Free for all flea market planned Its nestled along U.S. 301 surrounded by large oak trees in a rural portion of the county about seven miles south of Bushnell. The Cowbell Convenience Store, in Croom-aCoochee, has been a mainstay in this rural part of Sumter County for decades. Throughout the years, the small store has struggled through uncertain times to provide groceries and other merchandise to that community even closing its doors for several years in the recent past. But now the shelves are packed with items. There is everything from frozen foods to soda, from handmade quilts to gloves. Its difficult to keep your eyes from wandering through the variety of items that comprise the store. It closed for eight years after my mom passed, said store manager Vaughn Decker. But in 2012 the store reopened. But the convenience store is preparing for a change. Come Monday, Jan. 20, the store with the exterior painted in white with brown cow-like designs, is set for a special grand opening. Starting at 8 a.m. that morning, the building will become the hub of a flea market with a fair price estate sale. Vendors, including anything from crafts to yard sale items, from hamburgers to plants, are welcomed to set up for free on the grounds. Traffic was backed up for several hours on Interstate 75 last Friday afternoon as clean up crews worked to clear debris and chemicals from the roadway following multiple traffic wrecks. While the wrecks closed the northbound outside lane of the interstate just north of Lake Panasoffkee for several hours, no one was reportedly injured in the collisions, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The wreck that tied up traffic happened about 1:25 p.m. Jan. 3 when a semi-tractor-trailer truck attempted to avoid collision with vehicles that had stopped in the roadway to avoid colliding with other vehicles involved in an unrelated crash, the report states. The truck driver unsuccessfully attempted to avoid colliding with stopped vehicles by attempting evasive maneuvers by breaking and swerving; but the front of the truck struck the rear of a utility trailer being towed by a Ford Fusion. The trailer rotated and jackknifed and struck the left side of the Ford and separated and came to final rest on the east shoulder of the road, the report states. The truck traveled onto the east shoulder and struck the left rear of a Chevy Tahoe before coming to final rest. None of the three drivers of the vehicles was injured, the report states. During the collisions, oil and brake fluid from the tractor trailer spilled onto the outside shoulder for a distance of about 500 feet, requiring closure of the outside lane for several hours. Charges are pending the results of an investigation. Thousands of visitors watched each of the days as a group of volunteers portraying Federal troops and Seminole Indians replayed the December 28, 1835, battle that became known as the Dade Massacre. The original battle resulted in the deaths of 105 of the 108 soldiers in a detachment led by Major Francis Dade and marked the beginning of the Second Seminole War. According to historic accounts, the battle was part the Seminoles organized resistance to further intrusion into their lands by American settlers. On what was described as a cold, damp winter day, about 180 Seminole warriors waited in hiding to ambush Dades troops as they marched from Fort Brooke (Tampa) to Fort King (Ocala). Three soldiers survived the initial attack, with one of them making it back toward Fort Brooke to tell of the battle. Parking will also be free to those attending the event. Decker said he is hopeful that the free flea market will spawn the development of a reoccurring Monday flea market on the 5.9-acre property. Theres a lot of space here and we can probably hold about 60 vendors, he said. We really want to make this successful. Space is limited for the free event, so Decker is suggesting that vendors call early for a space. He can be reached by calling the store at 352-301-7283. Information is also available for vendors that may want to set up space on a repeating basis for Monday flea markets. SECO board approves plan for scholarship program The SECO Board of Trustees has voted to continue SECOs scholarship program for 2014. Up to twelve deserving high school seniors from the cooperatives service territory will each receive a $3,000 scholarship to assist them in going on to a college or technical school following their graduation. SECOs scholarship program has proven very popular with SECO members and, over the years, has helped many deserving students attain higher learning when that might have been difficult otherwise. SECO Director of Corporate Communications Barry Bowman said, The selection of those students who will receive scholarships will be based on each individuals past and present activities in school and the community, financial need and scholastic record. All applicants will be evaluated by an independent panel of educators from around the SECO service