Relay weathers storm

While the weather
started out rough and it
seemed the annual Relay
for Life might crash
against the rocks, partici-
pants and survivors
sailed on. Harsh wind
gusts and heavy rain man-
gled tents and soaked the
crowd Friday night, but
the spirit of the.: relay
soared.
"Kids. were going from
team to team asking,
'What can I do to help
you?'"
"We kept the music
going. There were no
events or games they
were just there to Relay
They were there to raise
funds," Gibson said.
But even with the lack
of events and loss of tents,
another $7,000 was made
for the American Cancer
Society. The annual event
was at the Lake-Sumter
Community College cam-
pus in Sumterville.

stayed until well after
midnight.
Gibson said American
Cement team members
walked all night. The
storm took their tent and
all they had to sleep in
were chairs, but they're
ready to come back next
year.
Gibson said she's gotten
comments that range
from "It was quite a night
but wait 'til next year," to
"We had a great time."
Gibson said with $7,000
that came in and another
$2,000 on Monday, she
couldn't imagine how
much they might have
raised.
She reminds the public
that they are still taking
money which can be
turned in to her, Ameri-
.can Cancer Society repre-
sentative Bryan Beyer or
to Center State Bank in

Bushnell.
The final total will be in
by the wrap party in June.
Survivor Chairman
Tanya Mikeals said the
survivors weathered the
storm "very, very well."

A 34-year-old woman told
police she was forced at
gunpoint to drive from her
apartment in Fruitland
Park to County Road 545
between Bushnell and
Sumterville, where she es-
caped.
As of press time, no ar-
rests had been made.
The victim, whose name
was withheld by the sher-
iff's office, said she was
leaving her apartment
Thursday, May 14 to go to
work when a man with a
gun jumped in front of her
and told her to stop, ac-
cording to the Sumter
County Sheriff's Office re-
port.
The victim said her front
windows were down and
the man reached through
the passenger side window,
unlocked the car, opened
the rear passenger door,
and got in, according to the
report.
The man lay down in the
rear seat and placed the

taking care of each other.
Gibson said one survivor
e-mailed her that it was
kind of like the "March of
the Penguins" movie, "The
healthier ones stand
around the outside to pro-
tect those who aren't as
strong," she said.
"It was amazing to see
how everybody just came
together to help one an-
other," Mikeals said.
"Out of all the positions
I've held with Relay, the

most rewarding," Mikeals
said.
She recalls taking on the
job. She said she had 80
survivors signed up and
only $150 to feed them all.
"You gotta be kidding
me," she thought.
But the generosity of
businesses in the commu-
nity made the event.
"Sonny's donated the
food and provided
servers."
Everything was donated
and the American Cancer
Society still has its $150,"
she said.
"It's amazing with the
economy."
This year's wrap-up
party is slated for 6 p.m. on
Tuesday, June 16, at South
Sumter High School in
Bushnell.

Since the theme was movies, a few folks from "The
Wizard of Oz" arrived for the fun. In everyday life

residents.
One stipulation that was
not part of the original ap-

county staff is that the per-

years. After two years, the
company would have to

county staff, the company's
attorney wrote that they
plan to make an average of
eight trips six days a week
to dump loads of between
5,000 and 6,000 gallons of
waste on the property.
The waste would likely
be spread at the rate of be-
tween six to eight loads of
liquid per acre per appli-
cation and, at that rate,
covering the entire prop-
erty would take about six to
12 months.

state 75.
The suspect made her
drive west on State Road 44
then south on U.S. Highway'
301 and kept telling her, "this,
is riot your fault," according
to the report.
During the ordeal, the car-
jacker wouldn't let the,
woman turn on the air condi-
tioner or roll the windows
down.
The woman told him that
she was going to run out of,
gas. When she told him she ,
didn't have any money, he hit'
her on the right side of her
face with a closed fist, ac-
cording to the report.
He then looked through'
her purse.
"The man also told her if,
she got pulled over he would'
kill her before anyone could
save her," according to the re-
port.
At one point, he told her to,
stop the car when there was
no one behind them so he
could urinate.
When she pulled over on
County Road 545 at a new
home construction site, the
suspect told her "not to be,
stupid and she would be fine:
and also he didn't want to,
hurt her," according to the re-
port.
The man stepped out and
leaned with one hand on the
door, and the woman fled in
the car, leaving him at the
construction site.
When she reached Thomas
Langley Medical Center in:
Sumterville, she called po-i
lice. Police searched the area
with K-9 units and a helicop-
ter but made no arrests.
The suspect is white, about
30 years old, approximately 6
feet tall, and 140 to 150
pounds. He has medium
length brown hair, yellow
teeth, and a "pitted face"
with no facial hair. He was.

