slugger pink bats from Mother's Day games (authenticated by MLB) will be auctioned exclusively on MLB.com to benefit the fight against breast cancer. The program was started in 2009 raise awareness of the "Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer" initiative. In five years, thousands of testimonials have been submitted and more than four million votes have been cast.SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY15, 2014, PAGEA3 ESTABLISHED1881(USPS#535-880)GIVEUSACALL NewsDepartment..............352-793-2161 Circulation..................1-888852-2340 RetailAdvertising....... ....... 352-793-2161 ClassifiedAdvertising..TollFree1-877-676-1403 Fax.......................... 352-793-1486 TheSumterCountyTimesispublishedThursdays, 52timesayear,forasubscriptionpriceof $25.00peryearinSumterCountyby:SUMTERCOUNTYTIMES204E.McCollumAve. Bushnell,Florida33513 Deadlines:Displayadvertising Proof.................... PAGEA4SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY15, 2014 Florida officers urge drivers to slow down, move over As National Police Week started the beginning of this week, law enforcement officers across the nation remember and honor our fallen heroes those officers who in the service of their communities have given the ultimate sacrifice are remembered. As Florida mourns the loss of Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Chelsea Richard, who lost her life barely a week ago in a deadly traffic crash on Interstate 75, the Florida State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Florida Highway Patrol, the Florida Police Chiefs Association, the Florida Police Benevolent Association and the Florida Sheriffs Association are designating June 2014 as Move Over Slow Down Save a Life month. The safety of the public and Floridas law enforcement officers traveling and working our highways, roads, streets and Interstates is paramount, this month and every month said James W. Preston, president of the Florida State Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police. The sheriffs realize the dangers law enforcement officers face every time they pull over a vehicle and they agree everyone has a civic duty to reduce this danger by complying with our traffic laws, said Steve Casey, Executive Director, Florida Sheriffs Association. In this regard, the sheriffs are proud to partner with the other state law enforcement agencies and associations to bring attention to this critical public safety issue via this campaign. All too often, our law enforcement officers are in grave danger when they are working Floridas roadways, and we support every effort to better educate the public about the Move Over law, said Springfield Police Chief Philip Thorne, president of the Florida Police Chiefs Association. Law enforcement officers who are working on Floridas roadways face great danger from distracted drivers. To better protect Floridas law enforcement officers, the statewide law enforcement organizations call upon all law enforcement officers in the state to actively educate the public and enforce the Move Over law throughout the state. Floridas Move Over law, FS. 316.126, requires drivers to: On a two-lane roadway, slow to a speed that is 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit; On a two-lane roadway, slow to five miles per hour if the speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less; and On an interstate or roadway with multiple lanes of travel in the same direction, you must vacate the lane closest to any emergency or law enforcement vehicle parked along the roadway as soon as it is safe to do so. If you are not able to safely move over, slow to a speed that is 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit unless directed otherwise by a law enforcement officer. As the summer travel season gets fully underway, please remember to slow down and move over for our public safety personnel working along our roadways. This simple act will save many lives. Thank you and be safe, said President John Rivera, Florida PBA. The Fraternal Order of Police and its partners calls upon all of Floridas active law enforcement officers to engage in a concentrated effort to increase public awareness and enforce the Move Over law. When it comes to the safety of law enforcement, it doesnt matter what badge we wear. We are in this together, said Javier Ortiz, President, Miami FOP Lodge 20. Failing to move over is a deadly choice, not only for you, but for those of us who are out protecting you, said Colonel David Brierton, director of the Florida Highway Patrol. We lost a hero on May 3rd, Trooper Chelsea Richard and her death was preventable. Be responsible; make the right choices, move-over, slow down. My pastor used to think I sit there because I want to hang on his every word until I told him that its because Im short, otherwise Id head for the back row. The problem with sitting in the front row is that when youre smack in the pastors line of vision its difficult to slink down in your seat to hide from God. As everyone knows, pastors have a direct hotline to God. Whenever someone in the congregation is straying, God whispers