Somebody had to play South Sumter Highs football team for its homecoming. Weeki Wachee High happened to be the unfortunate victim in that deal. The Raiders improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in Class 5-District 6 as they put on a show Friday night at Raiders Field. South Sumter won 63-20. Now, the Raiders get a week off before finishing off the season hosting Leesburg at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 8. Then, the playoffs start. Friday, J.T. Taylor ran for 142 yards on 10 carries. He also had touchdown runs of one and 72 yards. The Raiders offensive line mowed down Weeki Wachee and the backs ran for 445 yards on 48 carries. Quarterback Levi Sapp completed nine of 13 passes for 165 yards. He also threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Anderson Faulk and hit Deon Williams for a 55-yard TD pass. Faulk spent plenty of quality time in the end zone. He scored three TDs including runs of 12 and 22 yards. Ladovick Gibson scored on a one-yard run as did P.J. Brown. The Raiders offense had 610 total offense yards and no turnovers. The Raiders also had no punts for the evening. Weeki Wachees Tyler Wiley ran two kickoffs back 90 yards for scores. South Sumter High head coach Inman Sherman cant complain about his teams play. We are real pleased with where they are at, Sherman said. We have a more difficult season coming up in the playoffs. We have to up the level of play to playoffs. We are treating our game with Leesburg as a playoff. There is a three-way tie between North Marion, Gainesville Eastside and Live Oak Suwannee so South Sumter doesnt know who they will face in the playoffs. Offensive Player of the Game was Keil Yurich. He plays offensive line. Defensive guy Joey Mohler had some tackles. The Raiders have a bye this week. They finish the regular season Nov. 8 hosting Leesburg. Playoffs start Nov. 15. Celebrating 100 Peggy Olivia Davis, is a Royal treasure literally. She has collected years of history and life, being a part of the Royal community. She is oldest sister to six younger women who have had a strong impact on the community and Peggy Olivia is among those unique people who can claim they have lived an entire century. It was Oct. 3, 1913 when Mitchell D. and Ida Mae Steele learned that their third child was a cute little girl. Overjoyed, they named her Peggy Olivia and she was a treasure to her parents not only as one of their three children, but as their first girl. She had two older brothers, but it was was after her birth, that the Steeles welcomed six more children all girls. Peggy Olivia celebrated 100 years with her family and friends, including her siblings, on Friday, Oct. 4. At the time she was born, her family lived in her fathers hometown of Citra, but they eventually moved to Royal, her mothers hometown. The Royal community was formed in 1865 by former slaves from the Old Green Plantation. Basham received his doctorate of education from the University of Florida, along with a certificate in Community College Executive Leadership. I am very excited to be able to bring my entrepreneurial skills and experiences in building successful programs in computer networking, education, leadership, manufacturing, and drafting to Lake Sumter State College, said Basham. To me, this is the perfect situation for using my talents to connect training from LSSC to business and industry. Basham will lead this innovative partnership that unites public and private sectors in support of workforce development to link Sumter County residents to training and education opportunities that are vital to meeting the employment needs of the county. We are indeed fortunate to find a person like Dr. Basham with his strong blend of experience in workforce development and higher education. Matt has a unique talent for listening in order to understand needs and then building programs that respond to those needs, said Dr. Charles Mojock, LSSC president. He is a positive, can-do guy that the community will enjoy working with and getting to know. For more information about LSSCs Sumter County Partnership for Workforce Innovation and Education, visit LSSC.edu. Making the partnership come togetherLake-Sumter State College (LSSC) has played a lead role in forming the Sumter County Partnership for Workforce Innovation and Education that addresses workforce training needs and economic development in Sumter County. This innovative partnership brings together public and private sectors in support of critical workforce development to link employable Sumter County residents to training and education opportunities that are vital to meeting the employment needs of the county. Partners include: Lake-Sumter State College, Sumter County School Board, Sumter County Sheriffs Office, Sumter County Commission, Central Florida Health Alliance, The Villages Charter School District, University of South Florida College of Public Health, University of Central Florida, Combat Veterans to Careers, Inc. and Workforce Central Florida. Lake-Sumter State Colleges Board of Trustees is committed to the Sumter County Partnership