Actually, that was the name of the workshop the participants attended at the Bushnell state park during the morning hours. Armed with posthole diggers and with Kristin Wood, park event coordinator, leading the way, the group set out to the grasslands of the park in search of edible plants. Wood took the group to a variety of sites where she pointed out plants that could be consumed. She also provided the necessary information about how to collect, prepare and eat the different plants. Coming to Panasoffkee Murder probe heads north The mystery remains surrounding the murder of an unidentified woman whose badly decomposed body was discovered in April in woods near Wildwood but investigators are turning their hopes northward. Since the body was discovered near the intersection of Interstate 75 and State Road 44, sheriffs investigators have been diligently attempting to solve the case and bring closure to the mystery surrounding the womans identity and her death. The recent results of geological testing have now turned the gaze of investigators toward the Florida Panhandle area in hopes that new information will be uncovered. Law enforcement agencies in Leon, Escambia and Bay counties have been contacted in hopes that the woman can be identified. Based on bone testing by a doctor with the University of Florida, the murder victim is believed to have been a resident of that area for more than a decade, according to sheriffs Capt. Kevin Hofecker. Because of the new information, press conferences were held earlier this week in several northern communities in hopes that the woman will be identified, Hofecker said. The womans body was found April 22 in secluded woods behind Wendys restaurant on State Road 44. She died from a gunshot wound but investigators are still not Photos by BOB REICHMAN Checking a plant are Kindsay Csogi and her sons Aden (left) and Gabriel. PAGEA4SUMTERCOUNTY(FL) TIMES, THURSDAY, JULY18, 2013 Off to a great start What a great idea! What a great promotion for Lake Panasoffkee! What community support its drawing from the locals! What fun! In an effort to promote the fishing community and bring more commerce to the area, Tampa-based OrangeTheory has been hired to market Lake Panasoffkee. Since life does revolve around a lake, it seems fitting that the promotions center on water fun especially fishing. The first event coordinated by the group was General Sumters Panfish Tournament held last Saturday. Dozens of anglers on dozens of boats rolled into town and cranked their motors for a chance at the $500 prize. While not everybody saw out-of-towners, some of the businesses benefited, selling out of some goods and others had a chance to be seen the participants came from as far away as Tampa and Gainesville. They also came from Sumter County. They came in twos and fours sometimes more. Families launched from the lodges or park and tried their hand with the hook and line. It was a great day of fun for them even with the rain. And even when the haul wasnt so great anglers came in laughing, even when they didnt have much to show for a day of fishing. In one case, the team of anglers seemed to have just as much fun catching very little as they would have taking a big haul. After all, it was the reason they got to laugh at their fourth member and his insistence that they be weighed in. It was family friendly many of the boats included children and often, those children contributed substantially to the catch for the day. It was a contest open to everyone of every age, with the idea of promoting the entire community. What generosity! Businesses were more than ready to support their community. For example, Catfish Johnny and Pat Galvin donated not only their facility for the awards celebration, they treated all the anglers to lunch and paid for the band that entertained them. There was a big win for some top anglers of the day and to think it was just the beginning just the kick-off to a year of fishing for fun and challenge and prizes remember, theres a $10,000 fish in them thar waters! What fun! Applause and appreciation go out to all those who supported and participated in the first event and those that are continuing their support in the year long tournament. Im not much of an angler, Id go sometimes with my late father who would bait my hook. More recently, it was cane poles in the pond with my big brother who baited my hook. But this is a chance to support community and vie for some pretty big prizes. Heck, for $10,000 and all that fun, I might learn how to bait my own hook!Brenda Locklear is a staff writer for the Sumter County Times. What do you think about the tournament? Will you participate? To comment online, visit the editorial page at www.sumtercountytimes.com Find details on the tournaments in the July 20th issue of the Sumter County Times in print or in the complete e-edition online at www.sumtercountytimes.com Disappointed by boardThe Sumter County Commissioners again exhibited less concern to the voters opinion or desires when making major decisions effecting the daily lifestyle of same. With the exception of Commissioner Don