SECO meeting top prizes include pick-up truck and $1,500 in cashSumter Electric Cooperative (SECO) will conduct its Annual Meeting of the Membership on Saturday morning, March 29. The meeting will take place on the grounds of the co-ops headquarters compound in Sumterville. This year SECO marks its 76th Anniversary, said SECO CEO Jim Duncan. Our annual meeting is attended by many members from all across our service territory and is always a great event. I hope our members will accept my personal invitation to attend. Those attending the meeting will be treated to refreshments and entertainment featuring Margo Rochelle & Rodeo Drive. Under the Big Top, members will also see a wide range of displays showcasing new customer programs for 2014. Here they will also be given the knowledge they need to conserve energy and identify scams. Each registered member receives a gift and is eligible for the big raffle at the end of the business meeting. Top prizes include a refurbished Dodge Dakota, extended cab, 4x4 pick-up truck, one $1,500, one $1,000 and two $500 cash awards. There is also a host of other major prizes that will be given away during the drawing. Registration for the event begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning and continues until the business meeting starts at 10:30 a.m. The annual meeting is one of the things that distinguishes electric cooperatives from other types of utilities. Aside from having a lot of fun and learning more about their co-op, members get to interact one-on-one with the employees who work on their behalf all through the year, concluded Duncan. SECO is a memberowned, not-for-profit utility serving 185,000 members and their families in parts of Marion, Lake, Citrus, Sumter, Pasco, Hernando, and Levy counties. The developer of a natural gas pipeline late last month unveiled some major changes to the proposed project corridor through Sumter County. During an open house meeting Feb. 25, at the Wildwood Community Center, representatives of Sabal Trail Transmission, LLC, displayed maps and computer images of what the company has labeled the Gum Slough Alternative corridor for the proposed 36inch pipeline. The path through Sumter is part of a multi-billion dollar project to build a pipeline from northern Alabama to a distribution center south of Orlando. This is the third proposed route that Sabal Trail representatives have displayed during a series of open house meetings in the county. While other routes would take the pipeline along a south-easterly path west of Lake Panasoffkee, much of the Gum Slough Alternative passes between the lake and the Wildwood area. Most of the route is adjacent to an existing highcapacity electric transmission line. The latest changes would take the pipeline away from more populated areas, but still has potential impacts for a number of rural residents. In particular the south west portions of the Royal Community along County Road 231, the northern portions of the Wildwood Ranch community and some areas along County Road 702 near the Lake County line appear to potentially effected. John and Lucy Shoup were among the small group of property owners attending the open house. Their narrow parcel of land in Wildwood Ranch is about 200 feet south of the power line easement. They've had enough of rightof-way issues, the Shoups said. Their community was agitated a few years ago when there was planning for a second large power line on the easement. Receiving special honor Why Relay? Iwanted to get involved with a community event and Relay was always at the top of my list, said SECO employee and Relay team member Meagan Thurston. The American Cancer Society is a wonderful non-profit organization, trying to find a cure against a disease that claims millions of lives each year. Not to mention that my grandfather and my grandfather-in-law both have skin cancer. Cancer is something that runs in my family, as I am sure affects millions of other families as well. This seemed like a great cause to be a part of. With humor, she notes their team captain finagled me into being her cocaptain this year so I was destined to become inProposed gas pipeline path changes Thurston Sumter sheriffs Cpl. Alan Hamilton answered questions from the media Tuesday afternoon, recalling the January day that he and his wife, Angela, headed out for a spontaneous date. They planned to go to the movies and relax instead they ended up in the middle of a shooting incident, inside a dark movie theater. In the sheriffs headquarters Tuesday, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco presented Hamilton with a plaque of appreciation for his bravery and action during the incident. Hamilton also received words of praise from Sumter County Sheriff Bill Farmer. Going back to that afternoon, Nocco said as they listened on the radio, it sounded like it was a mass casualty situation the nightmare that they all train for. He learned there was an officer inside and wanted to be connected on the radio thats when he learned it was not a Pasco deputy. Nocco said Hamilton did what he was supposed to do. Its the bravery that was displayed thats whats expected, on or off duty. He