for Workforce Innovation and Education and contributed $500,000 of board reserves as an initial investment. In addition, the Florida Legislature awarded $1M to further fund the project. This partnership meets not only the Governors goal for more extensive and intensive workforce training done flexibly and cost-effectively but is truly a community approach to economic development, said Dr. Charles R. Mojock, LSSC president. Key proponent, Rep. Marlene OToole, who was instrumental in securing legislative support for the project, is excited about the partnership and considers it an exceptional opportunity to bring workforce training to Sumter County. This is a win-win opportunity for everyone residents, business owners and the community at large, said Representative OToole. Planned programs in healthcare and public health, public safety, residential and commercial trades will meet the growing employment needs of the area. With much of the countys employment needs driven by growth of The Villages, the predominantly retired population depends on Sumter and surrounding counties for its workforce. In turn, employable Sumter residents will need access to postsecondary training to acquire the skills needed for work in these high demand areas. The programsBased on input from residents and employers, LSSC will be offering the following programs in Sumter County: 911 Dispatch TelecommunicationsA 232-hour program leads to an industry certification as a dispatcher in the Public Safety areas of health, law enforcement, and fire. This training is offered in partnership with Sumter County Sheriffs Office, Rural Metro EMS and Sumter County Fire Department. Public HealthA 2+2 program between LSSC and the University of South Florida (USF). LSSC will offer three introductory Public Health Courses as part of an Associate in Arts degree that will be transferable into the USFs College of Public Health. Classes will be offered at LSSCs Sumter Campus in the fall of 2013 and spring of 2014. Plans are being made to also incorporate public health coursework into Sumter County high school academies to form a 2+2+2 career ladder. PAGEA4SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, OCTOBER31, 2013 Holiday precautions Ghosts and goblins may not be the true threat to trick-or-treaters during this years Halloween festivities. Possibly tainted candy, use of costume materials, and food borne illnesses may really be the hazards. As such, the health professionals at the Florida/USVI Poison Information Center Jacksonville can be an important resource for parents at this time of year. The Poison Center Help Line, 1-800-222-1222 is available 24 hours a day when these questions come up. Halloween can be a time for fun and adventure for children, but we need to remain diligent that there are still some risks associated with Halloween activities such as those described below or for small children accidentally mistaking medications for treats. Children under the age of six continue to be the number one victim of accidental poisonings. Last year, the Florida/USVI Poison Information Center Jacksonville received almost 36,000 human exposure calls, nearly 17,000 which involved accidental ingestions in children under the age of six. Between Oct. 29 and Nov. 2 last year the Help Line received almost 700 calls. On Oct. 31 alone, there were 135 calls for help and advice to the Poison Center Help Line. This is also the time of the year known for fall festivals, carnivals and fairs. One of the more fun aspects of these events is the various types of food available. The not-sofun part can be food borne illness associated with undercooked or improperly handled or stored food. The Florida/USVI Poison Information Center Jacksonville can provide food safety education tips and management advice for food poisoning if it does occur. Parents should be vigilant for malicious contamination and tampering of Halloween candy, said Dr. Jay Schauben, director of the Florida/USVI Poison Information Center Jacksonville. Likewise, we can decrease the risk to children by using non-toxic paints and materials for costume design and by paying close attention to food/candy labels to prevent food allergies. The following tips can help ensure a safe Halloween for everyone: Parents should inspect all treats their children bring home before any are consumed and immediately discard treats with puncture holes, tears or signs of re-wrapping. Feed children dinner before they go out or bring along your own candy to give your children to reduce the urge to snack on treats that have not been inspected. Be extra careful with toddlers goodies. Avoid choking hazards by allowing treats that are age-appropriate. Be careful with hard candy, gum, peanuts and toys with small parts. Caution children to not chew or bite on glow sticks or glow jewelry as these products contain an irritating chemical which may cause pain if it gets in their mouth, eyes or throat. If using dry ice for decorations, be aware that direct contact with the skin or mouth can cause a frostbite type injury. Wash immediately with water. Wear reflective costumes