Burgess, residents attending the meeting for purpose to the outsourcing of the County Libraries to those outside whether County or State company, they were totally ignored during the final vote. Most of our local business men/women do not operate on that principle that the Commissioners followed on this decision. This writer has found that most residents stride to use local businesses. They show more concern with the best results of their customers as criterion than this Boards past history of changes to our County. Why cant our Board do the same, wasnt that what they each promised when campaigning for our votes at election time? They promised to work for the residents, not the wishes of a County Administrator who has at times forgotten how or why he was hired. It was not necessarily to change our County to his preferences but offer programs/ideas for improvements after the voters express their agreement/approval to the Commissioners. The libraries offer local employment research to our youth, enjoyment for young and old. For this reason, citizens are willing to volunteer in order to keeping our libraries applicable to our lifestyle. What does this out of County Company know about Sumter culture or lifestyle ,they only know profit of a contract. This particular vote is not the first time, the Board of Commissioners have turned their heads away from the protest of voters. Whats next? Janeann Brangman Adamsville Become a teacher As highlighted in Change the Equations 2012 Florida Vital Signs report, only 22 percent of Florida eighth graders have a math teacher who majored in the subject they teach. Only 43 percent of eighth graders have a science teacher who majored in the subject they teach. Florida school districts continue an uphill battle to improving student outcomes in science, said Shawn Arvalo McCollough, a former superintendent, principal and teacher who now serves as President and CEO of the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence. With more than 70 percent of Florida eighth graders below proficient in science as well as math, there is increased pressure for school districts to recruit and retain highly-qualified teachers. This summer the American Board, a teacher certification nonprofit, is aiming to alleviate this issue in Florida by helping career-changing professionals bring their experience and expertise to local classrooms. For those who are looking for a career change, the teaching profession is a great option and extremely rewarding, said McCollough. Youre part of building the future. Accepted by the Florida Department of Education in 2004, the American Board assists career-changers, subject area experts, recent college graduates, and others with a Bachelors degree to earn full teacher certification. The American Board certifies teachers in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, including Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, in addition to English Language Arts, Special Education, Elementary Education, and History. For community members who wish to make a difference in the classroom, the American Board provides an affordable, accessible, and accelerated route to teaching. The program is offered online, and candidates can work at their own pace and on their own time. As a former superintendent and principal, I truly recognize the value of finding teachers who understand and care about the local community, said McCollough. The American Board will be hosting informational sessions this July and August. Lauren Schubel, the Boards local representative, will provide materials and answer questions about how to become a certified teacher in Florida. RSVP at http://www.abcte.org/drupal/tea ch/events. Shinseki announced the award of approximately $5.5 million in homeless prevention grant to the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System Florida counties of: Alachua, Bradford, Citrus, Clay, Gilchrist, Putnam, Sumter, Flagler, Duval, Jefferson, Madison, Taylor, Franklin, Liberty, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Suwannee, Union, Leon, Marion, Columbia. The grants will serve approximately 2800 homeless and at-risk Veteran families as part of the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. This award will serve Veterans families associated with Homeless Services Network of Central Florida, Inc., Salvation Army, Emergency Services and Homeless Coalition of Jacksonville, Inc., Meridian Behavioral Healthcare, Inc., and Volunteers of American of Florida, Inc, and Family Endeavors are six of 319 community agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. With these grants, we are strengthening our partnership with community nonprofits across the country to provide Veterans and their families with hope, a home, and a future, said Shinseki. The work of Supportive Services for Veteran Families program grantees has already helped us prevent and end homelessness among tens of thousands of homeless Veterans and their families, but as long as a single Veteran lives on our streets, we have work to do. Under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, VA