Gettin'a good paddling

"" 'Big Fish' up next

The kayak trip drew many participants to Lake Panasoffkee and provided a chance to enjoy company,
meet new friends and experience beautiful landscape. Shown here, the Paddle Party participants
prepare to launch at Marsh Bend Park.

BRENDA LOCKLEAR
Staff Writer

The Paddle Party may
not have sparked your de-
sire to slide into a kayak
and head to the Gulf of
Mexico, but for local busi-
ness in the area, it's one
of several different events
designed to promote the
Lake Panasoffkee and
Sumter County area, ac-
cording to event coordi-
nator and Tangent Media
representative Christy
Smiley
The paddling event last
month was part of a "Pad-
dle Florida" six-day jour-
ney to the Gulf of Mexico,
is one of at least four
events the company has
been hired to create in
their efforts to promote
the area, she said.
Throughout the day,
more than 100 people
were on site at Marsh

Outlet Bend Park for the
Paddle Florida event.
The participants hailed
from as far away as Michi-
gan and Alabama, Smiley
said.
Live music was per-
formed by "Trigger City"
of Tampa and the crowd
was welcomed to settle in
on hay bales or join in
games of volleyball and
horseshoes.
Pulling visitors into the
area, it was a chance for
Lake Panasoffkee to be
seen and an opportunity
for local craftspeople and
artists, as well as food
vendors to set up.

Two drivers die in separate crashes

BOB REICHMAN
Editor

Two people died last week
in similar but separate vehicle
crashes in Sumter County.
The first fatality happened
on Feb. 25 when a Bushnell
woman died from injuries she
sustained in a single-vehicle
wreck.
Shelia Stevens King, 69,
died after being airlifted to
Bayonet Point Regional Med-
ical Center in Pasco County,

The first wreck happened on Feb. 25 killing a Bushnell

woman. The second wreck happened on Feb. 26.

according to a Florida High-
way Patrol report.
The accident happened at
4:51 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25,
as the 2000 Ford Expedition
that King was driving was
traveling southbound on C.R.
623, a little more than a mile
south of C.R. 476, the report
states.

For an unknown reason,
King lost control of the vehicle
while traversing a curve and
left the roadway on the west
shoulder and struck a barbed
wire fence and then a tree, ac-
cording to the report. Upon
impact, the vehicle over-
turned and came to rest on its
roof.

King was airlifted to the
hospital but died overnight
from injuries sustained in the
crash.
She was wearing a seatbelt.
The second wreck hap-
pened on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
The wreck occurred at 10:20
a.m. when Nolan Martinson,
23, of Orlando, was traveling

eastbound on State Road 50
approaching County Road 757,
according to a Florida High-
way Patrol report.
Martinson failed to negoti-
ate a curve in the roadway and
traveled onto the north side of
S.R. 50 colliding with a fence
and then a tree, the report
states.
After impact, the 2009 Pon-
tiac G6 he was driving erupted
in flames.
Martinson died at the scene
of the crash.

Suspect keeps officers on 12-hour search

BOB REICHMAN
Editor

A Dade City man kept
law enforcement officers
busy for about 12 hours
last week as they
searched for him through
portions of South Sumter
with multiple officers,
bloodhounds and a heli-
copter
At the end of the or-
deal, Herbert Haley
Boltin, 37, was finally ar-
rested when he was dis-
covered asleep in a
greenhouse near the Gant
Lake Boat Ramp off
County Road 478A, ac-
cording to a sheriff's of-
fice report.
The search started

about 10 a.m. on
Tuesday, Feb.
25, when Boltin
was reportedly
wanted for flee-
ing from Her-
nando County
authorities in a i
gold van east- k
bound on State
Road 50 into
Sumter County,
according to a
sheriff's office Herbel
report.
Boltin was
wanted in Dixie County
for violation of commu-
nity control and resisting
an officer with violence.
A sheriff's officer spot-
ted the van at a residence
on S.R. 50 and stopped to
inquire, the report states.

rt Boltin

The owner of
the home said
Boltin came to
the front door
asking to use
the phone say-
ing that he was
in trouble.
After making
several calls,
Boltin asked the
homeowner if
he could "hide
out in the house
until someone
arrived to pick

him up," according to the
report.
When the homeowner
declined, Boltin fled from
the home reportedly ad-
vising the homeowner
that "you never saw me
here."