stepped up and did what he had to do. Sumter sheriffs Lt. Bobby Caruthers said even though Nocco knew Hamilton is a private man he wanted to personally recognize him for his efforts that day. Remembering that afternoon, Hamilton said foul words were followed by a gunshot in the dark theater. Everything went into slow motion, said Sumter sheriffs Corporal Alan Hamilton, as he recalled that January afternoon when one man lay dying and another accused of shooting him in MARTINSTEELE Times Correspondent Please see GAS Page 2 See RELAY Page 2 BRENDA LOCKLEAR/Sumter County TimesAlan Hamilton was presented with an award for his bravery and efforts, while off-duty, in a Pasco County shooting case. PAGEA2SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MARCH13, 2014 Now, it appears that the gas pipeline project could take 25 to 50 feet along the north side of their tract for an easement, they said. They are concerned with possibly having it that close. They do have a lot of gas explosions, Lucy Shoup said. With any luck, maybe it'll just go away. In the meantime, they have consulted an attorney. Jeanne Tolle, a resident of the Center Hill area, also attended the meeting. She is concerned about safety and damage to her property including a drainage canal and numerous oak trees. It's not the same as taking right-of-way for a road, she said. A concrete road and a pipeline that can explode are not the same thing. Survey workers and the whole process are frustrating and interfering with her home-based work, Tolle said. I just want them to make up their mind. While many Sabal Trail representatives were on hand last week to answer property owners' questions, other meetings are coming up this month which will give property owners, residents and other individuals an opportunity to comment directly to representatives of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). That's the agency that permits these types of projects. There are the three FERC Scoping Meetings scheduled for locations near Sumter County. The first meeting is set for March 20, at the Kissimmee Civic Center, 201 Dakin Ave. The second is set for March 26, at the Rainbow Springs Country Club, 19330 Southwest 82nd Place Road, Dunnellon. The third meeting is set for March 27, at the Citrus Tower, 141 N HWY 27, Clermont. According to Sabal Trail's website, all meetings began at 6 p.m.. However, Sabal Trail representatives will be on hand from 5 p.m. To answer questions for the public. According to FERC's website, the upcoming Scoping Meetings are sponsored by FERC staff and give stakeholders effected property owners and others an opportunity to present information about sensitive environmental features of the project area and to suggest alternatives for evaluation. Information about Scoping Meetings, FERC and the permitting process are available at WWW.FERC.GOV. Information about these meetings can be found under their frequently asked questions (FAQS) link. There is a link to the schedule of all the Scoping Meetings for the Sabal Trail project on the company's website: WWW.SABALTRAILTRANSMISSI ON.COM. This site also has numerous links providing information about the pipeline construction process. Sabal Trail's website also contains links to maps of the proposed routes. As of Tuesday, the maps for Sumter County did not show the Gum Slough Alternative route. They showed an earlier proposed route. This is approximately the Gum Slough Alternative route: The route goes through Marion County, connecting with the Sumter County Line about 7 miles west of Interstate 75. It then goes west for about three miles before turning southeast along a large electric transmission corridor. The corridor passes through the intersection of County Roads 462 and 475 and through the intersection of County Road 231 and NW 87th Road near the Royal Community, then makes a jog to the east and south around the Interstate 75/State Road 44 interchange. The route then continues south east, crossing US 301 about three quarters of a mile below the Florida Turnpike. In Wildwood Ranch, north of County Road 468 in the Adamsville community, the line turns east, cutting across the upper end of County Road 511-A. It then runs easterly for a short distance before turning to the southeast, running somewhat parallel to the Florida Turnpike. The proposed route connects with a electric transmission line at the Lake County line and follows that south into Lake County below State Road 50. As in previous discussions, Sabal Trail representatives noted that proposed pipeline corridors are subject to change depending upon obstacles, environmental issues and other factors found during surveys of the route. It will likely be late 2015 or early 2016 before FERC will issue a permit for the project, said Andrea Grover, director of stakeholder outreach for Sabal Trail. GAS continued from Page 1 There are the three FERC Scoping Meetings scheduled for locations near Sumter County. The first meeting is set for March 20, at the Kissimmee Civic Center, 201 Dakin Ave. The second is set for March 26, at the Rainbow Springs Country Club, 19330 Southwest 82nd Place Road, Dunnellon. The third meeting is set for