BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsReports of gravesite robberies at the Ridgelawn Cemetery have surfaced of late, with one Clewiston resident claiming that at least $1,000 worth of items were allegedly stolen from his brother’s gravesite last month, the Hendry County Sheriff’s Of ce (HCSO) reports. On Sept. 20, a resident led a report with HCSO deputies, after he found 10 cement pavers were taken from his brother’s gravesite. According to the report, the resident told deputies the pavers -valued at approximately $10 each -had been removed from the site, but the decorative items had been put back in place. The resident also reported that a temporary, copper marker on his dad’s gravesite had also been taken. The resident reportedly spoke with the cemetery’s supervisor, who told the resident that maintenance crews had not removed any of the items that were taken. BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsWith less than 20 days before the General Election, candidates are making their last-ditch efforts to reach out to potential voters before early voting begins Oct. 20 and before Election Day Nov. 4. Perhaps one of the most contentious items on this year’s ballot is Amendment 2, which, if passed, would legalize the use of medical marijuana for qualifying patients with certain debilitating medical conditions. The amendment gained traction early in the submittal process and boasted a nearly 90 percent approval rating in a July poll from Connecticut’s Quinnipiac University. But the amendment has come under re in recent weeks, with those opposed pointing out potential loopholes they say could lead to a pill-mill-like scenario and the de facto legalization of recreational marijuana. Though the amendment calls for the legalization of medical marijuana for patients suffering from debilitating diseases, such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, HIV, AIDS, hepatitis C, ALS, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and glaucoma, the amendment does not limit the issuance of a medical marijuana card to individuals suffering from only those diseases. Instead, the amendment leaves room for physicians to issue identi cation cards to an individual with any other condition “for which a physician believes BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsThe Board of County Commissioners convened in Clewiston’s City Hall for their regular meeting Tuesday night. MALCOLM FORBES BY JOHANNA GONZALEZ Special to e Clewiston NewsOn Friday, Oct. 10, the Clewiston Tigers played against the Bishop Verot Vikings in a nonconference game. The night started with a beautifully balanced atmosphere as the rst play of the game was fumbled snap by Bishop Verot’s quarterback, which senior Luke Bradford recovered at the 30yard line. On offense, senior Lenoriss Gaines caught a pass from junior Davis Witt for a rst down, taking the Tigers to rst and goal. Making the rst touchdown of the game was senior Tyrone Washington with a two-yard touchdown run. The very next defensive play for the Tigers was another fumble that the Tigers immediately recovered on the 20-yard line. Witt completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior Kyree Marshall taking the score to 14-0. On the following kickoff, the Tigers had excellent coverage stopping Bishop Verot at the 10-yard line, and with a holding call, moved the Vikings to the ve-yard line. On the ensuing play, Bishop Verot’s running back fumbled again and the Tigers recover on the 10-yard line. Junior Maurice Murphy scored a one-yard touchdown, and the Tigers made an impressive three touchdowns in less than four minutes. The next offensive series for the Vikings had a similar result. The Viking ball carrier fumbled yet again and Luke Bradford’s second fumble recovery of the night was returned for a 70-yard touchdown. The next Viking possession went a little better, as they were able to move the ball and get a couple of rst downs, but disaster struck again. The Viking backup quarterback fumbled and Marshall returned it for a 56-yard touchdown. The very next offensive play for the Vikings resulted in an interception. Gaines, on defense, caught an intercepted pass at the 33-yard line. At the end of the rst quarter, the Tigers held a 42-0 lead over Bishop Verot. In the rst quarter alone, the Vikings turned the ball over six times, but it wasn’t so much as the Tigers forcing fumbles or jumping routes, as it was the Vikings not holding on to the ball. Washington would later score a 54-yard touchdown run, resulting in his third touchdown of the game and bringing the score to a 49-0. Bishop Verot was nally able to move the ball on offense when Tigers second team players started to rotate into the game. The Viking’s only score of the half came on an impressive 45-yard eld goal that would have been good from 55. Before the half was over, sophomore Zac Mosley was able to punch in another Tiger touchdown and made the score 56-3. The second half of the game was played under the mercy rule, so the clock kept running. The game quickly ran out and the Tigers left with a decisive 56-12 victory. Next, the Tigers take on Lake Placid in a conference game in Dragon territory on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. Tigers Defeat Bishop Verot 56-12Mercy rule imposed during second half as Tigers dominate Vikings COURTESY PHOTO

SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martin’s ChurchThe nature of the crisis, the nature of the disease and the potential for its being spread to the rest of the world makes the “hurry-up” approach essential because of the widespread perceived threat of what this disease could mean to economies, nations, resources, devastation here at home and world-wide. Recent sporadic appearances in the U. S. and the drastic responses taken make this an issue for everyone. TV images showed a man being taken off of a plane by personnel dressed in full-cover hazmat suits; he apparently coughed and made a jest about having Ebola. It certainly isn’t something where anybody will regard it as a laughing matter. A national health director speaks of it as a tragedy comparable to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980’s. As I thought about the AIDS epidemic (and I remember it), I recalled that you don’t hear as much about it these days as we did then. With the epidemic came research and then new medications, and then the extension of life for victims, and then an abatement. I remember in my youth the “polio epidemic” and the precautions our family took; avoid public places as much as possible, stay away from crowded areas, keep up the regular practices of sanitation. One day, our school announced over the PA system that Jonas Salk’s vaccine proved effective; later to be followed by Dr. Sabin’s oral vaccine and a great advance brought collective sighs of relief across the nation and around the world. Probably, most of the young people today have no idea about just what is an “iron lung.” I chalk it all up to God’s revelation through the healing sciences; insights and creative solutions that come from God because He has created us to be creative and inspired. He has created us to see the problems that face us and then to solve them. Hebrews recalls the eighth Psalm; “You made his a little lower than the angels, you crowned him with glory and honor and put everything under his feet (Psalm 8:5; Hebrews 2:7, 9).” I take a broad view of “everything” to mean everything! We have within us the potential to overcome the victors in the ghts against tragic diseases; the ones capable of bringing peace to a troubled world, the ability to solve our economic problems, the capacity to use our resources and energy in a wise and ef cient manner. Time? Yes, it may take all kinds of time to do these things. The key, as I see the advances made over time and throughout history, come with understanding as the scripture puts it, how “we are fearfully and wonderfully made.” We are made to carry out God’s purposes for us; to help one another, to use our creativity for the good of all, to devote our energies to peace and good will, to respect and adore the Creator-Sustainer-Redeemer; and to give thanks to those who make headway against the problems that face humanity. One of our Church groups has as a motto, “I can’t do everything, but I can do something,” and that’s their calling. It’s our calling too. Encourage those who tackle great problems, support those who are dedicated to healing of all of the ills of humanity, give thanks for the gains we’ve made to date and, by the way, do our part, too. that the medical use of marijuana would likely outweigh the potential health risks” for that individual. Opponents worry that because of this wording, anyone who wants pot will get it. The amendment also affords caregivers 21 years of age or older the right to assist a patient’s medical use of marijuana -another point of contention for the opposition who say the caregiver designation should hold more requirements than a minimum age. People United for Medical Marijuana, the organization that helped get the amendment on the ballot, said the Department of Health will be responsible for “issuing detailed regulations regarding quali cation requirements for caregivers” if the amendment passes. The opposition’s argument, People United said, “requires the reader to assume that the state will implement Amendment 2 in an irresponsible way.” People United also offered a rebuttal to the pill mill scenario, saying “the physician examination requirement, the application process with the Department of Health, the regulatory structure that would be implemented by that same body and subsequent protective laws that may be passed by the legislature would make this scenario extremely unlikely.” As the election approaches, a University of North Florida poll released Oct. 9 shows a drop in approval