Llanes said her father, Hernandez, was in the United States Marine Corps for 12 years, serving in both Korea and Vietnam. Hernandez died only three weeks ago. Three fatal collisions were reported this past week in Sumter County. In the most recent, a Bushnell man died Monday in a wreck west of the city. Thomas Mitchell, 78, was riding a HarleyDavidson motorcycle eastbound on County Road 476W at 12:52 p.m. when the collision happened, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. A Honda Odyssey was traveling eastbound on C.R. 476W when driver Leanne Longo, 53, Bushnell, slowed and was negotiating a right turn onto C.R. 614, according to the report. Mitchell failed to see the other vehicle slowing which resulted in the front left of the motorcycle he was driving colliding with the right rear bumper of the Honda, the report states. After impact, the motorcycle rotated counter-clockwise and overturned. Mitchell was thrown off the motorcycle and both Mitchell and the motorcycle traveled southeast onto the grass shoulder of the roadway. The Honda traveled east onto the south shoulder of C.R. 476W before coming to final rest facing east. Mitchell was taken to Citrus Memorial hospital where he later died, the report states. Mitchell was wearing a helmet. A second motorcycle crash claimed the life of a resident of The VilHONORING VETERANS An estimated crowd of about 3,000 people attended the Florida National Cemetery Veterans Day ceremony, in Bushnell. Among the crowd was an 89-year-old veteran a medic from the Screaming Eagles 101st Airborne who served in France on D-Day. There was a mother and daughter, sharing a hug and sharing tears, grieving over the loss of husband and father. And then, there were the mothers those who honor their sons in service and those who have lost their sons in battle the Gold Star Mothers. Flags and hundreds of headstones served as the backdrop for thousands of people, dressed in everything from red, white and blue to military uniform. The crowd watched as Ye Mystic Air Krewe performed a flyover and listened as The National Anthem, Amazing Grace, and Taps were performed, from soloist to bagpipes to bugle. We just had an awesome speaker this year, said program support assistant Joyce Loftin. Retired United States Air Force, Loftin had 26 years in and was able to relate to Retired United States Marine Corps Col. Robert D. Crawford, who served as the Photos by BRENDA LOCKLEARFlags flank the crowd gathered for the Veterans Day ceremony at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, while the headstones of hundreds of veterans are the backdrop. BOBREICHMAN Editor Suspected bank robbers nabbed BRENDALOCKLEAR Staff Writer See WRECKS,Page 2 After weeks of surveillance and tracking the movements of a Tampa couple, FBI investigators filed a criminal complaint and arrested Immanuel and Cara Williams for more than a dozen bank robberies in Central Florida including the robbery of the Center State Bank in Bushnell, according to the probable cause affidavit. Acting United States Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III announced that the two suspects, both 28, have been arrested and charged in a criminal complaint with conspiracy to obstruct, delay, or affect commerce by robbery and conspiracy to commit bank robbery. If convicted on all charges, each faces a maximum penalty of twenty years in federal prison. The investigation involves a series of bank robberies that occurred in the Middle District of Florida between Dec. 2012 and Oct. 2013 and two banks in Alabama. The complaint alleges that to carry out the robberies, both have worn disguises and used notes demanding money from the banks. The disguises and robbery notes in all the cases were similar and investigators used eyewitness information, video surveillance and still images, in preparing for the arrests. They pulled images from bank and nearby business surveillance cameras, as well as Florida Department of Transportation cameras. The investigation led to two different suspected getaway vehicles a black Mercedes Benz sports utility and a white Ford Mustang. Authorites ran the license plate from a black Mercedes in the turnpike photo and discovered it belonged to Cara Williams. A white Ford Mustang is also registered to Mrs. Williams. The case has been under investigation by nine different law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the couple has been under surveillance for at least two months, since authorities began gathering information from an Auburndale bank robbery on Aug. 28. Once they identified that a Mercedes Benz was owned by Cara Williams, they began tracking the couples movements. They also tracked the couples historical whereabouts, utilizing various technology, including cellular telephone records. In all the Florida robberies, it was a male suspect that reportedly entered the banks and made the demand, using an index card with capitalized or block letters. The suspect was described as a black male approximately six-feet tall and 200 pounds, wearing a hat and/or wig and long sleeves, sometimes gloves. In at least two of the robberies, the suspect reportedly showed that he had a gun on his person and in some of the others, indicated that he had a gun. More than $57,000 was taken in the dozen plus robberies. A