Brittany Nicole Bailey died Nov. 17 at 10:30 p.m. at the scene of the collision north of C.R. 462, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The wreck happened when a tractor trailer, driven by Alfonza Scott Singleton, 44, of Windmere, was traveling southbound on the interstate in the outside lane about a mile north of C.R. 462, the report states. Bailey was standing in the outside lane on the southbound side of the interstate near a disabled vehicle and in the path of the truck, the report states. Singleton was unable to observe Bailey standing in the outside lane of the unlighted highway. As a result, the front of the truck struck Bailey who sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene of the crash. Singleton was not injured nor was a passenger in the vehicle. Charges are pending the results of an investigation. Guests walked a Florida trail to find a Spanish explorer and a pioneer woman settled on her front porch. They chatted with a U.S. military soldier from 1838 and perused the encampment of a Seminole couple, as Florida folk music drifted through the trees and Hall of Fame artist Frank Thomas was honored. It was all part of the Florida folk festival hosted by Dade Battlefield Historic Park in Bushnell. Held on Saturday, Nov. 9, the festival was a first for the local area and drew participants from around the state. I think it went really well, said one of the event coordinators, Jim McAlister.. Just over 400 people attended the first-time festival. Everybody we talked to really had a good time. Kenneth Eugene Thomas BOBREICHMAN Editor Helping out by granting a holiday wish BRENDALOCKLEAR Staff Writer Every year, the City of Bushnell contributes to the holiday season by sponsoring a wish tree for needy younsters. This year, the holida season comes fast and city workers are hoping that donors will help grant a holiday wish for a needy youngster a little earlier than normal. Typically the city sends out notices about the porject in monthly utility bills, but this year because the dealine is early for returning gifts, the city notices wouldnt be received by city customers until four days before the deadline, said Susan Noell, city employee. The program is called Grant A Christmas Wish. The Childrens Home Society, who works with the Florida Department of Children and Families, provided the city with names of 60 Sumter County children in need. The childrens names and wishes are now available at City Hall. The due date for returning the new, unwrapped gifts is Dec. 6. The due date is so early because the gifts will still need to be wrapped and distributed to the children in time for Christmas. For more information please visit Bushnell City Hall or call 793-2591. The deadline for donors to contribute to the program is Friday, Dec. 6. Paramedic charged with child pornography A local paramedic was arrested last week on a dozen charges of child pornography and one count of lewd or lascivious molestation. Kenneth Eugene Thomas, 50, Bushnell, was arrested Wednesday, Nov. 13, after law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at his home and discovered child pornography on his computer. The investigation was conducted by the Sumter County Sheriffs Office Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit, after receiving a report from a Citrus County Sheriffs detective in October. Raiders continue wins Its that time of year again and the South Sumter High football team is rolling as usual. The Raiders beat Suwanee 31-12 Friday at Raiders Field in the Class 5A quarterfinal game. Next up is Citra North Marion. North Marion is known for its strong defense and beat Pasco High 17-7. North Marion and South Sumter will play Friday at 7:30 p.m. at North Marion. The winner of Friday nights game will play the winner of the Tarpon Springs-Lakewood game. South Sumter is now 11-0 and facing a major battle in its attempt to go 12-0. In last years game, they lost to Jacksonville Bolles on a last minute touchdown. The game was tough but enjoyable for the Raiders head coach. Great high school football game, a lot of intensity, said South Sumter coach Inman Sherman. Very aggressive. We hit a big play for a touchdown. We ran a counter with Anderson Faulk and he ran 80 yards. We set the stage. A lot of intense playoff type atmosphere. Raider quarterback Levi Sapp fired a 27-yard touchdown pass to Chase Kelly in the second quarter. The Raiders defense intercepted three passes to preserve the win. Suwanee finished with a 7-3 mark. North Marions reputation precedes it. I think they have a brutal defense, Sherman said. Everybody is good. You are running into teams that are very good football teams this time of year. The Offensive Player of the Week is offensive lineman James Daniel. He blocked 83 percent and had six pancake blocks. Sherman said he had to move to a different position due to an injury and he played really well. The Defensive Player of the Week was senior defensive back Xavier Storey. He had some great pass breakups in the flats. Next up is Citra North Marion. North Marion is known for its strong defense and beat Pasco High 17-7. North Marion and South Sumter will play Friday at 7:30 p.m. at North Marion. South Sumter downs Suwanee 31-12 LARRYBUGG Times Correspondent