that persons name in the pastors ear so he can tailor his sermon to make the strayer squirm. I remember one sermon when my pastor asked, How many of you are satisfied with your level of spiritual maturity? Squirm, squirm. In light of that, how do you think God feels about you? Delighted? Disappointed? Mixed feelings? he asked. I knew the correct answer was delighted, but at that moment I didnt feel at all delight worthy. Actually, at that moment, despite my best efforts to look holy and pious and spiritually mature, I had been daydreaming about a shirt that was at home in a dye bath that I was hoping to get a certain shade of aquamarine to match a pair of pants that I had found on sale. On top of that, I hadnt touched my Bible in weeks other than to move it out of the way of my coffee cup. Plus, I had been watching a lot of TV, and not news or educational TV or anything uplifting, but the junky stuff that rots your brain and your soul and I couldnt wait to get home from church to watch the latest episode of Who the (Bleep) Did I Marry? Delight worthy? Hardly. It seems that I find myself returning to this same place again and again and again. I want God to be delighted in me, I want to be satisfied with my level of spiritual maturity I want to actually be spiritually mature. And I want new shoes. And pie. So, with all these competing thoughts in my head, I sat there in my front row pew spot in the pastors direct line of vision, squirming because I knew God was pointing me out, which made me try even harder to look as holy and sanctified on the outside as I could while on the inside trying to drum up Gods favor, all the while berating myself for not having my Bible with me so I could open it and at least pretend I was an object of Gods delight. Honestly, sometimes its exhausting being me. My pastor had asked, How do you think God feels about you? At that moment, and many moments since then, I figured he felt disgusted. As proof, just a few days before he had sent a plague upon me: an itchy rash on my chin and cheeks after trying a new peach tree and coconut facial scrub. Could locusts and gnats be far behind? A long time ago, the Apostle Paul scolded the Galatians (as he scolds us), accusing them of having a hex put on them. They had been gung ho believers in grace alone by faith alone in Christ alone until they started forgetting that what made them eligible for Gods delight was not what they did or did not do. It was not the rules they kept or the traditions they performed, but that God delights in his own simply because they trust in his Son. Paul wrote: How did your new life begin? Was it by working your heads off to please God? Or was it by responding to Gods Message to you? Are you going to continue this craziness? For only crazy people would think they could complete by their own efforts what was begun by God. If you werent smart enough or strong enough to begin it, how do you suppose you could perfect it? (Galatians 3:2-4 The Message) That passage always makes me laugh and always brings me back to the pastors question: How does God feel about me? If its as we sing: God has smiled on me; he has set me free. God has smiled on me; hes been good to me, then he delights in me, a daydreaming, junky-TV-watching, Bible-neglecting, spiritual slug. He delights in me. Not my sin, of course, but because of Jesus, he smiles on me. He smiles on you, too.Nancy Kennedy is the author of Move Over, Victoria I Know the Real Secret, Girl on a Swing, and her latest book, Lipstick Grace. She can be reached at 352564-2927, Monday through Thursday, or via email at nkennedy@chronicleonline.c om. Are you considered delight worthy? Nancy Kennedy Special to theTimes

We have all heard the empty complaints about it being too hard to understand. It really isnt. There are some simple instructions that can be easily learned. PAGEA6SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY15, 2014 CARON MARRIAGE/Courtesy to the TimesPictured are just some of the children and the supporters who came out for a day of fishing and fun at Richloam. No Child Left Indoors Seven-month-old Mason Marriage is shown with his first catch. Hes shown here with his dad Gary Marriage. This Whistlers Day was a fantastic event for the children. We had hundreds of fish caught, thanks to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Bass Center, said Florida Sportsman Quail Forever local chapter president and event coordinator Gary Marriage. We had over 5,000 fish stocked in the two ponds that were used for the fishing tournament. This year we had such a great time with all the kids some of the fish stories will go down in the history book. Marriage said he heard some of the children saying they had caught their first fish and others engaging in sibling challenges, just for fun. He noted that each year they enjoy listening to the kids as they experience the day outdoors at the Richloam hatchery ponds. The kids spend the morning catching fish in a derby, learn archery, hunting and a variety of other outdoor things, while interacting with representatives from state and local outdoor agencies, from FWC to sportsman organizations. Its