bond hearing is set for Cara Williams on Nov. 14. Immanuel Williams is being held without bond. PAGEA2SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER14, 2013 lages on Sunday morning. Donald Wayne De Villez, 68, died about an hour after he was transported to Leesburg Regional Medical Center for critical injuries received in the crash, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. He was not wearing a helmet. De Villez was traveling on a Yamaha Star motorcycle southeast on County Road 143 at County Road 159 at 12:02 a.m. when he failure to negotiate a curve in the roadway, the preliminary report states. The motorcycle traveled onto the south shoulder of the roadway where it rotated counterclockwise and overturned. De Villez was thrown from the vehicle, the report states. In the third accident, a Winter Haven man was fatally injured last week when he failed to stop at a stop sign east of Bushnell and was struck by a tractor trailer. Micael Bernard Douglas Wagner, 33, was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center where he later died from injuries, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. Wagner, driving a Chrysler PT Cruiser, was traveling east on C.R. 476 E. when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of S.R. 471, according to the report. The Cruiser entered the intersection and traveled into the path of the tractor trailer which was traveling south on S.R. 471. The accident happened at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, east of Bushnell. The front end of the Cruiser collided with the right side of the truck, driven by Kevin McAllister, 53, of Georgia, the report states. South Sumter Highs football team finished up matters by winning their 10th game of the season. The Raiders finished 10-0 and the winner of Class 5A-District 6. They have a regular season winning streak of 23 in a row. They finished the job by beating Leesburg 30-10. The district title allows South Sumter to host Live Oak Suwanee Friday in a regional quarterfinal game. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Raiders Field. The winner moves on to the regional semifinal Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. The challenge is for the 2013 to match or exceed the 11-1 record of the 2012 team. Last years season came to an end with a last minute loss to perennial powerhouse Jacksonville Bolles. The undefeated season is becoming the gold standard for the Raiders. Leesburg held the Raiders under 34 points, an accomplishment in itself. For the eighth time this year, the Raiders held an opponent under 20 points. One of the Raiders hit an impressive milestone. Raider running back Anderson Faulk ran for 90 yards to go over the magical 1,000-yard mark. We expect him to, said Inman Sherman. He stays healthy. J.T. is over 800 yards. It compliments our offensive line. J.T. Taylor caught a 23yard scoring pass from Reace Kinley. Kinley was playing for injured starting quarterback Levi Sapp. Kinley completed six of nine passing attempts for 94 yards and two touchowns. Taylor gained 91 yards passing and ran for 103 yards. He was the Offensive Player of the Week. He is a catalyst for our offense, the coach said. He finds a way to keep our offense going. Brandon Anderson was Defensive Player of the Game. He had a career game for him. His coach said he provided leadership. He is a defensive back and had a lot of tackles. He was very instrumental in making sure we played a great defensive game, Sherman said. This makes two 10-0 regular season teams in a row for the Raiders and the coach sees some of the same qualities in both the 2012 and 2013 teams. It was a great season for them, Sherman said. It speaks to the unselfishness of this team. This team has the same work ethic as last years team. They like each other. They have loyalty. The fans will have to pay just a bit more for tickets for the 7:30 p.m. Friday game. Its the first round of the state playoffs, Sherman said. Tickets are $8 and set by the FHSAA. Suwannee is 7-2 and is very good. North Marion and Pasco will play in the other regional game. South Sumter may or may not host the next game depending on who wins or loses in both games. PAGEA4SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER14, 2013 Letters to the editor Praise for the RaidersI am writing this tribute to our South Sumter High School varsity football coaches and team. They will be entering the regional football tournament, starting this Friday. Head Coach Inman Sherman and his team of coaches have worked so hard to bring the whole team to where they are today. One thing is, that they have respect for all of their players and care for them as if they were one big family. Our fans are some of the greatest people. They stand behind their team and coaches. Always, encouraging and helping out when needed. My husband and I are among those fans and we feel very fortunate to be able to attend the games. We hope lots of fans will turn for the regional this Friday, for the first game. The support will be greatly appreciated. Go Raiders! We are behind you, all the way. Sincerely, Shirley Johnson A day for veteransThe Florida International Teaching Zoo staff, students, and animals are opening our doors to all American Armed Forces personnel. All active duty and retired armed forces veterans can enjoy a free guided tour from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16. Mark Wilson, DVM Teaching Zoo director stated. All Armed Forces personnel (active duty and retired) will receive free admission to the Teaching Zoo. We suggest that loved ones donate $6 toward zoo admission.