If you asked Cat Reel why she participates in the annual Relay for Life program, her answer is all about family and friends. My mother chose giving birth to me over cancer treatment, she died before I ever got to know her. Her sister, who was my main caregiver, died of cancer three years later. My favorite uncle died of lung cancer when I was 12. And three of my friends are breast cancer survivors. One of my dearest friends is currently battling Vulva Cancer. I want a world where no child grows up not knowing their parent because cancer took them away. She wants a world in which she and all her friends, can grow old together. I relay with my buddies from Friends for Hope, Reel notes. Shari (Bare) has been not just a great team captain, but Relay Chair. Her whole family joins in, Reel said, noting that one member of Bares family is in the process of planning her wedding, but still participating. My family is mostly up north, but they are all very dedicated, and several of them relay annually. Reels favorite time in the overnight event is the lighting of the luminaria. Its a beautiful sight full of love and memories. But she is also deeply touched by the survivor lap. I love seeing so many people who have survived. It makes what we do, worth the effort. And then there are those moments filled with laughter. Reel said for her, its Mr. Relaywhat we wont do to raise money! She said she has been involved with Relay for Life for the past nine years, but even prior to that, she and her husband would donated to the entertainment for the event. I spent most of my life worried that I would develop cancer since my mom developed her cancer while I was in-utero. From the start of my life, cancer loomed in the background like the boogeyman. They had me doing blood tests and physicals every six months through puberty. As an adult, I decided not to let that threat rule my life and do whatever I could to help others. With all the advancements today, genetic testing and such, I know now that I did not inherit the cancer genes from her. But that does not stop my resolve to eliminate the threat for others. I got a tattoo of a pink ribbon and the Asian symbols for hope. It is my hope one day to have a child ask me What is that for? because they have never heard of Cancer. PAGEA2SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER21, 2013 tion over to us, said sheriffs Lt. Bobby Caruthers. From that, we were able to trace it to Thomas. Detectives previewing the material confirmed that Thomas was in possession of at least 120 pornographic files containing children, Caruthers said. The images depicted children that were clearly less than 18 years of age. During an interview with Thomas, he confessed to being the person responsible for obtaining the images from the Internet, Caruthers said. He additionally told detectives that he had groped a teenage girl, under 18 years of age, on one occasion. Thomas was charged with 12 counts of viewing sexual performance by a child and one count of lewd or lascivious molestation. He was placed in the county jail without bond. Additional charges are pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation, Caruthers said. ARREST continued from Page 1 Why I Relay Cat Reel participates in the annual Relay for Life program. POSTMASTER:SENDADDRESSCHANGESTO SUMTERCOUNTYTIMES. Coordinators and speakers at the event included Djuan Graham, Kathy Morrot, Richard Hampton, Austin Murray, Howard Smith, James Presley, Donna Palmer and Debra Barnes. Each year, Palmer and Barnes put the event together for the school and community. Wildwood hosts Veterans Day ceremony Kathy Morrot talked about the heartbreak and pride of a mother who watches her son join the United States military heartbreak in fear of the danger their child faces, but pride in a child who would take such a noble step. Djuan Graham spoke on fear and pride the fear of a man who lived through those dangers in the United States military the pride of a man who believes in his country. They were two of several people who spoke at Wildwood Middle High Schools annual Veterans Day ceremony. Other speakers included Richard Hampton and Austin Murray both with experience as part of a military family. Hampton was emotional as he looked back and shared his memories of family and lessons learned. Graham took guests back to 1776 and the men who had a vision for a nation and a hope for its people. He cited the importance of thinking about future generations, and of being a part of something bigger, adding that the great adventure needs to continue. Sharing his own life experiences, he recalled the day he made his pledge to defend the United States Navy and then sometime later, when he found himself in the engine room of a ship, as the crew tried to