With a manhunt in full
force, the sheriff's office
responded to a complaint
about 10 p.m. that night of
a suspicious person.
The caller said a man
was sleeping in a struc-
ture commonly referred
to as a "hot house" near
the intersection of County
Road 783 and County
Road 478A., according to
the report.
Inside the structure,
Boltin was discovered
sleeping on the ground
wrapped in a blanket, the
report states. He was ar-
rested and placed in the
Sumter County jail.
He was arrested on
charges of fleeing and
eluding, resisting arrest
and violating probation.

Program nets 1,500

pounds of drugs

All you have to do is look at the staggering weight to-
tals for unwanted or unneeded prescription drugs
that were turned in for disposal this past weekend
to realize that Project Medicine Cabinet is a beneficial
program throughout Sumter County.
This year, about 1,500 pounds of prescription drugs were
collected at the two drop-off locations in the county, one in
The Villages and the other in Bushnell.
The majority of the poundage, more than 1,200 pounds,
came from The Villages not a surprise considering its
size and the fact that it's a sprawling retirement commu-
nity
But the south end of the county still had a substantial
amount, weighing in with about 220 pounds of prescription
medications.
The event was held in partnership by the Sumter County
Sheriff's Office along with The Villages Fire Rescue and
Sumter County Fire & EMS.
Every year, the amount of unwanted drugs climbs in
Sumter County and organizers see that as a real benefit be-
cause it means the materials will be disposed of correctly
By collecting the unwanted or unneeded substances, it
saves them from being improperly disposed of and risking
the chance of them getting into water systems or getting
into the hands of children or persons who might abuse
them.
All the collected material was disposed of by incinera-
tion outside of the county.

City pride?
I love living near the city
of Bushnell, but I do have
one complaint. There are
many empty stores and store
lots in the city which are
eyesores. Where is the city's
pride?
There are also residences
that look like slums.
The City of Bushnell
needs to enforce their codes
to insure that property own-
ers keep their property
clean and free of debris.
I want to be able to be
proud of the fact that I live
near Bushnell, not ashamed.

Prepped and ready for Lent

Nancy
Kennedy

Special to the
Times

;j.,

hese past few weeks I
have been diligently
preparing for Lent
How, you ask?
Well, two weeks ago I found
a pair of stone-colored flats
online at 30 percent off and
bought them. And today I
bought a pair of white pants
that were on sale (plus I used
a $10 off coupon).
Even though it's only early
March and I have several or
five pairs of white pants in my
closet, they are all Capri-
length and these are ankle-
length, which is more suited
to this time of year, or so I am
telling myself
I call this my Lenten prepa-
ration because for the past
few years I've given up recre-
ational shopping for the 40
days between Ash Wednesday
and Easter.
To prepare effectively, I
want to make sure I get all my
shopping obsession out of my
system before Lent begins.
Once, when I was 19 or so, I
decided to go on a diet, but
my mom had given me a box
of Twinkies. I postponed my
diet date one day and ate the
whole box of Twinkies in one
sitting.
I'm not proud of that, but
I've done worse.
So, I've got my new shoes
and I've got my new white
pants. I stocked up on a new
lipstick pencil and a new
purse I'm ready for Lent.
Ready to go without and sacri-
fice and suffer for Jesus.

Oh, who am I kidding? Not
God, that's for sure.
A few years ago, I went to
two Ash Wednesday services,
one in the morning at a local
Catholic church to cover it for
the newspaper and then in
the evening at my church.
I remember telling my hus-
band that I was going twice
and him asking, 'Are you that
bad?"
He has no idea.
Just the fact that I'm load-
ing up my closet and counting
down the 40 days of no recre-
ational shopping (and won-
dering if I can redefine the
concept of "recreational"
shopping in order to find
loopholes) should be evidence
enough that, yes, I am that
bad.
When I was a kid, our fam-
ily gave up sweets for Lent,
except ice cream, because my
dad likes ice cream. Also, I'm
pretty sure we ate sweets on
Sunday because that was the
day we usually went to visit
my grandmother at her bak-
ery and it would be a sin not
to eat her fudgy chocolate
cake.
Loopholes, y'all. It's all
about the loopholes.
Frankly, I don't know why I
even attempt participating in
Lent since I'm often half-
hearted at best in the days
leading up to it.
But every year, something
happens on Ash Wednesday I
come to church with my luke-
warm faith and lame attempts
at self-sacrifice, and as the
service begins I'm presented
with not only the call to daily
repentance and self-denial
but also the deep love of
Jesus.
There's a story of a man
who was such a big sinner
that he boasted "only the