Letter to the editor

The real truth of
global warming
Well we knew SECO would
dismiss global warming and
mans effects on it. Well Mr.
Barry Bowman I think you
should look at the Environ-
mental Protection Agency's
Web site because they and the
rest of us with common sense
know the' truth. Just like the
cigarette companies denied
that they caused cancer and
other health problems, they
even had scientists back them
up as well and we all know
how that turned out. Global
Warming according to the
EPA Web site has been on the
rise for longer than since
2000. They also state that
greenhouse gases are created
by man in the following sec-
tors:
Industrial sector 19.4 per-
cent
Transportation 27 percent
Electricity sector 33.7 per-
cent
With most sectors declining
in their GHG (greenhouse
gases) emissions except the
electricity sector which has
been on a steady rise from

30.2 percent in 1990 to 33.7
percent in 2006.
The U.S. contributes to the
world's GHG emissions 18
percent and is the second
largest contributor behind
China.
The GHG have been on the
rise since the early 1900s and
are still rising. Me personally
I think I will believe the ex-
perts and not big business
since we all know they hardly
ever tell the truth.
For the real truth about
global warming see it for
yourself at EPA's Web site
www. epa.gov/climate-
change/endangerment.html
and click the Technical Sup-
port Document for the Pro-
posed Findings PDF file to
see it all. Also check out the
environmental effects that we
have to look forward to in the
future like hotter heatwaves,
more floods, more droughts
and a lot more. This will open
your eyes to what is really
happening and how bad it
will get in the future. We have
to make a change for our fu-
ture and its time is now.

Hope is the focus of Relay

BRENDA LOCKLEAR
Staff Writer

It was just after 6 p.m. on Fri-.
day night and the Relay for Life
was on.
More than 70 cancer survivors
were ready to make their victory
lap around the track in Sumter-
ville and dozens of relay partic-
ipants were at the stage as the
ceremony opened.
The clouds grew darker and
came closer.
Committee chair Tanya
Mikeals took the microphone
and asked the crowd to take a
break for a few minutes as the
rain passed over. But in seconds,
before people even had a
chance to take cover under
tents, the rain came down.
With more than 20 teams on
the field and tents all around,
lightning cracked and the tem-
perature dropped. Winds bat-
tered everything in its path and
the rain turned icy as the small

shelters lifted from their sup-
ports and flew across the field.
People clung to each other, hud-
dled under the meager shelter
of canvas and nylon, holding
down everything they could.
I stood under the small sur-
vivor tent with Mikeals and two
other ladies. I should say
leaned. We all leaned, tucking
away from the storm and the
cold wind as it battered us, arms
stretched to hold onto alu-
minum pans and paper towels
and cameras.
Lots of people prayed. I did,
as well as survivors in the tent
and two kids hiding under a
banquet table.
When the rain finally stopped,
papers and forms and luminar-
ias were lying in puddles more
than a dozen tents had been
blown away, some mangled. The
track was soaked and so were
the people. A relay lay in ruins.
But not
Instead, participants had a

different answer. A different
message it seems they found
just what they had come seek-
ing.
"Hope" said one relayer who
pointed up to the clearing sky.
And hope it was.
They were hoping the clouds
would go away. They were hop-
ing for a cure for cancer.
While all but six of the teams
headed out by midnight, the ma-
jority stuck it out for more than
five hours after the storm -
plenty of victory for the event -
the survivors even made their,
victory lap. It was more than an
hour late, but they made it.
Even the "HOPE" light that
burns on the field shorted out
from rain, but the real hope
never did.
Wet and windblown and
minus shelter, they clung to it
and they stayed.

"How do I decide which funeral
hometo call when the time comes?"

Aside from the requirement that all funeral homes be
licensed by the state, some basic questions you might ask
when selecting a funeral home include: Are they flexible
enough to handle your specific needs? Are decisions made
locally or from an out-of-town corporate office? Are they
full service? Do they sub-contract services such as
cremation or do they provide these options on-site?
Everyone has different priorities and questions about
funeral pre-planning. We invite your questions and we
will respect your priorities. Please call us for a no cost, no
obligation, no pressure appointment to get the facts on
how you can benefit from funeral pre-planning.