deal with a crisis. They were about five stories below the water line, in the hull and the temperature was 180 degrees. None of them had eaten or slept for about 36 hours. Our country preserves the sanctity of the ship, he said. For the crew, that meant continuing to try to solve the crisis knowing that the hatches were sealed knowing that they were cut off from the rest of the ship that if there was an explosion, there was no escape. Graham said the crew he worked with didnt panic; they simply worked to resolve the crisis. Sacrifice the future something bigger. He said efforts as Americans should be more than just a thankyou to veterans who have served, but to let actions, intent and purpose be to preserve the United States of America. He also reminded the crowd that freedom is not free. The event included the Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem, God Bless America, Taps and a reading of the American Soldier. Images of school family members who have served, or are serving in the military, flashed across the screen as the school band played a collection of military theme songs. Each year, teachers Donna Palmer and Debra Barnes coordinate the event, gathering speakers and creating the video presentation. BRENDALOCKLEAR Staff Writer Djuan Graham served as the guest speaker for the Wildwood Middle High School Veterans Day 2013 ceremony. Members of the American Legion Post 18 were on hand for the presentation of the colors. The veterans who performed the duty were Frank Boyatt, William Wallace, Kenny Tapp and Jim Shriver (shown). Kathy Morrot and her youngest son, Zachary. The two shared a hug at the Wildwood Veterans Day ceremony, after she finished speaking. Morrot was emotional as she spoke to crowd about her son Joshua, who is currently serving in the military. Zachary is also hoping for a military career Preston Murphy and Enrique Mirande were responsible for carrying the United States flag back, after the Veterans Day ceremony at Wildwood Middle High School. 000GNT0 1452 W. PAGEA4SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER21, 2013 Is it really holiday time? Maybe its because the majority of the time, the temperatures have been in the 80s. but it sure seems hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just a week away and before you know it, Christmas is here. About the only mental connection to the start of the holidays are the displays in many of the stores. Halloween decorations were competing with Christmas decorations as larger stores hurried to launch an early holiday season. But whether youre ready for them or not, the holidays are here. While tank tops and shorts may be fitting attire for this holiday season, communities and cities throughout Sumter County are revving up to celebrate with annual parades and events. In Lake Panasoffkee, the second annual Country Christmas Craft Show is on the agenda an event that is expected to draw 30plus vendors. Last years crafters had everything from woodworking and jewelry to boondoggles and homemade jam. All just in time for holiday shopping. In Wildwood, the Wildwood United Methodist Church is launching a unique event that is drawing a variety of participants. The church is sponsoring the first Wildwood Country Fair an event that is likely to become an annual affair. Looking for an old fashioned Florida Christmas experience? Check out Dade Park and Christmas on the Florida Frontier. Sgt. Tim Marsh at Sumter Correctional Institution has long taken a special interest in promoting blood drives at the prison, but the upcoming drive has a personal connection. LifeSouth blood mobile will be there from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., the blood drive will honor Sara Marsh Kerberg, the daughter of Sgt. Marsh and his wife Susan. Sara died Sept 9 following a fourand-a-half-year battle with inflammatory breast cancer. Tim Marsh, 63, says he first donated when he was 18, and has been an advocate for blood donation ever since. He said when Sara was first diagnosed she was given just two years to live. With the help of multiple chemotherapy and radiation treatments, surgeries and many, many transfusions, she gained more that two years to be with her husband Jason, daughters Meagan and Kayla, her twin sister Stephanie, brother Shawn and the rest of her family. "I realize the importance of it and I'm very, very adamant about," he said. Sara wasn't the first family member to get help from blood donors. Tim Marsh says his son Shawn was also helped as he twice battled cancer and he successfully received a bone marrow transplant more that six years ago. "My family and I appreciate all of the donors," he said "We hope the blood will always be there for anybody who needs it." Donors must be 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. A photo I.D. is also required. Sgt. Marsh, who has donated 112 times, plans to be there. The drive will be at Sumter Correctional Institution in the parking lot at 944 C.R. 476B, Bushnell. Sara Marsh Kerberg and family.