pope can absolve me." So, he
went to the pope to confess
his sins, and for his penance
the pope gave him a list of
things to do Bible reading,
giving money to the poor,
doing good deeds. But the
man had an excuse for every
penance the pope gave him.
Finally, the pope gave him a
ring and instructed him to
read the inscription every
day: "Jesus loves me."
Every day he read it, and as
he pondered the message he
ended up doing the penances
the pope had given him to do
- and he did them joyfully
It's as my pastor often says,
"We don't deny ourselves to
get the smile of God. We deny
ourselves because we already
have it."
'Jesus loves me" always
comes before sacrifice or self-
denial.
On Ash Wednesday, I always
walk into church and enter
Lent feeling defeated and
guilty before I even begin, but
I always leave feeling loved by
Jesus and renewed, eager to
deny myself as a self-disci-
pline to reign in my self-indul-
gent tendencies.
And yet, even if I don't, even
if I try and can't, looking
ahead to Easter, the Cross and
the Resurrection reminds me
that being right with God is
not dependent on what I give
up for him, but solely on what
Jesus gave up for me.
OK, now I'm ready for Lent.

At the Marsh Bend
event, visitors and resi-
dents were able to take
advantage of free
kayaking right along
with more experienced
paddlers. Another event
is scheduled for April 5
in Lake Panasoffkee.

PARTY
continued from Page
dors from burgers to
ribs and specialty soda.
Out of the visitors on
site, about 45 camped out.
While Marsh Bend is not
an overnight park, the
county provided excep-
tion for the event.
Smiley said Paddle
Florida president, Bill
Richards, was impressed
by the county's efforts in
accommodating the
group event. Paddle

events, promoting water
conservation, wildlife
and spring preservation
and waterway protection.
The organization hosts
events across the state.
At the Marsh Bend
event, visitors and resi-
dents were also able to
take advantage of free
kayaking. Smiley said
they brought in Aardvark
Kayaks, who provided

several kayaks for public
use.
Folks were able to go
out at no charge and
boats were in and out all
day, with some participat-
ing in a guided eco-tour,
while others ventured off
on their own.
The company also pro-
vided two tandem boats,
so kids could go out with
their parents.
Next up is General
Sumter's Last Stand in
the Big Fish Bass Tourna-
ment. Set for April 5,
check-in begins at 6 a.m.
with an after party at
Werda-Heckamiat Fish-
ing Resort.

Hospice Call Center provides round-the-clock care

For a caregiver whose
loved one is dealing with a
life-limiting illness, nights
and weekends can seem
especially long. If the pa-
tient is very uncomfort-
able or symptoms seem
out of the ordinary, the
ability to speak to a "live
person," instead of an an-
swering service, can bring
tremendous comfort to the
family member and pa-
tient.
Cornerstone Hospice
and Palliative Care now
operates an afterhours
Call Center, staffed by reg-
istered nurses who spe-
cialize in triage. The
experienced hospice
nurses field calls from
Cornerstone patients
and families across the or-
ganization's seven-county
region.
"The Triage nurses pro-
vide support for families
and are able to reassure

the callers," said
Desiree Kalarovich,
RN, Cornerstone Hospice
Call Center and on call Su-
pervisor "We had many
surprised patients and
caregivers when they find
out nurses are answering
the phones
and they don't need to
leave a message for some-
one to call back. We could
hear the smiles over the
phone lines."
The Triage nurses can

provide symptom manage-
ment to patients and fami-
lies and are in contact
with the Cornerstone
physicians on call if
needed, sometimes avoid-
ing a trip to the emergency
room.
The call center team
can dispatch medical per-
sonnel as well as other
members of the Corner-
stone Hospice interdisci-
plinary team, such as
social workers and chap-

lains, if necessary to meet
the family's needs.
'At the end of each shift,
the Triage team sends a
report to each of the Hos-
pice teams to apprise
them of the calls and visits
that occurred after hours
ensuring seamless care
24/7," said Kalarovich.
The call center is at Cor-
nerstone Hospice's
Southridge office in
Tavares, off County Road
561.