territory. He noted that to qualify, graduates must reside in a home being served by SECO and be enrolled in an accredited college, university or vocational/technical school by the end of 2014. Applications are now available at area high school guidance offices and at any of SECOs customer service centers in Marion, Lake, Citrus, and Sumter counties. They must be returned to SECO no later than April 4, 2014. The SECO scholarship program reaffirms the Co-ops commitment to the future of our young people, and while the program has no impact on the cost of electricity, it is a significant benefit for those awardees struggling to fund their higher education, concluded Bowman. Nearly 100 law enforcement officers and emergency rescue personnel took part in a mock active shooter training in late December, according to Sumter sheriffs Lt. Bobby Caruthers. Emergency Management Director Dave Casto utilized a grant through his department, which funded the training. The exercise was done completely on computer and put participants through simulated unpredictable situations in real time, according to Caruthers. Dozens of participants were scattered around the training room in groups. They worked off the computer screens and their radios, as they sat beneath a large screen simulation of the location. Some of the participants took on supervisor roles and because it was done on computer, they could have repeated scenarios and situations, if they needed to, Caruthers said. They worked to follow agency policies in the simulated situations and improve their efficiency. It was lifelike, as far as once you got on the computer. Each participant had their own person on screen and the location was an actual location in Sumter County. Setting up a location for use takes a lot of time, starting with just getting permission to utilize a site. The simulated, actual location was a benefit for them. As for the actual exercise, they always like the actual exercise to be hands-on, he said, adding that he got comments from some that This was the next best thing. We got a lot of good response from the law enforcement side. It was also really good to see the different groups, all working together. Because it was active shooter, it was very intense at times. Caruthers said they were using their radios and when they were under attack, you could tell by their voice it was hot and it was lifelike. We were able to share tactics, so it was a learning experience. Its something that these guys can carry on with their respective departments. The training started at 1 p.m. and lasted until 10 p.m. at night and was held in mid-December. There was no leaving for a meal, he said, adding that they got 30 minutes to eat on site and then went right back to the exercise. The objectives were met, he said, noting they were focusing on life safety, incident stabilization and property conservation. We really thought, if we could do this exercise, we wanted to make it happen, Caruthers said, citing the current environment of the nation and past incidents across the country. He said he believes the training was highly beneficial. The sheriffs office consistently offers training and this was unique because we tried to involve the other agencies. Aside from sheriffs office staff, the 96 participants included staff members of the Sumter County Unified Fire Services, the Villages Public Safety Department, Rural Metro EMS and the Wildwood Police Department.SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, JANUARY9, 2014, PAGEA3 ESTABLISHED1881(USPS#535-880)GIVEUSACALL NewsDepartment..............352-793-2161 Circulation..................1-888852-2340 RetailAdvertising....... ....... 352-793-2161 ClassifiedAdvertising..TollFree1-877-676-1403 Fax.......................... 352-793-1486 TheSumterCountyTimesispublishedThursdays, 52timesayear,forasubscriptionpriceof $25.00peryearinSumterCountyby:SUMTERCOUNTYTIMES204E.McCollumAve. Bushnell,Florida33513 Deadlines:Displayadvertising Proof....................Fridayat3:00p.m. Final....................Mondayat3:00p.m. ClassifiedAdvertising.........TuesdayatnoonPeriodicalPostagepaidatBushnell,Florida,and atadditionalmailingoffices. Susan NoellStatement of beliefsRecently, several letters have offered opinions on what the Republican Party should stand for or in their view already does stand for. Some of the letters have made detailed suggestions about what the Republican Party must to do to achieve victories in the future. While constructive criticism is always welcome, establishing policy and setting priorities are the responsibilities of the Party itself. The heart and soul of the Republican Party is its grass roots, the elected county precinct representatives, traditionally known as county committee men and county committee women. As local Republican Party representatives, the committee men and women are well informed about the issues that concern their constituents. Unlike many of the political pundits, the committee people have their finger on the pulse