a day for the entire family to come out for fun and was held this year on Saturday, April 26. The fun included prizes, like a first place prize of a two-person jon boat, lunch for the family and new life experiences. These children keep us motivated little things that make you want to get to work on next years Whistlers Day with a smile on our face. Marriage said their organization is grateful to all of the volunteers, sponsors, committee, Quail Forever and all the state agencies that made the event possible. Without the grateful support we have, this day of fun and education for the children would be impossible. All of fund raising that took place went right back into the community. Even the work was done by volunteers, rather than paid staff. Quail Forever is an organization comprised of more than 140,000 members across the county. This grassroots system of fundraising and project development allows our sponsors and volunteers to see direct results of their contributions. Quail Forever empowers our chapter with the responsibility to determine how 100 percent of the local raised funds will be spent. This all makes it possible to have a record breaking Whistler Day like this one. We received a call this past week and were told that this has set the new benchmark for others to shoot for, but they better not use it, because next year will be bigger and better than this years fun day, Marriage said. We hope to see you at our upcoming events and like always come on down join our committee sponsor the events and well make sure we give back to the communities. FLORIDA SPORTSMAN QUAIL FOREVER WHISTLERS DAY Mason Thornburg instructed children on proper safety when using a bow and arrow. Abel Rodriguez earned second place in the fishing derby. The women of Florida Sportsman Quail Forever were hard at work during the event. The day was all about getting outside and doing a little fishing and having a lot of fun. Cody Lovering of Lakeland earned first place in the derby. Hes shown here being congratulated by organization president Gary Marriage. Julianna Salvo, five, shows off her catch in the derby.

There were various levels of sponsors at the tournament, ranging from donations of $50 to $1,000. All sponsors had designated signage on the golf course and were recognized in local newspapers in a post-tournament ad. Sponsorship signs are an excellent way for local businesses to advertise their services, as well as, demonstrate their support for the students at South Sumter High School and Wildwood Middle High School, said Linda Winchester, golf tournament director and long-time Sumter County School Board member. The $50 registration included: the greens fee, a cart, breakfast in the clubhouse, and after playing the back nine, all golfers were treated to a Southern fish fry lunch with all the trimmings! Prizes were given for the Best Team Score in each flight. One lucky golfer, Billy Petty won a one-day Pontoon Boat rental, donated by Jim Veal of the Pana-Vista Lodge. Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive contests were also popular with golfers. Visualizing my shots helped improved my score, said Marc Johnson. While some teams appeared to be playing a more of a Texas Scramble rather than Round Robin style, a fun time was had by all! Mrs. Winchester organized another lightsout scholarship golf tournament, said Sumter District Schools Superintendent Rick Shirley. Her impact and follow-through is one of the many reasons why our students continue to be so successful, he added. Golf tournament Director and Sumter County School Board Member Linda Winchester says, There will be no mulligans today. Every stroke counts! Sumter School Board Members, Ken Jones and Linda Winchester cheering on golfers as the tournament begins. Golfers, Chris Huddleson and Marc Johnson celebrate a successful day with golf tournament Director, Linda Winchester. PAGEA12SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY15, 2014 FROM THE GROUND UP Question:Im new to the area and have several oak trees that were covered dead ferns that suddenly came back to life after the rain. What are these plants?Answer:Those are one of our beautiful and unusual native ferns; Pleopeltis polypodiodes, commonly called Resurrection Fern, is an epiphyte or air plant. It takes the quality of drought tolerance to a whole new level! During dry spells, it turns grayish brown and appears to have died. But when the rains begin, it turns a bright green and uncurls its fronds in a matter of hours. Literature from early pioneers and members of the Florida Seminole and Miccosukee tribes shows the fern was used in baths to treat insanity. Because of its unique qualities, these ferns were also taken into space on the Discovery shuttle in 1997 as part of the mission to better understand natural phenomena from space. If you have children or grandchildren, let them do an experiment by watering the ferns and watch them come back to life. So enjoy your miracle ferns! Question: In one of your seminars it was mentioned that you do not recommend using weed & feeds on your turfgrass. Why?Answer:There are several reasons. You cannot