(Ages six and up). Personal guided tours of the Teaching Zoos tigers, hyenas, monkeys, roos, birds, and all the rare animals will be given by our Zoo Students. The Florida International Teaching Zoo is located at 4258 west 52nd Terrace (just off CR-317) in rustic Bushnell.God Bless the USA and our Armed Forces Family Life Care a home care company that provides services locally would like to acknowledge all care givers who give of themselves every day to care for others. Two out of every five American adults are caring for a loved one. With the increasing number of Americans suffering from Alzheimers disease, this need for full-time care is compounding. One of the greatest needs for individuals providing care to their loved one is respite care. Respite care is shortterm, temporary relief to those who are caring for family members. Family Life Cares founder Brenda Dunn knows this personally. Dunn cared for her husband who has Alzheimers disease at home for 10 years. It is essential that family caregivers obtain frequent and regular breaks from providing care in order for them to be able to take care of their own health and wellbeing. Every community has a number of resources for help in caring for your loved one and caring for yourself! If you need help in starting your search, call your local Family Life Care office. Recently, someone passed on a bit of gossip to me. This person said, according to reliable sources, a certain person at a certain local church did something that, while doesnt technically violate the letter of any of the Ten Commandments, is unseemly for, as this person put it, church people. That same week my pastor said someone came to him and informed him that a certain person who was attending the pastors class with the intent of joining the church was, indeed, not a very nice person, maybe even a despicable one. I dont want people like that in my church, the person told the pastor. That said, heres the question: Just who are church people who should they be? I think theres a huge misconception about church people, and it stems from the messages either preached from the pulpits or messages endemic to the church culture itself. If you believe that to be a member of a church you need to practice a certain moral code, follow a set of dos and donts, then you believe that being a Christian means being a good person. Your church attendance is evidence of your goodness. Really good Christians are in church every time the doors are open, as some believe. Some believe that church is a place to learn the rules and a sermon is the pastors tool to whip the people into shape, get them to stop sinning and act Christianly. In some churches, if you dont leave a Sunday service feeling simultaneously guilty and resolved to do better throughout the coming week so you can feel like you deserve your spot at the next Sundays service, then the pastor didnt do his job. In churches where the emphasis is on morality and behavior, people dont feel free to share their personal sin struggles with one another or with their pastor. Churches like that breed insecure, guilty, judgmental people who take notes on others. Non-church people know this and dont want any part of it, and who can blame them? Who wants to be part of a group with standards no one can meet and maintain, where its members constantly feel guilty and discouraged? But theres another kind of church, a church where not very nice, even despicable, people are welcome. This is the church that believes being a Christian and being a member means a person wholeheartedly embraces his or her identity as a sinner and who knows that his or her standing with God is based solely on Christs sacrificial atoning death on the Cross. The cry of this church is: Sola fide! Sola Gratia! Solo Christo! and Sola Deo Gloria! (Faith alone, grace alone, Christ alone and glory to God alone; the remaining sola, Sola scriptura, is the Word of God alone.) In churches where the emphasis is on the grace of God, people are free to be who they are sinners in process. Church becomes a place of safety and hope, where the message from the pulpit is not Heres the standard, here are the rules follow them to keep yourself in Gods grace, but Heres the standard, here are the rules you cant keep them, but Jesus did and he gives you the credit for it. Because of that, rest in that. When thats the message, an amazing thing happens. Church people start changing. Theyre not afraid to bring their sin to church with them because they dont have a good reputation to live up to and maintain. Its not that we glory in our sin, but in the God whose grace covers it all, past, present and future. So, as the people surrounding you in the pews readily admit that they are just as sinflawed as you, together you remind each other that Gods grace will help you all get better and you do get better, because you feel safe and secure. Its as we often sing, For God the just is satisfied, to look on him (Jesus) and pardon