of public opinion and are often opinion makers. During 2013, the elected Sumter County Republican committee men and women spend considerable time and effort discussing the central components of what was to become their Statement of Beliefs. After thoughtful deliberation, unanimous agreement was reached on the following: Statement of Beliefs Inspired by our Constitution and its guiding principles of limited government, individual freedom and the rule of law we, as Sumter County Republicans will work to Increase the efficiency and effectiveness of Government Balance the budget, reduce the debt and lower the cost of living Maintain a strong and ready military Develop a program for meaningful healthcare reform Secure our borders and develop comprehensive immigration reform Simplify tax laws and reduce taxes Increase the opportunities for and quality of education Establish energy independence Promote an economic climate that encourages job development Maintain the Constitution as the peoples governing principle To quote Ronald Reagan, We must paint our philosophy in bold colors, not pale pastels May God Bless America. Richard L. Cole, Jr. The VillagesJanuary is Blood Donor Awareness MonthYou may pass them in the aisle at the grocery, sit next to them in church or see them stepping off of a school bus right here in our community are a quiet group of people who are saving lives because they make the decision to donate blood. January is set aside nationally as Blood Donor Awareness Month, and LifeSouth would like to thank all of those who donated blood in the past year. Whether it was a blood drive at school, at work, in the parking lot of a shopping center or at one of our donor centers, this special group of people made an impact for people living right here. There are thousands of people who survived to welcome 2014 because these anonymous lifesavers decided to take a few minutes out of a day to make a difference. Cancer patients, trauma victims, newborn babies and many more benefitted. Nationally, donor numbers are small just more than 4 percent of Americans give regularly. Fortunately, many come back again and again to help. They have saved the lives of our neighbors, our friends and possibly their own family members, and they could certainly use some help in 2014. At a time when were still considering our New Years resolutions, think about becoming a blood donor or giving more often because that change could help someone right here in Hernando County. An investment of a few minutes could mean a lifetime of difference for someone in the coming year. Sincerely, Ed Keith District Director LifeSouth Community Blood CentersZoo providing some reductionsTimes are tough. Budgets are tight, but children come first. The Florida International Teaching Zoo Give it timeIn the early 1980s, General Motors embarked upon an enormous investment in automation. In 1985, it opened its showcase: the new Hamtramck factory in Detroit, Michigan, had 50 automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) to ferry parts around the plant, and 260 robots to weld and paint. It turned out not to be such a good idea. The production lines ground to a halt for hours while technicians tried to debug software. When they did work, the robots often began dismembering each other, smashing cars, spraying paint everywhere, or even fitting the wrong equipment. It takes time to get new systems up and running correctly. The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) had a rocky start but give it time and it will be as dependable and efficient as the other government programs Medicare and Social Security. Ron Lowe Nevada City, Ca.Warning on flu shotsSeems that we are being mislead about the importance and dangers of the flu vaccines they are pushing on us. Right now, the CDC in their own words does not know the real death rates of people who actually die of the flu. They use the death certificates cause of death and then guess if it is actually the flu. States are not required to report flu deaths and most do not. It includes a lot of other causes of death assumed to be flu related. CDC does not know exactly how many people die from seasonal flu each year. States are not required to report individual seasonal flu cases or deaths of people older than 18 years of age to CDC. Seasonal influenza is infrequently listed on death certificates of people who die from flu-related complications. The CDC says, Many seasonal flu-related deaths occur one or two weeks after a persons initial infection, either because the person may develop a secondary bacterial co-infection (such as bacterial pneumonia) or because seasonal influenza can aggravate an existing chronic illness. The also say that most people who die from seasonal flurelated complications are not tested for flu. The real truth is that 36,000 people do not die every year as the CDC claims. There were between 600 and 750 influenza deaths from 1995 and 1997. In 2010 there were only 494 recorded flu related deaths. The real