in the dark or carry a flashlight. When in doubt, throw it out! For more Halloween safety tips, log on to the Poison Centers website at www.fpicjax.org; click on Poison Info/Prevention/Seasonal Hazards/Autumn. In a poisoning emergency, dont waste time searching the Internet. Call your Poison Center first at 1-800-2221222 and a Specialist in Poison Information will assist you. The Poison Center Help line is toll free and Specialists are available 24 hours a day in a poisoning emergency, or to answer your poisoning-related questions.. We need your helpLa Iglesia de Dios is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the only Spanish speaking Christian congregation in our community of Wildwood. In the spirit of the season, we are holding our First Annual Christmas Toy Drive. To assist us in our efforts, we are asking you to support our event and consider making a monetary donation or a simple $20 donation that can be used towards our toy drive. We hope you will consider supporting La Iglesia de Dios in Wildwood, FL. Our goal in this toy drive is to bring a smile to a child with great need this Christmas. To make a donation and help us out, contact us at: 255-8286. Thanks in advance for your consideration of our request and May God richly bless you this season. Happy Holidays! Juan N. Bonilla Senior PastorUF/IFAS Extension Sumter County Master Gardeners Fall Plant SaleThe Sumter County Master Gardeners would like to thank all the wonderful residents that attended our annual Fall Plant Sale Fundraiser. You helped us have the most successful sale yet! We also want to thank the City of Wildwood and the generous vendors who were integral to our success: Bob Wines Nursery, Brantley Nursery, Browns Market, Cottage Garden, Creative Garden Structures, Earth Scapes, Exterior Spaces, Facilities Resources, Fairfield Farms, Fernview Farms, Goneys Nursery, Heather Oaks Farm, Just Perfect Plants, Living Towers, Marcia Taylor, Medallion Nurseries, Mr. Stacky, Oxford Groundcovers, Roger & Johanna Jones, Simon Seed, Southern Charm, Speedling Inc., T. Westons Smokehouse. Taylor Gardens, TerraScape, Vertigro and Village Palms. Thank you so much for supporting the Sumter County Master Gardener Program. Sumter County Master Gardeners Moving along at Baker HousePlanned work on the Baker House, in Wildwood, is moving forward. Some of the plans included removing a breezeway that was added in the mid 1950s between the kitchen and the main house. Thanks to the labor and effort of several volunteers from The Villages Ken Kraut, Rick Gauthier and Jerry Peacock, the connection has been removed and the building has been returned to its original design, as two completely separate structures. Their efforts will allow us to move forward with the other projects. This week, Certified Foundations Inc., of Lakeland, began the process of leveling the foundation of the house. They are doing both the main house and the kitchen house. The work includes putting in piers and finishing work on the kitchen house. The company has generously donated the cost of the main house a huge step, because work on the interior of the home cannot begin until this is completed and the home is level. Their generosity has put the work an entire year ahead of schedule. On Nov. 15-17th, we will be having a window workshop to restore the windows of the house. This is the first time these three companies have come together to offer this workshop. The cost is $250 for a workshop that normally costs $375 per person. This workshop includes all training, meals and even a mini tool kit for each participant. To view or download the flyer, visit www.sumtercountytimes.com find the features dropdown and then events. Click on the flier. With these companies hosting the project, it will be a savings to the Baker House project of $13,000 again this has put us ahead of schedule. With the floor leveled and the windows sealed, we will be able to begin restoration process on the inside and out. The house is closed for open tours right now due to construction, but will reopen on December 14th and 15th for our Christmas Tours. Our tour will be different this year. We are offering the opportunity for any business, group, organization or individual to select a room and decorate it, we will then have the visitors on the tour to select the Best Decorated Room. We have a few rooms left, so anyone interested should contact me. Also, on Saturday December 14th, the Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 741, will be setting up a live encampment on the grounds in full period dress. They will have parade drills and formations throughout the day. On a side note, the Wildwood Area Historical Association is once again putting on the Wildwood Christmas Parade on Saturday. Dec. 7. We are still looking for entries in the parade. Entry fee is canned goods to be given to our local food pantries. Gidget Gibson Wildwood Area Historical PresidentDont overreactDont overreact to what youve been hearing without investigating the sources and the facts. While the essence of the affordable healthcare program is sound, the