Wildwood resident Terry France remembers thinking Its just Shawn when 27-year-old Shawn Fortner reportedly came in their home naked and in a threatening manner on Thursday July 25. I didnt think hed hurt my family. I thought he was just being Shawn. I thought he was just being stupid, he said noting that Fortner often did unusual things and he hadnt taken him seriously at first. France and his wife Colleen were also unaware that Fortner was suspected of killing his own grandmother hours earlier, in her Ocoee home. Later that day, Fortner would confess to the murder, according to Sumter County sheriffs Lt. Bobby Caruthers. It was about 4:50 p.m. when the Ocoee man reportedly entered the Frances home through a door that connects the garage to the living area, Caruthers said. According to the report, Fortner looked angry and began moving around, shouting that he was going to kill all the occupants. Caruthers said Mrs. France panicked and grabbed her sevenyear-old son, placing him in her car, which was parked in the driveway. France said he knew they were in danger When he looked at my wife and said youre next b Im going to f kill you. The two men got into a physical struggle over a knife and when Fortner demanded the knife, France said he told him he wasnt going to get it unless you take it from the blade. He had his passenger door open, France said, noting he believed Fortner intended to take someone with him and that at one point, Fortner looked at him and said Lets go. But France was determined not to go anywhere with him. I had one hand on the knife and the other on the sink. New Teacher Orientation began on Monday, July 22 and concluded on Thursday, July 25. During that time, 35 teachers embarked on a new adventure and Cruised to Success, the theme for induction activities this year. Participants were paid a recruitment bonus by the district, and were provided lunch and breakfast each day by these sponsors: American Fidelity Insurance, Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union, and Sumter County Education Association. Kristin Donahue, a new teacher at Bushnell Elementary School said, I am overjoyed by the welcoming atmosphere of Sumter County, as well as the helpfulness of the New Teacher Induction Program. I cannot wait to start this school year! School Supt. Rick Shirley says he believes in hiring the right people for the right positions and training them well. To this end, he stated, The pattern of academic success demonstrated by our students can be clearly identified as Sumter has been designated an Academically High Performing district by the Florida Department of Educationnot just once, but several times, and is one of the few districts in the entire state to have such a distinction. We owe much of this success to our teachers, he said. Sheana Lanier, a new teacher at Wildwood Elementary School, knows firsthand about the quality programs offered in Sumter District Schools. After graduating from Wildwood High School in 2001, I am so excited to be coming back home to be an educator! I look forward to the future and helping my students be successful, she said. Wildwood group sends them back to school with fun The Wildwood Historic Association (WHA) recently hosted a Back-To-School Bash for the elementary-aged children of the Sumter area at the historic Baker House built by Senator David Baker and his wife back in the late 1800s. Inflatable bounce houses and an obstacle course were the main attractions for children as parents took chairs beneath the trees in the Baker homestead yard. All proceeds from the event were to go towards the restoration of the Baker Home. The WHA hopes to restore the home to be able to rent out to the public for special occasions such as weddings, and events of the like. Since May of 2012 the WHA has been offering tours of the Baker Home. Over six generations of Bakers have lived in the home. The last remaining heir of the Bakers occupied the residence all the way up until September 2012 of last year. This is one of our events to try to introduce the house to the community to show that the house with its beauty and age is still open for all ages, says GidISAACPINEIRO Times Correspondent See FUN, Page 12 Sumter sheriffs Deputy Jeff Cohen shakes the hand of Terry France, whos shown with his wife Colleen and son Jacob. POSTMASTER:SENDADDRESSCHANGESTO SUMTERCOUNTYTIMES. Police report Sumter County elementary and middle schools dropped a grade recently in preliminary state rankings, going from an A to a B for the countys school district. But the lower ranking is not being perceived locally as a setback. Citing higher expectations from the state Department of Education (DOE), School Supt. Rick Shirley says Sumter schools continue to excel and meet high academic standards compared to other school districts. Sumter wasnt alone in dropping a grade level when the results were announced. Only five school districts in the state received an A rating, that compares to 17 districts receiving the A rating last year. In spite of the drop, Sumter still maintains the 13th highest academically ranked district in the state, according to a school district press release. In the county, both Bushnell and Lake Panasoffkee elementary schools received A ratings, like last year. Webster Elementary slipped from an A to a B and South Sumter Middle School received a B rating again this year. Wildwood Elementary School slipped this year from a B to a C rating. The drop in school grades is a result of increased accountability standards, changing expectations and the implementation of a more rigorous curriculum, according to School Supt. Rick Shirley. The students in our schools are continuing to make progress and our teachers, administrators, and district staff