Florida Sportsmen Quail Forever is just months old in Sumter County, but already theyve hosted a youth event and a fundraiser to provide food to families for Christmas. In recent weeks theyve been gathering donations from the community to provide non-perishable groceries to families and pulling together the money to purchase 50 turkeys, according to President Gary Marriage The turkey dinner packets were distributed to agencies or churches around the county, from Center Hill to Coleman, where theyll be distributed to families. Rick Scott for improved FCAT scores. Bushnell Elementary School, Lake Panasoffkee Elementary School and Webster Elementary School showed great improvements with regard to the performance of their students on several areas of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. While each school serves at risk students, they have been able to meet and exceed state standards in a variety of subject areas. Bushnell Elementary School had 69 percent of students scoring a satisfactory or higher on the Reading FCAT. This elevated their ranking to 73 out of 1,649 Title I schools in Florida. In math, 68 percent of students at Bushnell scored satisfactory or higher, which ranked them 122 out of 1,648. In Science, 74 percent of Bushnell students scored satisfactory or higher, giving them an impressive ranking of 49 out of 1,649. Lake Panasoffkee Elementary, who also worked hard to ensure that adequate yearly progress was made, had 68 percent of students scoring a satisfactory or higher on the Reading FCAT. This increased their ranking to 89 out of 1,649 Title I schools. In math, 74 percent of students scored satisfactory or higher, ranking them 47 and in science, 66 percent scored satisfactory or higher, ranking them 133 out of 1,649. Webster Elementary School had 69 percent of students scoring satisfactory or higher, ranking them 97 out of 1,648. From the 2011-12 school year to the 2012-13 school year, Webster students improved their math performance by 13 percent, ranking them 96 of all schools in Florida, 45 among all elementary schools in Florida, and 61 out of all Title I schools in Florida. Politics aside, it is nice to be recognized for the great job we do with our kids, said Eileen Goodson, principal of Webster Elementary School. We will display this in the front office for parents to see, she added. The district office recognizes the student learning gains and most notably, in spite of changes to the already rigorous achievement standards as measured by state academic assessments. Image and Winn Dixie helped with the drive, either providing a drop location for items or adding to the donations. Florida Sportsment was formed by local quail enthusiasts, who will focus their efforts on improving public-use habitat for bobwhite quail and getting youth involved in outdoor pursuits. Ive been hunting for as long as I can remember. Now, more people are looking for conservation to come back, said Marriage, an Illinois native who was raised in an upland hunting family and moved to Florida when he was attending high school. Quail Forevers fundraising model gives our chapter the opportunity to significantly impact habitat, youth and education in Central Florida. After reading about Quail Forever and Pheasants Forever, the organizations mission and model, and the No Child Left Indoors Initiative, we thought it fell right in line with what our community was after. What really appealed to us is our locally-raised funds are left up to us, the chapter, to manage and use to teach kids sportsmanship, conservation and outdoor ethics. We know what weve got in our backyard and through Quail Forevers model, we can get Florida where it needs to be in order to ensure our outdoor heritage continues. The chapters primary goal is to get more youth involved in the outdoors by hosting youth-oriented events, teaching sportsmanship, and showing them what its like to put the video games down, get outside and carry on our outdoor traditions. Florida is a critical state for quail restoration efforts in the Southeast, and Quail Forevers locally-empowering model will work perfectly for this group of motivated volunteers, reported Tim Caughran, Quail Forevers east regional manager. With the members concern for quail restoration and getting youth involved in the outdoors, I know the positive impacts made by the Florida Sportsmen Quail Forever Chapter will be felt by the whole community. The chapter hosted its first No Child Left Indoors Initiative event on Nov.r 16 at the Sumter County Fairgrounds in Webster. There, 49 youths, supervised by approximately 150 adults, learned about wildlife, shooting sports and outdoor stewardship. This event gave the children a chance to see some of the traditions our generation has been a part of, and they now will be the next generation to carry it forward, noted Marriage. The chapter is actively looking for volunteers, and those interested are encouraged to contact Gary Marriage at (352) 793-6814 or email Gary. Pheasants Forever, including its quail conservation division, Quail Forever, is the nations largest non-profit organization dedicated to upland habitat conservation. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever have more than 135,000 members and 745 local chapters across the United States and Canada. Chapters are empowered to determine how 100 percent of their locally raised conservation funds are spent, the only national conservation organization that operates through this truly grassroots structure. The colder weather may make us feel all cozy and comfy but it can be a very dangerous and harmful season for your pets without your diligence as their caregiver. Here are a few common sense tips to protect your pets during the holiday season provided by the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County: Keep pets inside when the temperature drops. Cats can get frostbite and should be kept indoors. Many dog breeds are highly susceptible to the cold. Feed your livestock extra forage during harsh weather and check that outdoor water lines to their troughs have not frozen. If you will be out of town for the holidays, make arrangements early for your pets. Make sure you provide your pet sitter or boarding facility all veterinary contact information and enough pet food and medications. Make sure antifreeze is inaccessible and clean up any spills immediately. Antifreeze has a sweet taste animals find irresistible, but can be deadly. If you suspect your pet has gotten into any potentially poisonous substance, call your veterinarian or local emergency veterinary hospital. (Its always a good tip to have this phone # in your directory ahead of time and know where they are located before an emergency occurs). Holiday Decorations and Foods: Hazards, such as tinsel, ribbons, chocolate, dough, water under the tree, mistletoe and light bulbs can be dangerous if accessed by your pets. Keep decorations out of reach. Pets risk electrocution, fire, poisoning or choking. Bones from holiday meals should not be offered as they can easily break and splinter into sharp pieces, causing blockage and/or perforation of the intestinal tract. A pet who has any bone lodged in its digestive system may not exhibit any symptoms such as appetite, depression, vomiting or diarrhea for one or two days.Holiday Festivities and Visitors: If your pet is not used to parties, noise, is food/toy aggressive, consider placing them in a quiet part of the house until the guests leave. Conversely, if your pet is a party animal and loves to mingle, be sure to ask your guests not to slip them table scraps, bones or treats. Make sure pets wear proper identification such as a tag with two phone numbers and it is micro-chipped. Also, county license tags greatly increase the chances of reuniting a lost pet with its owner. If you are travelling with your pets, transport them in a secure crate, wearing their ID. In the event of a vehicular accident, pets can easily escape the car and risk being injured, lost or causing another accident on the roadways.Give the Gift of Life: After the holidays have passed, consider adopting a friend for life as a gift to yourself and save a life from your local animal rescue or county shelter. Do not give any live animals as gifts to others. Allow them to choose their future pet and you donate the adoption fee as their gift. Let the new pet settle into a normal environment after the holiday commotion has subsided and the family routine has returned to normal. Quiet time and consistency to bond with their new family is very important for a new pet when everyone is not distracted from the holidays. Donate or volunteer to help save homeless pets. If you cannot adopt a pet, you can still make a difference to an animal in need at your local shelter. To help the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County, Inc. this holiday season and year-round, you can reach them at 352-793-9117, hsspca.org, PO Box 67 Lake Panasoffkee, FL 33538 or stop by at the shelter at 994 CR 529A in Lake Panasoffkee.PAGEA4SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, DECEMBER26, 2013 Holiday pet tipsBEYOND SUMTER The Voice of Sumter County since 1881The editorial opinion expressed in the Sumter County Times is the opinion of the news staff of this newspaper.PublisherGerry Mulligan Regional Manager John Provost Editor Bob Reichman204 E. Hosted by the Paths of Grace Church and coordinated by Darlene and Rev. Louis Lemley, the event drew vendors with a variety of goods and a crowd of shoppers. Crocheted caps, with friendly creature faces and without, were on display, as well as pillows, hair scrunchies and game day purses. Dressed in matching camouflage shirts, members of the 4-H Apple Pie club were on hand with a booth full of goodies and a chance to visit with the public. Even the Lemleys set up shop, with their homemade jellies and other items. Some of the vendors said the shoppers were lined up to get in, before the show opened and the day was a success. Tis the season ... The Florida Department of Education released preliminary information on graduation rates and letter grades for combination schools and regular high schools. Unlike elementary and middle schools, which are graded based on FCAT scores, assessment components only account for 50 percent. The rating is also based on graduation rate, student participation in