Healthcare.gov website unfortunately was not sufficiently tested before going public. This flub does not discredit the basic value of the program. The opponents of the president are grabbing onto this minor flaw to make a political case against the heart of the matter which is affordable-healthcare-for-all-Americans-despite-t heir-circumstances. The healthcare delivery and payment system is not wrapped up in the website. Dont be misled by the critics who are picking at the wrapper and ignoring the heart with its abundance of economic and societal advantages. The website difficulty is a minor flaw. People are still getting help via phone, walk-in and by land mail. In the 17 states that have set up healthcare exchanges, they have their own websites which are working. Please watch the linked interview http://www.youtube.com/watch?v Maa87MA7dxI&featureplayer_e mbedded with Kentuckys Governor Beshear describing how theyve had ~1,000 registrants a day, his goal being to cover 640,000 previously uninsured people in his state. Notice that his NC (R) critic Senator Renee Ellmers dwells on the failures of the website but refuses to discuss Governor Beshears stated successes with the program itself. I dont believe the damage is getting worse by the day as some think. I believe the noise is getting louder as the (R)s take political advantage of this snag. New and more experienced experts are being brought into the repair process. Look up news about Jeffrey Zients. Think back to the implementation of all new huge computerized systems. They always take a year or two to iron out the kinks. Medicare which everyone now loves was two to three years in its roll out. Here is a good source of current news on the subject. http://www.reuters.com/subjects/healthcare Dont just listen to the noise, dig a little and read up on some real information. Take a deep breath. Well get through this. Share this with your friends. You should have a smoke detector in hallways leading to sleeping rooms, in every bedroom, and on every level of your home. When installed and functioning properly, smoke detectors will give you adequate warning of a fire in your home and allow you and your family to escape. Always remember to have a meeting place for your family in the event of a fire. Sumter County Fire and EMS will also be happy to help you with installing batteries in your detectors and providing a smoke detector if your home does not have one. For more information on this topic please contact Sumter County Fire and EMS Headquarters in Wildwood, FL at (352) 689-4500. Please visit our website at www.sumtercountyfl.gov. POSTMASTER:SENDADDRESSCHANGESTO SUMTERCOUNTYTIMES. Tristan Collop (Shaggy) and Aquiles Gamez (Scooby) practice for their roles in this years Mr. South Sumter. at South Sumter High School. The contest and fundraiser is this Friday night in the school gym. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Mr. South Sumter, this Friday Its that time of the year when you think f ootball, fall festivals and, of course, Mr. South Sumter. Born in 1988 at a powder puff football game, the contest has grown into an annual event at the school and a great opportunity for students to earn money for educational field trips, club shirt and much more. Part of the money from the event helps to fund an educational, behindthescenes field trip to Sea World. This year, a portion will also be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research. The Mr. South Sumter theme is A Scooby Doo Mystery, with emcee, Miss Frizzle and Mystery Incorporated. The mystery sleuths will even be solving a crime, as a 60s talent show goes on. Contestants from seven clubs have already signed up to participate, in hopes of becoming the next Mr. South Sumter and winning the big $100 prize! Psychology club students will begin selling tickets this week. The cost per person is $3 in advance and $5 at the door. Guests will also be given a program for the event created and distributed by the students, as a courtesy. Psychology Club students spend a part of each Wednesday, volunteering at Bushnell Elementary school or working with high school students. They do this as a way to give back to their community, while learning that one individual can make all the difference in the world for one child or one other human being. Former psychology students often reflect on this volunteer time as the most important and valuable lesson they learned from the class. So, mark your calendars for 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. The event will be in the school gym and doors open at 6:15 p.m. Guests are urged to bring their cameras. 000GHVS 000GCK3