me. Its the pardon that compels us toward change and not guilt or the threat of punishment. Dear friends, church was never intended to be a showcase for good people, but a place of refuge for those who know theyre not. Welcome, sinner come on in! SECO Director of Corporate Communications Barry Bowman said, We get member input every day via letters, emails, Facebook comments, and telephone calls. In addition, every year we do a more comprehensive telephone survey of many of our members to get a more in-depth look at how they feel about overall co-op performance. Our members are part owners of our cooperative and their opinions on such things as service reliability and customer service count. He noted that this year SECO members will be surveyed this month and into early December. Member thoughts and opinions are very important to us and ultimately help guide coop operations. Thats why the annual telephone survey is a high priority. In general, SECO gets high marks from the members during these surveys. In fact, a series of questions in the survey allows our co-op to be ranked against all other types of electric utilities in the nation on the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Since beginning to use the ACSI to make this comparison, SECOs scores from member/customers on satisfaction are amongst the highest of any comparable utility in the United States, continued Bowman. Our whole focus is to deliver the most reliable, lowest cost electricity possible and the best customer service we can to the overall membership. PAGEA10SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER14, 2013 Parents and teachers will always try to take advantage of teachable moments, and many lessons can be learned by helping animals in need. Kids and animals just go together, like peanut butter and jelly, so why not teach kids responsibility, compassion, and empathy by helping your local Humane Society. There are many ways children can contribute to the welfare of animals. Even if a child is too young to volunteer, there is still a lot of cool stuff to do. A visit to your local Humane Society/SPCA will bring to life the purpose of their contributions when the kids meet adorable dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens at the shelter. Kids will enjoy filling a pail with fun things like dog or cat toys and treats. Children will learn that their efforts have made animals at the shelter happy. And the animals will be amused for hours with their buckets full of goodies. Young guests attending a party or special occasion can be asked to bring a bag or can of dog or cat food that will be donated to the local shelter. Shelters always appreciate donated pet food. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts can earn merit badges by helping animals. Troop leaders can contact the local Humane Society and ask how they can help. Kids in the local 4H club can volunteer to give dog baths or have car washes to support homeless animals. Teens can start a Junior Humane Club, and have monthly food, treat, and toy drives all to help the shelter animals. Plan one day a week to help walk shelter dogs or spend time playing with shelter kitties. A few years ago, one teacher collected pennies, nickels, and dimes that all added up to helping a shelter dog get the surgery he needed. The kids got to meet the dog they helped and had their picture taken together, and it made a great story for the local news. Kids and teens have the power to impact their community in a positive way. It is up to parents and teachers to guide them. And how cool is it, for those that love animals, to know they can make life better for local shelter animals. The Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County is located in Lake Pansoffkee. They help hundreds of homeless animals, giving them shelter and medical care, and then find them loving homes. Lets all chip in and lend a helping hand. Sherman is a sweet 4 year old male Border Collie mix that gets along well with other dogs and is very social with people. Sherman is heartworm positive and has now received his treatments and is well on his way to recovery. Neutered, current on his vaccines and micro chipped he is ready for his new forever home. They say life imitates art. Or, in this case, pageant imitates cartoon teacher imitates teacher students imitate their favorite characters. And art? Its apparently, at South Sumter, its an imitation of life. That was the story during this years annual Mr. South Sumter Pageant, hosted in the school gym, as the student-written mystery unfolded with a focus on childhood favorite Scooby Doo. The pageant contest was based on a fictional talent contest. Real life teacher and psychology sponsor, Danielle Stewart was in charge of the program fictional Ms. Frizzle was in charge of the fictional school talent show. Real life South Sumter student Tristan Collop, who loved to watch Scooby Doo, played one of his favorite characters on the show. After all, he has facial hair and coloring similar to the fictional Shaggy, so why not. That was my favorite cartoon. I still have some of my Scooby stuff, he said, adding that he was actually the one who made the suggestion they use a Scooby theme. And so it goes. Collop said they did some script and some improvisation and his