BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsFor the second year in a row, U.S. Sugar Corporation donated $10,000 towards the Clewiston High School and Middle School band programs. The donation was given to the Band Boosters Organization -the support system behind the band train -who will delegate the money between the needs of the high school and middle school programs. Before the donations from U.S. Sugar started, the Clewiston band program was nearly non-existent. The program, according to band insiders, was a force to be reckoned with in the 1980s and 90s before the controversial ring of the band director in 1996. Reportedly, the band director chose to take his students to a competition in Germany -a plan that had been in the works for nearly a year -instead of staying home to play the homecoming game, which fell on the same day as the competition. The director's decision would eventually cost him his job and the program essentially dismantled after the debacle. BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsOf cials left with some direction and a sense of what the East Hendry County Recreation Board will look like, at least for the next 17 months, after the joint meeting between county and city commissioners on May 13. The meeting brought the Board of County Commissioners together with Clewiston City Commissioners in an informal workshop setting, where of cials and commissioners discussed the future of East County Rec. County Administrator Charles Chapman took control of the meeting early on to discuss what the East Hendry County Recreation Board would look like. As of now, the board serves as an advisory board only and has no governing authority. The county and the city of Clewiston control the money and make decisions, together, on how to spend it. Should the East Rec Board gain power and move towards a governing board, they would control the money and the decisions. Chapman stressed the importance of knowing "what kind of animal" the BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsMore than a dozen graduating seniors at Clewiston High School (CHS) received scholarships ranging from $250 to $6,000 on behalf of the Rotary Club on May 12. The scholarships will help 17 seniors in their pursuit of higher education during their four-year stint at university. All of the students presented with scholarship money have been accepted into a college or university for the 2014/15 school year. The students will also be staying relatively close to home, with all 17 attending school in Florida. The students gathered inside the Clewiston Country Club on Monday and were presented their scholarships during the Rotary luncheon. Along with the Rotary Club members, CHS Principal George Duckstein, Assistant Principal Roberto Sanchez and guidance counselor Sherrie Llossas were in attendance to support their students and their incredible academic achievements. "These students are the best that Clewiston High School has to offer in the graduating class of 2014," said Rotary member Joe Whitehead, as he went down the list of students and their accomplishments. COMMUNITY NEWS AND INFORMATION East Rec board would be, but did not get an answer until shortly before the meeting adjourned. In the meantime, county commissioners and city commissioners debated the fees being assessed on city and non-city residents, and the buying power that those fees will give East Rec. City commissioners want to see the fee assessed at $150 per household in all areas of eastern Hendry County, including the city of Clewiston. County commissioners Janet Taylor and Karson Turner said they would not raise the fees on their constituents “today,” but if they could show them the bene t of the $100 assessment, they may be willing to raise them “tomorrow.” Commissioners on both sides of the table agreed to bring back a budget using the fees as they stand now, $100 for all county residents except for Montura, which pays $40 per household, and a budget using the $150 fee for all. Some commissioners said they wanted to see what could be done with the original assessment and suggested operating at that budget only, cutting programs and services in order to do so. The question of whether or not the county should pay 40 percent of the recreation budget for its “40-percent users” was answered, in part, by Chapman, who said the decision was made to split the current contribution from the county through the East Rec assessment, which totals $175,000, in two, with one half earmarked towards maintenance and repairs and the other half earmarked for programs and other services. Plus, the county would increase the amount of money it is already giving the city by about $50,000 to go towards each of the halves. By the end of the meeting, commissioners agreed that they wanted to see how the recreation programs would look using the current assessments -which would mean cutting out some programs offered. They also agreed that the East Rec Board would operate as is for the next 17 months until the end of scal year 2015. At that time, the two commissions could adjust the power of the East Rec Board when they have a better idea of how East Rec works and how it operates. Three Florida Department of Education employees were recently honored with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Patriot Award. This regional award is presented