March 27, at the Citrus Tower, 141 N Hwy. 27, Clermont. CORRIDOR Sabal Trail Transmission, LLC, is studying a new possible corridor for a proposed 36-inch natural gas pipeline through Sumter County. Labeled the Gum Slough Alternative, the new corridor would place the pipeline further to the east in the county and would mostly run parallel to an existing right-of-way for a large electrical distribution line. This map shows the latest route in purple and an earlier proposed route in orange. Annual Bushnell/South Sumter reunion set The Annual Reunion for Bushnell and South Sumter High Chool graduates is planned for Friday, March 14 and will be held at Catfish Johnnys Restaurant. volved. Lisa (Perryman) is very persuasive! I relay with my companys team, SECO Energy. The members are our employees and their families. For this relay, my husband is getting involved with me, which is really nice. For Thurston, this Relay for Life overnight will be her first. I missed the last one because I was getting married! Although it will be a new experience, she said, I am already moved by the involvement that I have seen. Other teams, committee members and participants are so involved and enthusiastic about everything that goes on. Their dedication to this cause and the hard work that they put into everything they do is inspiring. For those who dont know what Relay for Life is all about, Thurston said she thinks its important to share. One thing that I have heard over and over again is people saying they dont want to get involved because they dont run. I think this is a very common misconception. The Relay is not just about the relay itself. It is an entire year of different events, gatherings, fundraisers, and other community service that really brings people together. The Relay part is kind of like the reward at the end of the long year, where you can really see what all of your hard work has done. Its more like a celebration and certainly not about just running. You dont even have to run! Each group member can take turns walking the track and there are so many other events taking place as well. Theresa Lynn Kendrick, 53, and her niece Brianna Michelle Kendrick, 20, were both arrested last Tuesday, March 4, and each charged with larceny. The women were arrested about 4 p.m. when store loss-prevention personnel confronted the women at the grocery entrance as they attempted to leave the store without paying for the goods, according to sheriffs Lt. Bobby Caruthers. Both women reportedly had their own carts as they shopped through the store. After they were done shopping, Theresa went to the front of the store where she found an empty register, Caruthers said. While Brianna kept a look out, Theresa started grabbing Walmart bags and putting the items in the bags. Store personnel stopped the women before they could leave the store and awaited the arrival of sheriffs deputies. The majority of the items taken were food goods including popcorn, snacks and ice cream, Caruthers said. Additionally, womens clothing and underwear and toys were recovered. The women reportedly admitted that they had no intention of paying for the items and additionally planned to cash in a $15 Walmart gift card. PAGEA4SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MARCH13, 2014 Sumter students sweep Regional Science Fair Sumter County students swept the Big Spring Regional Science Fair once again! The 2014 Science Fair brought out the best and brightest middle and high school students to discuss their research, experimental designs, and conclusions with a host of judges from a variety of professions. Sixty-one eager researchers from South Sumter Middle, South Sumter High, Wildwood Middle High, and The Villages Charter School brought 53 projects to the Florida National Guard Armory in Ocala on the morning of Feb. 20. The projects were placed in thirteen different categories ranging from Behavioral and Social Sciences to Engineering to Zoology. After two days of judging, the results proved to be very exciting for Sumter County participants! On the evening of Friday, Feb. 21, science fair participants attended the Awards Ceremony at the Marion Technical Institute. Of the 53 Sumter County projects competing in the 2014 Big Springs Regional Science Fair, 24 projects earned Blue Ribbons. Thirteen of those awards were in the senior division where high school students compete, and 11 were in the junior division for middle school students. In addition to place awards, students were judged for special awards. Many of these came with cash prizes, including the coveted Intel Computer Award of $200 which went to Shelby Smith of South Sumter High School. Sumter County students left the fair with over $1300 in cash prizes and a host of special opportunity awards which allow them to compete in other venues with most expenses paid, including the Orlando Science Center Challenge. Local businesses and agencies were great supporters of Sumter County students. The Wildwood Rotary Club gave eight $50 awards to deserving students, while The Lake and Sumter Chapter of the A.A.U.W. recognized five high school girls with $50 cash awards for their excellence in the pursuit