The coalition hopes that Norman Lee will bring the community together for this completely free event. As a lifelong entertainer, Norman Lee has raised the bar, bringing a faith based presentation to a population striving to find substance in their daily lives. He has toured across the country for many years. He has appeared on numerous local and national television shows and his music has national radio air play. Norman has opened up for such acts as George Jones, Kenny Rogers, The Temptations, Lou Rawls, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Travis Tritt, Loretta Lynn, Marty Stuart, Ray Price, Juice Newton, The Judds and LeAnn Rimes. Norman Lee the singer songwriter is a charismatic performer whose music appeals to all ages. His music combines praise and worship, contemporary Christian and gospel into one spirit filled sound. We believe there is a need in our community to come together in Christian unity, and to inform our residents of the various ministries and help agencies that are available in the Wildwood area, said WUMC Pastor Michael Beck. There is a lot of need in our community and we can do so much more together than we can alone. This is an opportunity to introduce God to those who dont know him. All churches, organizations and ministries are invited to come and set up a booth to dispense information, but must RSVP soon because space is limited. The booths are meant to be informative, but can also be an opportunity to offer prayer and build relationships. Organizations are responsible for providing their own tables and materials for booths. The public is encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating to enjoy the festivities. For more information, contact Michael Beck at 203-7258. Raider Garrett Cave ranks 51st in the United States and 11th in Florida, among righthanded pitchers. The Bushnell player is high caliber stuff, according to his coach, Mike Foote, and signed on with Florida International University Monday morning. Cave committed to play baseball for the Golden Panthers as he graduates South Sumter. The son of Sim and Gail Cave, hes played high school ball under Footes direction and travel ball under the leadership of Coach John Colacci. He is very dedicated he is a kid that wants the ball in his hand. He wants to start and he wants to finish the game, he doesnt want to come out, said Foote of Cave. Hes got a lot of guts, and is very composed, according to Foote. Hes pitched well every time I called on him. Hes a good kid, hes a team player. He wants the team to be successful, and he works hard to make it happen. Whats not to like about that? Foote asked with a laugh. I think hes going to have some professional scouts looking at him, Foote said. Cave already has a fastball, curve ball and slider. He could very well come up with some other pitches that they know, Foote said of his time in college ball. He explained that that the pitch is determined by a combination of things the length of the pitchers hand, size of their palm, how big their fingers are. Its all information thats available to coaches, but better used by college coaches in fine tuning a pitchers skills. They have more time to work players, than high school coaches, Foote said. He notes that pitching as a high school player at speeds in the mid to high 80s should catch your attention. But, If you throw in the 90s, youre talking major league caliber, he said. Of Cave, Foote said he believes, Youll see his fast ball pick up velocity, as the upcoming ball season moves forward. He believes Cave is professional ball caliber, noting his height and build. He said most pro ball players are about six-feet, three-inches or so and weigh between 210 and 240 pounds. Cave is six-feet, fourinches and weighs about 180 pounds. Foote said he believes that Cave has the ability to excel at the college level and with conditioning and fine tuning in college ball, hell have the ability to move on to the next level. Come watch him play, hes fun to watch, hes competitive, Foote said. Caves high school stats include a 0.45 ERA, 32 innings pitched, 38 strikeouts and 23 walks. He has a .115 opponent batting average. He has played on the Pro Showcase of the Florida Diamond Club Lakeland, Perfect Game Nationals in Minnesota, East Coast Pro in New York, Perfect Game Sunshine East Showcase highest velocity 93 miles per hour. He is a four-year varsity letterman and has played for three years with the Florida Hardballers out of Gainesville.PAGEA10SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER21, 2013 000GP2K AUTO LIFE HOME HEALTH NOT JUST FOR FARMERS HELPING YOU IS WHAT WE DO BEST M ARK A. BRENDALOCKLEAR Staff Writer Dixie County ends Wildwood football year 37-0 It naturally had to be Wildwoods fate to face the number one team in Class 1A in the opening round of the playoffs. So, in a rough year, the 2-9 Wildcats lost 37-0 to the 10-0 Dixie County High team Friday at Bruce Boyette Stadium. Wildwood High coach Jimbo Hale wanted those who suffered through a tough season to feel like they accomplished something. I think our goal was to finish as a team, Hale said. We had some bickering this year and had to cut some players. We fought to the end. Im proud of our guys. We have to change the culture here at Wildwood and it is not an overnight job. Dixie County ran for 280 yards on 41 carries and showed why they were MaxPreps number one team. Dixie County scored first when Kendell Copeland scored on a 35-yard run with 4:15 left in the first quarter. James Bowers ran for the point after. Dixie quarterback Aaron Thomas hit Duke Dawson for a 49-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds left in the first quarter. Dixie County kicker Dylan Reed booted a 32-yard field goal with 7:56 left in the second period. Copeland scored his second touchdown when he ran four yards with 4:28 left in the first half. Bear quarterback Shaquille Mitchem took off on a scramble and scored on a 39-yard run with 54 seconds left in the half. Dixie County had 19 carries for 167 yards at the half. Dixie County led 30-0 at the half. The Bears scored again when Mitchem passed 10 yards to Brandon Land for a score with 7:48 left in the third quarter. The Dixie County team impressed a Wildcat assistant coach. They are explosive on offense, said Wildwood assistant coach Tim Simpson. They are very athletic. LARRYBUGG Times Correspondent