to employers who support members of the National Guard or Reserve and their families through a wide range of measures, including exible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment and granting leaves of absence if needed. Career and Adult Education Chancellor Rod Duckworth, Kathleen Taylor and Eric Owens were recognized for their efforts. "As we do our important work here in the department, day in and day out, it's easy to forget that some of our colleagues spend their time away from work in reserve units of the military, defending our rights and freedoms," said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. "Employees who have past and present military experience are very valuable to our organization. They are disciplined, skilled and have a strong work ethic. They display pride, leadership and responsibility. I'm very proud of the three supervisors recognized today for their support of the reservists employed at DOE." Peters, who has worked with the Department of Education since 2012, said he nominated the individuals in his of ce because of their "overwhelming understanding, support and responsiveness of the needs of the United States Air Force Reserves." He said the support his spouse received while he was deployed was an added factor. "Supporting our staff members as they perform their military responsibilities is an honor as well as duty that we gladly accept," Duckworth said during the event held on the top oor of the Turlington Building. Mother’s Day: Not a Day but a MiracleBY REV. SAMUEL S. THOMAS, PH. D.+ Saint Martins ChurchYes, Mother’s Day has passed, but not motherhood. We celebrate, then more likely than not, forget for another year. Parenthood stays with us all throughout the year and I have re ected on it at many times during my life. We carry with us the lessons in our genes and souls that living with a parent brings; and mainly those lessons from our mothers who spend the greater part of their time with us. The Gospel of Luke (1:26ff) tells about a young girl, Mary, who is called by God to be a mother; not just any mother but the mother of Jesus. First, there is apprehension, ”How can this be (v.34)” and then the reminder “Nothing is impossible with God (v. 37)” Then comes her declaration “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said (v.38).” I have seen many times the coming of the realization that something very, very special is going to take place in a family when a child is to be born and being mother becomes more than a distant dream. Many times I have heard of “the miracle of birth” and the realization that we who share in the gift of parenthood do indeed participate in a miracle. God seems to select mothers and fathers and then, miraculously, calls them to use their skills and abilities to raise those He entrusts to them. Most striking to me was Mary’s response to learning she would be a mother: “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” The realization that motherhood is so very, very special is re ected in those words. Mary and all mothers share with God in His creation of life; nurturing of life, shaping bodies and minds and souls of those He entrusts with this creative nature He gives them. For those few years that we serve as parents, we work alongside of God in His creative process. Mothers are there to support, encourage, defend and protect, comfort, love, be there. They are the ones that make it all happen; birthdays and holidays, repairs on torn clothing, nding a few extra dollars for a baseball glove or bicycle, tempering reactions by impatient fathers and cushioning the blows when things go wrong. I see the parallel to what God does for us all in what mothers do. We pray to “Our Father…” and He certainly is; but His qualities extend beyond many of the roles attributed to His earthly counterparts. Mothers too recognize that “I am the Lord’s servant” and bring those qualities that are God-like in many ways to God’s children. My own mother turns 100 years old in a few weeks; I am her oldest son and have seen her perhaps the longest of any of her family now. I never cease to marvel at her determination and tenacity; her many skills and abilities and her living through many tumultuous times in history and taking them all in her stride. With all of them, she is rst and foremost “mother” and carries her role as I envision Mary carried hers; “I am the Lord’s servant” and she has been that servant to her children and grandchildren as God has called her. No doubt your mother is that person too with those qualities that are worthy of celebrating more than one Sunday a year. May you take some time to remember and say “Thank you” – words can be so inadequate, but mothers have a way of understanding what is truly meant by them. Give thanks to God for them, too. My words of thanksgiving are often inadequate to Him as well; but I know He understands – He’s shown me that he does in that woman who has been with me from the beginning.Christian Fellowship ScholarshipCLEWISTON — Five separate $500 general scholarships will be awarded to local students. Pool of Clewiston; nephew, Jim Spratt (Sharon) of Tallahassee; niece, Beth Spratt of Tallahassee; great niece, Kadyn Pool of LaBelle/Clewiston; great twins James and Laura Spratt of Tallahassee; and a host of cousins and friends. Cheryl worked for Hendry County School Board for 18 years. Her most recent position was an Administrative Assistant for the maintenance department. In her younger years she was active in youth softball and holds the honor of being one of the rst female umpires in the State of Florida. