BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsA Clewiston man was arrested last month and charged with felony murder after he was accused of stabbing another man in a church parking lot, Clewiston Police reported. Encarnacion Gonzales Jr., 26, was arrested on Sept. 17 after witnesses placed him at the scene of a large ght that occurred in the parking lot of Iglesia Vida Nueva on Sept. 14 at around 11 a.m, according to a report released by the Clewiston Police Department. Two individuals involved in the altercation reported that Gonzales exited a dark blue or black Nissan sedan while a large group of people were alBY JOHANNA GONZALEZ Special to e Clewiston NewsThe Clewiston High School (CHS) Tigers' rst district game against Avon Park was a success, with a winning score of 51-7. The Tigers' defense was swarming the entire game and the Avon Park offense was unable to really put a drive together. CHS started the game on offense and junior quarterback Davis Witt hit senior Angelo Tolbert with the rst touchdown pass of the game, a 15yard pass. On the rst defensive series, the Tigers forced a fumble, which was quickly recovered by Avon Park. On the following play, a Tiger defender levied a huge hit, knocking down the Avon Park ball carrier and causing his helmet to travel 15 yards in the air. On the very next play, the Avon Park punter fumbled the snap and tried to run the ball. The Tigers quickly swarmed and tackled the punter for a safety, bringing the score to 9-0 Tigers. Each student constructed his building at home and then brought the nished product to school, where it was strategically placed in a large-scale model of the city. Some of the buildings included the Clewiston Utilities building, Hendry Regional Medical Center, Church of God and, of course, Eastside Elementary School. The students learned how to build a city from the ground up during the project, constructing roads before placing the buildings, traf c signs and landscaping. They also learned why communities need certain buildings, like the police station, utility building and hospital. Students utilized many different materials to construct their buildings, including shoe boxes, construction paper, magazine cutouts and pictures. They even collected twigs and leaves from outside their school to make the trees that line many of the roads and buildings. The students were excited about the project and each had his own story behind his building of choice. "I like to go to my Sunday School," said Raul, who constructed the Church of God near the center of the city. Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States. It is also one of the leading causes of cancer death among women of all races. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 200,000 new cases of breast cancer are reported nationwide each year and more than 40,000 women died from the disease. About 11 percent of all new cases of breast cancer in the U.S. are found in women that are younger than 45 years of age. It is estimated that one of every eight adult women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. When breast cancer starts out, it is too small to feel and does not cause signs and symptoms. As it grows, however, breast cancer can cause changes in how the breast looks or feels. Symptoms may include: New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit). Thickening or swelling of part of the breast. Irritation or dimpling of breast skin. Redness or aky skin in the nipple area or the breast. Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area. Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood. Any change in the size or the shape of the breast. Pain in any area of the breast. Breast cancer can be preventable with early detection. It is recommended that all women from the ages 50 to 74 should have a mammogram every two years, and women between the ages of 40 and 50 years should talk with their health care provider about when to start screening. It may be necessary for you to have earlier screening or more frequent screening if you have a family history of breast cancer. Please get to know your family health history. If a close family member (such as your mother, father, grandmother, sister, or aunt) has had breast cancer, the risk for other family members getting breast cancer may be higher. If you think you may be at increased risk, talk to your health care provider. It may be decided that you should be tested earlier or more frequently than the standard recommendations. Are you worried about the cost? CDC offers free or low-cost mammograms. For more information about breast cancer and low-cost mamorgrams, go to www.cdc. gov/cancer/breast. BY BUTCH WILSON Clewiston MuseumThe calloused ngers of the carver moved across the cypress dugout with the nesse of a maestro pianist, stroking and tapping the smooth, polished sides for tones or aws that would indicate hull weaknesses. Finding no defects in his craftsmanship, the carver now gazed at the high, protruding bow that arched downward, forming two, long, perpendicular sides that met at the stern. Its high bow and lean, graceful sides were birthed for seaworthiness and speed on an inland sea called Lake Okeechobee. Who were these ancient people that once traveled on liquid highways in a watery world now called the Everglades? Spanish explorers, who met these people centuries ago in the vast everglades, documented their encounters. However, the sparse information that later scholars gleaned from these too few Spanish journals sometimes created more questions than answers. Only in recent years, have archaeologists started lling in some of the missing links on these mysterious people that time forgot. Come join us at the Clewiston Museum as archeologist Katie Smith shares discoveries from the ongoing research she is conducting on the skeletal biology of the Belle Glade Culture. Her ndings are based on the Belle Glade skeletal collections held at the Smithsonian Institution. Miss Smith’s interest in archaeology started at the age of 12, with Classical/Biblical Archaeology and particularly ancient languages. She later pursued a career in archaeology through undergraduate coursework in Palestinian, GrecoRoman, Ancient Hebrew, Greek and Latin archaeology. Miss