get an even coverage with a weed & feed product and it may not have the active ingredients to kill the particular weed you want to target. If the herbicide is spread near your ornamental plants or shrubs, it can damage the roots of these plants. The herbicides can run off during a rain and enter our water bodies which is extremely harmful to our aquatic animals and contributes to pollution of our water. UF/IFAS never recommends that your broadcast applications of pesticides unless warranted; and then we will be specific about what you should use. Always contact your local Extension Office before using any type of pesticides. It can save you frustration, money, time and its good for our environment!Question: Last year the blossom end of my tomatoes and peppers rotted. What can I do to prevent that from happening this year?Answer:Blossom end rot can be caused by a calcium deficiency in the soil, as well as inadequate soil moisture. Use of ammoniacal nitrogen can prohibit uptake of calcium also. You might want to do a full nutrients soil test that will show the calcium levels and what to do should they be too low. Come by the Extension Office and we can give you the materials to send your soil sample to the University of Florida; the test is $7. Foliar applications of calcium are not effective. Be sure that during hot, dry, windy weather you adequately irrigate your plants. And always fertilize properly. To submit questions to Ask the Master Gardener please call 352793-2728, Ext. 229 or email us at plantclinic@aol.com. Photo courtesy of Dan Culbert, UF/IFAS Okeechobee. The Florida Master Money Mentors (MMM) program has been added to the University of Florida/IFAS Extension Sumter County Family and Consumer program curriculum. What is the Florida Master Money Mentor Program all about? The Florida Master Money Mentor (FMMM) program is a coordinated referral network of volunteer mentors who provide basic personal finance coaching. University of Florida IFAS Extension serves to provide the infrastructure of this program throughout the state of Florida, thanks to a gift from Bank of America. What do mentors do? Mentors receive intensive training in basic money management, strategies for dealing with financial problems, credit and debt management, savings, mentoring techniques, and connecting to community resources. Following the training, each Sumter County volunteer will provide financial mentoring to individuals within one year of completion of training under the leadership of UF/IFAS Extension Sumter County, Family and Consumer Science Agent Martha Maddox. How can an individual be paired with a mentor? If anyone would like free one-on-one help organizing and taking control of their finances, they can contact their local County Extension Office to receive mentoring. In Sumter County call 352-793-2728 or Email, Martha Maddox, FCS Agent at mmaddox@ufl.edu for more information and to receive mentoring. A mentor will help you figure out where your money is going, create and maintain a spending plan, set goals, building and improving your credit and communicating with family members about money. The Family Financial Management Program with UF/IFAS Extension Sumter County addresses the fact everyone has to deal with money, whether its budgeting, buying insurance, planning for retirement, or saving to buy a house. The FCS program addresses the following resources that are designed to strengthen the capacity of Floridians to establish and maintain economic security. Specific emphases include helping youth, adults, and older adults to: better manage their resources through developing spending and savings plans; develop investment strategies; manage credit, reduce debt and pay bills on time; develop consumer competencies in the market place so they can evaluate alternatives and avoid frauds and scams; learn effective consumer skills and develop shopping skills; plan for financial security in retirement; evaluate alternative ways to transfer assets, develop an estate plan, prepare a will, and evaluate trust and beneficiary transfers; evaluate risk management strategies and develop strategies to reduce taxes; and read, understand, and compare insurance policies. FAMILY FEATURES Quite possibly the ultimate steak, the T-bone embodies the rich blend of varied beef flavors that steak lovers crave, from tender and mild to bold and beefy. On one side of the T-bone is the filet mignon. French for dainty fillet, the filet mignon is considered the most tender cut, with a mild beef flavor. On the other side of the T-bone is the strip loin or New York strip, a firm, robust steak that is naturally marbled and offers a bold taste. The bone itself also provides additional flavor in the cooking process. With this pairing of tastes, it is no surprise that the T-bone is considered to be the best of both worlds by steak connoisseurs. For more steak recipes, visit www.OmahaSteaks.com. Thick Steak, Bone-in Steak and Chop Cooking ChartCooking times are in minutes and based on fully-thawed steaks. Gas grill: Preheat grill to high, reduce to medium heat prior to cooking. Charcoal grill: Sear over red hot coals, finish over indirect heat. Ten Tips for Perfect Grilling 1.Clean and preheat your grill on high. 2.Lightly oil everything before you put it on the grill. This helps the searing process and prevents sticking. 