I don't want a cheap funeral, but I can save a lot

of money by planning now...so why not?

rI'm a person who plans ahead and I'm also
pretty careful with the money I make.
Since someday my Family and I will need a
reliable Funeral home, why not make my arrangements
Si 0 now and lock in a low price that I can control?
SThe old saying is true: you can't take your
money with you. But, if I make my plans now I can
make the decisions on all the details that manrter to
me, including the cost, and that's like leaving more
'* money behind for my wife and kids.

Mesiemore heroes in

South Sumter 5-3 win

LARRY BUGG
Times Correspondent
Marissa Mesiemore
didn't enter Friday night's
softball game expecting
to become a heroine.
She certainly did
emerge from that game
heroically, however.
The hard-throwing
South Sumter High fresh-
man pitcher entered the
Eustis-South Sumter
game relieving Skye Dav-
enport in the third inning.
Eustis's Tyra Bowers
blasted a solo home run
and Taneshia Glover
added a two-run shot to
give the visitors a 3-1
lead.
Enter Mesiemore.
She struck out the next
three batters and Eustis
did not score again as
South Sumter (6-1) beat
Eustis (6-2) 5-3. Eustis was

ranked seventh in Class
5A before the game.
South Sumter has now
won six in a row
Mesiemore struck out
10 batters, allowed three
hits and one walk in
pitching five innings to
take the victory She even
struck out Erynn Brisson
with two outs and the
bases loaded to end the
game.
Afterwards, she was all
smiles.
"It felt good," she said.
"I knew I had to come in
and help my team. We
gave it our all. It felt good
to come back and win.
"We are fortunate to
have her," said South
Sumter coach Heather
Kadur. "She's an asset to
this team. She is only
going to grow. I'm very
proud of her. We have
very high expectations of

all of our players. She
came in and finished the
job. They (Eustis) are a
very well coached, disci-
plined and had a lot of
good athletes. We played
a good team, a very good
team."
The Raiders were also
fortunate to have Morgan
Mobley Mobley was 3-for-
3 with three runs, three
stolen bases and used her
legs to take two of those
runs from Eustis. She
scored runs on a passed
ball and two errors.
"Morgan manufactured

Question:
What is the tall, stalky, yellow wild-
flower I am seeing on the roadsides
blooming in February? It looks like a
foxglove.
Answer:
It is not a foxglove, which is a com-
monly-seen, cool-season annual in
landscaping here. It is Verbascum
thapsus also called Mullein and grows
3-5' tall. It is invasive in many states
but not in Florida.

Question:
My hibiscus buds are falling off.
What is causing this?
Answer:
Certain insects (thrips, caterpillars
and a hibiscus bud midge) can cause
bud drop. Some of these insects are
too small to be seen without magnifi-
cation. Lack of nutrients, too much fer-
tilization, too much water, not enough
water, and poor drainage can also be
contributing factors. It is also not un-
common for this to happen on certain
varieties, especially the double blos-
som forms. Snip off part of the hibis-

cus, immediately place it in a zip-type
bag (so no insects can escape), and
bring it to our plant clinic. You should
also include a few of the fresher look-
ing buds that have dropped. We'll
check the samples for insects and re-
view care and culture of hibiscus with
you.