truth is no one knows if more people die from the flu or the flu vaccines itself. Since 1940. influenza related deaths rates were dropping not rising according to the CDC claims. There were only between 600 and 750 influenza deaths recorded annually between 1995 and 1997. Since the flu shots were implemented it seems the death rates have increased by the thousands. Studies from different organizations and Universities have shown that the flu vaccines are only 1.2 percent effective. Even in the CDCs own report you can reach the same conclusions. There is a video, information and the links that backs this information up at the National Vaccine Information Center. Flu vaccines can contain many harmful materials including detergent, mercury, formaldehyde, and strains of live flu virus. The flu shots do not work and are dangerous to use for the elderly, There is evidence that elderly that have gotten the flu vaccines for 3 to 5 years have a 10 times better chance to developing Alzheimers disease than people who did not have any flu shots. When a body gets older the immune system gets weaker thus making you more prone to illness. The CDC Board can not be trusted as they have a financial interest in these vaccines and they themselves decide who gets the vaccines. They are making billions of dollars on all of the vaccines they try to push so how can we trust them on our health and well being? PAGEA6SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, JANUARY9, 2014 FROM THE GROUND UP Question:Do the Master Gardeners ever supply speakers for various events? We would like to get someone to speak to our group about horticulture.Answer:Yes, we certainly do! Call us at 352793-2728, Ext. 229 and leave a message with your name, phone number and date you want a speaker; or you can email plantclinic@aol.com with your request. Well get back in touch with you and see what we can arrange.Question:My camellias need pruning. When can I do this?Answer:Camellias typically need minimal pruning. Do necessary shaping (remove limbs that might be rubbing against one another, etc.) in late winter or very early spring after blooming. Pruning in late summer or fall removes flower buds. Prune so that you do not harm the natural plant form, which can result in a dense layer of foliage that can block light from the interior. If the light is blocked, you will lose the foliage in that area.Question:We are only here during the winter and I would like something that blooms during that time. My neighbor has beautiful camellias. Can you give me instructions on planting them?Answer:Camellias are beautiful this time of year. Before planting, do a soil pH test to be sure they will thrive in that particular area. The Extension Office can do the test for you for $2. Camellias like a 5 to a 6.5 pH. They can be planted from November to February so they have time to get really good root growth before our hot weather. Mix a lot of organic materials in the planting area. Plant them with the root ball 1-2 above ground; planted too deeply this plant will not survive. Camellias do best in part shade and need good air circulation. For everything you need to know about growing camellias, go to this link http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ep002 To submit questions to Ask the Master Gardener please call 352-793-2728, Ext. 229 or email us at plantclinic@aol.com Photos courtesy of www.onlineplantguide.com UF/IFAS EXTENSION SUMTER COUNTY PLANT CLINIC OPEN TO THE PUBLICBushnell Location: 7620 SR 471, 352-793-2728, Ext. 229, Open Wednesday from 9 until 3 p.m. Villages Location: Sumter County Government Annex, 8033 E CR466, (Corner of Morse Blvd. & 466), 352689-4673, Open Monday & Thursday from 9 until 3 with the exception of the 2nd Thursday of each month when the annex Plant Clinic is closed for the day. PAGEA8SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, JANUARY9, 2014 Photos by Martin SteeleIn the aftermath of battle, Seminole warriors prepare to loot the fallen U.S. Troops on Saturday during the Annual Dade Battle Reenactment in Bushnell. This extended family from Groveland, portraying Black Seminoles, provided a trove of historic information about African-American involvement in the Seminole resistance to settlement of its Florida territory. the troops viewpoint. According to historical accounts, three Seminoles died in the battle. A Seminole reenactor portraying Jumper a Seminole leader provided a narration from the Native American perspective. Like many other visitors, Bobby and Sandra Dykes, park volunteers from Pigeon Forge, Tenn., viewed the reenactment for the first time. It was wonderful, very well done, very impressive, the Dykes said. Chad Welborn, Tampa, also was a first time observer, along with fouryear-old daughter Kate. It was awesome, she said. The volunteers really brought history to life, Chad Welborn said. They do a fantastic job. Kelly and Jim Hamblin with son Cole, Wesley Chapel, said they moved from Utah about four months ago and were attending