Smith is currently pursuing her second Master’s degree as a graduate student at Florida Atlantic University. This free and informative program is made possible by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council. Refreshments will be served after the program, so come join us at the Clewiston Museum for a relaxing and entertaining evening on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. Please contact the Clewiston Museum at 863-983-2870 or email us at clewistonmuseum@embarqmail.com for questions regarding this event. Dawkins, Tweets, and Downs SyndromeBY DR. TODD BUCK First Baptist Church of ClewistonThe atheist Richard Dawkins is in the news again. It seems he cannot keep his ngers from the twitter machine. This time "The God Delusion" author immersed himself in hot water for stating (by tweet) that it would be immoral to not abort a baby if the mother knew that her unborn child had Downs Syndrome. He wrote: "Abort it and try again. It would be immoral to bring it into the world if you have the choice." This week, he apologized, saying that of course he respected other people's wishes. One wonders -given the worldview that Dawkins represents -that if evolution really is true, as he suggests, and the universe is a cosmic accident, then his own brain (and not Downs Syndrome) is proof positive that evolution makes mistakes. Given enough time, non-conscious material is capable of evolving into a pompous, hateful and stubborn crackpot who should have retired from public pronouncements while he still had the chance to avoid embarrassing himself. Dawkins, in 2014, has become a gure of mockery, a man so convinced that he possesses God-like powers of omniscience that he can't understand why everyone's getting angry at him for pointing out the "obvious." Why won't we all just learn how to think!? Thinking is all it takes! Especially, if we just surrender and think like him! Dawkins has become a man so convinced of his intellectual superiority that he believes the one domain in which he happens to be an expert -science -is the only legitimate way of acquiring knowledge. All of his outbursts in recent years follow from this belief: he understands the scienti c method as a universally applicable way of understanding not just the physical world but literally everything else, as well. Hence, his constant complaint that those appalled by his bigoted and hate- lled ramblings must be religionists of the Dark Ages. In his review of "The God Delusion," Terry Eagleton remarked: "Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology." But it is not just theology that Dawkins dismisses as inferior to his own scienti c mind, but also art, history, philosophy and human logic. To him, all of the humanities are expendable window-dressings, and even the emotions of fellow human beings are byproducts of natural selection that seem a nuisance. If Dawkins can't see it, then it doesn't exist, and anyone trying to describe it to him is delusional and possibly dangerous. One might hope that as he gets older and crankier, that the process will end with a breakthrough and a glorious deathbed conversion. But if there's one thing Dawkins has tried to impress upon us, it's that miracles don't exist. So perhaps we should do him the courtesy of not holding our breath. I’m 35 and the mother of three amazing kids. I have dental disease that has spread, causing most of my teeth to decay and break (many at the gum line), and have been battling horrible dental abscesses almost monthly for several years now. Between the abscesses and not being able to eat due to constant mouth pain it’s reached the point of making me deathly sick but I continue to go to work every day. My throat swells until it’s almost completely closed, my neck gets stiff and I get horrible headaches and body aches. Each abscess is worse than the last one and I can’t afford to go to a dentist because I live paycheck to paycheck. There is no help in my area for people like me with dental problems. I’m asking for help to get them all pulled and have dentures put in so I can continue to work. I have no healthy teeth left. My last ER visit (my only option) was on the morning of 8/12 with an abscess that was hurting all the way to my ear, my entire right jaw was swollen and my throat once again was swelling. I only weighed 89.3 lbs that day due to not being able to eat because of my teeth. The only thing the ER can do is give me antibiotics and, as that day went on, I had horrible body aches and a headache only on the right side(where the abscess is). I was afraid that the infection was attacking my entire body. I am asking for everyone’s help to assist me with getting these dental issues taken care of because I am sincerely afraid that my body won’t be able to ght off the next infection and that it will spread to other parts of my body. I don’t like asking for help, I’m a hard working woman, but I have no other choice. Thanks in advance to those of you willing to help me. The drive was led by junior Maurice Murphy and senior Tyrone Washington, who capped the drive off with an eightyard touchdown run, upping the score to 16-0. The Tigers swiftly stopped Avon Park again on the next defensive series of the game. Spain led the Tigers on the next drive with runs for 17, 14 and 19 yards. The drive was capped off by sophomore Zac Mosley’s touchdown run, bringing the score to 23-0. The Tigers again were able to score against the porous Avon Park offense, when Witt hit a wide open senior Lenoriss Gaines for a 29-yard touchdown pass, pushing the Tiger’s commanding lead to 29-0. The very next defensive play for the Tigers saw junior Andre Taylor recovering a fumble at the 11-yard-line. Murphy quickly put the Tigers back in the end zone with a six-yard touchdown run, upping the score to 36-0. On the next offensive series, Witt hit Tolbert again for Witt’s third touchdown pass of the game, a catch for 36 yards, ending the half with a score of 43-0. The second half featured some of the second team players, and Freshman Kla’Menta Jones took advantage of the opportunity. Jones had a long, 60-yard run to the 10-yardline and a ve-yard touchdown run for the Tigers to start the second half. Avon Park was nally able to score against the tough