Question:
A friend gave me a bird-of-
paradise plant in a pot and I planted it
several months ago. Why won't it
bloom?
Answer:
Bird-of-paradise plants typically
need about 3 years to bloom once they
have been relocated from a pot to the
landscape. If this particular plant was
originally grown from seed, it can take
up to 5 years for a first bloom.
Be sure not to over-fertilize. Fertil-
ize it every 3 months (March, June,
September) during our warm season
with a low nitrogen, bloom-boosting,
slow release fertilizer.

properly care for your bird-of-

Gardeners Alert! We know you are
all just itching to get out there and
start pruning those plants! Be patient.
We still could have another frost and
even a possible freeze. St. Patrick's
Day is the date we usually recommend
to begin pruning. Bear in mind the last
2 days of March 2013 we had frosts.
And not everything needs pruning; i.e.,

Adventures with basil to reduce sodium

In my column last week, I de-
fined what sodium is, its func-
tion in our diets along with
ways sage can be used to reduce
sodium in the diet.
It is clear the American popula-
tion loves their salt along with en-
hancing flavors of food. I want to
share information over the next
few weeks on how we can use vari-
ous herbs to reduce sodium in our
diets while enhancing delicious
flavors. This week we are going to
take an adventure with basil in re-
ducing sodium for a healthy
lifestyle.
Basil originated in Asia, Africa
and India before it was brought to
ancient Greece by Alexander the
Great. Basil arrived in the United
States in the early 1600s. Ancient
Greeks call basil the "royal herb"
and many gardeners call it the
"king of the herb." Basil is an in-
dispensable herb from the mint
family, originally used medicinally
but has been grown since the nine-
teenth century as a staple of herb
gardens and a favorite in culinary
uses
Basil is described as a tender an-
nual that grows from six inches to
thirty-six inches. A mint family rel-
ative with more than 150 species,
basil (Ocimum spp.) has a flavor
and use for every taste. It has an
extraordinary taste including the
following: sweet with peppery
overtones, minty, spicy and
licorice. Basil is very easy to grow
and can be started from seeds. It
grows best in loose and rich soil in
full sun. Seedlings may be started
indoors and moved to the garden
when the night temperatures are
above 55 degrees. Plants should be
spaced 12 to 18 inches apart when
planted in the ground. The plant
has flowers spikes of small white,
pink or purple and bloom from
mid-summer to fall that need to be
pinched back to provide more nu-
trients to the plant. The flowers
can be used as garnishes or in sal-
ads. Leaves vary in color and rang-
ing in size from small, light green
and smooth to large, serrated and
dark purple.
Basil can be divided into four
main groups: sweet green, dwarf

green, purple leaved and scented
leaf Purple leaved basils are both
edible and very ornamental. This
type of basil also has leaf texture
that can be ruffled or serrated. The
most popular types of basil for culi-
nary uses are: sweet basil, cinna-
mon basil, lemon basil, purple opal
basil and Thai basil. Sweet basil is
the most common type used for
cooking. It has a spicy, mildly pep-
pery flavor with a trace of mint and
clove. Sweet basil accents the fla-
vor of tomatoes. Cinnamon basil
has green leaves with purple tint,
pink and white flowers and an
awesome cinnamon flavor and fra-
grance. Cinnamon basil is great in
apple and most fruit dishes, lemon
basil has pale dull green leaves
and white flowers with a strong
lemon fragrance and flavor Lemon
basil is great with chicken and fish
dishes and fruit. Purple opal basil
has a deep purple and shiny leaf
and lavender flowers. It is excel-
lent in vinegar and garnishes. The
purple leaf color will turn the vine-
gar purple in color Thai basil has
bright green, smooth leaves, white
and deep lavender flowers, a
strong clove scent and spicy flavor
It is great for stir fry dishes.
How do you harvest and store
basil? Basil should be harvested in
the early morning after the dew
evaporates or in the evening after
the sun has gone down. Avoid har-
vesting during the intense after-
noon sun to capture the basil oils
for flavor at their highest levels. It
is important to keep the blooms
pinched back to extend the life of
the plant. Use scissors or a sharp
knife to harvest Basil, placing it in
a basket or colander Rinse or wash
fresh Basil with cool running tap
water just before preparing or eat-
ing. Do not use soap or detergents.