the reenactment for the first time. They said they love history and thought the event was fascinating. They had attended some historic events in Utah and were surprised at how different the military and Seminole wardrobe was compared to what they were familiar with in western depictions. The event reminded them somewhat of going to a Mountain Man Rendezvous, they said. Were having a great time, Jim Cole said. While the battle reenactment might have been the most dramatic moments of the weekend event, there was much more for visitors enjoyment. There were traditional camps for both Seminoles and the Federal troops. And, the volunteer warriors and soldiers were typically enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge of military, Native American and Florida history. Visitors could also watch demonstrations of cannon and musket firing and tomahawk throwing while their were historic period games for the kids. Many were drawn to the sutlers trade fair, a display by merchants and craftsmen dealing in the types of things that early settlers used. The sutlers did much more than just sale souvenirs many provided on-site demonstrations of crafts including spinning rabbits fur into yarn, constructing wooden buckets and butter churns with hand tools, forging of wrought iron by a blacksmith, and making cornmeal with a hand-operated grinder. Blacksmith Steven Estenson, Fruitland Park, demonstrates his craft Saturday at the Annual Dade Battle Reenactment in Bushnell. Estensons portable shop was among the vendors at the sutlers trade fair. As his fellow soldiers look on, Brian Biscuit Butler, Yulee, does some last-minute gun smithing Saturday in preparation for the Annual Dade Battle Reenactment in Bushnell Emily Hooten, Bushnell, on Saturday learns about making corn meal with the guidance of Gene Fourakre, Ocala, at the sutlers trade fair at Dade Battlefield Historic Site, Bushnell, during the annual reenactment of the Dade Massacre. Growing up in a large family, we were always visiting aunts, uncles and cousins. Most had the usual pet dog or cat in their home. Only Uncle Tony had a different pet. He had a bird; a budgie to be exact. Although his name escapes me, I distinctly remember that little bird with the big personality. Every morning my Aunt would open his cage and the bird would fly out and sit on Uncle Tonys bald head and chirp away. When breakfast was served, the bird would fly from Uncle Tony;s head onto the table and share Uncle Tonys breakfast. The little bird never bothered anyone elses plate, only eating from my uncles plate. The two were the best of buddies. Birds are wonderful pets. The ASPCA recommends budgies, finches, canaries, or cockatiels for the first time bird caretaker. I am captivated by these different species and their wide range of beautiful brilliant colors. Years ago, Ronnie and I had finches, and they were a joy to watch and care for. Because some birds find themselves homeless, avian rescue groups have formed. These bird lovers are very knowledgeable and can answer many questions. If you want to rescue a homeless bird, adopt from one of many avian rescues that can be found on www.petfinder.com. They can help you find the perfect bird for your lifestyle. A hardy little bird, the finch comes in a wide range of colors and has a life span of seven to ten years. They are fairly inexpensive and low maintenance. Although not very social with humans, they do need the company of other finches, so plan on keeping at least two birds. Finches are adorable little birds that are amusing to watch. If you want only one bird, consider a canary. These birds dont like to share their cage, and are perfectly happy being your one and only bird. They are beautiful little birds. And although they do not like to be handled, the canary does like attention and will chirp cheerfully and entertain you with its song. The most popular of the avian species are the budgies and the cockatiels. Available in a wide range of beautiful colors, these little birds are intelligent, friendly, and gentle. Budgies and cockatiels are very sociable and enjoy interacting with humans. They will perch on your shoulder and mimic words or household noises. An average lifespan of 12 to 15 years, the cockatiel is twice the size of the budgie at 11 to 14 inches long. If you do plan to get a bird, do your homework first. You will need to get the right size cage; one that is large enough for your bird to fly short distances and exercises his wings. The cage should be cleaned daily. Pellet high quality food for your specific species of bird and dark leafy greens along with certain fruits will give your new bird a well-balanced diet. Fresh water should always be available. Providing safe appropriate toys for your bird will exercise mind and body and prevent boredom. To keep your new pet healthy and happy, learn all you can about the species of your choice. You will be rewarded with many years of companionship and joy that you and your birds will share together.