accelerated coursework and college readiness. Despite these additional, rigorous requirements, the overall graduation rate in Sumters secondary schools surpasses the states average of 75.6percent. South Sumter High School is at 77.61percent, the Villages Charter School at 100percent and Wildwood Middle High School at 80.21-percent. Students attending combination schools and regular high schools also noticed changes to the way they were tested, which included: the new grading system on the FCAT 2.0, the FCAT Writing standard increasing from 3.0 in 2012 to 3.5 in 2013, End-of-Course exams required for Algebra 1, Geometry, and Biology (with new achievement levels for Biology 1 and Geometry), and the inclusion of test scores from English language learners and students with disabilities. In an effort to encourage continued student enrollment in accelerated coursework, Sumter offered a total of 21 STEM, Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses in 2012-13 (up from 16 courses last year) to 386 students (up from 339 students last year). In addition, 102 students earned an Industry Certification Credential. Despite many changes to the scoring criteria for combination schools and regular high schools, Sumter remains among the highest academically in the state. Out of 67 districts, Sumter joins 15 others receiving a grade of B and is ranked 13th in the State of Florida. The Villages Charter was recognized an A school, South Sumter High was recognized as a B school, and Wildwood Middle High was recognized as a C school. While we always strive to get better, we have made great progress over the years in the face of more challenging standards and continue to provide a quality education for all students, said Superintendent Richard A. Shirley. We are on the right track in preparing students to compete in a global economy, he added. Pictured from left to right are Alana, Katrina, and Emma. Over 780 fourth and fifth grade students around the state compete for 200 slots. Students who are selected for the Florida Music Educators Association All State Elementary Chorus achieve a unique honor for themselves and their schools. These three students will be busy learning their music over the next few weeks for the upcoming concert at the Tampa Convention Center on Jan. 10, 2014. Eustis races past South Sumter 71-33 Eustis High boys basketball coach Mike Bowe said he wanted his team to get off to a good start Wednesday, Dec. 18 in their game against South Sumter High. They did that. Eustis leaped to a 22-0 lead with 3:12 left in just the first quarter. Eustis so thoroughly owned the game that Eustis players began to show off with alleyoops and ginormous slam dunks. Eustis (8-3) then cruised to a 71-33 running clock victory over South Sumter (0-7). Eustiss K.C. Coleman led with 18 points. Antoine Crayton added 13 and Kiron Williams added 11 points. For South Sumter, Ladovick Gibson led with 13 points. The outcome of this game was never in question as South Sumter struggled to just hold on to the ball. The last couple of games, we played some big shootouts against some big time teams, said Bowe. We started off slow. Our goal was to get off to a quick start. We got off to 22-0. It was a team effort. We had a tough game Monday against Mount Dora Bible. We didnt want a big letdown. We only gave up 10 points in the second half. We had a chance to run our 2-3 zone. Usually, we mix up a couple of defenses. These kids (South Sumter) played awfully hard. South Sumter High head coach A.J. Bryant spent a long time talking to his team after the loss and he wasnt happy with the effort. Any time, you lose, you are disappointed, Bryant said. To give the effort we gave tonight, I wasnt very happy. We gave a better effort against the Villages. I dont think they are of the same caliber as the Villages. I see Eustis going far this year. Are they better than us at this point. Yes. Are they 35 points, I dont think so. Any time we play like that, we are going to get beat. I look out on the court. We have two freshmen and three sophomores. Every game, I see my younger kids getting better. It has to be a rebuilding year. I have two players last year who played. Its rebuilding every day. We are five practices in and have eight games. We get Christmas and thats going to be our best friend. So, the South Sumter High boys basketball team will have reason to rejoice this Christmas. After all, they dont play and wont have to rebuild on this holiday. Thats reason to celebrate. Wildwood Wildcats takes a 48-36 win It only seemed like it took a halftime for the Wildwood High girls basketball team to show up. The Wildcats (7-2) were losing 23-19 at the halftime against Lecanto High on Thursday, Dec. 12. The girls made nine turnovers in the first period and generally looked sloppy. It was just a bad half, said Briana Rushing. Rushing got better in the second half. She finished with 13 points, five rebounds, a block and a steal. Shayla McIntyre scored 12 points. Wildwood outscored their opponents 17-4 in the third quarter and then went on to win 48-36. Toni Zito scored six points and Kari Niblack scored five in the stretch. Wildwood High head girls basketball coach Richard