Tiger defense with a four-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to the Tigers who ended the game with a score of 51-7. After pummeling Avon Park 51-7, Tigers players were elated to be interviewed. Witt was questioned about how he evaluated himself, commenting, “I felt like we played really well, everything needs a little improvement, but overall I am happy with how we played.” Witt also mentioned he missed a couple of plays, but he can always aim to work harder. Head Coach Pete Walker also weighed in on the game. When asked who he thought the overall player of the game was, he said proudly, “So many of the players played well, blocking tackles, always playing well. And the second half I thought they did well, but did give up a few plays.” This Friday, Oct. 10, the Tigers will travel to Bishop Verot in Fort Myers, where they will take on the Vikings in a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. TIGERSContinued From Page 1 “SO MANY OF THE PLAYERS PLAYED WELL, BLOCKING TACKLES, ALWAYS PLAYING WELL. In uenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death. "Getting vaccinated is the single best way to protect yourself and your family against in uenza," said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John H. Armstrong. "I encourage all Floridians to get your u vaccination before Halloween, wash your hands often and stay home when you are sick." Everyone aged six months and older should get the u vaccine. Vaccination to prevent in uenza is particularly important for people who are at high risk of serious complications from in uenza, such as pregnant women, children under the age of ve and people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease). It can take up to two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against in uenza virus infection. In the meantime, you are still at risk for getting the u. That is why it is important to get vaccinated early in the fall, before the u season really gets under way. Symptoms of the u may include headache, fever, severe cough, runny nose or body aches. Contact your health care provider immediately if symptoms appear. The Florida Department of Health offers the following prevention tips: Get vaccinated every year since u viruses change. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth since germs are spread this way. Avoid close contact with sick people. If you or your children are sick with a ulike illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone, unless you need medical care. Check with your healthcare provider, local pharmacies and your local county health department to see where u vaccine is available. Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were unchanged compared to the same day one year ago and are 3.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 13.8 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 5.8 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago. “We’ve begun to see retail prices eroding at a much faster rate in the last few days across a good portion of the country,” said GasBuddy. com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “48 out of 50 states saw average prices decline in the last week, with some of the largest declines in the Midwest, where more and more stations are slipping under the $3/gallon barrier. Motorists should be seeing continued drops in gas prices across much of the United States in the week ahead as gas prices catch up to the recent decrease in crude oil prices.” U.S. Sugar CorporationU.S. Sugar’s 84th annual sugarcane harvest, scheduled to begin Tuesday evening, was delayed until mid-afternoon Wednesday, October 1st and got off to an extremely slow and soggy start due to excessive rainfall. “More than a week of rain dumped nearly eight inches across the farming area, with standing water in many of our elds, said Judy Sanchez, senior director, corporate communications and public affairs. “The wet conditions will slow and hamper harvest activities until the weather clears up.” Harvest began Wednesday shortly after 2 p.m. on a limited basis in Palm Beach County, with no harvest activities in Hendry or Glades counties due to wet conditions. The Clewiston Sugar Factory began processing the rst railcars of sugarcane at 6:36 p.m. Wednesday evening. Both harvesting and processing operations will run 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the 2014-15 harvest season. The harvest season is expected to run until early April 2015. “We’ve had good weather for most of this growing season and are expecting a good crop,” said Judy Sanchez. “Unfortunately, sugar prices have been severely depressed for the last few years due to a surge of unneeded, subsidized Mexican sugar into our marketplace. Over two million tons of subsidized Mexican sugar has ooded the U.S. markets, a signi cant portion of it produced at Mexican governmentowned facilities.” Sanchez said that U.S. Sugar had sold all of its 2014-15 sugar at lower prices caused by the ood of subsidized Mexican imports and would have to rely on volume and ef ciencies during the harvesting, milling and re ning process to retain pro tability during this crop. U.S. Sugar and its independent growers are projected to produce approximately 7.23 million tons of sugarcane with approximately 6.5 million tons of sugarcane to be processed at the Clewiston Sugar Factory that is projected to produce approximately 743,403 tons of raw sugar. Through the acquisitions of Duda in 2012 and, more recently, Knight Management, U.S. Sugar also will be sending sugarcane to all three of the other sugar factories in the Glades this year. Sanchez noted that U.S. Sugar’s 2013-2014 sugarcane crop produced 759,378 tons of sugar, nearly 40 million gallons of molasses and 192,563 MW-hrs of electricity. “While Florida sugar farmers are busy gearing up for the harvest season, we are also continuing our partnership in Everglades restoration by cleaning the water on the farms every single day,” Sanchez said. “Our on-farm clean up measures, called Best Management Practices (BMPs), have reduced the phosphorus in water leaving the farms by 63% this year. That’s more than twice the 25% requirement, and farmers have averaged a 55% reduction for nearly 20 years,” said Sanchez.