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Clewiston. She has served on the nance committee for several years. In lieu of James T. Clark, Jr., 56CLEWISTON — James T. Clark, Jr., age 56, of Clewiston, passed away May 7, 2014 in Miami. He was born Sep. 2, 1957 in Broward County, Florida to James T. and Sarah (Huff) Clark, Sr. He was a self-employed welder for many years. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors include his loving mother; loving wife, Gail; two sons, James Clark, III and David Walker; one daughter, Lori Hadley; stepdaughter, Genean Anderson of Clewiston; and stepson, Kyle Fuehrer. BY DR. DARAYES MOBED General Surgeon at Hendry Regional Medical CenterHave you been trying to ignore the tingling or numbness that you’ve had in your hand and wrist? Are you attributing the sharp, piercing pain that shoots through your wrist and up your arm as passing cramps? More than likely, you have carpal tunnel syndrome, a painful and progressive condition caused by compression of a key nerve in the wrist, the Median nerve. Carpal tunnel is a medical condition in which the Median nerve, running from the forearm into the hand, becomes compressed or squeezed at the wrist. The result may be pain, weakness or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm. Although many associate carpal tunnel syndrome with hours spent working on a computer keyboard, carpal tunnel can actually result from a variety of other job tasks, where the motions of your hands and wrists are stressed. A few examples of these include using power tools, participating in heavy assembly line work, sewing, etc. Carpal tunnel symptoms usually start gradually, with frequent burning, tingling or itching numbness in the palm of the hands and ngers, especially around the thumb and the index nger and middle ngers. The dominant hand is usually affected rst and produces the most severe pain. Women are three times more likely to develop carpal tunnel than men, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Conditions such as thyroid problems, diabetes, obesity and rheumatoid arthritis can increase the risk of this disorder. Numerous drownings in recent weeks underscore importance of following water safety tipsFLORIDA SWIMMING POOL ASSOCIATIONWater safety is an important topic year-round in Florida. Children and adults should be aware of the steps necessary to stay safe. There have been numerous drownings and near drownings in Florida in recent weeks. Below are some important water and swimming pool safety tips. When near the water, watch children with constant, undivided attention. Do not become distracted with things such as text messaging, talking on the phone or yard work. Have a designated pool watcher keep an eye on swimmers at all times. Watching your children is just as important when everyone is indoors. Children are curious, creative and innovative; they can quickly gure out how to get outside and water can pique their interest. For this reason it is important to have several layers of protection between children and the pool. Safety devices that are available include a mesh barrier fence, self-closing and self-latching gate, alarms for doors and windows and for detection in and around the pool, personal immersion alarms, certi ed safety covers, and life rings and shepherd's hooks. Do not leave anything near the fence that a child could use to climb over it and remove steps to above ground pools when not in use. Learn to swim and enroll children in swimming lessons survival classes can start as early as six months old. Learn CPR and keep emergency phone numbers posted in the pool area. While a backyard swimming pool is an obvious place to be practicing water safety, don't forget that bathtubs, lakes or ponds, in atable kiddie pools and the beach are all on the list. Serving the communities south of Lake Okeechobee May 15, 2014 10 The band program crawled along after the 1996 fallout, but was hit hard again in 2009, when a member of the band booster organization was accused, along with her daughter, of stealing thousands of dollars from the booster fund. The ordeal led to the resignation of the band booster administration, who left the fate of the organization in the hands of the sixth grade band parents. Those parents slowly began picking up the pieces of the program. Sean Miller, president of the band boosters, said he kept the boosters alive during what he likes to call “the lost years,” so that he could get restitution from the State Attorney’s Of ce for the money that was taken from the fund. Miller and the other parents’ decision to keep the struggling program going was a decision well-made, as multiple forces came together to reinvigorate the program. The School Board made the decision to split the high school and middle school band programs, after having combined them under one director several years ago, and hired two directors to head each program. “The programs are so different. You can’t build the bottom and not take care of the top,” said high school band director Jessica Dupree. This is Dupree’s rst year as band director in Clewiston. She, like her middle