is awarding grants to private nonprofit organizations and consumer cooperatives that provide services to very lowincome Veteran families living in or transitioning to permanent housing. Those community organizations provide a range of services that promote housing stability among eligible very low income Veteran families. Thanks to the SSVF grants, those community organizations will provide a range of services that promote housing stability and play a key role in connecting Veterans and their family members to VA services such as mental health care and other benefits. Community-based groups can offer temporary financial assistance on behalf of Veterans for rent payments, utility payments, security deposits and moving costs. This is the programs third year. Last year, VA provided about $100 million to assist approximately 50,000 Veterans and family members. In 2009, President Obama and Secretary Shinseki announced the federal governments goal to end Veteran homelessness in 2015. The grants are intended to help accomplish that goal. According to the 2012 Point-in-Time Estimates of Homelessness, homelessness among Veterans has declined 17.2 percent since 2009. Through the homeless Veterans initiative, VA committed over $1 billion in fiscal year 2013 to strengthen programs that prevent and end homelessness among Veterans. VA provides a range of services to homeless Veterans, including health care, housing, job training, and education. More information about VAs homeless programs is available at www.va.gov/homeless. BRENDA LOCKLEAR/Sumter County TimesRick Lewis, of Wildwood, took fifth grader Devin Farkus as his partner for the panfish fishing challenge last Saturday. They won the $100 cash prize for taking second place in the challenge with 12.14 pounds of panfish. The Lewis team also caught a bluegill weighing in at .75 pounds, taking prize money. At the left, Tate Kitchen, of Texas, joined a crew for the fun. Kitchen is shown here holding up his stringer full of fish, weighing in at 2.74 pounds. Fishing in Panasoffkee thats worth $10,000 to the angler who catches him. The bass is one of 150 tagged fish that will earn the angler a prize. As for Saturdays General Sumters Panfish Tournament kick-off, the event drew anglers and enthusiasts from Tampa to Gainesville and Plant City to Ocala. And while there was plenty of competition, it was local anglers who took the top prizes. The grand prize went to the four-person team of Robert Peralta of Coleman and his son Landon, and Allen Whitt and his daughter Kylee. The team brought in 25 panfish with a total weight of 14.02 pounds and took home the $500 cash prize. They also snagged the $100 award for biggest shellcracker when six-year-old Kylee landed a fish weighing over a pound. Catfish Johnny and his wife Pat (Galvin) hosted the lunch and ceremony at their restaurant in Lake Panasoffkee. The couple donated their facility, treated all the contestants to lunch and paid for a band to entertain the crowd during the afternoon. Were happy to do do it. I t turned out well, said Galvin of the tournament event. I think its great I think theyre doing a good thing, Galvin said, adding that the only thing to make it better would be for him to catch General Sumter. Close friends Robert Peralta and Allen Whitt grew up living just down the street from each other in Lake Panasoffkee. For two young teens, crossing the street and heading down to Pana-Vista Lodge to fish the lake filled a typical day. We grew up hunting and fishing together, Peralta said. They were in their early teens then and are still fishing and hunting buddies today, all these years later. Peralta turns 30 this weekend. He said the spot they were actually planning to fish was covered with duckweed the day of the tournament. They decided to idle out into the middle of the lake, where they found a spot. They anchored up about 8 a.m. and never moved until it was time to weigh in, Peralta said. Fishing is a family thing and taking their children along is common for them. But it is only the second actual tournament for the two elementaryaged children. While they dont win every tournaBRENDA LOCKLEAR/Sumter County TimesIt was weigh-in time on the lake and (pictured above) Landon Peralta was holding the net while his dad Robert piled them in for the count. The Peraltas joined forces with the Whitts Allen and his daughter Kylee. This big collection of fish was worth $500 to the fishing team of four. BRENDA LOCKLEAR/Sumter County TimesOverall winners in the panfish tournament on Lake Panasoffkee were friends and longtime fishing partners Robert Peralta and Allen Whitt, with their children Landon Peralta and Kylee Whitt. Commissioner Don Hahnsfeldt (left) made the presentation to the team, which Peralta said all contributed to the haul. They had more than plenty when it came to weigh-in and number. The total weight on their panfish was 14.02 pounds. The team took home $500 for the win and also snagged the $100 award for biggest shellcracker when six-year-old Kylee Whitt landed a fish weighing over a pound. ment theyve been in, they are building a record