Sumter sheriffs Cpl. Alan Hamilton is being hailed as a hero and Good Samaritan this week after helping to subdue a retired police officer accused of shooting and killing a man in Pasco County on Monday afternoon at the Cobb Theater in Wesley Chapel. Cpl. Alan Hamilton, who was off duty at the time, did not hesitate. He went into the hot zone and subdued the subject, said Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco. He was a hero. Sumter Sheriff Bill Farmer echoed Noccos praise saying that Hamilton took the gun from the suspects hand and kept him seated until Pasco law enforcement arrived. It might have been worse than it was, Farmer said. Im proud of Deputy Hamilton for exercising good judgment and taking the gun. Farmer said Hamiltons efforts may have avoided more tragedy. It was a bad thing when you go to a movie and someone gets shot over texting. I cant fathom such a senseless taking of life. He said its been a difficult experience for Hamilton and his wife as they deal with the Monday tragedy. Hamilton has declined to discuss his involvement in the incident with the media. The officer has been employed with the sheriffs office since 2002 and A very welcome home Larissa Hitchcox missed her Nana and Papa after all, she was across the world in Germany, while they were back in Webster. She had missed some school, as the family was transferred from Texas to Germany for her daddys military career and with everything going on, she didnt have much interest in her new home. She didnt want to do anything in Germany, said Larissas mom, Alecia. Thats when Mrs. Hitchcox and her husband, Sgt. Jacob Hitchcox decided to let her stay with her grandparents and attend school in Sumter County. The problem was, she grew up with Nana around, all her life and she had to leave all that behind and she was not happy, said Mrs. Hitchcox. For the family, it has meant a year of separation, as Larissa stayed with her grandparents, Cindy and Glenn Jacobs. But last week, in a surprise reunion, Larissa got her parents and younger brother Jacob back. Mrs. Hitchcox said she knew they were coming, but See HOME,Page 4 Tractor trailer rolls over ... POSTMASTER:SENDADDRESSCHANGESTO SUMTERCOUNTYTIMES. Police report Investigators are still attempting to recover items taken from a Jan. 3 burglary in The Villages that happened while the homeowners slept. The burglary occurred when someone entered the home by tearing out a screen, according to a Sumter sheriffs office report. The homeowners slept through the burglary but were awakened by several of their dogs that were acting unusual, according to sheriffs Lt. Bobby Caruthers. The dogs usually always stay on the porch, but this evening they came into the homeowners bedroom, Caruthers said. When the homeowners checked the house, they discovered the torn screen along with a missing 50-inch flat screen television, debit cards and other household items. The television set was recovered shortly after the burglary along a roadway by a deputy responding to a different emergency, the report states. Crime scene technicians processed the television for fingerprints. Later that same morning, detectives investigating the burglary discovered that two suspects were using the victims bank cards in Leesburg and Winter Garden, according to the report. Detectives were able to use the stores surveillance footage to identify the two suspects and then their identity was confirmed by matching fingerprints found on the television set. Last week, sheriffs detectives arrest a 16-yearold juvenile from Coleman for the crime. He was charged with one count of burglary of an occupied dwelling and one count of grand theft. Additionally, warrants were issued for a second suspect, Derrell Harrison Jr., 20, of Coleman. Harrison was apprehended at his home on charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling, grand theft and fraudulent use of personal identification. He was placed in the Sumter County Detention Center. He has also worked as a school resource officer, a detective and as a member of the sheriffs office Special Investigations Unit. Hamilton and his wife were inside the movie theater Monday afternoon, preparing to watch Lone Survivor, when a confrontation broke out between two couples over texting. The victim, Chad Oulson, 43, was shot in the chest during an argument with retired Tampa police officer Curtis Reeves, 71. Reeves was sitting behind Oulson and his wife Nicole Oulson, according to a Pasco County sheriffs report. According to witnesses, Reeves confronted Oulson about texting during the movie previews and went to advise management, the report states. When Reeves returned, additional words were exchanged and Oulson turned and threw a bag of popcorn in Reeves face. Reeves reportedly then displayed a handgun and shot Oulson in the chest. Witnesses said they did not see any punches thrown, but during an interview with authorities, Reeves reportedly advised that Oulson turned and stood up, striking him in the face with an unknown object. Reeves claims that he was in fear of being attacked and he removed the .380 pistol from his pants pocket and fired one round, striking the victim, according to the report. Reeves is charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court Tuesday