of scientific understanding. The recipients were: Bailey Hutchinson, Christina Sanchez, Kendall Clark, and Madison ODonnell of South Sumter High and Rachel Russell of The Villages Charter School. Brite Leaf Citrus Nursery presented a $50 prize to the best agriculture project, which was awarded to Josie Sheppard of Wildwood Middle High School. American Cement graciously donated a cash prize of $250.00 to the Best in Show. This prize was awarded to Elijah English. Lastly, the Lake Sumter Human Resource Management Group donated four $25 awards to high school students. To reach the next level of competition, the first place projects were judged in a second round. Based on this final judging, a team was selected to compete at the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair to be held in April in Lakeland, Florida. The support from numerous individuals, organizations, and businesses is greatly appreciated. Whether judging, providing food, doing clerical activities, donating awards, or providing financial support for schoolbased science fairs, the support is equally appreciated! Additional supporters this year, included Suncoast Credit Union Foundation, CEMEX, the University of Florida Ambassador Group, and University of South Florida, and the School Boards of Sumter and Marion counties. a Pasco County movie theater. He recalled those seconds that it took not more than 30 from start to finish, he said. He was aware of some type of altercation, his wife bumping his arm to let him know, because she knows he was likely to intervene, he said. The words uttered were too foul and he didnt want to repeat them, he said. Then the gunshot. Others in the theater either headed away from the scene or toward the man who had been shot. Even with the gunfire, Hamilton said he didnt feel any fear. He got up and went over to assess the situation and subdue the suspect. A video, reportedly from the movie theater, appears to confirm what Hamilton said as the Sumter corporal calmly makes his way from his own seat to the man who allegedly did the shooting. My only fear was retaliation, Hamilton said, explaining that he didnt know who was with whom and who might retaliate for the shooting. You keep your head on a pivot, he said. This was the first time Hamilton commented to the press in a public forum, because I was between two people who lost their lives forever (the man shot and killed and the man accused of the shooting), noting that there was nothing to say. As for his actions, Im not a hero, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, he said, adding that folks should believe that everything happens for a reason. He said it was ironic that he and his wife ended up in the Wesley Chapel theater. Its common for them to share a spontaneous date and they decided to head to the movies that Monday, but they were going to Brownwood. They discussed where to go and finally he headed north to the Wildwood theater but then turned around and headed to Wesley Chapel, because he wanted to go to the bistro. Even their seating at the theater was a variation. Hamilton likes to sit on the higher levels of the theater, but he compromised with his wife and they sat more central and closer to the south wall. He was just a few seats away from incident. Today you can be a hero and tomorrow a zero, he said, citing that as a saying they share around the department. Hamilton was hailed as a hero immediately after the incident in the Cobb Theater. Cpl. Alan Hamilton, who was off duty at the time, did not hesitate. He went into the hot zone and subdued the subject, said Nocco, when the shooting occurred, weeks ago. He was a hero. Farmer echoed Noccos praise saying that Hamilton took the gun from the suspects hand and kept him seated until Pasco law enforcement arrived. It might have been worse than it was, Farmer said. Im proud of Deputy Hamilton for exercising good judgment and taking the gun. Farmer said Hamiltons efforts may have avoided more tragedy. It was a bad thing when you go to a movie and someone gets shot over texting. I cant fathom such a senseless taking of life. Hamilton has been employed with the sheriffs office since 2002 and said this is not the first time hes been involved in a situation when he was off duty. Hes given chase and apprehended suspects in off-duty hours, but hes never a shooting. A corporal in the patrol division, he has worked as a school resource officer, a detective and as a member of the sheriffs office Special Investigations Unit. The victim, Chad Oulson, 43, was shot in the chest during the altercation with retired Tampa police officer Curtis Reeves, 71. Reeves was sitting behind Oulson and his wife Nicole Oulson, according to a Pasco County sheriffs report. According to witnesses, Reeves confronted Oulson about texting during the movie previews and went to advise management, the report states. When Reeves returned, additional words were exchanged and Oulson turned and threw a bag of popcorn in Reeves face. Reeves reportedly then removed a handgun and shot Oulson in the chest. Witnesses said they did not see any punches thrown, but during an interview with authorities, Reeves reportedly advised