3.Season your food before grilling. 4.Sear the outside of steaks when grilling. This really helps with the flavor and juiciness. 5.Use tongs or a spatula to turn your meat on the grill. Using a fork can damage the meat. 6.Cover your grill as much as possible during the grilling process. This helps to lock in the grilled flavor and will help prevent flare-ups. 7.Keep a spray bottle with water handy to douse any unexpected flare-ups. 8.Use the 60/40 grilling method. Grill for 60 percent of the time on the first side, then grill 40 percent of the time after you turn over the food. This will give you an evenly cooked product. 9.Place your cooked product on a clean plate. Never place cooked product on the plate you used to transport the raw product to the grill without thoroughly washing it first. 10.Allow your foods to rest for 5 minutes between cooking and eating. This will help them retain moisture when you cut into them. Sumter sports South Sumter launches football season Ah, Tis Spring. The birds are singing, the flowers are blooming, love is in the air and naturally, and a young mans fancy turns to football. The young men of South Sumter High School are out getting ready for the fall sport with contact drills and conditioning. The coaches are teaching the fundamentals and everyone lives with the Florida heat. South Sumter will play its Spring Classic game on Thursday, May 22 at Groveland South Lake starting at 7 p.m. There are 60 athletes on the team. Spring practice is always fun, said South Sumter High head football coach Inman Sherman. The weather is nice. Its always nice. Reece Kinley and Broughton Martin are trying for the quarterback spot. Kinley is a senior so he has the edge. Levi Sapp graduates this spring, opening up the job. The team will be expected to win their Class 5A-District 6 again and have a strong overall year. Last year, most of the district contests were blowouts. South Sumter will play a Kickoff Classic against Dunnellon. They will start off the regular season with a game against Wildwood High Many coaches like spring practices because they can actually teach their players fundamentals and train them for the fall. During the season, they are wrapped up in preparing for that next game. But its still Spring and the pressure is not on, yet. Come August, the pressure will be on. Seven years ago, Dottie came to the Humane Society/SPCA as a homeless 5 year old. It was evident that she needed extra attention to get her back to wellness. Dottie is a dachshund and although not show dog quality, she had become a super model with her new family and with the Humane Society/ SPCA, posing in pictures throughout the years. There are very special people who look beyond a worn or tattered exterior and see the hidden gem within. Joe and Betty Lynch are two of these very special people. After seeing Dottie on their website, Joe and I rushed over to meet Dottie at Petco, where the Humane Society/SPCA had their foster dogs, Betty remembers. It was love at first sight for the couple, who picked Dottie up and cuddled with her. The Lynches filled out an adoption application and a week later was notified that they could adopt Dottie. Betty recalls, I was playing golf when I got the call you got Dottie! I called my daughter in Texas and my son in Spain. The couple lived in Fort Lauderdale for over 15 years in a condo that didnt allow pets. When they moved to The Villages, they saw all the happy dogs riding around in golf carts with their families. They knew they wanted a dog too. Joe remembers, When the car arrived bringing Dottie to our home, Dottie ran up to our door and from that moment on, we knew she was thanking us for rescuing her. We personally feel that is the only way to get a dog to rescue one. Marion Major, Humane Society/SPCA volunteer foster mom, told the couple that Dottie slept in the bed with her. Of course that was no problem, since I thought all dogs slept in their owners bed, laughs Betty. When Dottie came home, Joe and I felt like new parents. When we go out, we cant wait to get home to Dottie Over the years, the Lynchs have sent many pictures of Dottie celebrating New Years Eve, Easter, Memorial Day, her birthday, Blessing of the Animals, and so many more. We dont know much of Dotties prior life, but since being adopted by the Lynchs her life has been truly wonderful. Dottie was an adult when Betty and Joe Lynch adopted her, and now she is a senior and has developed some health issues. But in the loving care of her family, Dottie gets all the medical attention she needs to keep her comfortable. It is difficult to watch our pets age, but remembering all the joy and love they have given us through the years, it is now our time to give back to them in their senior years. Joe and Betty Lynch are very special people who adopted a very special rescue dog. Together through lifes ups and downs, they will always be there for each other, a loyal and loving family.