Peraltas teenaged stepdaughter won a youth tournament a couple of years back and Whitt and Peralta also won this years Sumter Baptist Association tournament. Lewis also fishes the lake regularly and said he had taken his girlfriends son and Devin the day before. Devin is the son of a friend. We caught a caught a 10pound bass out there, he said of the earlier day, noting they took it to PanaVista where they put it in a tank for people to see If I cant hunt Ill go fishing. When Lewis found out about the tournament, he asked Devin if hed like to join him and it was Yes sir, Mr. Rick. On the day of the challenge, Lewis knew they were doing well and two of their fish were nice sized. He told Farkus that he thought one of them might end up taking one of the top prizes. He was excited. Devin baits his own hook and he caught as many as I did. We had a good time, he said, adding that they also won some money and got a good lunch. From Wildwood, Lewis said with the year long tournament on to find General Sumter, well be regulars out there. He plans to bring both boys on the fishing trips. While there were a couple of rain showers earlier in the day on Saturday, the heavier weather and lightning held out just long enough to ensure a great day of fishing for everyone involved. Event organizers were especially pleased to see that many of boats filled with families and small children who really enjoyed a fun day on the lake, according to Harold Windlan of OrangeTheory. We were blown away by the turnout, said the companys president, Trimeka Benjamin. OrangeTheory is a marketing company from Tampa that was contracted to promote Lake Panasoffkee and possibly other areas of Sumter County. It was great to see so many small children on many of the boats and the community support and involvement was just terrific. The tournament ended at 2 p.m., with anglers weighing in at the FWC boat, anchored just off the walking pier at Werdaheckamiat? Particpants then gathered at Catfish Johnnys for lunch, drink and live music, including a performance by Catfish Johnny himself. But remember, its just the beginning, so you might want to get your fishing gear on and get on the lake.General Sumters fishing challengeIf you love to fish, then you wont want to miss this year in Lake Panasoffkee because there plenty of opportunity for the angler on the water. But heres the thing, even if you dont love to fish, you might want to spend time in the water, with a hook and line. Thats because this year long tournament includes a chance to catch any one or more of 150 tagged fish with some mighty fine prizes, including the grand prize, granddaddy General Sumter, worth $10,000 to the lucky angler who reels him in. The prizes range from weekend getaways at the lodges Pana-Vista, WerdaHeckamiat? and Idlewild to cash wins. The fish were tagged by the Freshwater Wildlife and Conservation Commission and released into the lake. Theres also Colonel Crappie, Major Bushnell, Captain Coleman and Marshall Rain. Each will earn the lucky angler who catches it a $150 cash prize. Major Marsh is worth a four-person airboat adventure, courtesy of Tom and Jerrys Airboat Rides and Admiral Amos will get you a $100 gift certificate to The Southern Cotillion in Wildwood. Then theres Captain Veal, Sgt. Shellcracker and Lt. Pan each offering a weekend getaway on the lake. The getaway will be at one of the following three lodges, determining how the fish is tagged PanaVista, Idlewild and WerdaHeckamiat? Prizes for the cabin stays are valued between $400 and $500 each. Each prize fish is tagged with instructions on how to submit your claim. You can also visit www.sumtercountytimes.com and link up for more information. Lectures will be held Sunday nights from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Monday from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Teaching Zoo classroom located in Bushnell. Lab times will be a minimum one day weekly, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Teaching Zoo and one weekend public tour day per month. Graduates will receive certification from Florida Teaching Zoo. The tax deductable tuition fee is $1000 per term (4 terms per year). Monthly payment plans may be requested at $350 per month. For more information, call 352-867-7788 or go to Facebook: The Florida International Teaching Zoo www.floridazooschool.org New life continues to blossom from spring through summer months. And though it is a beautiful time of year for plants, trees and wildlife, it is also a sad time when millions of homeless kittens will be born. Because there are not enough homes for so many kittens, hundreds of thousands of healthy cats and kittens will be euthanized in animal shelters across this country. And though humane organizations are making progress through adoptions and spay and neuter programs, still the sad scenario continues year after year. Early spring through fall is kitten season across the country, and so many of these animals will face a tragic end in overcrowded shelters. New life should be a joyful time and filled with promise of a bright future. New life should be