that Oulson turned and stood up, striking him in the face with an unknown object. Reeves claims that he was in fear of being attacked and he removed the .380 pistol from his pants pocket and fired one round, striking the victim, according to the report.BEYOND SUMTER The Voice of Sumter County since 1881The editorial opinion expressed in the Sumter County Times is the opinion of the news staff of this newspaper.PublisherGerry Mulligan Regional Manager John Provost Editor Bob Reichman204 E. PAGEA10SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MARCH13, 2014 It was March 2 and the sound of machine gun fire had ripped through the air, earlier in the day. Military vehicles and transports were parked near the olive green tents with soldiers and weapons everywhere: American, British, German and Samantha Stern was right in the middle of it all, as her father worked to sell his wares. Leaving her parents behind, she crossed the World War II camp and headed towards the community fire pit in search of warmth and something other than sleep to occupy her thoughts. But when she arrived, the fire hadnt been lit and she sat shivering. It was so cold, she said, I was freezing. Thats when she met Lee Gordon. He was kind enough to come over and light a fire for her. They began to talk and by that evening, they even spent time at the USO show together. Samantha sings during the shows and said she kind of flirts her way through the crowd. While shes teasing when she sings, she wasnt really teasing with him, it was serious flirting, as she sang, The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, and Fever. Already taken with him, she said she kept hoping he would ask her to dance and she kept thinking, You can ask me to dance any minute now ... any second any second. But he never did. I danced with everyone but him, because he was the only I wasnt willing to ask. And he was too shy to ask. It sounds like the stuff a World War II romance might have been made of. And it would be, except this romance started decades later, in 2013 at the annual World War II reenactment, held at Dade Park in Bushnell. Samantha, from Titusville, is 19 and Lee, from Tampa, is 28. Her father was a vendor at reenactments, before he lost his battle with lung cancer, last September. The family owns G.I. Jills named for her mother. As they attended the events, there were times during the day that Samantha would take a nap. This time, she said she headed for the campfire and fate introduced her to Lee. She and Lee began chatting on Facebook, but she eventually told him her Facebook crashed, so they swapped numbers. Lee was right there too. Not long after they met, he was convinced hed just have to chase her, she said. Now, nearly a year later, they are engaged and planning to be married at the end of this month. Last Friday afternoon, she was going through her wedding notes. Will the wedding be WW II themed too? Absolutely, she said, with a smile in her voice, adding that several of the reenactors will be attending the wedding and taking part in full period attire. The two men who actually introduced her fianc to reenacting seven years ago, will serve as groomsmen. The date is set for March 29 a year and a day from the time they started seeing each other. The wedding will be at Valiant Air Command in Titusville a World War II hangar, filled with World War II planes. Well be ferried up in a C 47, she said. But it will be on the ground, not in the air. I dont fly, she added with a laugh. Even her bridal shower was themed. It was a 1940s tea party. I adore the fashions and glamour and the singing and musicals (Im making an attempt to make a career out of performing), and simply the history the constant learning about details. I find myself drawn more to learning about the home front and what the women did stateside to keep everything together how they learned to adapt, she said of reenacting. I love talking to the men and women who were involved. My father always stressed to always thank and talk to a veteran while we still have them around. She said its the people who draw her to reenacting. Samantha said Lee feels the history is interesting, but he also does the reenactments to honor the memory of the veterans who participated in that war and to help people to remember what those veterans did. She said its not uncommon for veterans to come up and thank them for teaching people about the era. I always say I serve our country, not by serving in the military, but by teaching about it. Its so close to my heart, because when she was a little girl, she and her father didnt share the close relationship they did once they began doing the reenactments together. He was a big, burly guy, she said, adding that during the past 10-plus years, as they began reenacting, I really got to know him. We got to learn all this history together and we got to teach all this history together. I really got to know my dad, she said, adding how very much she loved him. And I met the love of my life there, you know, she said. Sharing a love of reenacting and taking time out to relax, Gordon earned a bright red lipstick kiss on his cheek before Stern curled up in his embrace. Samantha Stern is shown here, dancing with her dad Skip, before he lost his battle with cancer. She said their time working the events brought them very close. The senior Stern died last September. Samantha Stern flirts her way through the crowds at USO shows for fun and show, but she wasnt teasing with Gordon on the night they met. They share a love for reenacting and plan to be married inside a World War II airplane hanger. Gordon and Stern are shown recreating the famous VJ Day kiss the image captured as a sailor grabbed a passing nurse for a kiss to celebrate Japans surrender in August of 1945.