PAGEA10SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, OCTOBER31, 2013 Kendrick Brown did everything he possibly could but the Villages managed to come up with a 43-35 victory over Wildwood High Friday night at the Villages High field. Brown scored four touchdowns and ran for 267 yards. The Wildcats had 337 yards rushing and 392 yards of total offense. He (Brown) was really rushing hard and doing great job of getting outside and finding the open seams, said Wildwood High head football coach Jimbo Hale. Wildcat quarterback Torre Parker threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Donte Johnson. This single wing really works for Wildwood. Our offense is starting to click, said Hale. We run a very simple scheme. The last three weeks, we have run for 1,045 yards. We still have a lot of work to do on the little things. Overall, I think we are really starting to gain confidence in our ability to move the ball. Obviously, when you run the ball 95 percent of the time, you will have teams starting to load the box, which they already have been. We really have to work hard on our passing game. Im very pleased with our offensive production. Defensively, we still need to keep things simple. The Villages did a great job of running the option. I was a little disappointed when I saw our players hanging their heads after they tired the game. We need to learn how to finish. Hale said it appears Wildwood may be facing Dixie County in the playoffs but his team could end up with a three-way tie for first in its own district. Stay tuned. They are Mike Specht and his horse, Sunny, with handler, Brady Fernandez and Rick Terio on his horse, Randy. FROM THE GROUND UP Question:What are some plants I can plant in shady areas that will also last through the cool season?Answer:Some common partial sun to shade loving plants that will also add a variety of color to shady areas of your landscape include variegated ginger, Japanese holly, coleus, foxglove, pansy and groundcovers such as liriope & wandering jew. There are lots of beautiful shade tolerant plants from ground covers to perennials to shrubs that will thrive under large oak or maple trees too. Some may die back or go dormant, losing their leaves & blooms during frosts or when temps dip below 30-40 degrees.Question:Is it okay to prune my crape myrtle now that there are no more blooms?Answer:The crape myrtle is a low maintenance plant that requires very little pruning unless you are looking to improve the plants structure, shape, and size to fit your landscape. Its best to prune December-February once the plant is leafless, without blooms & goes dormant. Pruning too early might stimulate new growth that could be damaged by low temperatures. Prune dead, damaged, or crossing & rubbing branches.Question:I have an angel trumpet plant in full bloom. Is there any special care for this plant?Answer:This tree-like plant with its cascading blooms makes a dramatic appearance in the landscape. Full sun provides the best flowering. They like an alkaline soil & require regular watering in dry weather. You can prune branches below the plant or train the branches to grow upright forming a canopy allowing the flowers to hang from the stems. This plant can grow to 15 ft. tall & has fragrant pink or white blooms. To submit questions to Ask the Master Gardener please call 352793-2728, Ext. 229 or email us at plantclinic@aol.com Photos courtesy of UF/IFAS files. By now I would hope that all pet parents are aware of the latest warning of pet treats causing sickness and death to many animals. Although warnings have been out for several years concerning the jerky treats made in China, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) apparently has issued a recent warning. Although the FDA has tested over 1200 jerky treats over the past few years, they still cannot determine what is causing over thousands of dogs and at least 10 cats to become sick, with at least 580 deaths reported. Various forms of jerky and tender strips, sold under different pet company names, include chicken, duck, sweet potato, and fruit, all have one thing in common. They were made in China. Effected pets will grow ill within hours of eating these treats, showing symptoms of decreased appetite and activity, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive water consumption and excessive urination. Why these treats remain on the shelves of stores is a mystery to me. But it should be a warning to all pet parents to beware of pet treats made in China. When shopping for treats, always read where the treats and food were made. Be careful, as the the packaging can be deceiving. Just because an American company is named on the package, it could still be made in China. Keep reading the package until you actually see the words: Made In and see what country it actually was made in. As for me, I read all labels and refuse to give treats or food of any kind to my pets that were made in China. These mystery illnesses and deaths have been going on for years, so why chance it. How about buying pet treats made in the good old USA! Yes, they may be hard to find, but keep looking. Ask your local stores to carry more USA pet products. Not only will it help the USA economy, but our pets will consume safer food. Be vigilant. Stay aware of any pet food recalls. Many different countries manufacture the pet foods in our local stores, and many are safe. But with the excessive incidents of illnesses and deaths associated with food and treats made in China, it is best to beware and stay clear of these products.