school counterpart, Kelly Harrison, were hired in the 11th hour last summer just a few weeks before school began. The two directors came in without a place to stay and without the knowledge of how desperate the program was. “Some instruments are at the end of their age,” said Dupree, diplomatically. In fact, instruments were being held together with duct tape before the rst donations from U.S. Sugar came. The boosters were able to purchase some new instruments, but the fact is there aren’t enough instruments, let alone instruments in good working order, for the amount of students wanting to participate in band. The program is projected to grow signi cantly next year, putting pressure on the already cash-strapped program. It takes a lot of fundraising to purchase even one instrument: a student-line saxophone suitable for a sixth grader can run upwards of $1,600, according to the directors. “It puts a lot of pressure on the parents to rent instruments,” said Dupree. Then there are the reeds, the band books, the cleaning kits and other additional costs to keeping the instrument in working order that all add up for parents. But it’s not just the parents who will be asked to front some costs. There are big ticket items that need to be bought, including the large instruments that aren’t available for rent, not to mention uniforms for all the students and the transportation needed to get to and from the schools for each of the bands performances, including every away football game. The bene ts of learning an instrument, however, make those costs worthwhile. Discipline, punctuality, learning music, practicing -all of those things translate into education, said Miller. Not to mention myriad studies from universities and research centers alike, which show music education is a superior method to developing the brain and may lead to higher intelligence in children. The students have to concentrate on their breathing, pressing the right note, holding the instrument correctly, reading music -all at the same time, while also marching in front of a large crowd. “These are good translatable skills for the rest of their lives,” said Miller. As the program grows and develops over the next few years, donations like the ones from U.S. Sugar Corporation will be necessary to kick the program back off the ground, while smaller donations from the community will kick it back into high gear. Music education is an integral part of a child’s development both in and out of school. BY MELISSA BELTZ e Clewiston NewsThe Board of County Commissioners met at Clewiston City Hall for their regular meeting on May 13. The highlight of the meeting was the 2014 legislative review given by State Representative Matt Hudson. Hudson informed commissioners that the state passed a balanced budget with $3 billion in reserves, making Florida the state with the strongest credit rating in the entire union. The reserves, Hudson said, are saved in part for natural disasters. Hudson also informed commissioners that virtually all of the small grants Hendry County applied for were approved by the legislature, however, virtually all of the large grants were not approved. The state, according to Hudson, also approved $2 million to fund research for citrus greening and Hudson was a key player in passing laws that bene t individuals suffering from Alzheimer's. Next, commissioners read a proclamation that designates May 11 to May 17 as National Hospital Week. R.D. Williams, CEO of Hendry Regional Medical Center, was present at the meeting and accepted a plaque from Chairman Karson Turner. Commissioners also approved a proclamation naming the week of May 17 National Public Works Week. The county's public works employees will be honored with a barbeque for appreciation week. County Administrator Charles Chapman was next to discuss his agenda items, including an announcement that the Four Corners MSBU would need yet another extension. Public Safety Chief Donna Akin addressed commissioners and said she has been looking into switching from ADPI, which provides medical billing and coding services to emergency medical service agencies, to another company, because ADPI admitted they could have collected more money for the county. The chief is working under a time constraint to nd the new company: in order to terminate the contract with ADPI, the county needs to inform the company they wish to terminate by June 1, and must have a backup rm already lined up in order to do so. The short meeting concluded with Commissioner Janet Taylor informing the board and the audience that GoodWheels, which provides free transportation around the area, will no longer be doing Medicaid transportation as of June 1. Four different scholarships were given out to the 17 seniors in varying amounts. The Campbell and Frances Nall Scholarship was awarded to Sadie Awe and Brock Ramer in the amount of $6,000 each. Sadie will be attending the University of Florida to study biology and Brock will be attending the University of South Florida to pursue a degree in international studies. Melanie DeLaSalas, Jhander Garcia, Jenny Lopez, Mindy Paniagua and Victor Ramos were all awarded a one-time Campbell and Frances Nall Scholarship in the amount of $550 each. Melanie will be attending the University of Florida to study education, Jhander will be attending the University of Central Florida to study