PAGEA12SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MARCH13, 2014 FROM THE GROUND UP Question:I have the loveliest yellow-flowering tree in my yard. Can you tell me what is it?Answer:You have the beautiful Tecoma stans, also known as Yellow Elder. This shrub and small tree can be found throughout Central Florida and is easy to maintain. It is very adaptable to our Florida soils and needs full sun for maximum blooms. This hardy plant can survive on rainfall alone once established. Yellow Elder should be fertilized in February or March and again in October or November. The flowers are trumpet-shaped, yellow clusters. Blooms occur in spring and fall and butterflies love them.Question:My elephant ear plants look wilted with the edges of the leaves dried and brown. Why is this happening?Answer:Elephant Ears require little attention once established but in colder temperatures and windy conditions, the tender leaves can suffer wind damage, which is likely what happened to your plants. Freezing temperatures can kill the foliage but it usually comes back as the temperature warms. These lush, tropical-looking plants tend do best in rich, moisture-retentive soil with sun to partial-shade locations. Be aware that one type of Elephant Ear (Wild Taro Colocasia esculenta) is considered invasive so it is best to limit it in the landscape or plant only in containers. Plant specific cultivars that are not invasive, which includes Hilo Beauty and Lime Zinger. However, even the non-invasive Elephant Ears should never be planted in or near a natural waterway as they can spread rampantly and become a problem.Question:How can I get rid of the fire ants and mounds in my grass & along my sidewalk? Answer:Fire ants are certainly plentiful in Florida and can be a medical threat to people and pets. Treat areas that are potential hazards and frequently used by people and pets. Fire ants can forage more than 100 feet from their mounds so its important to treat their mounds and surrounding areas with either a dust, granular, or aerosol product formulated for fire ant control. Broadcast baits should be applied in spring and fall. Its important to apply several feet around the mound itself. Whatever method you choose, carefully read and follow application instructions as several treatments may be needed to rid your areas of ants and their mounds. Editors note: This column is a continuation from last week.Basil is very versatile and can be used in a variety of dishes. Basil is added to soups, stews and sauces at the beginning of cooking, in other dishes add the basil the last 5 to 10 minutes of cooking time to accent the flavor. All parts of the basil plant have a culinary use, the flowers can be used as garnishes or cooking, the leaves should be crushed or minced to extract the oils before sprinkling over or rubbing into foods and the stems along with a handful of leaves can be added to coal when grilling the last 10 minutes of cooking. Other herbs that can be used with basil are garlic, marjoram, mustard, oregano, paprika, parsley, rosemary, sage and thyme. Meats seasoned with basil include: roast beef, lamb chops, veal, turkey, fish, shrimp and chicken. Vegetables to accent with basil are: tomatoes, peas, eggplant, spinach, zucchini, squash and corn. Desserts, side dishes and beverages enhanced with basil include: grilled fruit, fruit salads, pesto, cheeses, ice cream, cakes, potato salads, rice, stuffing, salads, scramble eggs, omelets, teas, and lemonade. One of my favorite recipes using basil is Basic Basil Pesto and Basil Cinnamon Peaches. I hope you and your family enjoy these as much as my family does. BASIC BASIL PESTO recipe makes about 1 cup and takes 20 minutes to prepare. Ingredients include: 2 cups packed fresh basil leaves, (2-3 bunches), 1/4 cup walnut pieces, toasted (see Tip), 1/4 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 2 tablespoons water, 1 large clove garlic, quartered 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper. Preparation: Place basil, walnuts, Parmigiano-Reggiano, oil, water, garlic and pepper in a food processor; pulse a few times, then process until fairly smooth, or to the desired consistency, scraping down the sides occasionally. Tip: To toast walnuts: Spread on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees F, stirring occasionally, until fragrant and lightly browned, 7 to 9 minutes. Martha Maddox Extension OfficeDade Battlefield, 7200 C.R. 603, Bushnell The monthly Alpha Delta Kappa meeting of Delta Gamma met at South Sumter High School on Monday, Feb. 