Hampton wasnt real happy with the teams performance. We came out really flat, he said. We missed a lot of easy shots. A lot of turnovers. We didnt start playing until midway through the third period. We werent aggressive. We were dragging early in the game. Our offense feeds off our defense. The Wildcats finished with 16 turnovers while Lecanto had 19 miscues. DeAnna Mohering led the Panthers with 13 points. Dedra Magee added 10 points. PAGEA8SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, DECEMBER26, 2013 ANSWERS ANSWERS Is it or is it not the new millennium? Well, according to NASA scientists, the new millennium actually starts January 1, 2001. Thats because there is no year. Instead, the first millennium started January 1, 1. The first millennium ended 1,000 years later on December 31, 1000. The second millennium started January 1, 1001, and will end 1,000 years later on December 31, 2000. These dates are based on the calendar that is used around the world. It is called the Gregorian calendar. In the 500s or sixth century, a scholar named Dionysius Exiguus organized a table of dates of Easter, and he set up the Gregorian calendar. The beginning of this year will bring about many changes. For instance, ask an adult you know if you can look at his/her checkbook. If the date area in the upper right-hand corner of the check has 19_, that person is going to have to get new checks. However, more people are concerned about the Y2KYear Two 1000computer problems that may come. Many computer systems have only two digits when it comes to showing a year, like for 1948. Because of this, people are concerned that the for the year 2000 will be read as the year 1900 instead. Encouraged by her dad to be useful, Lucretia Coffin Mott worked hard so women could have rights, including the right to vote. Born in January 1793 in Nantucket, Massachusetts, Mott worked against slavery and alcohol, and she played a role in starting the womens suffrage right to votemovement. Along with rearing six children, Mott was a teacher. It was during her time as a teacher that Mott realized how unfair it was that women only made about half of what men made as teachers. At an 1840 meeting of the World Anti-Slavery Conference, Mott met Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Because they were women, they were not allowed to be involved in the conference. That led to the two women starting the womens rights movement in 1848. They wanted basic civil rights, like being able to vote and own property, for women, too. By 1880, the year Mott died, women could hold property in many states and could attend some colleges. However, Mott did not get to see her hard work in the suffrage movement pay off. Women were not allowed to vote until 1920. WORKING FORWOMENS RIGHTS

Caring for one or two stray cats quickly turned into caring for their kittens, which in just a little while they too were having kittens of their own. The cycle continued and now the family was feeding 25 cats! What to do?? The family called their friend, Sheri Evans. Sheri is a Board member of Florida DART. They were counting on her to help. Florida DART, formerly named Sumter DART, is the same non-profit organization, just with an updated name change. Evans gathered Florida DART cat traps and drove to Orlando where the family lived. After a brief education on trapping, handling, and care, the project was underway. Here comes the neuter commuter, joked Evans. Because the family was unable to transport a large number of cats at one time, Evans would pick up the trapped cats and transport them to a low cost spay/neuter clinic. 14 cats were in the first group trapped. When the surgeries were completed, Evans transported the cats back to the family that cared for the colony. Very recently, five more young cats were trapped and Evans once again transported them to the clinic and back to the colony after their surgery. This will continue until every cat in this colony is spayed or neutered. Very grateful for her help, the family agreed to pay for transport fuel and the medical expenses for the cats. Florida DART plans to investigate if municipalities have a need for a neuter commuter service that the organization can provide. Local government agencies or humane organizations working with people caring for cat colonies may need a way to transport large numbers of kitties at one time, and Florida DART has the vehicles to do just that. Florida DART has been assisting in the No More Homeless Pets project in Jacksonville, Fl. at numerous approved multi shelter pet adoption events. Our transport equipment makes the rounds to several local shelters and transports their pets to the fairgrounds where the huge weekend long pet adoption event is held. Hundreds of animals are adopted at each event. Florida DART is in the planning stages to expand the No More Homeless Pets adoption events to other cities in America. These huge adoption events help animals get out of shelters and into homes, saving the lives of thousands of animals. Because Florida DART has the equipment to transport numerous animals at one time, we are able to save large numbers of animals. Saving Lives With Every Ride is our motto.