afternoon and is being held without bond. HEROcontinued from Page 1 Memorial for C. L. McCollum Ave., Bushnell, Fla., 33513, or e-mail news@sctnews.com.OPINIONS INVITED Sumter County TimesOpinionLetter to the editor Unemployment Is StimulativeI am sure you have heard the Democrats are saying that paying unemployment is stimulative. Unemployment benefits also help economic growth. Those who are unemployed use the money to buy basics, including shelter, food, and clothing. As a result, every dollar spent on unemployment benefits stimulates $1.64 in economic demand. For example, during the final quarter of 2008, unemployment programs paid about $34.9 billion in benefits to some 8 million unemployed workers. This boosted economic growth by $57 billion. Its estimated that every month benefits are extended costs taxpayers $10 billion. However, it also generates $16.4 billion in economic growth. Surprise, surprise they, the Democrats cant see the forest for the trees! What do I mean? It is quite clear it has been the progressive policies has grown government, increasing taxes that have broken down the family and reducing discretionary family spending, driving down consumption and demand resulting in fewer jobs. How hypocritical is it that they say it is OK to increase taxes that has contributed to unemployment that reduces productivity and that is stimulus? But they say tax cuts, that will create productive jobs, they arent simulative and will hurt the economy? Dont get me wrong, they are right about putting money in the hands of the people! It is very clear, they did not know what they were saying, that they were in fact making the case for tax cuts. Making the actions they have taken are politically misleading and political pandering, instead of the best interest of the country. Just think how stimulative it would be if instead of putting money in the hands of about two percent of the people, they put it in the hands of 100 percent of the people! Phil Longo Bushnell thought it would be another week. Her parents and brother were sitting down when Mrs. Jacobs told her that she had a surprise. When Larissa came in and saw her family, she was emotional. She wanted to cry at first, she didnt know what to think, said her mom, adding that she turned away at first and then came over to hug them. It was pretty hard for all of us, Mrs. Hitchcox said, adding, Everyday I wanted to come back and get her. As hard as it was, Mrs. Hitchcox believes the transfer has benefited Larissa, noting the kindergartener had gotten behind in the school in Texas, but is now working on a first grade level. She didnt have an interest in anything in Germany, but is busy here, even playing softball. Of the difference a year has made in what she sees in her daughter, Mrs. Hitchcox said her daughter is very smart and then with a laugh, added, shes still this little outspoken girl. Larissa is relocating with her parents and brother, as they move to Texas. HOME continued from Page 1 Larissa Hitchcox is shown receiving flowers from her daddy, Sgt. Jacob Hitchcox, just after he surprised her with his return home. Sumter County announces the premier of the new Sumter County Tourism Website at www.DiscoverSumterFL.com. The newly launched site is the tourism portal to all there is to experience in Sumter County. The site contains information on tourism attractions such as airboat rides, fishing camps, historical sites, as well as restaurant listings for hungry travelers and lodging options for overnight visitors. The site also boasts a mapping feature that pinpoints attractions within Google Maps and recommends nearby eateries and accommodations based on your current location. According to Doug Smiley, president of Tangent Media, (the sites developer), besides the usual tourism related fodder, the website will seek to incorporate Sumter stories (real stories of users experiences while visiting Sumter County), complete with images, videos and other user generated content, whenever possible. User generated content is key to an effective tourism marketing strategy, said Smiley. There is no more compelling advertising than the testimonial of an actual visitor having a great experience while visiting the county, then telling others through their own words and pictures. County Commissioner Doug Gilpin, chairman of the Sumter County Tourism Development Council, reiterated Sumter Countys commitment to tourism. We need an informative and compelling website to promote our many diverse tourism assets, he said. We also have several other initiatives in the works aimed at bolstering tourism throughout the county, including a series of sporting and recreational events and an upgraded fairgrounds facility, with a schedule full of exciting new entertainment options. Sumter County businesses that benefit from tourism visitation have been asked to participate in this online promotional opportunity by submitting current contact information, pricing, descriptive copy and quality imagery to info@discoversumterfl.com to ensure their businesses are well represented. The mailing address for submitting hardcopy materials is: Tourism Materials, c/o Tangent Media!, 7257 C.R. 219, Suite B, Wildwood, Florida 34785. Any materials received will become the property of Sumter County with