24, at 5:30 p.m. Those in attendance were Kay Wall, Joyce White, Dottie Harris, Viki Ferrell, Nancy Rogers, Betty Weaver, Linda Mims, Carolyn Stephens, Jackie Peterson, Susan Vergnani, Josephine Simons, Betty Caruthers, Patty Rickles, and Sue Miller. The hostesses for the meeting were Jackie Peterson, Patty Rickles, Jo Simons, and Sandra Bryan. President Weaver announced that the state convention will be held at the Palm Beach Gardens on May 2-4. The next district meeting will be March 29 at Catfish Johnnys in Lake Panasoffkee. The district executive meeting was Thursday, Feb. 27, at the home of Sue Miller. The nominating committee is working now to secure officers for the next biennium. Patty Rickles, the fraternity education chairman, presented possible altruistic ideas for chapter members to follow. Pictures are now due for the state scrapbook. The program was presented by Trisha Revels Heijkoop on dairy farming in Sumter County. Mrs. Heijkoop lives and works on the Milk-A-Way Dairy Farm which supports 600 cows. Her farm belongs to the Florida Dairy Farmers organization that supplies milk to Publix, SaveA-Lot, and Gustafson Milk. Her presentation was quite informative. About 86% of Floridaproduced milk is sold as drinking milk. Florida has nearly 130 active dairy farms, each milking an average of 938 cows. Lafayette and Okeechobee Counties are Floridas leading dairy counties. The next meeting will be March 24, at the home of Sue Miller and the program will be a Pampered Chef party. The line forms long before the doors open, as folks come in search of everything from an unexpected bargain to some cherished item. The event includes a fellowship hall filled with goodies for sale, as well as a pancake breakfast and chicken and rice lunch. Member Charlotte Henderson serves as the chairperson, but said her job is the easy one. Its like somebody throwing the ball out at a game the game goes on. A committee does the work one person coordinates the chicken and rice lunch, one the pancake breakfast and another layout. There are many, many people that come together, she said, noting its a church membership effort, including the winter residents who join right in. Its just a blessing, the way they participate. As for the day, Henderson said they money they raised is for the general church fund and It was very successful. They wrapped up at about 2:30 p.m. and as in past years, they passed on any saleable items left to The Refuge at Jumper Creek. The Refuge holds a sale monthly, so if you think you might have missed something at the church sale and are hoping it wasnt sold, you might want to visit the next Refuge sale. Leroy Maroon, Fred Hayes, Tom Peterson and Don Parker were the muscle for the event, lifting and loading for buyers. Charlotte Henderson (left) is shown waiting on buyers at the sale. PAGEA14SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MARCH13, 2014 Out of Reach Rainbows are often depicted with a pot of gold at the end. If you have ever tried to follow a rainbow in the sky, however, you know that it is impossible to find the end. Thats because rainbows are simply reflections of the suns rays in raindrops. The ends of a rainbow may look like they are on earth, but theyre really not. This may be one of the reasons leprechauns are known to hide their gold at the end of a rainbow. According to an Irish legend, any leprechaun caught by a human must tell where they have hidden their pot of gold. As long as they have put their gold at the end of a rainbow, which humans cannot find, their gold will be safe! COLORING PICTURE COLORING PICTURE Fact or Fiction? PAGEA18SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MARCH13, 2014 0006BWVTO ADVERTISE ON THIS PAGECALL MIKE CALL MIKE 352-793-2161 352-793-2161 Rascal may be gone but shes in our hearts forever Seventeen years ago, a hairy little puppy ran out of the woods and into the street in front of Ronnies truck. Ronnie swerved, avoiding hitting the pup, and then stopped to pick her up. She was an adorable little wire hair terrier mix that Ronnie named Rascal. Rascal lived up to her name, with her high energy antics. For years I would hear the doggie door flapping all through the night, Rascal running in and out (into the back yard) burning off that energy. Always looking for something interesting to do and easily distracted, she was never interested in slowing down for her meals. Consequently, I battled for years to have her finish her food. Later on in life when her pace became more normal, she would come prancing merrily in for her meals, flipping her head side to side with a big smile on her hairy face, looking like a little werewolf! She always made me laugh! She taught me how much fun it was living with a terrier. Rascals wild hair and adorable face earned her the nickname funny face. She was lively and expressive, intelligent and loyal. And, as is common in must terriers, she had a feisty attitude and sometimes enjoyed a spirited argument that we were always careful to stay vigilant of. Rascals true love in our home was our other dog Teddy. They adored each other and were inseparable until Teddy passed away from cancer. Rascal mourned