The action of rinsing or washing
will help reduce the numbers of
harmful bacteria on fresh herbs.
Cut away damaged pieces before
preparing or eating. Bunches of
fresh Basil can be stored in a glass
of water stems down with a plastic
bag over the leaves for up to a
week, be sure to change the water
every 2 days.
Refer to University of
Florida/IFAS Extension Factsheet:
FCS8748 "Fresh Herbs: Safe han-
dling Practices for Consumers",
when handling and preparing
fresh herbs to follow steps you can
take to reduce your risk of food-
borne illness from fresh herbs.
Store all dried herbs in a cool dry,
dark place in an airtight container
Dried vs Fresh: Dried herbs are
stronger than fresh cut herbs. Indi-
viduals must keep in mind if a
recipe calls for dried herbs use two
to three times as much fresh herb.
The culinary use of Basil is for
enhancing the flavor. American's
typically consume 3,400 to 6,000
milligrams of sodium daily It's
clear that Americans have a taste
for salt, but salt plays a role in high
blood pressure. According to the
Dietary Guidelines of 2010, every-
one, including kids, should reduce
their sodium intake to less than
2,300 milligrams of sodium a day
(about 1 teaspoon of salt). Adults
age 51 and older, African Ameri-
cans of any age, and individuals
with high blood pressure, diabetes,
or chronic kidney disease should
further reduce their sodium intake
to 1,500 mg a day Increased sodium
in the diet can lead to health com-
plications such as: hypertension,
cardiovascular disease, kidney
problem and other health compli-
cations. Sodium is found in cured
foods, processed foods, it is used as
a preservative in foods and to en-
hance the flavor of food. To help re-
duce the sodium In your diet use
Basil as a sodium substitute. Basil
is traditional in Italian, Mediter-
ranean and Thai cooking. Do not
limit your Basil use to only
spaghetti sauce, tomato dishes and
pesto.

Fun andGAMES

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Take
time from your busy schedule to check
out what's going on around you. You
might find that someone has been
secretly trying to pull the wool over
those beautiful Sheep's eyes.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Once
again, the Bovine's boldness pays off
in uncovering the source of a disturb-
ing workplace situation. Your personal
life calls for patience, as a certain mat-
ter plays itself out.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Forget
about going all out to impress someone
in your personal life. Just being your-
self is all that matters. A workplace
decision will need more time. Don't
rush into it.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22)
Some supersensitive Crabs might
take offense at what they perceive as
a slight. But a closer look points to a
simple misunderstanding. The week-
end holds a welcome surprise.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Sure,
you can roar your head off over some-
one's failure to keep a promise. But the
wiser course would be to ask why it
happened. Be prepared for an answer
that might well surprise you.
VIRGO (August 23 to September
22) A developing relationship needs
time to find its direction. So please be
patient and resist pushing things along.
A recently cooled-down workplace
situation could heat up again.

LIBRA (September 23 to Octo-
ber 22) Congratulations. Your well-
thought-out proposal seems to be
working. Someone who hasn't agreed
with you on most things in the past
could turn out to be one of your major
supporters.
SCORPIO (October 23 to Novem-
ber 21) Things seem to be going well.
However, you can still expect criti-
cism some of it pretty heavy. But as
long as you can back up your position,
you'll be able to rise above it.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to
December 21) Getting together with
people who care for you is a great way
to get that ego boost you might feel
you need at this time. Things start to
look brighter by week's end.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to
January 19) You should be able to
continue with your plans once you get
past those temporary delays. Surprise,
surprise. An offer to help comes from a
most unlikely source.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to Feb-
ruary 18) Prioritizing your tasks is
important this week because of all
those demands you have to deal with.
The pressure eases in time for you to
enjoy the weekend.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20)
Save your energy and stay focused on
what has to be done, despite all those
distractions you're likely to face. You
should see some evidence of real prog-
ress by week's end.
BORN THIS WEEK: You are a
generous, giving person who is always
ready, willing and more than able to
help others in need.

rides and test your luck along the midway
while deciding what treats to sample from

plenty to do.

rides and carnival games. You can ride the
rides and test your luck along the midway
while deciding what treats to sample from
a variety of vendors selling everything from
pizza to waffle cones, from barbecue to cot-
ton candy

view from local schools to businesses to or-
ganizations.
Whatever your interest, the Sumter

fits the bill.