all appropriate rights reserved for its use in tourism marketing and promotions. Per your request also, we have moved our start time to 6 p.m. and we will close at 7:30 p.m. The Evening Gardener was created to serve our residents that work and cannot attend our daytime events so this will give everyone ample time to get to our sessions. You can register at www.eveninggardenerjanuary2014.eventbrite.com If you prefer to register offline or need more information call 352-7932728, Ext. 229 or email plantclinic@aol.com and leave your name, phone number and number of tickets requested. PAGEA6SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, JANUARY16, 2014 FROM THE GROUND UP Question: When I cut my rose buds for a flower arrangement, the buds never open. Can you tell me why?Answer:You are probably cutting the buds before they are ready. Cut the flowers once you see the green sepals at the base of the bud fold back toward the stem; you will also see the outer rose petals starting to unfurl. Look at the picture and youll see how the sepals have dropped. Buds cut any sooner will be too tight and cannot open. Also, make sure you use pruning shears sterilized with 70 percent rubbing alcohol before you prune! And sterilize again before you go to the next bush to take cuttings. If one of your plants becomes diseased, this will keep you from spreading it to the other roses. Make a clean cut just above a well-developed leaf to prevent die-back.Question: When do I prune my roses?Answer:Major pruning should be done in mid to late February. Just try to remember Valentines Day as your signal. You can do minimal pruning during the growing season. Go to http://extension.ifas.ufl.edu/hot_topics/lawn_and_g arden/pruning_roses.html for detailed information. If you dont have a computer, call the Ask the Master Gardener phone number below and well mail you information.Question:When it is time to start my spring vegetable garden?Answer:You can start seeds now as long as you can protect the plants during any frost or freeze we may experience. Usually, March 17(St. Patricks Day) is the last date for a frost in our zone. But last year fooled us! We had frost the last 2 days of March. At the end of March or first of April you should be able to safely put your veggie seedlings/plants outside. We are having a Spring Vegetable Gardening Seminar at the Extension Office in Bushnell on Feb. 18 at The Evening Gardener from 6 until 7:30 p.m. You can register at www.eveninggardenerfebruary2014.eventbrite.com or call us at 352-793-2728, Ext. 229 and leave your name, phone and number of tickets required. PAGEA10SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, JANUARY16, 2014 Lowell Gerry is breathing much better these days thanks to the help of community volunteers and the Mid-Florida Community Services Weatherization Program. The 644-square-foot, 1980 manufactured home that Gerry, his wife Vonda and their two high school student children share near Webster has undergone something of a transformation in the past several weeks, making their home more comfortable and healthier. Theres now new plywood decking on the floors, with new carpet and vinyl covers, a new heat pump air conditioning system, water heater, toilet and new floor insulation. For the former highway patrolman who has survived five heart attacks, the improvements brought much relief. I dont know what I would have done if these people hadnt come along, Gerry said. It was so dusty not mold, just lots of dust, he said. Were a lot better now, both psychologically and physically. We were all depressed, but were upbeat now. It was so embarrassing to have people come here, Gerry said. The floor was collapsing in many places and the old carpet that was in the home when they bought it 13 years ago smelled awful, and it was about impossible to keep cool or warm. Things began to change when the family got in contact with Brenda Mobley, Mid Florida Weatherization Program director. But, all of the improvements to the Gerry home are not just because of that program, Mobley said last week during a visit to the home. This is a community effort. Because the home was in such bad shape, it did not meet the minimum requirements for a weatherization project, Mobley said. That bothered her. I couldnt rest that night after hearing about this, she said. So she set out to get some help. First, she contacted the First Baptist Church of Bushnell. They responded with a force of volunteers who provided most of the labor for the project, donated carpeting and fed the crews doing the work, Mobley said. There was a day in November when 14 volunteers from the church showed up to work, Weatherization Coordinator Mickey Harrison said. Then, the weekend before Thanksgiving, 15 volunteered one day and six on the next. Others got involved with donations. Ken Lindquist and Quality Crafted Builders donated the new water heater. Habitat for Humanity of Lake and Sumter Counties donated a new toilet and supplies for its installation, two-by-four boards and the Tyvek house wrap material used to seal up the underside of the trailer. Harrison and his son came out on a weekend and crawled under the dwelling to clear-out the remains of the old underfloor covering and install the Tyvek as well as putting in sheet polymer