PAGEA12SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER21, 2013 FROM THE GROUND UP Question:I want to decorate with poinsettias during the holiday season, but I have heard that they are poisonous. Is that true? Answer:Research done by the National Poison Control Center in Atlanta and the American Medical Association found that a 50# child could eat 500 leaves without a fatal effect. This is also supported by POISINDEX, the primary resource center for poison control centers, Ohio State University, Colorado State University, etc. Also, this is a euphorbia so it has a milky sap that can be irritating to the skin of people who have an allergy to latex. Regardless, small children, kittens and puppies should be kept away from them. Never let children or pets eat your plants. If you really want a large selection of poinsettias, you must go to the annual Gator Poinsettia Sale in Gainesville at the University of Florida, which will be held on December 5th & 6th; you will see colors you have never seen before including an orange poinsettia. For more information and directions, go to http://www.gatorpoinsettia.com/ Question:My hibiscus has really gotten leggy; can I prune it now?Answer:November is really too late to prune a hibiscus. Heavy pruning is best done in early spring. If you do it now you could chance new growth being damaged by frost. Prune it back heavily with shears that have been sterilized with 70% rubbing alcohol in the spring. If you prune heavily after spring, you will delay and reduce your blooms. Hibiscus blooms on new wood. Light periodic pruning is best for hibiscus during the growing season. And be sure to fertilize it 4 times yearly during the growing season for peak performance.Question:When should I put my humming bird feeders out and how long should I leave them out?Answer:Hummers! One of my favorite birds! Most of the year we see our rubythroated hummingbird but during the winter we get a few glimpses of the black-chinned hummer and the rufous hummer. Put your feeders out in February and it wouldnt hurt to leave them out up until mid-December. But you can keep them out all year just to make sure the fall migrating stragglers or the early birds have access to the nectar. And remember that the babies actually migrate after the adults so its nice to have food to help them along their way. But in addition to feeders, try using plants that hummers like to feed on; this publication by the University of Florida has several suggestions http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/uw059 To submit questions to Ask the Master Gardener please call 352-793-2728, Ext. 229 or email us at plantclinic@aol.com Photos courtesy of the University of Florida. Critter chatter Thanksgiving Pet Safety TipsThanksgiving is a time to reflect and be thankful for the many blessings in our lives. Family and friends will gather on Thanksgiving Day to enjoy holiday meals and tasty goodies together. During the festivities, with an over abundance of food to share, we may be inclined to overindulge the family pet. Although we want to include our furry family members in the holiday activities, feasting on too many table scraps and treats can lead to serious digestive problems. To assure a happy and healthy Thanksgiving for both human and nonhuman family members, North Shore Animal League, Americas largest no kill animal rescue and adoption organization, has put the following pet safety tips on their website: 1. Fatty Foods: Too many fatty, rich, or unfamiliar foods can give your pet pancreatitis or gastroenteritis; two medical conditions that can be very painful and even life-threatening. 2. Diet and Exercise: Maintain your pets regular meal and exercise schedule and avoid too many holiday leftovers. A disruption in his dietary routine can cause stomach upset, diarrhea and/or vomiting. 3. Bones: Make no bones about it. Certain bones can lacerate or obstruct your pets insides. Save the bones for the broth not your dog. 4. Onions: Onions and onion powder, widely found in stuffing and used as a general seasoning, will destroy your dog or cats red blood cells, which can lead to anemia. 5. Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins contain a toxin that can cause kidney damage to both dogs and cats. 6. Chocolate: Chocolate can actually be fatal to your dog or cat; so all those sweets must be kept well out of reach. 7. Food Wrappings: Aluminum foil, wax paper and other food wrappings can cause intestinal obstruction. Make sure to place these items securely in the garbage. 8. Fresh Water: Make sure your pet always has fresh water. When there are more people in the house, theres more chance to bump into the water bowl leaving your pet dry. 9. Quiet Time: Make sure your pet has a quiet retreat should the holiday festivities be too much for him. Watch his behavior to make sure he is not stressed. 10. Garbage: Keep an eye on the garbage and keep it securely fastened! If your dog gets into it, he may think hes hit the jackpot, but all hell be winning is health problems from something as simple as gastric disturbance, vomiting and diarrhea to the worst-case scenario death. I hope everyone has a very happy Thanksgiving. And to all the four legged blessings in your home, I wish a safe and healthy Thanksgiving to them too.