favorite part? When Scooby Doo ran and jumped into my arms, he said. Exactly what the fictional Scooby constantly did to the fictional Shaggy. South Sumters Scooby was played by Aquiles Gamez in a Scooby costume. Stewart said the real life students get to toss out ideas and then vote on the choices when it comes to the annual pageant theme. The students then put together their talent and skit portion of the event. This years premise was based on a mystery that occurred at the fictional high school during a talent show. When Ms. Fizzle was in the middle of a panic attack, the Mystery, Inc. team members (who just happened to be in the audience), jumped up to offer their services. The fictional talent show was then woven with the mystery. The students who played the Mystery, Inc. gang, actually wrote the skit, Stewart said, noting that many of them were Scooby Doo fans. This one was voted in easily, she said. The annual pageant is a fundraiser for the students and will pay for field trip tickets. The psychology students spend a lot of volunteer time in Sumter County, from serving at community events to working in classrooms at the elementary schools. We raised a little over $850, Stewart said, noting that this years numbers were a little lower, but she attributes it to the Friday night date. The pageant is typically on a Thursday, but this year, the gym wasnt available, she said. I think the audience enjoyed the show, Stewart said, adding that some of the quips in the skit included good-humored pokes at the school administration and drawing laughs from them. Collop, who has always wanted to be an actor, said, It was kind of like my first play. It was pretty fun. As soon as they discussed the possibility of a Scooby Doo theme, They kind of all looked at me, he said.PAGEA12SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER14, 2013 Shaggy and Scooby really? Why I Relay Lisa Perryman Lisa Perryman is from Lake Panasoffkee and has spent the last several years giving to and in service to, the Relay for Life. When I was at home recuperating from surgery in January, 2002, just a couple months after my cancer diagnosis, a co-worker called me and asked me to be on her Relay for Life team, as a cancer survivor. That was the first year they held the Relay for Life of Sumter County in Sumterville, she said. The event is held behind the college in Sumterville, before they even had a track. The survivor ceremony and first lap was such an emotional experience for me and I was proud to have my husband/caregiver make that walk with me. We had so much fun, while we raised money for such a good cause. At that time, one of my sisters had fought and beat breast cancer and I am happy to say my surgery was successful in making me a cancer survivor. Ive had too many family and friends who have had to hear the words you have cancer, since that first Relay. Because of ACS, treatments have helped many of them beat it but unfortunately, we are still losing too many. Last year, my husband again walked with me, only this time, as a survivor and I as his caregiver. I rejoice in the fact that God has allowed us to continue this fight but mourn the recent deaths of a sister to kidney cancer and a cousin, along with many others who have lost their battle in past years. The Perrymans relay for SECO Energy and Lisa serves as captain. As for the part of Relay she enjoys most, Perryman said, Thats a tough one, because there are so many parts to relay that I enjoy its hard to pick one. From the planning in the months prior to the event (the excitement building up to the event); setting up (even though its a lot of work its always fun); opening ceremony, survivor ceremony and survivor/caregiver lap (were finally getting this party started, after months of anticipation and what an emotional start); the games/music/contests/them e laps, etc. (weve had some great entertainment chairs/committees); Luminaria Ceremony (another emotional time, where we get to honor those who have survived, support those who are fighting and remember those weve lost); campsite judging (more anticipation to find out who won) and finally the closing ceremony (we finally made it to the end). Oh and dont forget the wrap-up party for more awards and anticipation to find out who won the Spirit Trophy! Perryman also has the funniest memories, which include The Mister Relay contest and the year our team performed Sister Act. Yes, I was a nun! One of the most touching moments for Perryman was last years balloon release. It was the first year that we had it and it was amazing! Shes been involved every year since, except 2008. From the first time I participated, I was hooked. And Im a little competitive in trying to win the spirit trophy, she said with a laugh. There are so many ways to participate in Relay. It is an overnight event, but you dont have to be there from beginning to end. The money raised not only helps fund research to help fight cancer, but also helps fund local programs to help cancer patients in our community.PAGEA16SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER14, 2013 SAR003086TO PLACE A CLASSIFIED AD, CALL TOLL FREE 1-877-676-1403 MONDAY-FRIDAY 8:00 AM-5 PM (DEADLINE 11:00 AM TUESDAY) CLASSIFIEDSCANCELLATIONSAdvertisements may be canceled as soon as results are obtained.