vapor barrier on the ground beneath the home. That eliminated the draftiness from air leaks around the floor, Gerry said.Mickey was a oneman army. The Weatherization Program provided floor insulation, plywood for the new floor decking, new vinyl floor coverings for the kitchen and bathroom, the heat pump and new air ducts. But, it just couldnt have done without the donations and volunteers, Harrison said. An estimated $4,200 of materials and labor were donated to a very labor intensive project, according to Mobley. Knowing that Gerrys breathing is better as a result of all these efforts is A-one with her, Mobley said. This is what can happen when a community comes together. Funds for projects such as these are limited, she said. The funding comes from the Federal Department of Energy through a state agency to MidFlorida Community Services, headquartered in Brooksville. Mid-Florida serves a five-county area and weatherization funds are proportioned for each of the counties. Ten weatherization projects have been done in Sumter County for the current fiscal year ending in March, Mobley said. The funds dont last long, because there are so many people in need, Mobley said. Because much of Sumter is very rural, her organization tries to identify other resources to deal with deficiencies in homes that dont meet the minimum requirements of the program. Information about the Weatherization Program can be found online at www.mfcs.us.com or by contacting the program offices at 352-796-1427. Love Chassitys, Parents and Brother South Sumter girls disappear in 54-26 loss to Hernando The South Sumter High girls basketball team played a remarkable game Thursday night at the Hernando High gym. They played one good strong quarter and then practically disappeared in the second half. Hernando won the game 54-26. South Sumter is now 412. Hernando is 12-7. Unfortunately, the disappearing act seems to be a common practice. We do that a lot, said coach Keith Hileman who took over while head coach Julie Borum was sick. We play the first 15 minutes real well. We get after it on the boards. The shots go down. In the second half, they come out and its like they lost it. It seems like a key (lack of concentration). They start rushing things. We havent figured it out yet. In the second half, this year, we have kind of faded. South Sumter took a 14-9 lead in the first quarter. Zynia Carter led with seven points and five rebounds. Hernando came back to outpoint the visitors 14-8 in the second quarter. Carter led the Raiders with three points in limited action. Taziana Mathis led Hernando with five points and two rebounds. Hernando led 23-22 at halftime. The Raiders hurt themselves with 11 first half turnovers. South Sumter seemed utterly lifeless in the third quarter as Carter hit their only point. Hernando scored 15 to take a commanding 38-23 lead. Taziana Mathis had four points to lead the way. DAndrea Williams hit a three-point shot in the fourth quarter as the Raiders were outscored 16-3. Carter led South Sumter with 11 points, 10 in the first half. She also grabbed 11 rebounds. Mathis led the Leopards with 16 points and six rebounds. South Sumter had 20 turnovers. Often, Hernando had the ball before the Raiders could even attempt a shot. Florida DART Board member, Dr. Shannon Kennedy, DVM ownes Floral City Animal Clinic. He cares for all types of animals and he has a soft spot in his heart specifically for wildlife. So when Florida Fish and Wildlife located an African Spurred Tortoise they contacted Dr. Kennedy. The African Spurred Tortoise is not indigenous to Florida, and therefore could not be released into our environment. Sarge, as Dr. Kennedy calls him, will live with me. Originating from Africa, Sarge more than likely arrived here in the U.S from the exotic pet trade industry. African spurred tortoises not only arriving from Africa but also in importing and breeding facilities in Florida have been found with the African tortoise tick (amblyomma marmoreum) that is a carrier of the heartwater disease. A common disease in Africa, heartwater effects domestic and wild ruminants, including cattle, sheep, and goats and is usually fatal. To prevent a potential outbreak of heartwater that could threaten the domestic livestock industry and wildlife, precautions, regulations and restrictions have been taken, and strictly adhered to. Unfortunately many people buy these tortoises when they are small, not realizing how quickly they grow and how large they will become. With a lifespan of approximately 80 plus years, they will reach full growth in 15 to 20 years and weigh up to 110 lbs. When they become too big, the uninformed owners release the tortoises into the wild, unaware that it is illegal to release this species into the environment. As in aquiring any animal, and particularly with exotics, knowledge is crucial. Providing the proper housing, diet, and environment will keep the animal safe and healthy. Just as important is understanding all legal requirements and laws that you must adhere to that pertains to your specific exotic species. Sarge is a young tortoise that can live to 80 plus years. I plan to will him to my kids, laughs the good doctor. Sarge is in for a long and healthy life under the supervision and care of Dr. Kennedy.