Teddys death for four months, and I thought at that time we would lose her too. The years passed and life was good. Rascal enjoyed hanging out on the back porch and chasing squirrels. She traveled around the country with us in our RV. And for many years, she accompanied us on our monthly trips to North Carolina where she loved going for walks in the fresh mountain air. But the years catch up to all of us, and at 15 years old, traveling became hard on her. So when we had to leave, she relaxed here in Bushnell with my brother. For two more years she would still enjoy life, only at a slower pace. Seventeen years is an old age for a dog, and I kept praying that she would just pass away peacefully in her sleep. Her legs were giving out, and she was constantly falling. For several months, I would get up throughout the night and help her outside to potty. And then, this past weekend, I came home and she no longer could get up from her fall. We drove Rascal that night to the emergency veterinary clinic. Sitting in the back with her head resting in my lap, I held her and pet her, telling her what a good doggie she has been and soon she would be with Teddy again. We brought her bed into the clinic room, and there she lay, snoring in my arms, peacefully asleep while I continued to pet her and tell her how much I loved her, and she will always be in my heart. She never woke when the needle was put in her leg. She passed away peacefully in her sleep, just as I had prayed for. But this way was better, because I held her in my arms till the end.Critter chatter Linda Graves Florida DART Rascal was 17 years old. Fish Are Biting! Best Tackle Selection on the Lake! The South Sumter Middle School Chorus earned some top honors at the District 5 Florida Vocal Association Music Performance Assessment. The group came home with an excellent ranking, after performing two beautiful pieces of music for four high school and middle school adjudicators, according to chorus and band director Corey Lowery. The competition was held on Friday, Feb. 28, at the First Baptist Church of Inverness. Every year, the chorus prepares two pieces of music to be adjudicated on. This year they received excellent ratings on their stage performance. The students must also sight read two pieces of music they have never seen before and are assessed on their musical reading skills. They received superior ratings in this category, which is the highest score a chorus can receive. Chorus wasnt the only group to earn recognition Meghan Miller and Karrah Christensen earned superior ratings at the Florida Bandmaster Association Solo and Ensemble event. The challenge was held on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Tavares High School. Christensen also earned a superior rating at the Florida Vocal Association Solo and Ensemble event earlier in the month at Westport High School. These two musicians practiced really hard to earn top ratings at this event, Lowery said. He expressed congratulations to both the choral group and the band students. They will be performing on Thursday, March 20, at the Annual All County Music performance, along with all the other choruses in the Sumter County school district. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. at South Sumter High School and is open to the public and free of charge.SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, MARCH13, 2014, PAGEA19 SAR003086TO PLACE A CLASSIFIED AD, CALL TOLL FREE 1-877-676-1403 MONDAY-FRIDAY 8:00 AM-5 PM (DEADLINE 11:00 AM TUESDAY) CLASSIFIEDSCANCELLATIONSAdvertisements may be canceled as soon as results are obtained. PET OF WEEK Seven Rivers Christian Delaney Byers struck out eight and held Wildwood Highs softball team to four hits as the Warriors beat the Wildcats 14-3 in five innings. Wildwood is now 1-7 for the season. Seven Rivers is 6-2. Seven Rivers took advantage of three Wildcat errors. The hostesses scored seven runs in the first inning as Byers, Alex King and Alyson Phillips all drove in two-runs with singles. King later hit a two-run home run, drove in five runs and was 3-for-4 for the game. Seven Rivers had six hits and took advantage of 10 walks. Passion Mills was the losing pitcher. The Wildcats used two triples to score two runs. Katie Henderson blasted a triple in the fourth inning and scored on Toni Zitos groundout. Myeshia Corbin hammered another three-bagger to score Ashtin Ingram in the fifth inning. Corbin scored on a wild pitch. Byers impressed both coaches. She did a good job, said Seven Rivers coach Gary Dreyer. She mixed up her pitches pretty well. Im not sure that Wildwood will play like that all the time. You do your best to take advantage of the other teams errors. Shes (Byers) pretty good, said Wildwood coach Adam Cardona. She was around the plate a lot tonight. We didnt do a very good job in the beginning of the game, hitting a lot of pitches. At the end, we started figuring her out. She did her job tonight. We havent been playing as well as we are capable of playing. Hopefully, this is a wake-up call. The second half season starts after Spring Break. Wildwood will play Crescent City at home on March 21 in a district contest.