continues to work hard to increase student achievement. We are on the right track in preparing our students to compete in a global economy, but we have several areas that need improvement, he said. While fewer elementary and middle schools in the state received As and more schools got Fs, in almost every case, Sumter district schools remained at or above the state average, according to the press release. Over the past eleven years, the state DOE has raised expectations for school performance six times. PAGEA4SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, AUGUST8, 2013 Chamber gets kudos for strong ideas In the past few years, the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce has made some substantial strides in offering events that are pleasing not only to their members but also to the entire county. More emphasis has been placed on not only creating new Chamber adventures but developing ideas and expanding concepts. One of those events is coming up early in September and we hardily support and endorse it. Its the third annual A Taste of Simply Sumter. Its an event that provides patrons with a sample of some of the unique and interesting foods and shopping outlets that are available in the county. This years event is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., in the restaurant at Providence Independence in Wildwood. Whats particularly nice about the event is that not only do you get to sample a variety of foods, view unique shopping items and take in some nice music your support also helps provide scholarships for senior students at South Sumter, Wildwood and The Villages Charter high schools. During the event, restaurants and caterers showcase their signature dishes while merchants display items that are unique and unusual. Items are not sold at the event but rather viewed for a better knowledge of local businesses. The Chamber deserves substantial kudos for organizing this event. Its a lot of fun and a worthy event. For more information you can contact the Chamber of Commerce at 793-3099. France eventually elbowed him and Fortner let go, then asked where their young son was. When Mrs. France reentered the house, she hit all the panic buttons on their ADT security system. According to the report, thats when Fortner yelled Jacob, come with me, see I told you I would be back for you, and ran from the house. He got into his white Toyota and drove away and France ran a couple of houses down to inform a neighbor, who is a Lake County deputy, but was unsuccessful. During the altercation, France sustained a cut on his right arm, which he was treated for. Deputies were responding to the ADT burglary call at the Frances Wildwood residence when Sumter Sheriffs Deputy Jeffrey Cohen spotted the white Toyota Camry and attempted to pull the car over. Fortner reportedly ignored the attempted stop, even running a red light off of C.R. 466A onto U.S. 301. He led authorities, including Wildwood police, on a chase around the city that took them almost back to where he started. He stopped twice during the pursuit, refusing to exit the car and fleeing both times. On U.S. 301, near Old Wire Road, Sgt. Bob Capps deployed stop sticks and this time, when they got the Toyota stopped, Wildwood officer Andy Tucker deployed his tazer on Fortner. When he was arrested, he was reportedly naked in the car, with only a blanket covering his legs. According to France, they received a phone call later, from the girl Fortner had been seeing. She was calling to warn them to get out of the house and letting them know Fortner was on the way over. Too late, France said. If we didnt have the alarm system I dont know what would have happened I might have ended up killing him or he would have ended up killing me, France said. Thinking back on that day, before Fortner arrived, France said, Id have been prepared if Id known what hed done and regrets that he didnt call authorities earlier. France said that earlier in the day he got a phone call from a family friend of Fortners grandparents. He called to say that something was wrong that Fortner had been running around naked. His grandmother had reportedly gone to get him some clothes at Walmart. Fortner is Frances third cousin by marriage. He has worked for France, even staying with the family in the past. He was arrested and booked into the Sumter County Detention Center for burglary, battery and fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer. He was transferred to Orange County at 1:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon. At our detective bureau, he did confess, to the murder of his grandmother Phyllis France, Caruthers said. Who knows what would have happened to them? Caruthers said of the invasion. He may have wanted to switch vehicles, he may have been wanting to continue his crime spree with them it could have really been bad here in our county. To recognize the efforts of the law enforcement officers and their agencies, ADT security monitoring put together an awards ceremony on behalf of the France family. All aspects of law enforcement involved, from communications to officers, were honored with certificates and the sheriffs office and the Wildwood Police Department were each given a check for $5,000. During the award presentation, Sumter Sheriff Bill Farmer spoke, sharing that he has an ADT system in his own home.SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, AUGUST8, 2013, PAGEA7 ADTcontinued from Page 1 Rick Lewis took out Garrett Kelley and Devin Farkus from Pana Vista Lodge in Lake Panasoffkee and caught this nice 8-pound bass. Lake Panasoffkee Improvement Association Summer 2013 Newsletter Lake Panasoffkee Improvement Association is about people helping people in our community who need help and to