rating among Florida voters since the July Quinnipiac poll, with roughly 67 percent saying they would vote yes on Amendment 2. The amendment needs at least 60 percent of the vote in order to become law. Local of cials weighed in on the issue, including four of the ve candidates running for Clewiston City Commission: incumbents Kristine Petersen and Phillip Roland, Sherida Ridgdill and Jerry Cochrane. Commissioner Petersen, whose friend’s son suffers from seizures, told The Clewiston News she is in favor of utilizing certain forms of the drug for treatment, but the amendment, as it is written, is “faulty.” “When I look at what my friend’s child goes through and research shows us that the oil from certain cannabis plants would be helpful for the condition, I would like to see that possibility of treatment,” Commissioner Petersen wrote in an email to The Clewiston News. “My personal belief is that there needs to be tight control as to who is able to utilize any bene cial components derived from the cannabis and who the entities are that will be lling a doctors prescription for the components.” Mayor Phillip Roland echoed roughly the same sentiment, saying he opposed the amendment as it is written, but asked, “Is [marijuana] any worse than alcohol?” The Mayor also added that if the amendment did pass, it would be a “money-maker.” Candidate Jerry Cochrane said he opposed the amendment because of the potential availability to teenagers and candidate Sherida Ridgdill said she opposed the amendment because she does not support amendments to the state’s constitution. “Do it under the legislative branch,” she said. Hendry County Sheriff Steve Whidden publicly opposed the amendment in an online video -falling in line with the Florida Sheriffs Association that opposes the amendment -and Clewiston Police Chief Don Gutshall said he also opposes it. “There may be a place for medical marijuana but this Amendment 2 is not it. This is about legalizing marijuana possession in the state of Florida,” said Chief Gutshall. “This state has just fought a horri c battle with the pill mills ... and all we’re doing is turning 180 degrees and going right back into that same garden.” In terms of money, Chief Gutshall said most government agencies would probably bene t nancially from the legalization of marijuana, in general, but believes Florida families would be better off if the drug were never legalized. 11 Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee October 16, 2014 ARREST REPORT This column lists arrests, not convictions, unless otherwise stated. The outreach would consist of calling, emailing or texting participating patients to remind them to schedule routine and follow-up appointments with their doctors. The ultimate goal of the program is to reduce the cost of Medicaid to the county, utilizing the theory that if patients went to their primary care physician, took their medications on time as directed and made it to follow-up appointments, then the cost of the patient ultimately goes down. CSI would collect data on the participating patients, complying with HIPPAA guidelines, which would be used to justify a proposed legislative bill to the state of Florida. The bill, if passed, would provide cost savings to entities that reduce utilization of Medicaid, which could mean cost savings to Hendry County. Hendry County would bear no hard costs unless the cost savings are realized, in which case 60 percent of the savings would be retained by CSI and the remaining 40 percent would be retained with the county.Seminole Tribe vs. Hendry CountyCounty Attorney Mark Lapp advised the commission that if Florida Power and Light (FPL) and the McDaniel Ranch led an appeal to the court ruling that prohibited FPL from building a power plant near the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s reservation in Immokalee, the county would also le an appeal. The deadline to appeal would pass before the next commission meeting at the end of the month, and commissioners voted 5-0 to move forward with the appeal if FPL and McDaniel Ranch also moved forward. Burial Plots for VeteransCommissioners approved a measure that would allow veterans to obtain a burial plot in any Hendry County cemetery at no cost, provided they have a proper DD-214 form. Previously, veterans were provided no-cost burial plots in the designated Veterans Section of the Ridgelawn Cemetery in Clewiston, while veterans wanting to be buried in the Fort Denaud Cemetery were provided no-cost burial plots in any location, as there was not a designated Veterans Section. The vote would now allow veterans to be buried in any location within the Ridgelawn, Fort Denaud or Harlem cemeteries at no cost. Commissioner Janet Taylor asked County Clerk Barbara Butler whether or not veterans who unknowingly paid for burial plots within the cemeteries could be offered a refund, to which the clerk responded no, as such payments were not retroactive.