law, Jenny will be attending the University of Central Florida to study biology, Mindy will be attending Palm Beach State College to study education and Victor will be attending the University of Central Florida to study biology. The 2014 Larsen Foundation Scholarship awarded both Ariana Rojas and Maria Martinez $750 per semester, totaling $6,000 in four years. Ariana will be attending the University of South Florida to study education and Maria will be attending the University of Florida. Jessica Radcliffe was awarded a $2,500 scholarship on behalf of Weekley Asphalt Paving, which she will use towards her education at the University of Florida to study animal sciences. Weekley Asphalt Paving also awarded seven students with a one-time $250 scholarship to use towards books and other college staples. Rachel Hoover, Maria Leon, Christian Rodriguez, Jalen Rushing, Katira Soto, Ti’Anna Thomas and Elizabeth Velasquez were each presented with the award. Rachel will be attending Southeastern University and plans to study marketing, Maria will be attending Palm Beach State College, Christian is still yet undecided, Jalen will be attending Warner University to study communications, Katira will be attending Keiser University to study medicine, Ti’Anna will be attending the University of South Florida to study education and Elizabeth will be attending Palm Beach State College to study nursing. Working age adults with disabilities who do not get any aerobic physical activity are 50 percent more likely than their active peers to have a chronic disease such as cancer, diabetes, stroke, or heart disease, according to a Vital Signs report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Nearly half (47 percent) of adults with disabilities who are able to do aerobic physical activity do not get any. An additional 22 percent are not active enough. Yet only about 44 percent of adults with disabilities who saw a doctor in the past year got a recommendation for physical activity. “Physical activity is the closest thing we have to a wonder drug,” said CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. “Unfortunately, many adults with disabilities don’t get regular physical activity. That can change if doctors and other health care providers take a more active role helping their patients with disabilities develop a physical tness plan that’s right for them.” Most adults with disabilities are able to participate in some aerobic physical activity which has bene ts for everyone by reducing the risk of serious chronic diseases. Some of the bene ts from regular aerobic physical activity include increased heart and lung function; better performance in daily living activities; greater independence; decreased chances of developing chronic diseases; and improved mental health. For this report, CDC analyzed data from the 2009-2012 National Health Interview Survey and focused on the relation between physical activity levels and chronic diseases among U.S. adults aged 18-64 years with disabilities, by disability status and type. These are adults with serious difculty walking or climbing stairs; hearing; seeing; or concentrating, remembering, or making decisions. Based on the 2010 data, the study also assessed the prevalence of receiving a health professional recommendation for physical activity and the association with the level of aerobic physical activity. Key ndings include:  Working age adults with disabilities are three times more likely to have heart disease, stroke, diabetes or cancer than adults without disabilities.  Nearly half of adults with disabilities get no aerobic physical activity, an important protective health behavior to help avoid these chronic diseases.  Inactive adults with disabilities were 50 percent more likely to report at least one chronic disease than were active adults with disabilities.  Adults with disabilities were 82 percent more likely to be physically active if their doctor recommended it. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that all adults, including those with disabilities, get at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of moderate – intensity aerobic physical activity each week. If meeting these guidelines is not possible, adults with disabilities should start physical activity slowly based on their abilities and tness level. Doctors and other health professionals can recommend physical activity options that match the abilities of adults with disabilities and resources that can help overcome barriers to physical activity. These barriers include limited information about accessible facilities and programs; physical barriers in the built or natural environment; physical or emotional barriers to participating in tness and recreation activities, and lack of training in accessibility and communication among tness and recreation professionals. “It is essential that we bring together adults with disabilities, health professionals and community leaders to address resource needs to increase physical activity for people with disabilities,” said Coleen Boyle, Ph.D., M.S. hyg., director of CDC’s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities. CDC has set up a dedicated resource page for doctors and other health professionals with information to help them recommend physical activity to their adult patients with disabilities, www.cdc.gov/disabilities/PA.