South Sumter shafted when Nature Coast cancels

LARRY_ JUGGL----
Times Correspondent

South Sumter High School
may end up losing as much as
$10,000 in revenue because
Brooksville Nature Coast
Technical High School can-
celled their scheduled foot-
ball game at Bushnell in
September.
South Sumter High's foot-
ball team was scheduled to
host Nature Coast in what
would have been a sure sell-
out game Sept 11 at the
Raiders field.

Hernando County Super-.
-inTendfenT of Schools Super-
intendent Wayne Alexander
directed that Nature Coast
must play all Hernando
County schools and Nature
Coast needed to schedule a
game with Springstead High
School.
The contracts were al-
ready signed between Na-
ture Coast and South Sumter
High School to play Sept 11.
Because of the develop-
ment, South Sumter no
longer has a game scheduled
for that date and may end up
playing nine games instead

of the normal 10.
"The issue is the fact that
virtually every Central
Florida high school team has
a 10-game schedule," said
South Sumter High coach
Inman Sherman. "We have a
hole in our schedule. That's
$10,000 we Would need.
When we play them, it's a
sellout.
"We weren't considered
when the decision was made.
What happened to us is not
important"
It is unlikely that South
Sumter will be able to find
another team to fill that hole
at this time.
"When you sign the con-
tract, it is supposed to be
binding," Sherman said.
Officials at Springstead
High and Nature Coast
worked out a game between
those schools for Sept. 11.
South Sumter High School
was not consulted.
The Raiders were left out
and Sherman is not at all
happy about this develop-
ment.
"It's real disappointing,"
he said. "It's not very profes-
sional.
"We will live through it.
"We were one of the few
schools that offered to play
them and we were the first

one they dumped."
Nature Coast has had all
kinds of football trouble in
the past year. The Hernando
County football team was
fined $10,000 and kept out of
postseason play because of a
brawl involving Nature Coast
and Groveland South Lake at
the Nov. 7 game.
Nature Coast also is cur-
rently without a head foot-
ball coach. Jamie Joyner
recently resigned after
charges surfaced that he al-
legedly acted improperly to-
wards an 18-year-old Nature
Coast student.
Sherman said he is trying
to fill that scheduling hole.
"We are working on some
things," he said. "It had a
kind of ripple effect on sev-
eral schools. Because of their
actions, there are six schools
involved in this."
Nature Coast beat South
Sumter 41-14 in 2008 and the
crowd would have been huge
if the game were played.
The game might have be-
come one of the great Central
Florida high school football
rivalries.
"The public loved the
game," Sherman said. "I
think they (Nature Coast) will
tell you it was their best
crowd." .

Humane

( ( he luckiest
day of my life
was when the
Humane Society/SPCA of
Sumter County rescued
me.
I now get to run and play
and I thoroughly enjoy life.
I am all about fun! I am
looking for a forever family
that I can share my love
and devotion with, and
show them what Schip-
perke fun is all about!"
"But yesterday, I found
out that a knot on my back
leg is cancer I need an ex-
pensive operation to have
my leg amputated, or I will

die. I don't want to die! I
just got rescued and things
are starting to look up for
me now. I won't mind run-
ning around with three
legs. I still can have a lot of
fun, and I still have so
much love to share. After
all, my love is in my heart,
not in my leg!"
"So I am asking everyone
out there to please, help
me. The Humane Soci-
ety/SPCA needs your dona-
tions for .my operation.
Please send any amount
you can spare to the Hu-
mane Society/SPCA, PO.
Box 67, Lake Panasoffkee,
FL 33538. Mark the dona-
tion for Sheena that's me.
My operation cannot wait,
so please hurry!"
Sheena is a young ener-
getic Schipperke who loves
life. Schipperke's are
known fpr their loyalty and
devotion to family mem-
bers. They will fearlessly

protect their home and
loved ones. They are excel-
lent with children and
great playmates. The breed
is very intelligent and ex-
tremely curious. Because
of these traits, they need a
secured fenced in yard,
and when going for walks,
no. matter how well be-
haved, it is recommended
that they should always be

on leash.
Sheena is a beautiful
Schipperke with a very
sweet and happy personal-
ity.
Her veterinarian says
the cancer has not spread,
but we must remove the leg
soon. She deserves a
chance at a good life.
Please help us give her
that chance.