appreciated and nurtured. But not so for homeless cats giving birth to so many kittens. A homeless cat living on its own faces many dangers. Preditors, moving vehicles, disease, and starvation are a constant threat. Bring baby kittens into this scenario, and the dangers are even greater. Now these new kittenss lives that should hold the promise of a bright future as all life deserves, is denied, and instead, the majority will suffer a life shortened by the dangers they must face. If brought to a shelter, and with little chance of being adopted, their lives are then extinguished because there is not enough homes for them all. This does not need to continue! We all have the power to make positive changes and stop the killing of homeless animals. First and foremost, we must spay and neuter our own animals. We must stop the breeding of so many unwanted animals. Adopt! Go to your local shelter or humane society and adopt a cat or kitten. Better yet, adopt two, so they have a friend of their own species to play with. If you cant make the commitment to adopt, maybe fostering a homeless pet until he or she finds a forever home is right for you. Volunteer your time! Your local humane society needs you. From Bushnell, she played for South Sumter as a catcher, but joined the Tidwells in a chance to play summer ball, when there was no girls softball league in Sumter. They played for the Inverness Golddiggers and Gunslingers racking up top district and sectional team titles. Martin began playing about seven years ago, when she went along with her cousin who signing up. Her mom laughed when she talked about Moriah deciding to sign up that day, even though she had never touched a softball before. She liked the game immediately and said she liked right away and said she just enjoys playing and the physical demands of the game. Shes learned teamwork from softball and is determined, willing to learn and versatile. Martins top strength is her speed, shes a fast runner. She hopes to go on to college and become and athletic trainer. Aside from sports, she enjoys time with her family and friends and Instagrams. She is the daughter of Frank and Gerry Martin and has two sisters Jessica and Erynn. She also has one brother-in-law Jessicas husband Michael and one nephew, Owen. Martin comes from a local sports background Moriah Martin The Tidwell sisters Lauren, 14, and Courtney,13, love their softball. So much so, that if they cant play in their home county of Sumter, theyll find a team where they can. This year, when there werent enough participants to form a league in Sumter, their mom Kim said they ended up in Inverness. The girls, who live in Lake Panasoffkee and play South Sumter Girls Softball, joined the Inverness Golddiggers and Gunslingers in order to play travel ball this season. Lauren plays first, third and centerfield and has acquired six trophies and six medals in her four-year career. My sister Courtney Tidwell inspired me to play, and its a game that she enjoys for the challenge. One of the biggest lessons shes learned from the game is How to work with other people. Her strengths include first and third base, hitting and base running. She said she hopes others know the confidence that she has and plans to graduate high school and move on to college. Along with softball, she enjoys riding horses and bowling. Younger sister Courtney also played for the South Sumter team, as well as the South Sumter Middle School team, before playing with the Inverness travel ball team. Playing pitcher, first and second base, she has earned 12 medals, eight first place and four second place honors with team play. She has been named Most Value Player twice and earned the trophy for first place in a homerun derby. She began playing nine years ago. I got into it because my neighbor played softball and it seemed interesting, she said. She likes the confidence and teamwork skills it builds and the challenge of the game. That means shes honing her own skills, including discipline. Shes also learned that hard work pays off. If they could change anything about the game, Lauren said it would be the number of players on the field, while Courtney said its the rules. Courtneys strengths include being a left-handed pitcher, bunter, advanced hitter, slap hitter and first baseman. She hopes to get a scholarship to school and to become a Florida Gator. Her other interests include school, football and drag racing. Both girls hope that the fans and teammates can see confidence in them as players and their confidence in the game. Their mom is Kim Simmons who played softball when she was younger and currently coaches. They have two other sisters Kristy Eiler who was a cheerleader before serving in the United States Army at 19 serving six years; sister Felicia Huggins graduated from South Sumter High School in 2007. Their father is the late Wayne Tidwell. He owned Waynes Backhoe Service. Sisters Lauren (left) and Courtney Tidwell of Lake Panasoffkee played the travel ball season as part of the Inverness All-Stars Seniors team, taking the District Title and then moving on to take the sectional title.