make our neighborhoods look better for years to come. LPIA is over four hundred members strong, and this summer LPIA has been very busy fulfilling their purpose. LPIA wanted to give back to our local Veterans and be a part of Beautifying Downtown Lake Panasoffkee. When asked by Lake Panasoffkee VFW post if we could help paint the exterior of their building LPIA was excited to be given the opportunity. The VFW and LPIA worked together to give the VFW a Chicago Brick appearance along with a privacy fence for the back part of the VFW property. VFW members and members of the Lake Panasoffkee community are thrilled with the look of the building and how it improves the look of Downtown Lake Panasoffkee. Lake Panasoffkee resident Patty Thompson who was widowed over a year ago came to the association and asked for help cleaning up her Lake Panasoffkee property. The property had been deemed uninhabitable after storm damage in 1993. In Pattys words It was an eyesore for sure, ask the neighbors I am sure they will tell you how happy they are LPIA demolished the home and cleaned the property. Lake Panasoffkee retiree and widow Faye Bradshaw received help from Lake Panasoffkee Improvement Association after a tree fell on her property on June 15th taking out her power, damaging her roof and demolishing her truck. Faye expressed her deep gratitude for the help and how surprised she was that the community helped her, Darrell Chandler, Tommy Gough, Randy Phfetcher, owner of R&W and many other local volunteers were instrumental in the cleanup of Ms. Bradshaws property. Lake Panasoffkee resident Freddie Terry came to LPIA for help cleaning up his property by providing a dumpster to dispose of a large wooden shed in need of removal. Mr. Terry said The Association really helped me a great deal; I wish more people were like that. Christine Kornecki of Lake Panasoffkee approached the Association after she discovered she had holes in her floors and walls, she could see the vinyl on the outside of her home from the inside of her home. The Association repaired her floor and wall damage, replaced two windows and repaired the soffit around her home which was allowing water to come into her home. Ms. Kornecki stated I live in a good neighborhood; I did not want my house to cause problems for my neighbors. I no longer worry when it rains that my house will be damaged. I want to thank Darrel Chandler, all the men who worked on my home and the association for giving me piece of mind and they made me feel important. I am blessed that God has brought people into my life to help me. Carolyn Baker of Lake Panasoffkee reached out to LPIA for help cleaning up her property the association provided the dumpster for the removal of debris, and trash. Ms. Baker stated I am very pleased with all the progress which has been made in the community, I am looking forward to more improvements within the community and I appreciate all the volunteers that worked hard for Lake Panasoffkee Improvement Association. LPIA is grateful to all the many members, volunteers and the many people who have donated to the associations cause. Everyone involved are behind the association being able to help people in our community who need help and to make our neighborhoods look better for years to come. For more information about LPIA, membership or to make a donation, please call Tammy Gorby at 352-603-9403. The Cops: Close up The Sumter County Youth Center hosted a Kids NCops Day on Friday, July 26th with with the help of the Sumter County Sheriffs Office. An estimated 75 children had the chance to meet local officers and learn about their jobs. The afternoon included being able to check out gear, vehicles and watercraft operated and used by the officers. The idea is to build a good relationship between the youth and law enforcement and to give the children a feeling of safety and security with the officers. A 2012 survey by the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) found 53 percent of adult dogs and 55 percent of cats are classified by their veterinarians as overweight or obese. That averages at 88.4 million overweight pets in the United States. Why the concern of obesity in pets? Obesity is associated with serious health issues that will not only be detrimental to your pets health, but cost pet parents thousands of dollars to treat. Common health problems associated to obesity that effect dogs and cats are: diabetes; high blood pressure; heart disease and breathing problems; kidney disease; and osteoarthritis. Obese animals suffer with a poor quality of life and more than likely have a shortened life expectancy. This is one health problem that is created by overindulgent pet parents. Not surprisingly, these are pets that are loved and important members of their family. Yet, many pet parents seem blind to the fact that their beloved dog or cat is excessively overweight, and the harm that they are subjecting them to. Be honest and ask yourself if your pet is overweight. If the answer is yes, or even perhaps, talk to your veterinarian about starting your pet on a healthy diet. One of the major contributors to obesity is feeding too many treats and table scraps. Yes, we all understand how hard it is to resist those pleading eyes begging for a treat. But instead of dog and cat treats that may be loaded with calories, give crunchy vegetable such as baby carrots, string beans, and broccoli. Keep in mind that an excess amount of even low calorie food should be avoided. Of course, prevention is much easier than treating obesity. However, with the guidance of your veterinarian, and your own commitment for a healthier life for your pet, you can safely help Fido and Felix trim down, and look forward to a long and healthy life together.
